Find more effects of mining right here: http://www.buzzle.com/articles/how-does-mining-affect-the-environment.html Mining is the source of all the substances that cannot be obtained by industrial processes or through agriculture. Mining reaps huge profits for the companies that own them and provides employment to a large number of people. It is also a huge source of revenue for the government. Despite its economic importance, the effects of mining on the environment is a pressing issue. Mining activities require the clearing of large areas of land. The chemicals used in the mining process often escape into the environment causing pollution. Watch this video to know how mining affects the environment.

International Research Impact: http://bit.ly/impact-yt A team of civil engineering experts at Newcastle University is helping to tackle the global problem of water pollution caused by mining. Dr Adam Jarvis, Reader in Environmental Engineering, explains the impact of the work and describes a system that is being trialled to remove metal from water without the need for energy or chemicals. The 'vertical flow pond' in the Lake District National Park has been designed in collaboration with the Coal Authority, National Trust and Environment Agency, and funded by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. The method could pave the way for cleaning up hundreds of abandoned metal mines across England and potentially the world. Integrated Mining and processing systems design for eco efficiency

45:00
Speaker: Laurie Reemeyer, Principal Consultant, Resourceful Paths Talk: Integrated mining and processing systems design for eco-efficiency Abstract: The mining industry faces increasing economic, environmental, and social challenges as easier deposits deplete and ores become more difficult to mine and process, and more stringent environmental and social standards must be met. While these factors increase costs and risks, they also present opportunities for a more integrated approach to mining, processing, materials handling, and waste management. Two areas of particular risk are in tailings and water management. As mining and processing tonnage rates continue to increase, the disturbance footprints, water and energy consumption, and scale of tailings storage facilities also rise. These factors can be mitigated by more selective mining, ore sorting, and pre-concentration, and more intensive tailings dewatering. Such alternatives must be considered in conjunction with the selection of mining method, metallurgical flowsheets, major equipment selection, and key process design criteria. Models for integrated design and possibilities for reducing environmental impact are reviewed.

Digging in to Save the Earth – Mine Reclamation

04:29
By Andrea Hanson Winner, Best Picture, Best Actress, 2016 Laurentian University Eagle Awards (VLWL) Subarctic regions are recognized as one of the largest remaining pristine ecosystems in the world. They have been subject to increasing pressure from mining activities as demands for resources grow. The remote location of these new mining developments pose a challenge for both development and reclamation efforts. In regards to mine reclamation, there is often a shortage of material available to be re-used to create cover soils post closure. Also, it is not ideal to transport external materials to create these cover soils. Therefore, it is important for these developments to explore how they can efficiently use material readily available to them create effective cover soils during the mine reclamation process. Andrea Hanson, a graduate student at Laurentian University, is examining how mines in northern regions can use mineral and organic substrates readily available - including their mining by-products - to create a cover soil with suitable conditions for vegetation establishment during mine reclamation. Her team's research is specifically focused on the reclamation of diamond mine waste at the De Beers Victor Diamond Mine in the Hudson Bay Lowlands of Ontario’s Far North. By determining the most suitable conditions for vegetation establishment, they will provide insight into the challenges associated with re-vegetation of subarctic environments, and provide the Victor Mine with suggestions for a reclamation protocol upon closure. Achieving sustainability for resource exploitation in the subarctic requires a greater understanding of ecosystem processes and rehabilitation potential of these regions.

Olympic Dam mine expansion- Environmental impacts of tailings & water by Dr Gavin Mudd - Pt 3

08:34
http://cuttlefishcountry.com BHP Billiton's Olympic Dam mine is massive and destined to become the biggest open cut mine in the world. Naturally, with massive mines come massive impacts... environmentally, socially and economically. Widely published environmental engineer Dr Gavin Mudd (Monash University) gives this presentation on the impact the mining operation will have from the desert to the sea, and beyond through the export of dangerous radioactive materials. Tailings dams will leak radioactive waste into the earth in the South Australian desert, the water drawn from the Great Artesian Basin will continue to dry natural mound springs, threaten pastoral and agricultural bores and endanger arid zone ecology and indigenous sacred sites. Dr Gavin Mudd delivered this presentation in Adelaide, South Australia on October 9th, 2011... the day before the mega-mine project received environmental approval from both State and Federal Governments. OSM expects its rulemaking to trim 7,000 coal mining jobs in 22 states

