Brian Frink Memory of Water
The McLean County Arts Center presentsMemory of Water,a solo exhibition of paintings by Brian Frink in the Brandt Gallery from September 11 to October 31, 2015. An Opening Reception will be on Friday, September 11 from 5 to 7 pm. The Art Talk by Brian Frink will take place on Saturday, September 19 at 2 pm. Both of these events are free and open to the public. A direct experience with water on Great Cranberry Island in Maine inspired the paintings in the exhibitionMemory of Water. Artist Brian Frink spent a month working in a studio by the Atlantic Ocean experiencing the movements of the sun, stars, fog, and water and invited them into his paintings. Initially he painted what he saw, but faced with his last piece of paper to work on, he turned his back to the view and painted what he had sensed throughout the previous days. Frink states,“By not looking at my subject I began to understand it. By focusing on my memory of water--previous experiences, conscious, sub-conscious, genetic, became part of the subject. MyMemory of Waterseries is a contemplation and consideration of the mysterious, defining, paradoxical relationship between memory and experience.” The resulting nonrepresentational paintings allude to elements of seascapes in their titles-Wave and Fog,Moonrise on Island Lake, Morning Constellation. The colors, shapes, and compositions of the paintings range in intensity from brilliant to subdued and their sizes expand from the intimate, framed sketchbook watercolor paper, to the immersive canvases of over 8 feet. Frink’s expertise with manipulating paint is apparent from the controlled color staining drips to the precise linear ripples of the brush. The depth of these layered paint transparencies creates sublime imagined scapes to traverse. The overall experience is a sensory pleasure boat ride and a celebration of the perfections and imperfections of nature, paint, and an artist’s memory. Brian Frink is a Distinguished Faculty Scholar and Chair of the Department of Art at Minnesota State University in Mankato. He earned is BFA from Illinois State University and his MFA from University of Wisconsin in Madison. Frink founded Rural America Contemporary Art (RACA), a group that advocates and fosters community among rural contemporary artists.

KnifeCenter Exclusive Hoback Kwaiback Only at KnifeCenter.com
When it comes to knives as an art form, Jake Hoback is one of our favorite custom makers, and the Kwaiback is his signature design. To get one of these exclusive knives, click this link: https://kcoti.com/ExclusiveHoback He really pulled out all the stops on this UHEP KnifeCenter Exclusive version. He was adamant that this Ultra High-End Production flipper would rival the quality of his full custom pieces, and he really nailed it! Pull this Kwaiback out of your pocket and people will know you mean business! The trailing tanto point creates quite an impression, and the anodized titanium frame looks fantastic. Look a little closer, and you will find a custom milled texture on the frame. Jake calls it “Bedform,” and you will only find it here at KnifeCenter. Inspired by the ripples and dunes of a riverbed, this texture flows around the features of the frame, adding a subtle grain that adds even more visual flair to an already striking design without creating any hotspots in the hand. All this style doesn’t come at the cost of usability. CTS-XHP stainless steel ensures this Kwaiback will still be cutting long after lesser knives have gone home crying! And thanks to Jake’s signature Hoback Roller Detent, you can flip this knife all day long with butter-smooth consistency. The frame lock’s engagement is inspiring too, and with a replaceable steel lockbar insert, you can be sure this Kwaiback is ready for a lifetime of service. This knife is built to take plenty of punishment, but it is still designed to be carried easily. The back is angled so it doesn’t catch your hand when reaching into your pocket, and the blade nestles completely into the frame when closed, with the only protrusion being the flipper tab. Really sleek! Even in your pocket, this knife makes a statement. You will surely get a wink and a nod from your knife friends when they see the finish-matching pocket clip with Jake’s signature “axe” punched out of the center. Everything about this knife - its materials, its performance, and fit and finish - feels like a Custom Hoback, and you will only get these anodized Bedform models at KnifeCenter.com "Rhythm of the Funk" by MC Cullah http://cullah.com/

This is a really fun project and when you first see the results, chances are your jaw will drop. The main thing to keep in mind for this project is that you need a camera that shoots 24 fps. The effect that you are seeing can't be seen with the naked eye. The effect only works through the camera. However, there is a version of the project you can do where the effect would be visible with the naked eye. For that project, you'd have to use a strobe light. For this project you'll need: A powered speaker Water source Soft rubber hose Tone generating software 24 fps camera Tape. Run the rubber hose down past the speaker so that the hose touches the speaker. Leave about 1 or 2 inches of the hose hanging past the bottom of the speaker. Secure the hose to the speaker with tape or whatever works best for you. The goal is to make sure the hose is touching the actual speaker so that when the speaker produces sound (vibrates) it will vibrate the hose. Set up your camera and switch it to 24 fps. The higher the shutter speed the better the results. But also keep in the mind that the higher your shutter speed, the more light you need. Run an audio cable from your computer to the speaker. Set your tone generating software to 24hz and hit play.Turn on the water. Now look through the camera and watch the magic begin. If you want the water to look like it's moving backward set the frequency to 23hz. If you want to look like it's moving forward in slow motion set it to 25hz. Have fun!

