U2 - The Ballad of Springhill Mining Disaster

03:45
Cette chanson écrite par Peggy Seeger sous le titre original The Ballad of Springhill pour commémorer la catastrophe survenue à la mine de Springhill en 1958, n'a jamais été enregistrée par U2. Paroles : In the town of Springhill, Nova Scotia Down in the dark of the Cumberland Mine There's blood on the coal and the miners lie In the roads that never saw sun nor sky. (x2) In the town of Springhill, you don't sleep easy Often the earth will tremble and roar When the earth is restless, miners die Bone and blood is the price of coal. (x2) In the town of Springhill, Nova Scotia Late in the year of fifty-eight Day still comes and the sun still shines (But it's) Dark as the grave in the Cumberland mine. (x2) Down at the coal face, miners working Rattle of the belt and the cutter's blade Rumble of the rock and the walls closed round (The) Living and the dead men two miles down. (x2) Twelve men lay two miles from the pitshaft Twelve men lay in the dark and sang Long hot days in the miners tomb (It was) Three feet high and a hundred long. (x2) Three days past and the lamps gave out And Caleb Rushton got up and and said There's no more water, or light, or bread (So we'll) Live on song and hope instead. (x2) Listen for the shouts of the barefaced miners Listen thru the rubble for a rescue team Six hundred feet of coal and slag Hope imprisoned in a three foot seam. (x2) Eight days passes and some were rescued Leaving the dead to lie alone Thru all their lives they dug their grave Two miles of earth for a marking stone. (x2)

~ PETER, PAUL AND MARY ~ The Ballad Of Spring Hill

03:14
~ THE BALLAD OF SPRING HILL ~ (Seegar-McColl) "There were three major coal mining disasters in Canada in 1891,1956 and 1958 in different mines within the Springhill coalfield, near the town of Springhill in cumberland County, near Nova Scotia. Following the third disaster in 1958 the companies shut it`s mining operations in Springhill and they never reopened. Today the mine properties, among the greatest in the world (2 miles) and filled with water, are owned by the government of Nova Scotia and provide Springhill`s idustrial park with a source of geothermal heat". The first mining disaster killed 125 men. The second killed 35 men that both were due to explosions and fire. The third disaster was caused by an underground quake that killed 74 miners. The accumulation of all three disasters made news thoughout the world. Peter, Paul and Mary sing about the 1958 quake disaster. Song written by Seegar-McColl.

The Springhill Mine Disaster (michi)

04:11
The disaster was caused not by a collapse but by a "bump," the rock underfoot buckling and abruptly rising about four feet. Some miners were killed outright and others trapped by rockfalls dislodged by the bump. The disaster is notable for several reasons: •According to Harold Brine, the bump followed a change away from staggered supporting walls to walls that were lined up, propagating the fault, because of expert opinion that staggered walls were not needed. •After six days the mining officials wanted to stop rescue operations on the grounds that anyone still underground must be dead. 82 out of 175 men had been rescued. The miners refused to stop digging until they found bodies or survivors. •After six more days, the miners made contact with twelve more survivors, and got them out the next day. On November first, six more men were rescued. They were the last survivors. •The mining company did not pay the miners for their time underground, nor compensate them, nor even express any regret to the survivors.

Guitar: The Springhill Disaster (Including lyrics and chords).

05:07
Having been introduced to some new songs recently by Tony Oppegard, the old grey matter got to working on remembering a song I heard in the 60s about a mining disaster. Eventually I recalled its name and found the lyrics for it. Written by Peggy Seeger who was married to Ewan MacColl the lyrics I have used are those purported to be MacColl's but I suspect that whoever transcribed them could not hear correctly the name of the miner in the sixth verse. I should have checked out other sites before accepting this but did not. therefore I sing 'Kaehler Brushen' which I now realise should have been ;Caleb Rushton'! (One of the pitfalls of the free internet and transcribing by ear!!) There had been a number of mining disasters in the mines of Springhill in the Cumberland County of Nova Scotia, but this song was probably inspired by one in 1958 after which, the mines at Springhill were closed for good.

303. Springhill Mine Disaster (Peggy Seeger & Ewan MacColl)

03:14
The Springhill mining disaster of this song occurred in 1958 A number of miners trapped underground were miraculously rescued after eight days. Peggy Seeger, who was living in Paris at the time, saw the reports of the disaster on television and was moved to write about it. Because she had never been down a mine, she later asked Ewan MacColl to help her with it. He added at least one verse, probably the third. The kind of situation described in this song is still a frequent occurrence in China, where I was living for five years. So many people have given their lives in this way throughout history. The song has been recorded by many artists, including Ewan MacColl (of course), Peter, Paul and Mary, Theodore Bikel, Martin Carthy, Bob Gibson, Luke Kelly and U2. Lyrics and chords of this song can be found here: http://raymondfolk.wickifoundry.com/page/The+Springhill+Mine+Disaster You can see a playlist of my Ewan MacColl songs here: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=13C3631C4FEAFDC2 You can see a playlist of my mining songs here: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=CF909DA14CE415DF For lyrics and chords of all my songs, please see my website: http://raymondfolk.wikifoundry.com

Peggy Seeger sings Springhill Mining Disaster

At a talk in her old neighborhood, Chevy Chase, MD, Peggy told us about writing this song based on the radio reports that were coming in. It is often mistakenly labeled "traditional", hence her commentary at the end. Recorded on March 15, 2014.

Peggy Seeger song known as Ballad of Spring Hill and the Springhill Mining Disaster, here performed by The Ivy League Trio (Coral) Norris O'Neill, Bob Hider and Beverly Galloway. Photos at the end are all of the survivors. All pix (and the map) are REAL. The movie footage is of course fiction, from a classic British film called "The Stars Look Down" (1940). The Ivy League Trio made three albums. The song is on: "Folk Songs Rare and Well Done"

I've learnt about 4 chords on the guitar and my poor rusty old voice is given a work-out it'll never forget as I attempt to sing in tune!!!! That plus a capo which refuse to stay in place ....oh dear.... But I love this song, and let me tell you there are great renditions out there by musicians as vast and varied as U2 to my own personal favourite by Luke Kelly, so please don't let me hacking this song, put you off listening to those fantastic versions!!!!