00:29
1/27/2011 - Peter Mail, a spokesman for the surface mining reclamation office, said the proposal's aim is "to better strike the balance between protecting the public and the environment while providing for viable coal mining." Mali said the document is the first working draft that was shared with state agencies, which are giving their comments on it. (More) http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=133248892 1/26/2011 - The Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement document says the agency's preferred rules would impose standards for water quality and restrictions on mining methods that would affect the quality or quantity of streams near coal mines. The office, a branch of the Interior Department, estimated that the protections would trim coal production to the point that an estimated 7,000 of the nation's 80,600 coal mining jobs would be lost. Production would decrease or stay flat in 22 states, but climb 15 percent in North Dakota, Wyoming and Montana. . . . West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection official Thomas Clarke told the Associated Press on Wednesday. "I've had OSM technical people who are concerned with stream impacts and outside contractors for OSM who are subcontractors on the EIS give me their opinion that the whole thing's a bunch of junk." In the past 12 months the Office of Surface Mining has increased the number of oversight inspections to evaluate how each state is administering its regulatory program. This a clip from: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6WSvVpdm-w ---- 12/27/2010 - http://www.register-herald.com/todaysfrontpage/x258589936/What-s-in-a-name-Mountaintop-removal-vs-mountaintop-development (Excerpt) "In my mind, mountaintop 'removal' implies the site is mined and then left barren, lifeless and flattened. This couldn't be further from the truth," said Chris Hamilton of the West Virginia Coal Association. He points to the mining permit requirement that forces miners to restore the mines to their approximate original contour or to configure the land for an "alternate use." Restoring the land occurs in about 90 percent to 95 percent of former surface mines, Hamilton said. "We rebuild the mountain peak, resculpting it to approximately as close as possible to the original premining topography of the land, then we reseed it with grasses and trees," Hamilton said. However, Vivian Stockman, an organizer for the Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition, told West Virginia Public Broadcasting that a flyover of the southern West Virginia coalfields suggests little development on former surface mine sites. "If they're hoping to, you know, create shopping malls on some of these, I don't know where they're going to get all the shoppers," she said. "All the communities around these areas have been driven away." She added that the notion that West Virginia needs more flat land is a myth. "Back in 2002 we had some volunteers create some maps for us," she said. "There were just massive amounts of land that are not, in any way, shape or form, developed." Researchers from the Natural Resources Defense Council found that about 1.2 million acres and about 500 mountains were flattened by surface mining in central Appalachia. An aerial imagery analysis by NRDC found that about 90 percent of mountaintop removal sites were not converted to economic uses. Only about 4 percent of West Virginia and Kentucky mountaintops had been redeveloped, NRDC found. --- 11/18/2010 - Salazar Commends OSM Initiatives to Improve Oversight of State Surface Coal Mining Programs - http://www.doi.gov/news/pressreleases/Salazar-Commends-OSM-Initiatives-to-Improve-Oversight-of-State-Surface-Coal-Mining-Programs.cfm --- In June 2009, the U.S. Department of the Interior (Interior Department) entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to reduce the harmful environmental impacts of coal mining in six states in central Appalachia. Through the MOU, the three agencies intend to strengthen oversight and regulation and minimize the adverse environmental consequences of mountaintop removal mining. But geologists say many fires go unreported, driving the actual number of them closer to 200 across 21 states. USGS (2009): Emissions from Coal Fires and Their Impact on the Environment http://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/2009/3084/ (Excerpt) In the United States, the combined cost of coal-fire remediation projects, completed, budgeted, or projected by the U.S. Department of the Interior's Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSM), exceeds $1 billion, with about 90% of that in two States—Pennsylvania and West Virginia (Office of Surface Mining Enforcement and Reclamation, 2008; fig. 2). Altogether, 15 States have combined cumulative OSM coal-fire project costs exceeding $1 million, with the greatest overall expense occurring in States where underground coal fires are predominant over surface fires, reflecting the greater cost of extinguishing underground fires. This table by the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSM) of the Abandoned Mine Lands (AML) reclamation accomplishments (1978-1996) states that 1,245 burning underground fires (in 10 states) and 1,314 burning surface firs (in 21 states had been eliminated. http://www.osmre.gov/Reports/AnnualReport/1996/1996_stat_table13_AMLCoalRecAccomplishments.pdf Distribution and Characteristics of Outcrop Fires in Horizontal Strata in Eastern and Western Coal Providences Bernard R. These deposits form a mineralized package that is of economic interest to the miner. Ores recovered by mining include metals, coal, oil shale, gemstones, limestone, chalk, dimension stone, rock salt, potash, gravel, and clay. Mining is required to obtain any material that cannot be grown through agricultural processes, or created artificially in a laboratory or factory. Mining in a wider sense includes extraction of any non-renewable resource such as petroleum, natural gas, or even water. Mining of stones and metal has been a human activity since pre-historic times. Modern mining processes involve prospecting for ore bodies, analysis of the profit potential of a proposed mine, extraction of the desired materials, and final reclamation of the land after the mine is closed. De Re Metallica, Georgius Agricola, 1550, Book I, Para. 1Mining operations usually create a negative environmental impact, both during the mining activity and after the mine has closed. Hence, most of the world's nations have passed regulations to decrease the impact. Work safety has long been a concern as well, and modern practices have significantly improved safety in mines. Levels of metals recycling are generally low. Unless future end-of-life recycling rates are stepped up, some rare metals may become unavailable for use in a variety of consumer products. Due to the low recycling rates, some landfills now contain higher concentrations of metal than mines themselves.

