JOURNEY TOWARDS RESPONSIBLE MINING

07:12
Mining has important economic, environmental, labour and social impacts in regions where it is carried out. Ensuring that the adverse impacts are minimized and the benefits from mining to the impacted community are optimized becomes critical for mining sector. Negative social and environmental impacts of mining are avoidable if responsible practices are adopted. The launch of Code of Responsible Extraction (CORE) in 2015, paved the way towards transition with the many interventions CORE supported towards a greater positive impact in the lives of miners, environmental sustainability and the industry at large. "Journey Towards Responsible Mining" is a short video film that captures the transformation brought about by the interventions of CORE

Integrated Mining and processing systems design for eco efficiency

45:00
Speaker: Laurie Reemeyer, Principal Consultant, Resourceful Paths Talk: Integrated mining and processing systems design for eco-efficiency Abstract: The mining industry faces increasing economic, environmental, and social challenges as easier deposits deplete and ores become more difficult to mine and process, and more stringent environmental and social standards must be met. While these factors increase costs and risks, they also present opportunities for a more integrated approach to mining, processing, materials handling, and waste management. Two areas of particular risk are in tailings and water management. As mining and processing tonnage rates continue to increase, the disturbance footprints, water and energy consumption, and scale of tailings storage facilities also rise. These factors can be mitigated by more selective mining, ore sorting, and pre-concentration, and more intensive tailings dewatering. Such alternatives must be considered in conjunction with the selection of mining method, metallurgical flowsheets, major equipment selection, and key process design criteria. Models for integrated design and possibilities for reducing environmental impact are reviewed.
Mining for Sustainable Development: the value of IGF's MPF Asssessment

07:12
Mining is often left out of conversations about sustainable development. But a dedicated group of people is working to ensure that the impacts of mining are reduced and that the benefits are shared. The Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF) offers member governments the opportunity to have their policies, laws and regulations assessed by experts. The IGF's MPF Assessment identifies strengths, weaknesses and opportunities for improvement by comparing existing practices with the ideals laid out in its flagship Mining Policy Framework. Suriname -- one of IGF's founding members -- is currently revising its mining policies and requested assistance from the IGF Secretariat. A team flew down in September 2016. This is what we learned. 06:14
Iron ores are rocks and minerals from which metallic iron can be economically extracted. The ores are usually rich in iron oxides and vary in color from dark grey, bright yellow, deep purple, to rusty red. The iron itself is usually found in the form of magnetite (Fe 3O 4, 72.4% Fe), hematite (Fe 2O 3, 69.9% Fe), goethite (FeO(OH), 62.9% Fe), limonite (FeO(OH).n(H2O)) or siderite (FeCO3, 48.2% Fe). Ores containing very high quantities of hematite or magnetite (greater than ~60% iron) are known as "natural ore" or "direct shipping ore", meaning they can be fed directly into iron-making blast furnaces. Iron ore is the raw material used to make pig iron, which is one of the main raw materials to make steel. 98% of the mined iron ore is used to make steel. Indeed, it has been argued that iron ore is "more integral to the global economy than any other commodity, except perhaps oil". Full news : https://www.google.co.in/amp/s/www.thehindubusinessline.com/companies/nmdc-ltd-suspends-iron-ore-mining-in-karnataka/article25548678.ece/amp/ 👉👉👉NMDC Ltd suspends iron ore-mining in Karnataka PTI Updated on November 20, 2018 NMDC Limited has suspended iron ore-mining from its Donimalai mine in Karnataka following the decision of the State government to impose 80 per cent premium on the iron ore sales from the mine, according to a regulatory filing by the public sector undertaking. The National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) said it has requested the government to reconsider its decision and the Karnataka Chief Minister Kumaraswamy had convened a meeting with senior officials on November 14. “In response to our representation, the Chief Minister had convened the urgent high-level meeting on November 14 in Bengaluru and directed all the concerned to re-look into the representation given by us regarding the legal and other issues raised,” the company said. The meeting ended on a positive note and there was information that the Karnataka cabinet has not taken any decision to cancel the lease of Donimalai to NMDC, it said. Pending the decision on representation by the Karnataka government, production has been temporarily suspended, the NMDC said. Sources said if the Karnataka government decided to stick to the 80 per cent premium, NMDC would be losing Rs 1,348 per tonne and may result in a loss of Rs 944 crore per annum as it mines about seven million tonnes of iron ore per annum from Donimalai. The lease of Donimalai mine has already been extended by the Karnataka government with effect from November 4 for 20 years, NMDC said. The Karnataka cabinet has approved the mining lease of Donimalai till November 2038, on payment of 80 per cent of the average sale value as published by Indian Bureau of Mines, the NMDC said. “Since imposition of such conditions is not according to the MMDR (Amendment) Act, 2015 read with Mineral (Mining by Government Companies) Rules, 2015 and as it is also not economically viable, we have raised the issue with the Karnataka Chief Minister,” the NMDC said.

