The Mining and Smelting of Canadian Nickel / Coniston ,Ontario
This historical silent film documents the entire mining process as it was done in the 1930s. The Village of Coniston experienced a rapid and large growth spurt when in 1913, the Mond Nickel Company moved its smelting operations from Victoria Mine (a small mining community located west of Sudbury) to Coniston. Prior to 1913, the Mond Nickel Company had been operating in Victoria Mine for thirteen years. When the company could no longer expand its mining operations in the area, it chose to relocate to Coniston for two important reasons: firstly, because the land in Coniston was adequate for the company's purposes, and most importantly, because the community had railway junctions for two different railway companies within its townsite. This factor would enable the Mond Nickel Company to ship its mined ore from the Sudbury Basin to Coniston for smelting and from there, send the processed minerals to Clydach, Wales for refining, all with little fuss.

(Not) Canada's Way
Are you ready to stand up for justice for mining-affected communities in the Global South? If the approval of a mine meant you would be kicked off your land, would you expect a chance to say no this project? And if it went ahead, would you expect to be compensated? If your drinking water were poisoned or water sources dried up -- would you expect someone to fix the problem? Canada's companies are the biggest players in the mining sector in developing countries. Their wealth and backing by the Canadian government mean they often have privileged treatment by host governments. Are Canadian mining companies too big to be held accountable for -- - Environmental crimes? - Violence committed by their local personnel? - Influence peddling with host governments? - Tax avoidance? Join us to call for: - Legislated access to Canadian courts for people who have been harmed by the international operations of Canadian companies - Creation of an extractive-sector Ombuds office in Canada mandated to investigate accusations of abuses and make recommendations to the government and the companies involved.

Westray Mine disaster - The Last Shift - the fifth estate
On May 9th 1992 an explosion ripped apart the Westray Coal Mine in Pictou County, Nova Scotia killing 26 miners. The Fifth Estate and the Journal co-produced this story about the tragedy. The mine was opened the year before despite misgivings that the geology of the area was unstable and prone to large volumes of methane gas. The Federal Government was reluctant help the private company starting the mine after numerous reports cited geological concerns. But after heavy lobbying the mine opened. From the beginning miners complained of safety issues, rock falls, high methane gas levels and large amounts of coal dust. The company's output and quality of coal were disappointing. Inspectors visited the mine 49 times. Critics claim inspectors didn't take the conditions seriously enough and that the company was negligent. Government officials say it's not at fault. But the miners say even if the mine were to reopen they would never go back.Linden MacIntyre hosts.
