Minera: The Women Miners of Benguet
In the province of Benguet in northern Philippines, small-scale gold mining has been an important source of livelihood for centuries for indigenous communities. Artisanal and labor intensive, most of Philippine gold is still extracted with the simplicity of picks, shovels, human hands, and water; sometimes just besides large mining corporations. Men are thought of as the usual prominent actors in these communities. This documentary corrects this misimpression. Women miners are as essential to small-scale mining as the male workers. And unlike men, they must combine numerous daily responsibilities, in the household, the field, and the mine. However, these duties are balanced neither with compensation nor representation, in the family as well as in the community. This documentary is a story of the women miners of Itogon, Benguet who have moved mountains and have kept pushing on, how they have transcended the weariness of the body and the strictures of gender to live a life in their own terms and to unselfishly care for others.

The price of gold: Chinese mining in Ghana documentary | Guardian Investigations
Ghana has had a gold rush but here, Afua Hirsch discovers how Chinese immigrants are profiting from industrialising the country's small-scale mining industry. She sees for herself that, for the many locals who chance losing life and limb for a piece of the same pie, the risks are rarely worth it, and explores where the responsibility for regulating this industry lies. The battle over mining for gold in Marmato
The town of Marmato, in Central Colombia, sits on top a mountain of gold. Its people have been living off of it for centuries, mining the precious metal through mostly small scale, artisanal operations. But as the country is increasingly relying on its mineral resources to fuel the economy, multinational mining companies have set their sights on places like Marmato to install open air mines that would literally swallow the landscape. According to some estimates, it would take about 20 years to extract all the gold from the mountain, wiping out the town and its 10,000 inhabitants in the process. The imminence of this news weighs heavily on the people of Marmato, who are organizing to fight back and prevent this from happening. Correspondent Toby Muse traveled to the Colombian Andes Mountains to report on this story for Americas Now. what lies beneath-smalle scale mining story
The Philippine deposits of gold, copper, chromium and nickel are considered as the 5th largest in the world. In 2009, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) estimated the country's gold reserves at 5,080,785,289 tons, based accordingly on the bureau's consolidation of resource inventory data supplied by mining companies. Forty provinces that have gold deposits practice different ways of mining gold that has been hand down from their ancestors since 3rd century. The Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining (ASGM) is very common to the rural areas of the Philippines because of the constant surge in the price of gold and easy way out of poverty. ASGM, which occurs in more than 70 countries, provides income to an estimated 10 - 15 million miners including 4.5 million women and 1 million children. The sector produces about 500 to 800 tonnes of gold per annum, which accounts for about 20 to 30 percent of the world's gold supply. Despite of this, destruction of environment and human health is at stake. The use of mercury (Hg) in ASGM posed a very dangerous threat to the health of the miners. It contains potent neurotoxin that impairs brain function, lowers intelligence and causes hearing loss. It also affects women in terms of miscarriages and birth defects. This element also destroys the environment by polluting freshwater bodies. Moreover, small scale mining practices such as the use of dynamite in making tunnels is one of the cause of landslides and degradation of the mountain. This photo story will focus on the environment and health issues pose by the artisanal and small-scale gold mining practices in the Philippines and it will also showcase how the players such as the miners, townspeople and the government are dealing with it. My objective in making this story is to educate the people about the reality that small scale mining is dangerous but a kind of livelihood that is essential in the national development of the country. It aims to call on the attention of the government to regulate and supervise this kind of livelihood for the benefit of the miners and the companies.

Women in mining: Making it in a male-dominated industry
In Uganda, millions of women work in small-scale mining. But women’s roles are often ignored in this male-dominated industry. Mining is an important source of income for women and their families, yet they are usually limited to activities where they earn less than men. Despite the odds, women like Mariam Nakacho have managed to break away from these roles. Her work at an artisanal gold mine in central Uganda has enabled her to earn a decent living. “Now I have a furnished home and I can pay for my children’s school fees.” But women in artisanal mining face many challenges because of their gender. Women typically work in isolation, making them vulnerable to attacks.“There are no toilets, no healthcare, and no services. Sanitation is a big problem. And we’re always scared of being raped or robbed,” Mariam says. Researchers believe that understanding women’s roles in artisanal and small-scale mining and drawing attention to the many barriers they face, will provide policymakers with evidence to help women like Mariam live and work safely while earning a fair living. Understanding women's experiences in artisinal and small scale mining in Central and East Africa
Women participate in high-numbers in artisanal and small-scale mining in Africa, yet little is known about their role in increased mining activity and the impact of heightened regulation in their lives. This project aims to fill these knowledge gaps, by studying women’s activities in mining gold, tin, tantalum and tungsten in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, and Uganda. Research will inform policies on the barriers to women miners’ economic empowerment, ways to overcome these, and the role mining reforms play on gender equality. Small-scale miners use mercury to get gold in 'Lason sa Ginto'
In Kalinga, small-scale miners use mercury to extract gold from soil and rocks. They are unaware of the harmful effects mercury can cause on the human body. Though the local government has banned the sale and use of mercury for mining in the area, these are still being sold rampantly, even in sari-sari stores.

