Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat (The Lumière Brothers, 1895)

3507 ratings | 1324388 views
Original Title: L'Arrivée d'un Train à la Ciotat Directors: Auguste and Louis Lumière Year: 1895 The first public exhibition of motion pictures occurred on 28th December 1895 when August Lumière and Louis Lumière (the Lumière Brothers) exhibited a selection of ten of their single-reel films to a paying audience at a Parisian cafe. 'Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat' is considered to be the first motion picture in modern history (altough more an experiment from the Lumière-brothers to use their 'invention' of film, it shows a train arriving at a passenger station). Popular legend has it that, when this film was shown, the first-night audience fled the cafe in terror, fearing being run over by the "approaching" train. Most of the cast were members of the Lumière family and employees from the Lumière factory.

I don't know what's worse, the original film's quality or Youtube's compression because of it.

"The Lumière Brother’s Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat’s effect on viewers in 1895 was historical. People panicked and thronged together in the aisles to run away from the colossal vehicle that was hurtling towards them. Our ability to differentiate moving images from reality had not yet been forged. The same thing happened during the premiere of Edwin S. Porter’s The Great Train Robbery (1903). The legendary final plane, in which the cowboy shoots his gun directly at the camera, had a similar effect to the Lumière Brother’s film. While watching the first Western of all time, the members of the audience naïvely feared for their lives." http://www.faena.com/aleph/articles/the-first-western-in-film-history/

They all act natural despite there being a camera. Because nobody at that point knew what a camera was.

Not frightening. A definitive example of audio proving to be more effective than visuals and this just does not cut the mustard.

That was so thrilling. For a moment it looked like it was coming right at us. Then we realize it's going to miss. What a relief.

Back then, people were not used to seeing a motion picture. When people saw this in a movie theater, they actually ran away and screamed thinking the locomotive was actually coming towards them on the screen. That's how exciting movies were in the late 1800's. They didn't know it was just a bunch of pictures.

I love how some of the passengers that ride off the train stares at the camera, wondering what the fuck is a guy doing winding up a box with a circular glass at the front.

Those are actual real life people who have families, friends, jobs, homes, destinations and dreams. Actual real life people who had no idea that a few dozen seconds of their lives were just saved for all eternity by two brothers. Actual real life people who all died last century, or before. Makes you think.