Public Lecture_Geological disposal of radioactive waste in the UK_Feb 2019

01:05:24
Preparations for undertaking one of Britain’s largest ever environmental projects are advancing rapidly. Radioactive Waste Management is a public sector delivery body tasked with disposing of Britain’s higher activity radioactive waste. A complex 60-year legacy of waste needs to be managed to protect people and the environment from its harmful properties. The safest and most sustainable way to deal with higher activity waste is to emplace it in a geological disposal facility (GDF). Geological disposal combines engineered and natural barriers working together to isolate a GDF from humans and surface processes, and to prevent migration of radionuclides to the surface environment. Natural barriers are provided by the geology in which the GDF will be hosted, plus any overlying low-permeability sedimentary layers. GDF delivery requires a suitable site – not the perfect geology – and a willing community (the ‘social licence to operate’). Among major infrastructure programmes, it is possibly uniquely challenged by the need for public consent and the very long timescales, of both GDF programme duration and the geological length of the post-closure safety period 100,000 years. Conceptual designs have been developed for geological disposal in three broad categories of host rock type: Higher-Strength Rock (HSR) such as hard, fractured crystalline rocks, very low-permeability Lower-Strength Sedimentary Rock (LSSR), and rock salt. Examples from overseas include Finland and Sweden where granitic HSR is the host rock for GDFs they are developing, Jurassic clay-rich LSSRs are the host in France and Switzerland, and the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in New Mexico is constructed in Permian rock salt. Site selection is consent-based and RWM will work in partnership with local communities over a period of many decades through the site selection, site investigation and operational stages of this 100+ year programme.

How does a Double Roll Crusher works - Mineral Processing

00:45
For more mineral processing videos visit my YouTube Channel: http://www.youtube.com/hsrivastav2011/videos Description: Roll crushers, or crushing rolls, are still used in some mills, although they have been replaced in most installations by cone crushers. They still have a useful application in handling friable, sticky, frozen, and less abrasive feeds, such as limestone, coal, chalk, gypsum, phosphate, and soft iron ores. Jaw and gyratory crushers have a tendency to choke near the discharge when crushing friable rock with a large proportion of maximum size pieces in the feed. The mode of operation of roll crushers is extremely simple, the standard spring rolls consisting of two horizontal cylinders which revolve towards each other. The set is determined by shims which cause the spring-loaded roll to be held back from the solidly mounted roll. Crushing rolls Unlike jaw and gyratory crushers, where reduction is progressive by repeated pressure as the material passes down to the discharge point, the crushing process in rolls is one of single pressure. Roll crushers are also manufactured with only one rotating cylinder, which revolves towards a fixed plate. Other roll crushers use three, four, or six cylinders. In some crushers the diameters and speeds of the rolls may differ. The rolls may be gear driven, but this limits the distance adjustment between the rolls; and modern rolls are driven by V-belts from separate motors. Multi-roll machines may use rolls in pairs or in sets of three. Machines with more than two rolls are, however, rare in modern mills. The great disadvantage of roll crushers is that, in order for reasonable reduction ratios to be achieved, very large rolls are required in relation to the size of the feed particles. They therefore have the highest capital cost of all crushers. Peripheral speeds vary between about 1 ms -1 for small rolls, up to about 15 ms -1 for the largest sizes of 1800 mm diameter upwards. Smooth-surfaced rolls are usually used for fine crushing, whereas coarse crushing is often performed in rolls having corrugated surfaces, or with stub teeth arranged to present a chequered surface pattern. "Sledging" or "slugger" rolls have a series of intermeshing teeth, or slugs, protruding from the roll surfaces. These dig into the rock so that the action is a combination of compression and ripping, and large pieces in relation to the roll diameter can be handled. Their main application is in the coarse crushing of soft or sticky iron ores, friable limestone, coal, etc., rolls of 1 rn diameter being used to crush material of top size 400 mm. Wear on the roll surfaces is very high and they often have a manganese steel tyre, which can be replaced when wom. The feed must be spread uniformly over the whole width of the rolls in order to give even wear. One simple method is to use a flat feed belt of the same width as the rolls. Since there is no provision for the swelling of broken ore in the crushing chamber, roll crushers must be "starvation fed" if they are to be prevented from choking. Although the floating roll should only yield to an uncrushable body, choked crushing causes so much pressure that the springs are continually "on the work" during crushing, and some oversize escapes. Rolls should therefore be used in closed circuit with screens. Choked crushing also causes interparticle comminution, which leads to the production of material finer than the set of the crusher. History of Cornish Mining - Cligga Mine Revisited - Poldark Times