Magnetic Gallery Frames
KEN: Hi, I’m Kenneth Wingard from Home Made Simple. I’m going to show you how to make gallery frames that are magnetic. When you got a lot of kids, you got a lot of artwork coming in and out. You’ve got a lot of photos coming in and out. Do you like your stuff being displayed and on view? LEVI: Yeah. KEN: So, all we’re going to need here is standard shadow box gallery frames. I’ve taken off the backs. And then a sheet of galvanized metal. And this you can get at the craft store or hardware store. I think this was 7 or 8 dollars for the full sheet. Alright, why don’t you grab two of those smaller backs there. Trace that, give me a good trace on there. And then I’m going to snip this out here. And you can just get regular metal snippers. I’m actually using gloves only because the edges can get a little sharp. There we go! Yeah now you’re going to have a little bit of ripples on the end, but you can just bend those with our special gloves. So now we’re going to hold this in place with a little super glue. Very good. Pop it in place. Alright sir, which is the frame that you traced here. Was it this one? Ok...so then what we have is a totally metal back frame. And what you can do is pop up some photos. WOMAN: That’s really cute. KEN: And just use standard magnets. As photos come in, as the kids artwork comes in from school you can continually swap them out. We’ll take these other sizes and then we’ll hang them all on the wall in a different arrangement like this, depending upon the shape. WOMAN: Super cute! KEN: And all this was what? A dollar picture frame and an 8 dollar piece of metal is going to give us a whole gallery. WOMAN: I love it!

New fan frame & engine mounts test
First test after fitting new fail safe engine mounts and upgrading the thrust fan frame. Craft cruises at between 4000 & 4500 RPM. A little vibration evident at 5000 rpm and gradually increases as the revs rise. Vibration can be seen with the ripples in the water on the floor of the craft. There is approx. 20mm of water. Craft is sat on its trailer and has no lift engine running. The BMW R1100 engines are not the smoothest engine in the world. Knowing now what I know I would not fit another BMW engine in a hovercraft.

Painting a Woman in Water - Part 1 by Carmella Jarvi : Pastel Painting
http://www.cheapjoes.com -- Welcome to Artist Palette Productions at Cheap Joe's Art Stuff In this segment I'm going to walk you through one of my women swimming in water pastel paintings. This is a series I'm known the best for and I've been working on this for a number of years. I love water but I love the human figure as well and it's a lot of fun to do as well. I've started with my newsprint because you want to warm up. I've got my conte' and basically what I was trying to do was practice what my final image was going to look like. Normally, I would come in and do a little bit of my sketching with the color of the paper - that works really well - but for the sake of seeing it on the video, I wanted to just show a few of my color so it's marked in. You are seeing basically the way I start. I've shown you how to mount the gator foam on the board, how to pick the color of the paper using complimentary colors, how to start with my pastels over on the table so i'm ready to begin. The whole thing about these toothy pastel surfaces is that you're just starting to lay the pastel in and you're not going to get a lot of thick pastel in until you keep adding those layers on. At thi spoint I have the figure blocked in pretty well, I want to go ahead and not worry about details like eyelashes or anything like that. This figure is pretty small but she's big enough that I want to start suggesting the form. Wtih everything I do you get a little bit of distortion and you're never doing an exact copy of the photograph - it's just my impression. She is down in the water so I'm starting with her skin color. There's a little bit of her skin down here below the surface so I'm going suggest that. The whole thing about wateris that you can see into it, you can see the surface of it, the reflection of sky and trees or whatever is around, so with water there are multiple things you're looking at. Now I'm going to come in with my brights. This is a medium value color, so I'm going to come in with my lighter blue. I have the photo and I'm suggesting this interesting line here. The thing with water is you want to show the movement. Lay the color in with the side of the pastel. You want to change the position of your pastel as you're working. I'm going to go ahead and let this come around where there's a nice sweeping motion. It's important when you work with a large surface of water that you look for places where you see the ripples and concentric circles. Look for those things and when you suggest them your water will look more and more like water. If you have a tendency to go back and forth on auto-pilot, you may want to try to reduce the size of your paper or suface so you don't have as far to travel. Once you get your variety down with your marks you can go bigger. This is why I love these hand-made pastels because I can just come in and use them on the side. If I were using an extruded pastel, I would want to make sure I took the paper off, removed the coating from the outside, and then break it in half so I don't get a regular mark. Hand-rolled pastels have a wider center and smaller ends and that gives me a nice variety of marks. I don't want my marks to look too much the same because there's a huge area of water here, and if they're the same then it will be a very boring painting. Now I'm going to step back to get an overall impression of my painting. At this point I want to darken up her hair and some of the shadows and get this blocked in right. Forget eyelashes and all those little details, especially a figure in pastel. With just a few marks I was able to suggest that is the front of her face. If you love the figure you need to start studying anatomy and working from live models. Even though this is a photograph of a woman I work with live models a lot, and I study anatomy, and I have mirrors in my studio so that I understand the structure of the neck - especially muscle structure. Usually you can find a figure study or art group like that to help you along further. At this point she does look like a cro-magnon man and I'm not worried about that - it is a little hard on the ego at first when you start your pastel paintings, especially figures - but don't stress. Paint and draw what you see, NOT what you think you see. That is some of the best advice I've ever received. Make sure as you work that you paint all the way to the edge. This way when you frame it you won't have a halo effect. In order to show the depth of water, I have to layer in the colors. Even though I'm seeing a lot more of this lighter color in here I want to go ahead and use this blue so that it's more uniform. I don't want to outline her, but I do want this color to come up to the edge. At this point it's ok for me to overlap a little bit.

