Discovering a Sapphire Mine in Sri Lanka

23:30
Nick Hodgson of Astrogems.com, by chance was invited into a sapphire mine on the edge of a small township while travelling through Sri Lanka, this is an Off the Cuff video of what took place. Very educational and you feel like you just journeyed there yourself! Hard to believe that the main street was right beside the mine - even the cows seemed oblivious!

How Gems are Mined in Sri Lanka

01:15
It's well known all over the world that Sri Lanka has been mining gemstones for thousands of years. This is how that mining takes place.
Gemstone mining in Ratnapura, Sri Lanka and Rough Sapphires found

00:32
This rough was found right during our mining trip in May 2017. Video by Ruwanpura Gems. Rough sapphires in various sizes and qualities come straight from the ground right in front of our eyes while shooting this video. Ratnapura is one of the major active mining areas in Sri Lanka. It produces sapphire in many colors, ruby, spinel, tourmaline, alexandrite and other gemstones. Large-scale mechanized mining allows to excavate big pits and work through tons of soil. Large scale gemstone mining is a complex process with lots of machinery involved. Gem mining in Sri Lanka gets many people employed, they work hard day by day to make a living and develop strong muscles. Gem-quality rough is still very hard to produce. Most of rough undertakes some kind of treatment (geuda, heat, beryllium, etc) to result in market-quality sellable gemstones. Добыча драгоценных камней на Шри-Ланке. Месторождение Ратнапура. Сырье сапфиров разных цветов, добытых за время нашей поездки. ***Sapphires splendidly cover the colour spectrum from one end to the other. Though technically a chemically pure sapphire would be colourless, trace minerals inside the stones create the kaleidoscope of tones and saturations reflected. Because of this, each piece is unique in both colour and clarity. Fine quality sapphires are rarer than diamonds. And some are more sought after than others such as the famous blue Ceylon sapphire which has been coveted by royalty for centuries.*** (extract from the MANY FACES OF SAPPHIRE chapter of the book "Sri Lanka Gems" by Vladyslav Yavorskyy)

Gemstone Mining in Ratnapura, Sri Lanka - How It's Done

03:21
This is a short video of how Gemstone mining happens in Ratnapura, Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka’s gem industry has a very long and colorful history. Sri Lanka was affectionately known as Ratna-Dweepa which means Gem Island. The name is a reflection of its natural wealth. Marco Polo wrote that the island had the best sapphires, topazes, amethysts, and other gems in the world. Ptolemy, the 2nd century astronomer recorded that beryl and sapphire were the mainstay of Sri Lanka’s gem industry. Records from sailors that visited the island states that they brought back “jewels of Serendib”. Serendib was the ancient name given to the island by middle – eastern and Persian traders that crossed the Indian Ocean to trade gems from Sri Lanka to the East during the 4th and 5th century. Sri Lanka, geologically speaking is an extremely old country. Ninety percent of the rocks of the island are of Precambrian age, 560 million to 2,400 million years ago. The gems form in sedimentary residual gem deposits, eluvial deposits, metamorphic deposits, skarn and calcium-rich rocks. Nearly all the gem formations in Sri Lanka are located in the central high-grade metamorphic terrain of the Highland Complex. The gem deposits are classified as sedimentary, metamorphic and magmatic; the sedimentary types being the most abundant. The mineralogy of the gem deposits varies widely with, among others, corundum (sapphire, ruby), chrysoberyl, beryl, spinel, topaz, zircon, tourmaline, garnet being common. Residual deposits are mainly found in flood plains of rivers and streams. The metamorphic types of gems constitute 90% of the gem deposits in Sri Lanka. It has been estimated that nearly 25% of the total land area of Sri Lanka is potentially gem-bearing, making Sri Lanka one of the countries with the highest density of gem deposits compared to its landmass. Ratnapura contains the most gem deposits and derived its name from the gem industry. Ratnapura means “city of gems”.