29:55
Cornish Tin Mine and Mining History - Cligga Mine Revisited - Cligga Head, Perranporth Cornwall. 3 ghostly images are in the footage from Nosferatu (copyright expired). Revisit of Cligga Tin Mine with much improved lighting, filmed on my GoPro3, 3 hour trip condensed into 30 minutes no software enhancement required. Cree t6 and XML-U2 lamps provide incredible lighting. Bob and myself both have extensive knowledge of mines and mining techniques through working in the industry, old workings are extremely dangerous and must only be entered with a full understanding of how they work, many transfer chutes, winzes, shafts and open stopes make it a hazardous environment. History of Cligga Mine. Cligga Wolfram & Tin Mine lies on the cliff tops about one and a quarter miles southwest of Perranporth on the North Cornish coast. The granite pegmatite cliffs have been altered to greisen and exhibit jointing and veining. The veins often filled with cassiterite (tin oxide), wolframite, mispickel (arsenical pyrite) and the copper/iron suphides, chalcopyrite and bornite. Silver ore has also been reported here. There is one shaft on the sett called Contact Shaft and two adits, one at beach level called Beach Adit, the other atop the cliffs and unsurprisingly called Cliff Adit. The mine worked in the early part of the twentieth century although 'Old Men's Workings' from the past are quite visible as you approach the area. Mining restarted in 1938 after a period of closure prior to the mine being taken over by the 'Rhodesian Mines Trust Limited in 1939'. Trials were carried out around this time to see if it was more feasible to work the stockwork as an open cast pit rather than an underground mine, but this came to nothing. There is surprisingly little information on Cligga although there are production records showing that between 1940 and 1944, 300 tons of wolfram and 200 tons of black tin were raised and sold. 1945 Cligga Mine closed. The War was nearly over and shipments of American tungsten were now arriving regularly in England. The high cost of producing a small quantity of tungsten from Cligga could no longer by justified and therefore, production at Cligga was halted. In 1962 the 'Geevor Mining Company took out a lease on the mine and in collaboration with the Sungesi Besi, Tronoh and Panang Companies started a programme of shaft rehabilitation and deepening with a view to re-opening the mine. Contact shaft was deepened to 550 feet from surface, drives 'on lode' were started both seawards and inland. However water was hit at about 250 feet from the shaft and work there abandoned. The seaward drive continued for some 800 feet before further exploration by diamond drilling commenced. The results were inconclusive, and by early 1964 Geevor had decided to unwater 'Levant' mine instead of re-opening Cligga. 1976 there was renewed interest in mining for tin on a small scale at Cligga, and Wheal Concord undertook a limited programme of evaluation. Wheal Concord Ltd planned to re-open contact shaft in 1984-1985, but the collapse of the tin-market in October 1985 put a stop to this. Cornish tin mines are dangerous only people with knowledge of working mines should enter but then only with extreme caution. History of Cornish Tin Mines collection All music composed with vst plugins and keyboard with mixer, even then had to re up due to a copyright issue and it was my very own work - crazy. 39 views until then. Cligga Mine modern history. 1938 September 21st the "Cligga Wolfram and Tin Mines Ltd" was founded and soon after completion of the installation the rich ore veins were exploited. 1939 The Rhodesian Mines Trust Ltd. took over the company Contact shaft was extended until it reached close to sea level and new stopes were drilled to fully exploit the ore body. 1940, vibration from blasting caused the first of several collapses of the area of cliffs housing the process water pumps (at the northern end of the beach). Eventually, a tunnel was driven to the northwest and a new pump chamber established just above sea level, well away from the effects of blasting. 1941 with the new pump system functional, it was possible to increase production. However, although production had increased, the cost of production had also increased. 1945 Cligga Mine closed. The War was nearly over and shipments of American tungsten were now arriving regularly in England. The high cost of producing a small quantity of tungsten from Cligga could no longer by justified and therefore, production at Cligga was halted. Early 1962 the ‘Geevor Mining Company took out a lease on the mine and in collaboration with the Sungesi Besi, Tronoh and Panang Companies started a programme of shaft rehabilitation and deepening with a view to re-opening the mine. Contact shaft was deepened to 550 feet from surface, drives ‘on lode’ were started both seawards and inland.

