A short Introduction to Emacs, a free editing software. Using Emacs, we cover file commands, cursor movement commands and cut/copy/paste commands. To all those complaining that he's _"speaking too fast"_ - not so - you're *listening too slowly* Go back and use MS Notepad, it's more your speed.

Hi, great tutorial... I have an enormous question: How can I just select an entire column. Thanks!
Stiofán Davies (2 years ago)
This is more of a keep up with the narrator, rather than any tutorial. This is NOT the way to teach beginners, ridiculous!

Sooo, you need an American Mac keyboard to use this? No, seriously though. How do you use emacs when you don't have the Cmd key? How do you use emacs if <, >, \ etc are accessed via shift or Alt Gr?
fede (2 years ago)
I have a spanish qwerty keyboard, and just trying to learn some emacs. > is Shift+< Doing M+Shift+< does M+> \ is altGr+' Doing M+AltGr+' runs M+\ C is Control, M is either Alt or Esc, sometimes you'll see S which is Super or windows key. So yes, it works that way, but the ergonomics are terrible. There probably are some better bindings for different kind of keyboards. You could also try Vim (Evil) mode (spacemacs has it out of the box), or look into keychords.

@2:00, in my version of EMACs, the command for 'save as' is C-x C-w, not C-s C-w
Ab z (2 years ago)
its tooo fast, I was looking to know M-x but escaped anyway

Is it a tutorial for beginners, or a freakin race?
Peter Steinhardt (2 years ago)
slow it down about 25% and it would be ok, thanks anyway!
Phraggers (2 years ago)
sarcastic reply is sarcastic Though it is true lol I just kept pausing and alt-tab to learn the commands
Ethashamuddin Mohammed (2 years ago)
Hai Yuksel, To save the file with different name, It is 'C-x C-w' but not 'C-s C-w'. I learnt it from http://stackoverflow.com/questions/39821313/c-s-c-w-does-not-work-emacs
BringerOfTheTruth (2 years ago)
Bro good tut but sometimes your going way to fast !. The "M-x" is not explained at all ! What is it ? Is it ctrl m+x or what ? I googled it and found out that M stands for meta key, eg escle. SO Escape x it is.
numia (2 years ago)
BringerOfTheTruth 'Alt' works too...

Do you also use the webbrowser "conkeror" which has emacs keybindings?  Just asking because there is only one video on how to use it on  youtube and it wasn't very good.

Its C-x C-w not C-s C-w to save the buffer into a new file no ?
[sic] (2 years ago)
Yes, that is correct C-x C-w. He puts the correct version in his annotation, must have been a typo.
Alvin Lee (5 years ago)
It's very well done. But the commands are so different from regular cut and paste commands. I think I'll stay away from emacs for this reason.
Jie Tian (5 years ago)
very good job

Great video. Could you make a video explaining how to use rebox2? And about some tutorial about automatic header files (that could be configured)? See you