Gemstone mining in Ratnapura, Sri Lanka with Yavorskky

01:00
***Sri Lanka is the world’s oldest continuous source of coloured gems. The Indian diamonds which enriched the Mughals are all but exhausted, the emeralds of Colombia were unknown outside of South America until a few centuries ago, but Sri Lanka can boast almost 2,500 years of production of some of the most beautiful of gemstones, from the shimmering beauty of cat’s eyes to bright sapphires.*** (extract from SRI LANKA - ISLAND OF GEMS chapters of the book "Sri Lanka Gems") Yavorskyy mining trip to Sri Lanka, May 2017. Directed by Jenya Bilousov (Gem Voyage). Ratnapura is one of the major active mining areas in Sri Lanka. Sapphire mining in Elahera, Sri Lanka with Yavorskyy

00:52
This is what a small-scale family mining looks like in Sri Lanka. An old man and a boy are washing the gravel together near their house in the jungle. A chance of finding a gem-quality rock is very low but still they can spot a nice sapphire or garnet and earn living for their family. Elahera (Elahara) is a famous historical mining area in Sri Lanka that produced the finest blue sapphires in the 80s with the top prized royal blue color and velvety Kashmir-like texture. Elahera is a beautiful destination for photography and enjoying the wild serene nature, too. *** What is it about the Kashmir stone that I find most attractive? I suppose it is staying power. Plenty of sapphires look magnificent under one light, but when brought into another, shed their beauty. Not so for these gems from the mighty Himalaya. The finest Kashmir stones shine the blue fantastic in all lights. Kashmir blues have a velvet-like texture, softness that envelopes all like a sticky blanket, banishing darkness with that bluest of blues. *** (extract from the BLUE SAPPHIRE chapter of the book 'Gemstones. Touring Sapphire Mines and the town of Ratnapura Sri Lanka. River Mining & Shaft Mining.

01:22
Taking a first hand look at some of our suppliers sapphire mining operations. The river mines and shaft mines leave the least amount of environmental footprint. Some of the shafts go 60 - 100 metres deep, and then another 60 - 100 metres across, underground, following the sapphire deposits. The river mining method combs the ground, and pulls the river bed rock into an eddy, where the sapphires and picking up, sifted, and selected by hand out of the rocks.

"Rubies from Montepuez, Mozambique" by GIA

18:09
In this video, you’ll explore Mozambique’s Montepuez ruby deposit with GIA’s dedicated field gemology team. First, you’ll see how the legal owner of the mining rights—Montepuez Ruby Mining (MRM), a subsidiary of the Gemfields corporation—works the area in steps from prospecting through separating the rubies from the ore, to sorting and eventual sale at their Singapore rough auction. In the second part you’ll also catch a glimpse of a day in the life of the thousands of unlicensed miners—garimpeiros—who conduct unauthorized mining in the MRM-owned area. Since spring 2009, this east African country has emerged as the world’s leading ruby source. As Field Gemologist Vincent Pardieu says of the Montepuez ruby deposit: “I have never seen any place where you have this combination of quantity, nice color, and nice clarity.” Every gem miner dreams of finding a big stone one day. “The garimpeiros here, most of them are local (meaning Mozambican) people,” explains Pardieu, “but there are also some Tanzanians here who are working with them. And the Tanzanians have a very good knowledge of ruby mining because you have ruby mining in Tanzania for more than 50 years.” You’ll see the conditions garimpeiros work under—the pits, the dirt—the rubies they find and how they live, and visit a garimpeiro village. Finally, you’ll visit foreign buyers in Montepuez, which, Pardieu explains, consist of “about 500 to 600 Thai people and about 100 people from Sri Lanka.” The cash gained by these buyers provides the economic impetus for continuing unauthorized mining inside the MRM perimeter. This GIA Field Expedition (FE56) took place in September 2014. Besides Pardieu, the participants were cameraman Didier Gruel, Field Gemologist Andy Lucas, Gems & Gemology Technical Editor Dr. Tao Hsu, and Field Gemologist trainee Stanislas Detroyat.
