Dr. Michel Aubertin is the Scientific Director of the Research Institute on Mines and Environment (RIME UQAT-Polytechnique) and a professor at Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal. Dr. Aubertin gives a keynote presentation on work at the Research Institute of Mines and Environment (RIME). This is Part 1 of the presentation. He introduces the principles of waste rock management, both open pit and underground. He also discusses the challenges of tailings after processing the ore. RIME has been dealing mainly with hard rock mines; the low concentration of minerals in the ore produces sizeable quantities of waste rock and tailings from Quebec mines. Dr. Aubertin emphasizes waste rock piles are not dumps; they are engineered structures. He discusses the knowledge gained in the twelve years that the Research Chair has existed at Polytechnique Montreal and UQAT, and explains the significance of the partnerships between the universities, government and industry companies such as Lamgold and Osisko. The benefits of the collaboration include such benefits as: the new lab facilities in both university locations, the 139 graduate students hired to do research, and the 120 academic papers published. Dr. Aubertin describes the details of several projects, including: improving surface disposal of tailings, optimizing surface disposal of waste rock, and water quality production - including mathematical modeling of the hydro-chemical processes. By Andrea Hanson Winner, Best Picture, Best Actress, 2016 Laurentian University Eagle Awards (VLWL) Subarctic regions are recognized as one of the largest remaining pristine ecosystems in the world. They have been subject to increasing pressure from mining activities as demands for resources grow. The remote location of these new mining developments pose a challenge for both development and reclamation efforts. In regards to mine reclamation, there is often a shortage of material available to be re-used to create cover soils post closure. Also, it is not ideal to transport external materials to create these cover soils. Therefore, it is important for these developments to explore how they can efficiently use material readily available to them create effective cover soils during the mine reclamation process. Andrea Hanson, a graduate student at Laurentian University, is examining how mines in northern regions can use mineral and organic substrates readily available - including their mining by-products - to create a cover soil with suitable conditions for vegetation establishment during mine reclamation. Her team's research is specifically focused on the reclamation of diamond mine waste at the De Beers Victor Diamond Mine in the Hudson Bay Lowlands of Ontario’s Far North. By determining the most suitable conditions for vegetation establishment, they will provide insight into the challenges associated with re-vegetation of subarctic environments, and provide the Victor Mine with suggestions for a reclamation protocol upon closure. Achieving sustainability for resource exploitation in the subarctic requires a greater understanding of ecosystem processes and rehabilitation potential of these regions.

"Back in 2002 we had some volunteers create some maps for us," she said. "There were just massive amounts of land that are not, in any way, shape or form, developed." Researchers from the Natural Resources Defense Council found that about 1.2 million acres and about 500 mountains were flattened by surface mining in central Appalachia. An aerial imagery analysis by NRDC found that about 90 percent of mountaintop removal sites were not converted to economic uses. Environmentalism is a global priority. That's a fact no one is willing to contest. But within the sustainability arena, there is still plenty of room for debate on how to best achieve goals. In conjunction with Ohio University's designation of April as Earth Month, Sustainability Coordinator Sonia Marcus takes on faculty members from across the academic spectrum, addressing some of the most controversial issues facing the environment, both locally and globally. These debates showcase the wide diversity of opinions that coexist within the community of environmental advocates. In today's debate, Marcus and Associate Professor of Journalism Bernhard Debatin discuss the legitimacy of clean coal -- or methods used by coal producers and utilities to reduce coal's environmental impact. Debatin addresses this topic among many local environmental concerns in his recently created journalism course, "Localizing Environmental and Science Journalism." The course was triggered by Debatin's involvement in the Kanawha Environmental Education Project, a professional development series that aims to integrate concepts of environmental sustainability into Ohio University's curriculum. In addition to teaching environmental journalism, Debatin has devoted the past two years to researching the environmental and social impacts of coal mining in Athens County.