MINE SUBSIDENCE - Speech Jeremy Buckingham 20 August 2013

MINE SUBSIDENCE - Speech Jeremy Buckingham 20 August 2013 The Hon. JEREMY BUCKINGHAM [7.13 p.m.]: Tonight I speak about mine subsidence, which is an issue that has been raised in this Parliament on several occasions by me and my former colleagues Cate Faehrmann and Lee Rhiannon. I spoke about this issue in May 2012 after attending a meeting at Camden in south-western Sydney organised by Rivers SOS, a group opposed to the continued expansion of longwall mining in Sydney's water catchment. I spoke about the debacle of Peabody Energy longwall mining under the Waratah Rivulet on the Illawarra plateau causing cracks, which made the water disappear or flow back polluted with iron oxide. This situation is well documented. I am happy to provide video footage and photos to any member who is concerned about the impact of longwall coalmining on our environment. Peabody Energy failed to "repair" the river by filling the cracks with epoxy resin. It was an expensive exercise destined for failure. How do you repair a river, the geology of which has taken millions of years to form? Mining, Ecological Engineering and Metals Extraction for the 21st Century

56:03
Speaker: Margarete Kalin, Research Director and President of Boojum Research Ltd. This webinar is an introduction to a recent contribution on sustainable mining, remediation and metal extraction to the Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Environmental Science, Problems and Solutions. Co- authors are M. Kalin, Michael P. Sudbury and Dr. Bryn Harris. The mining industry developed in an age when resources, space and water appeared limitless. A paradigm shift is needed in mining, remediation and extractive metal processes. Human’s insatiable appetite for metals is estimated to produce annually 20 billion tons of waste rock and tailings, covering about 1000 km2 of land. The annual consumption of fresh water is estimated to be about 80 10-9 tons, most of it will be contaminated. A collision course is on the horizon, given shortages of water and arable land and the ever-increasing global population. The key to a solution to the present un-sustainable environmental management practices lays in ecologist’s view of mining wastes as extreme primordial environments. Natural recovery processes can be supported through ecological engineering measures. This starts with exploration and through to operations, ending with decommissioning. By providing physical and chemical support to promote existing ecological processes within the wastes, we can alter the surface of minerals, thereby decreasing contaminant generation and reducing the volume of drainage by promoting run-off. Supporting the growth of indigenous biota leading to increased agglomeration of contaminant on the cell surfaces and upon death the biomass with its contaminants sinks to the sediments. Through bio-mineralization in the sediment, the metals are stabilized, potentially generating in the long-term biogenic ore bodies. All processes are implemented within the mine waste and water management area. Brief examples are given of: -Acid Reduction Using Microbiology through sediment construction; -Alterations of the mineral surface on waste rock reducing sulphide oxidation by effective nutrient supply carried into the wastes by rain and; -Biological polishing “in alkaline and acid mine waste water by a pH adjustment (if needed) and adjusting nutrient imbalances; -Estimates of reductions in waste generation using efficient metals extraction processes. Boojum’s multidisciplinary team of scientists guided by experts of the industry, has laid the foundation for ecological engineering in publications and field demonstration projects. Moving forward we need to evaluate these demonstration project to use the results to build confidence in the approach of ecological engineering, only then can we achieve the paradigm shift needed for the future of the industry. Learn about the speaker: Margarete Kalin is Research Director and President of Boojum Research Ltd. The R& D firm in collaboration with mining companies, the Canadian government and research organizations , has developed and demonstrated an ecological toolkit, that leads to a self-sustaining decommissioned mine waste and water management area. More than 100 scientific publications, numerus chapters in technical books documenting the natural processes and approximately 150 project reports are available on line at http://biblio.laurentian.ca/boojum. Margarete received the Noranda Award for Outstanding Achievements in Land Reclamation from the Canadian Land Reclamation Association and the Teck-Cominco Environmental Award from the Canadian Institute for Mining and Metallurgy (CIM). She was nominated in 2005 as a Distinguished Lecturer by the CIM. She is certified as a QEP (Qualified Environmental Professional ) by the Institute of Professional Environmental Practice and as a Senior Ecologist by the Ecological Society of America. She has been Adjunct Professor at several Canadian universities. PolyRAP Polymer Modified Soil Stabilization - Asphalt Alternative Pavement Installation Procedure