Nestled deep within the eastern Ozarks is an area known as the Old Lead Belt; it is a major part of the great Southeast Missouri lead district, the premier lead mining district of the world. The mining industry in this area has played an important role in Missouri's economic and social fabric for more than 280 years. St. Joseph Lead Co. is one of the major corporate enterprises that came to Missouri to mine lead. Lead and zinc production involved crushing and grinding the mined rock to standard sizes and separating the ore. This left behind piles of leftover rock called tailings that covered 4,000 acres in southeastern Cherokee County. These wastes were also a source of contamination. Lead, zinc, and cadmium from the tailings leached into the shallow ground water, contaminating local wells, and runoff moved contaminants into nearby streams and rivers. Wind also blew fine metal-bearing dust (from tailings piles and roads made of tailings) into the air, spreading the contamination to nearby non-mined areas. Radon gas from the mining operations was detected in the air around Galena. During the 1980's, this area was considered one of the most environmentally blighted in the nation. Some of the cleanup efforts are funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Superfund. The EPA began working in the area in the early 1980's and work is ongoing. The EPA divided the Cherokee County Site into six subsites that correspond to six general mining locations, including the areas around Galena, Baxter Springs, and Treece, Kansas. Because the area in and around Galena had some of the worst contamination, early cleanup efforts were centered there. Chief among these was the provision of safe water supply for rural residents whose wells had been contaminated. Two new wells were constructed in the deep aquifer, and a new rural water district was formed that currently provides over 500 households with a long-term source of clean drinking water. From 1997 to 1999, contaminated soil was removed from 602 residential properties in Galena and replaced with clean backfill and grass sod or seed; fifty additional properties were remediated in 2000 and 2001. Remediation of residential soils has been completed in Treece and is ongoing in Baxter Springs. Cleanup continues at other sites in southeastern Kansas. For more information, check the EPA Region 7's website: http://www.epa.gov/region07/index.html . It does not matter if a person breathes in, swallows, or absorbs lead particles, the health effects are the same; however, the body absorbs higher levels of lead when it is breathed in. Within our bodies, lead is absorbed and stored in our bones, blood, and tissues. It does not stay there permanently, rather it is stored there as a source of continual internal exposure. Lead poisoning can happen if a person is exposed to very high levels of lead over a short period of time. When this happens, a person may feel: Abdominal pain, Constipated, Excessively tired, Headache, Irritable, Loss of appetite, Memory loss, Pain or tingling in the hands and/or feet and Weak. Because these symptoms may occur slowly or may be caused by other things, lead poisoning can be easily overlooked as their cause. Being exposed to high levels of lead may cause anemia, weakness, and kidney and brain damage. Very high lead exposure can cause death. A person who is exposed to lead over time may feel: Abdominal pain, Constipated, Depressed, Distracted, Forgetful, Irritable, Nauseous/Sick. People with prolonged exposure to lead may also be at risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney disease, and reduced fertility. The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) have determined that lead is probably cancer-causing in humans. This clip is from the 1934 US Bureau of Mines film (made in cooperation with the St. Joseph Lead Company), THE STORY OF LEAD MINING AND MILLING. The entire film shows mining and milling operations in Southeast Missouri after diamond drills have located a lead vein. The film also shows the dairy, school, hospital, and offices of the St. Joseph Lead Company. The entire film is available at the US National Archives in Maryland.