Golden Gamble. Gold mining in the Philippines, a dirty business
More films about the Philippines: https://rtd.rt.com/tags/philippines/ - The use of child labour in the Philippine’s Paracale, or ‘Goldtown’, is widespread - Extracting gold involves diving into mud-filled shafts and using toxic mercury - Poverty and lack of alternative jobs force people into this highly dangerous work - Many die young due to work accidents or breathing problems, others develop chronic illness The Philippines’ town of Paracale was dubbed “Goldtown” for its rich deposits of the precious metal. Despite government attempts to regulate mining, illegal pits are still commonplace. They lack even the most basic health and safety and workers are exposed to toxic mercury fumes. Dirty water causes skin diseases and they live with the constant threat of being buried alive. Workers continue to take these risks day after day, because there is no other source of income. Many of the gold miners are children whose families can’t afford to send them to school. Some gold is panned on the surface, but a lot has to be extracted from underground. To do that, prospectors dive into narrow, mud-filled shafts, uses snorkelling masks and long tubes too breathe. If the mine collapses, they have no chance of escape. They have a saying here, ‘while you’re down the mine, you have one foot in the grave’. Several miners have already died that way, others from respiratory diseases caused by inhaling mercury fumes. The toxic metal is used in gold extraction with no safety precautions, so it poisons the air, the ground and the water, causing long-term harm to the whole community. Another danger to the inhabitants of Paracale comes from disused mines, abandoned and left open, waiting for unsuspecting victims to fall in. The business takes its toll on workers, their families and the community. They have been known to demonstrate, demanding safer working conditions, better pay and other job opportunities, but change is slow. Meanwhile, extreme poverty among people who produce one of the world’s most precious metals leaves them no option but to continue with this pitiless occupation. This unsafe method of amalgamation of gold with mercury was filmed by me in the gold-rich Ashanti region of Ghana, where poor young men and women perform small-scale, surface alluvial mining. Although panning for gold has been going on for centuries in Ghana, an intense period of this alluvial mining took place between about 2005 and 2012, when illegal Chinese miners flocked to Ghana in the thousands and employed young Ghanaian men and women to do the brunt of the physical work. The richer Chinese used huge excavators to dig deep into the earth, forming pits that scarred the landscape and unearthed heavy metals. Small-scale gold mining in Ghana has reportedly declined recently, but the mercury-gold amalgamation and extraction shown is still common. Many young Ghanaian miners are unaware or dismissive of the dangers of inhaling mercury fumes. Obviously, the method shown is NOT recommended, but I captured it as part of the research for my novel GOLD OF THE FATHERS, to be released in April 2016, a murder mystery set in Ghana with illegal gold mining as its background.

What do small businesses need to achieve the SDGs?
Small-scale domestic enterprises in once neglected economic sectors can play a giant role in achieving the sustainable development goals. At a time when countries and development agencies are finding it difficult to secure finance for development, the micro- and small-scale private sector are already providing tens of millions of jobs in the world’s poorest countries, employing large numbers of women and young people and sustaining a steady demand for local suppliers and service providers. But their full potential to spur growth and prosperity is seldom realized. Domestic micro and small enterprises of the global south are demanding better access to finance and know-how in areas like marketing and technology, and in turn are benefiting from support to improve environmental, health & safety, and labour practices. Join the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States, European Commission and United Nations Development Programme to discuss how to mobilise the small-scale private sector, particularly in neglected economic sectors such as the mining of Development Minerals. Development Minerals. Matter for the SDGs. The stories we tell about mining are tales about the panning of gold, the smuggling of diamonds or about extraction by large-scale multinational mining companies, but there is another, more humble side to the sector. From toothpaste, to paints and buildings to plates, local materials like sand, gravel, limestone and clay are crucial for local development. Women and youth dominate the small-scale mining of Development Minerals. Watch the video above as four women in the Development Minerals sector share their vision for their small business and what they need to get there.