03:50
PolyRAP products are cost-effective, environmentally safe, water dispersed polymers specifically engineered to bind with soils creating a pavement. These products are also ideally suited for heavy topical applications to prevent soil migration and light topical applications for dust and erosion control. APPLICATIONS INCLUDE: • Asphalt Alternative for Roads and Parking Lots • Heavy Topical for Mining and Haul Roads • Dust Control (prevents dust fine migration) • Erosion Control (mine tailings, steep slopes, hydroseeding) Unlike standard asphalt, polymers do not leech into the ground. In fact, a considerable amount of the oil and tar that are originally laid down on asphalt roads leech into the soil below, getting into our waterways, plant life, and overall surrounding environment (that's one of the reasons why they go from black to grey over a few years). Our final product typically consists of less than 1% polymer, while asphalt consists of roughly 5% oil and tar. This oil and tar require temperatures of up to 400 degrees to be placed while polymer is placed at room temperature. USING EXISTING GRAVEL ON UNPAVED ROADS By using the existing soil, POLYRAP minimizes the amount of imported material. Whereas most roadways are made from 100% virgin material imported from up to 100 miles away, POLYRAP has the ability to maximize the use of in-situ materials and often require less than 20% virgin material significantly reducing transportation costs and the effects of foreign aggregate. POLYRAP products dry clear resulting in a surface that is the same color as the soil -- A brown soil creates a brown road, red soil creates red roads. Because asphalt products cure black, they act as a heat sync for the life of the road, ultimately heating the surrounding environment. Recent developments in our products have enabled us to create surfaces using recycled materials such as recycled asphalt, crushed glass and many different types of manufacturing by-products that would have otherwise been disposed at the landfill. PolyRAP develops installation procedures and products in cooperation with Terratech. For more information please visit www.polyrap.net.

Rethinking carbon capture and sequestration

01:04:33
Capturing CO2 and injecting it in the subsurface is often presented as a major tool to prevent man-made global warming. Several successful pilot projects on carbon sequestration have been carried. In order to assess the degree to which this technique can have an impact on mitigation of man-made global warming, one needs to consider the amount of CO2 that needs to be injected. This leads to a number of questions that must be answered before this carbon capture and sequestration can be used on a scale that actually makes a difference in preventing climate change. (1) How can the cost of this process be reduced from its projected cost of 150 billion dollars per year? (2) How can the capture and injection be up-scaled by a factor of 1000 beyond current capabilities? (3) How can we predict and monitor leakage? Many action alternative to carbon capture and sequestration likely to be much cheaper and save energy as well. This talk was presented on April 10, 2013 as part of the IHS Markit Seminar Series, co-sponsored with the Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences. About the speaker: Roel Snieder holds the Keck Foundation Endowed Chair of Basic Exploration Science at the Colorado School of Mines. He received in 1984 a Masters degree in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics from Princeton University, and in 1987 a Ph.D. in seismology from Utrecht University. In 1993 he was appointed as professor of seismology at Utrecht University, where from 1997-2000 he was appointed as Dean of the Faculty of Earth Sciences. In 1997 he was a visiting professor at the Center for Wave Phenomena. Roel served on the editorial boards of Geophysical Journal International, Inverse Problems, and Reviews of Geophysics. In 2000 he was elected as Fellow of the American Geophysical Union for important contributions to geophysical inverse theory, seismic tomography, and the theory of surface waves. What Is Fracking?

