Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat (The Lumière Brothers, 1895)

3982 ratings | 1399301 views
Original Title: L'Arrivée d'un Train à la Ciotat Directors: Auguste and Louis Lumière Year: 1895 The first public exhibition of motion pictures occurred on 28th December 1895 when August Lumière and Louis Lumière (the Lumière Brothers) exhibited a selection of ten of their single-reel films to a paying audience at a Parisian cafe. 'Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat' is considered to be the first motion picture in modern history (altough more an experiment from the Lumière-brothers to use their 'invention' of film, it shows a train arriving at a passenger station). Popular legend has it that, when this film was shown, the first-night audience fled the cafe in terror, fearing being run over by the "approaching" train. Most of the cast were members of the Lumière family and employees from the Lumière factory.

What I wouldn’t give to time travel back or something be at that first screening, watching everyone else collectively lose their shit.

i just read about this movie having an urban legend that the first time it was shown people freaked the hell out and ran because of a life size train coming at them (the film) well consider right now people are still freaking the hell out at heights in vr games myself included plus shooters people are instinctively dodging bullets my mother included that was surprising as hell. i for one believe the legend.

Apparently, when people watched this for the first time they used to duck because they thought that the train would hit them.

I can see that people would really believe that a train had somehow decided to get on a track that wasn't there moments beforehand ---- along with the station and the people.....
Kc Doyle (6 months ago)
Was the music originally in it if so how was it put in?
Nikola95inYT (4 months ago)
Cinema had no sound until 1930s, this era was called as 'silent films'. They just had a pianist behind the screen which played the music :)

Nikola95inYT (4 months ago)
Because of low resolution and frame rate. If they were filmed by modern cameras, you won't see a difference.

"The Lumière Brother’s Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat’s effect on viewers in 1895 was historical. People panicked and thronged together in the aisles to run away from the colossal vehicle that was hurtling towards them. Our ability to differentiate moving images from reality had not yet been forged. The same thing happened during the premiere of Edwin S. Porter’s The Great Train Robbery (1903). The legendary final plane, in which the cowboy shoots his gun directly at the camera, had a similar effect to the Lumière Brother’s film. While watching the first Western of all time, the members of the audience naïvely feared for their lives." http://www.faena.com/aleph/articles/the-first-western-in-film-history/

Not frightening. A definitive example of audio proving to be more effective than visuals and this just does not cut the mustard.

Back then, people were not used to seeing a motion picture. When people saw this in a movie theater, they actually ran away and screamed thinking the locomotive was actually coming towards them on the screen. That's how exciting movies were in the late 1800's. They didn't know it was just a bunch of pictures.

That someone saw one of the earliest films ever made and then felt motivated enough to give it a downvote is somehow really funny.

I love how some of the passengers that ride off the train stares at the camera, wondering what the fuck is a guy doing winding up a box with a circular glass at the front.