Afghanistan explores mining opportunities

02:34
Subscribe to our channel http://bit.ly/AJSubscribe Afghanistan's finance minister says the economy will easily survive the departure of international forces next year. His optimism is based on reports that the country has huge reserves of natural resources - mostly copper. The US estimates that Afghanistan could be sitting on deposits worth one trillion dollars. That includes gold, iron ore, tin and tungsten. It also has deposits of uranium. And precious stones, including emeralds. But for now, agriculture remains Afghanistan's biggest export earner among its top sellers are fruit and nuts, tobacco, and wool. Jennifer Glasse reports on one potential mine in Kabul province that is also a training ground for Afghans in the mining industry. 11_Sci_Lithosphere_001_Mineral Resources of the Lithosphere_Learner video Learner Video In the first lesson learners are introduced to the earths crust and its composition. They find out that mineral compounds combine to form different types of rock and that these minerals are unevenly distributed within rock. Minerals are defined as inorganic substances with a definite chemical composition. The learners discover that by observing a sample of rock they can analyse its components and develop insight into how it was formed. The lesson also investigates the history of our ability to extract metals from ore; this is closely related to our capacity to harness fire. Learners are briefly exposed to the social and environmental impact of mining. Mindset Network Copyright Notice. ( E00061701 )

National Seminar on Road Map Towards Sustainable Mining

07:30
I am pleased to take this opportunity, it is my great delight to participate and present technical paper in MEAI’s National Seminar “Road Map To-wards Sustainable Mining” organized by MEAI with support of DGMS, DMGK and MSAK. It is an honor for me to evolution of knowledge at your kind consideration. This Technical paper contents the brief meaning of sustainable mining, Management information system, Human Resource Development Training scope in sustainable mining & Responsibilities. Miners Job stress impact on sustainable mining and Strategies for miners working pressure. It is my privilege to being a part of the event. Thank you sir, Yours truly, Shivayogi G Abbigeri, Meaning of Sustainable Mining Sustainable mining refers to the growth of our natural resources (minerals) and energy resources, onshore and offshore, in a way that make best (maximum) use of the economic and social benefits while minimizing the environmental impacts of mining. It integrates environmental, economic, safety and community aspects in all stages of a project. The term sustainable development means different things to different people. But, in essence, it is concerned with meeting the needs of people today without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainable mining concerned with meeting the needs of people today without compromising the gift of future generations to meet their own needs. According to Kirkey, "Green mining is defined as technologies, best practices and mine processes that are implemented as a means to reduce the environmental impacts associated with the extraction and processing of metals and minerals. Examples include the reduction of greenhouse gases, selective mining approaches to reduce the ecological footprint, and reduction in chemical use. He also says that this technology "helps reduce operating costs for the mining industry and improve its competitiveness". Kirkey says, "Reducing the environmental impact of mining and related activities continues to be one of the most significant and important challenges for the sector. The industry’s public image is strongly together to its environmental performance and recognizes that it must improve to ensure it remains responsible, competitive and productive." The demand for mineral resources increases, so the pressure on the environment. Land quality deficiency, decrease of water resources and corrupt of groundwater, air pollution from dust and other pollutants. These processes need to be addressed in the initial stages, in order to ensure that best practices are preventative measure in the arrangement of the industry. Mining can become environmentally sustainable by developing and join together practices that reduce the environmental impact of mining operations. India’s domestic, automotive sector and power sector demands are motivating to production growth in several minerals like steel, aluminum, zinc and fuel minerals. Infrastructure buildup is seeing strong growth, not only on housing, but also on projects like roads, rail and airport luxury buildings, and other necessities. Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Goa, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan and Kerala are the major Indian producers of iron ore. Karnataka is the largest producer nearly one-fourth of the total produced in India. contact for seminars, Conferences, Workshop Training Program & Counsellings. Dongarpal is small village situated in the midst of dense forests in the Western Ghats of Savantwadi Taluka in Sindhudurg District of Mahrashtra State close to GOA border. The village is under threat of open cast iron ore mining which proposed by New India Mining Corporation Pvt. Ltd. In Dongarpal. Other companies Dempo and Tata Metalic also projected their mining in our village. The EIA report by the company claims that there are no perennial streams in the area, no forests and no agricultural lands, no school, no natural water resource in the mining lease area and that there will be no displacement due to the mining. The proposed mining area is on hill slopes adjoining these villages and boundary of the mining lease area continues right up to the edge of the village (directly abutting the houses). It will not be possible for the settlement to survive once the open cast iron ore mining starts. Here you can see the truth about our school, our farming areas, our cashu plantation, our natural water resource and our homes and Mandirs. These vedio was shooted in May month you can see the lovely green nature in summer. Can you imaging how a beautiful nature during rainy season? Dongarpal is beside to Phondaye goan, which is goverment forest area. Company was avoid to mention this forest in his report. If mining will start then this forest will afect badly. This mining will destroy near about more than 2 million plants and thousand of forest animals. The dongarpal villagers are against the mining. It is crucial to save the villages from displacement, the villagers from losing livelihood, the forests & its wildlife from being destroyed and most importantly the precious water resources from getting polluted. The irreversible damage can be avoided. The mining would only pollute the water resources and increase the risk of diseases and illnesses. Mining would result in the complete destruction of forests & its wildlife, water resources, plantations and agriculture and these villages. The damage due to deforestation, erosion and pollution would not only have local consequences but would also impact regional ecological systems such as rivers and downstream areas as this region forms an important water shed for the coastal belt of Sindhudurg. It will cause the large scale transformation of the landscape having severe environmental and social impacts All the world is under threat of global warming, in such condition how can we destroy this nature. Nobody Talks About Bauxite, But Here’s Why It’s Important