03:01
You’ve heard of fracking, and you’re pretty sure lots of people don’t like it, but do you know how it actually works? Learn more at HowStuffWorks.com: http://science.howstuffworks.com/environmental/energy/hydraulic-fracking.htm Share on Facebook: http://goo.gl/M5kx1i Share on Twitter: http://goo.gl/FbuzEW Subscribe: http://goo.gl/ZYI7Gt Visit our site: http://www.brainstuffshow.com Fracking. You’ve heard of it. You know it’s controversial. But you might not know what it actually involves. Never fear: We’re here to put some fracking knowledge in your brain. Fracking is the delightfully cheeky-sounding nickname for Hydraulic Fracturing... which sounds a little bit less delightful and more like something you do to your enemies in Starcraft. But no! It is something we do to rocks. In the simplest terms, hydraulic fracturing is a way of getting more of the valuable fluids, like oil and natural gas, out of geologic formations under the ground. Deep under earth’s surface, there are deposits of rock that have huge reserves of oil and natural gas within them. But these fossil fuels aren’t like big lakes where you can just stick a straw in and suck. No, these reserves of oil and natural gas are found locked up in pores distributed throughout vast layers of rock, like shale. So how do you get them out at a reasonable pace? Let’s look at a typical fracking setup for something like shale gas: You start with a deep, vertical well, drilling a hole down to the level of the shale you want to mine. The depth will vary, but just for example, one company claims its average fracking well depth is 7,700 feet. That’s deep: almost one and a half miles, or about 2.3 kilometers. When you’re at the right depth, you take a 90-degree turn and continue to drill horizontally, parallel to the target rock layer. This horizontal section of the well can also travel thousands of feet. Now here’s where the “fracturing” comes in. First, you open up holes in the horizontal section of the pipe. Then, you vigorously push a liquid cocktail known as fracking fluid down into the borehole under high pressure. This fracking fluid is usually a mixture of water, some chemical additives -- like acids to help dissolve the rock, and gels to thicken the fluid -- and finally, solid particles called proppants – we’ll get to those in a second. When the mixture reaches the horizontal section of the pipe, it bleeds out through the holes into the surrounding rock, and the extremely high pressure causes the rock to form tons of little fractures, or cracks. Through these cracks, the reserves of fossil fuels contained in the rock can escape into the well to be pumped back up to the surface. What once was entombed in ancient rock is now on the way to powering your car or heating the water for your next shower. And those proppants I mentioned, which are often just grains of sand, help “prop” the cracks in the rock open, so the Earth’s precious bodily fluids continue to escape into the well without the miners applying continuous pressure. So that’s how it works, but then there’s the entirely separate question of whether fracking is a good idea. It’s controversial in many parts of the world. Some people claim it consumes too much fresh water, and worry about what will be done with the fracking fluid after it’s been used. And some opponents wonder if it will create earthquakes, or cause chemical contaminants to leak into our groundwater. Yellow Cradle to Grave (Uranium Mining Fallout)

14:49
The nuclear industry is a many-headed toxic beast – nuclear power and nuclear weapons are just the most visible ones. Mining, milling, processing, reprocessing, manufacturing, and transporting nuclear materials are some other heads of the beast that are less visible. All are desecrating Mother Earth and killing her peoples. It’s time to deal with the initial stage of this problem. We can begin by cleaning up the abandoned uranium mines and placing a National Environmental Security Moratorium on all uranium extraction. https://www.popularresistance.org/the-toxic-threat-of-abandoned-uranium-mines-in-the-united-states/ USA Cows Fed Copper To Hide Radiated Gray Spots ☠ Lake By Uranium Mine Melts Steel! surprise pop up bonus link Coldplay - Yellow https://youtu.be/yKNxeF4KMsY USA Cows Fed Copper To Hide Radiated Gray Spots ☠ Lake By Uranium Mine Melts Steel! https://youtu.be/d1lMSpP9WYQ Irresponsible corporations and negligent government agencies have abandoned more than 10,000 toxic uranium mines throughout the US. These hazardous mines poison our air, land and water and harm public health. Currently no laws require cleanup of these dangerous sites. A new campaign, Clean Up The Mines!, aims for remediation of these mines through federal legislation and action, and public education. Abandoned Uranium Mines (AUMs) The Environmental Protection Agency and US Geological Survey document over 10,000 abandoned uranium mines in the US, most in 15 western states on public, private, and tribal lands. Over 4,200 of these mines produced uranium that was sold to the US Atomic Energy Commission for use in nuclear weapons from the 1940s through the 1970s. Starting in the 1960s, much of the mining was done to provide fuel for nuclear power plants. There are several AUMs in and near the Grand Canyon, 169 of them within 40 miles of Mt. Rushmore, and eight right on the edge of Grand Teton / Yellowstone National Parks. One in seven (10 million) people in the western US lives within 50 miles of an AUM. CLICK HERE TO SIGN THE PETITION TO CLEAN UP THE MINES AND ALL Future Uranium Mining Down! http://www.cleanupthemines.org/action/ AUM hazards and contamination pathways. Physical hazards of AUMs come from unmarked, unprotected mine entrances, cliffs, falling rocks, and collapsing buildings and equipment. Wind picks up radioactive dust from rock piles and blows it for miles people breathe fine particles into their lungs, resulting in much higher levels of lung cancer near AUMs. People carry the radioactive dust, dirt, and mud around on their clothes and shoes, spreading the contamination to their homes and families. One of the decay elements of uranium is radon gas. It seeps up through the ground in many areas around mine sites where people and animals breathe it in. Exposure to radon gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the US. Water picks up radiation in a variety of ways – rain washes radioactive dust from the air and rocks and carries it into streams and rivers. Surface and underground water dissolve uranium from rock and dust. This is particularly true of uranium that has been exposed to oxygen, which changes it from UIV to UVI, which is more soluble in water. (This is the principle used in ‘In Situ Leaching’, similar to fracking techniques, the method most commonly used now.) The result is polluted rivers, lakes, and aquifers, with no safe available drinking water for thousands of communities. Тайна спящего казахского села! The Great Mystery of falling asleep Kazakh village!