As Congress continues to push for a comprehensive clean energy and climate bill, questions remain regarding the coal industry's position on the essential science of climate change and their potential to provide cleaner, lower-carbon fuel in the decades to come. The House-passed Waxman-Markey bill offered a pathway for coal to transition to carbon capture and sequestration technologies. The coal mining industry has seen significant developments over the last two weeks. A mining accident in West Virginia has renewed questions about the safety of coal extraction, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has offered new rules on the environmental and health impacts of mountaintop mining. You’ve heard of it. You know it’s controversial. But you might not know what it actually involves. Never fear: We’re here to put some fracking knowledge in your brain. Fracking is the delightfully cheeky-sounding nickname for Hydraulic Fracturing... which sounds a little bit less delightful and more like something you do to your enemies in Starcraft. But no! It is something we do to rocks. In the simplest terms, hydraulic fracturing is a way of getting more of the valuable fluids, like oil and natural gas, out of geologic formations under the ground. Deep under earth’s surface, there are deposits of rock that have huge reserves of oil and natural gas within them. But these fossil fuels aren’t like big lakes where you can just stick a straw in and suck. No, these reserves of oil and natural gas are found locked up in pores distributed throughout vast layers of rock, like shale. So how do you get them out at a reasonable pace? Let’s look at a typical fracking setup for something like shale gas: You start with a deep, vertical well, drilling a hole down to the level of the shale you want to mine. The depth will vary, but just for example, one company claims its average fracking well depth is 7,700 feet. That’s deep: almost one and a half miles, or about 2.3 kilometers. When you’re at the right depth, you take a 90-degree turn and continue to drill horizontally, parallel to the target rock layer. This horizontal section of the well can also travel thousands of feet. Now here’s where the “fracturing” comes in. First, you open up holes in the horizontal section of the pipe. Then, you vigorously push a liquid cocktail known as fracking fluid down into the borehole under high pressure. This fracking fluid is usually a mixture of water, some chemical additives -- like acids to help dissolve the rock, and gels to thicken the fluid -- and finally, solid particles called proppants – we’ll get to those in a second. When the mixture reaches the horizontal section of the pipe, it bleeds out through the holes into the surrounding rock, and the extremely high pressure causes the rock to form tons of little fractures, or cracks. Through these cracks, the reserves of fossil fuels contained in the rock can escape into the well to be pumped back up to the surface. What once was entombed in ancient rock is now on the way to powering your car or heating the water for your next shower. And those proppants I mentioned, which are often just grains of sand, help “prop” the cracks in the rock open, so the Earth’s precious bodily fluids continue to escape into the well without the miners applying continuous pressure. So that’s how it works, but then there’s the entirely separate question of whether fracking is a good idea. It’s controversial in many parts of the world. Some people claim it consumes too much fresh water, and worry about what will be done with the fracking fluid after it’s been used. And some opponents wonder if it will create earthquakes, or cause chemical contaminants to leak into our groundwater. Rethinking carbon capture and sequestration

Capturing CO2 and injecting it in the subsurface is often presented as a major tool to prevent man-made global warming. Several successful pilot projects on carbon sequestration have been carried. In order to assess the degree to which this technique can have an impact on mitigation of man-made global warming, one needs to consider the amount of CO2 that needs to be injected. This leads to a number of questions that must be answered before this carbon capture and sequestration can be used on a scale that actually makes a difference in preventing climate change. (1) How can the cost of this process be reduced from its projected cost of 150 billion dollars per year? (2) How can the capture and injection be up-scaled by a factor of 1000 beyond current capabilities? (3) How can we predict and monitor leakage? Many action alternative to carbon capture and sequestration likely to be much cheaper and save energy as well. This talk was presented on April 10, 2013 as part of the IHS Markit Seminar Series, co-sponsored with the Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences. About the speaker: Roel Snieder holds the Keck Foundation Endowed Chair of Basic Exploration Science at the Colorado School of Mines. He received in 1984 a Masters degree in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics from Princeton University, and in 1987 a Ph.D. in seismology from Utrecht University. In 1993 he was appointed as professor of seismology at Utrecht University, where from 1997-2000 he was appointed as Dean of the Faculty of Earth Sciences. In 1997 he was a visiting professor at the Center for Wave Phenomena. Roel served on the editorial boards of Geophysical Journal International, Inverse Problems, and Reviews of Geophysics. In 2000 he was elected as Fellow of the American Geophysical Union for important contributions to geophysical inverse theory, seismic tomography, and the theory of surface waves.