03:37
Bauxite is an ore that is refined into aluminum, and its demand is going to continue growing, said Simon Finnis, CEO of Metro Mining. “China has now developed a refining and smelting business without any bauxite, suddenly bauxite becomes a commodity,” Finnis told Kitco News on the sidelines of the Noosa Mining & Exploration Investment Conference. Finnis’s company, Metro Mining, is one of the world’s few pure-bauxite producing miners. _________________________________________________________________ Kitco News is the world’s #1 source of metals market information. Diamond_Mining_in_Sierra_Leone

04:39
The Growth Impacts of Diamond Mining in Sierra Leone As other countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, Sierra Leone is currently experiencing a “mining boom” that is will likely impact the country’s growth prospects in the near future, as major investments are made into the exploitation of recently found mineral fields (bauxite, iron ore). Unlike most countries on the continent, however, Sierra Leone has a long history of mining at the small-scale and artisanal level. Minerals, particularly diamonds, are in fact widely believed to have been one if not the main factor at the root of Sierra Leone’s decade-long civil war in the 1990s. In Sierra Leone, outside a few major companies that can bear the investment costs necessary for industrial mining, the majority of mining operations are “artisanal alluvial” – they are conducted in rivers and in swamps using rudimentary equipment. Due to the lack of employment opportunities in manufacturing and services, the bulk of the labour force in diamond areas faces a choice between getting involved in mining, farming, or both. In turn, the choice of communities to devote more or less resources on mining will impact conditions for agriculture. In addition, the mining activities could themselves have impacts on agricultural conditions. The proximity to rivers, which typically replenishes soil nutrients and enables irrigation, has ambiguous effects in a context where mining takes place in and around rivers. Because of the chemicals and other waste spilled in the rivers around the mining sites, the rivers fulfil less of their nutrient-replenishing functions. In addition, the techniques used for small-scale mining involve lifting off the top soil in areas surrounding rivers, which could accelerate soil erosion. As a result, farmers cultivating around mines may be directly negatively affected by mining activities. This project will enhance our understanding of the structure of small scale and artisanal diamond mining in Sierra Leone and its impact on the local economy. We will be looking at the overall effects of mining activities on rural livelihoods, involving such diverse aspects as income and wealth, food security, security and social conflict. Are mining communities better off than their non-mining neighbours? Is diamond mining a substitute for or a complement to farming? Within communities, how is labour allocated between mining and farming and how are mining revenues shared amongst mining and non-mining households? To answer these questions we will look at data provided by the Ministry of Mining and Mineral Resources as well as household-level agricultural data already collected as part of the Agricultural Households Tracking Survey (AHTS) in 2010 and a follow up survey conducted in 2011.

Spirited away - Mongolia's mining boom and the people that development left behind

05:06
In June 2011 four civil society organisations from across the globe -- CEE Bankwatch Network in eastern Europe, urgewald from Germany, Bank Information Center in the US and Oyu Tolgoi Watch from Mongolia -- traveled to Mongolia's south Gobi desert. The purpose of the visit was to better understand the environmental and social impacts of the development of the Tavan Tolgoi and Oyu Tolgoi mining projects in the Gobi. What they discovered was that the pressures from mining placed on the desert's scarce natural resources was driving the Gobi's traditional herder's to the edge of survival.