02:34
ENGLISH SUBTITLES. More than two years residents of only the one village massively sleep for several days, and no one can understand why. Until January 40 villagers Kalachi asleep in broad daylight. Chief physician of the hospital Cabrashit Almagametov: "Typical Clinic, as well as in other cases: lethargy, drowsiness, double vision, disturbance of moving." The fact that local doctors explained as typical pattern but for scientists - unexplained anomaly, an enigma. To solve the mystery of the sleeping village try and outside of Kazakhstan. It`s too unusual story but not unique in the world. A journalist asks a sleepy woman: "Have you ever received? Yesterday?" A resident of the village Natalia Zhavaronkova answers: "It is said to me that yesterday but it seems to me - today." To recall all facts Natalia Zhavaronkova not even trying. In deep sleep she fell straight while fishing. For the second time in three months. And such as it is - an entire village. Russia's chief doctor of the Sleep Medicine Center Natalia Belinskaya: "It can randomly fall and fall asleep anywhere, in any position of the body. It can be a minute, it can be 30 minutes or more." Therefore, experts have put forward a different version. Somnology expert Michael Polouektov: "The most unusual in this story, of course, is that they after sleeping does not unhealthy. Medicine knows a little of these states, so it begs the question, is not this a manifestation of any form of mass trance, mass hysteria, if may say so. " The reason of mental disorder, according to the doctors, it may be depression which feel constantly villagers. Earlier in this village Kalachi mined uranium. Now all the mines closed, there is no work, people leave this place. It is in these closed uranium mines need to search answers, says Russian Professor Leonid Rikhvanov from Tomsk. According to him after the flooding of mines on the surface began to climb the decay product of uranium - gas radon. Professor of the Department of Environmental Geoscience and geochemistry of Tomsk Polytechnic University Leonid Rikhvanov: "The gas that induce toxic effect will drive a person in this dream state, and the person falls asleep. Relatives of radon from the chemical table of Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev - xenon, krypton, argon and others - were known in medicine for pain relief during surgeries." Conventional methods of measurement of radiation to determine the status of radon in the air is extremely difficult, said the scientist. Therefore, previous studies have shown nothing. Without waiting for the mystery disease will be revealed, Kazakh authorities intend to completely resettle the village elsewhere.

Satellite Applications and Extractive Industries

03:22
Around 3.5 billion people live in countries rich in oil, gas or minerals. Non-renewable mineral resources play a dominant role in 81 countries. The way that extractive industries operate and are regulated therefore has a huge impact globally, as well as on local communities. Satellite applications have been employed by extractive industries for many years, but there are still many more ways they can be used to enable responsible and sustainable development and growth. Satellite-based technologies can offer benefits to industry and regulators at each stage of the extraction process, including exploration, evaluation, development, production and closure. They can aid: mapping and measurement; visualisation of proposals; monitoring of development, operations and restoration of the environment after operations cease; and optimisation of production.