Paper Bill Ghost.wmv
A short film done by TCS guys at San Antonio.. This was shot as part of Kurukshetra annual competition with time limit of 4 minutes and theme on green revolution. Kamal is lazy to shift from paper bills to E-Bills and doesnt listen to friends advice. His friends wanted to make him realize importance of green revolution and shift to E-Bills. They make a ghost drama and scare him to opt for E-Bills. Trivia: 1. The cell phone light used for lighting will be visible in the 2:38 minute of the video. Something that was missed in editing. 2. The rope tieing and ghost carrying away Sridhar was shot in full reverse mode and the video was reversed using software. The previous frame will have the door closed and the next frame doors opens automatically. The opening of the door didnt turn up as expected and had to be edited. 3. When Kamal runs for his life saying he doesnt want to get into this trap, at 3:22, when he opens the door, the comforters in the other room will be visible. How did comforters come in to a new room?? 4. The camera wire will be visible in 3:25

Beginning a Watercolor Painting with Nancy Couick - Part 5 of 5
Featured Art Supplies in this Video: Nancy Couick paints on the Arches Watercolor Block, 140 lb. Cold Pressed, 9" x 12" which you find at Cheap Joe's Art Stuff: http://bit.ly/tra5CL. http://www.cheapjoes.com -- Welcome to Artist Palette Productions at Cheap Joe's Art Stuff Pulling the green on top of the red just darkens the red. That happens because they're complimentary colors. I'm going to grab a light pink and apply it to this light green leaf. When that dries it will look as though you're looking through that leaf. Backgrounds--optional. Just decide what you want to use. What would you see when you looked at this rose bud? You'd probably be close to the ground looking up, maybe the sky, just go for what makes sense. I'm going to put just a touch of blue in this background - not necessarily to have a blue sky, but to enhance this flower. We talked earlier about paint traveling to the edge of the moisture and not going any further. If I were to put water on here and add that paint and leave it here, I'd end up with a halo around the flower. I'm painting this whole piece of paper with water because I know this gradual transition from dark to light may not show at first and not until I put this away and come back and get ready to frame it. I'm propping this up on the masking tape to avoid having this water collect. Sometimes if it's flat it causes ripples in your paper if it pools. I'm going to take some cobalt blue and just touch it around the flower. I'm not doing this in order to have a blue background but merely to enhance this flower. I don't want you to actually notice the blue when all is said and done. This wasn't totally dry and is starting to run a little bit so I'm going to lift that color and push it back into that area. Then there's a good chance you'll never notice. Red on the other hand will run! Try to keep your reds almost to the end. So here I'm just trying to diffuse it--out and away. It's amazing how it makes this flower pop. Sometimes very subtle changes can make all the difference.

See invisible gases using your phone, water and some glass or plastic (DIY Ripple Tank)
I used this glass picture frame and my phone light to project waves up onto the ceiling which just looked helluva awesome. I also found that this allows you to clearly see the normally invisible butane gas spraying out of a lighter before you click to light it up. Class! If you're trying this, make sure there's a big gap between phone and water to get the image to be crisp and in focus. Mmm Crisps. You can use a Tupperware lunch box to do this too. This would be very impressive at a party with some music. I wonder what would happen if you put food colouring and washing up liquid in there too.....
