Should You Buy Mining Stocks, or the Metal Itself?

10:26
Which is Best? The Metals or the Miners? Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/user/PeterLeedsPennyStock Both the physical metals themselves, AND the mining companies, will benefit from changes to the price of the commodity. Whether talking about gold, pork bellies, silver, palladium, platinum, or any commodity (from coffee to cotton), there are a few very important considerations. In general, the prices of the penny stock mining companies will increase or decrease by a larger percentage amount than the actual metal itself. This is because of the profit margin increase. If gold (for example) rises 10%, then since the extraction costs are set, the boost to profit margins could be extreme... such as 200%. Thus, the 10% surge in the price of the metal actually translates into a significant gain to the penny stock's profits. However, one issue that all businesses have, which the commodities do not face, would be company-specific risks. Commodities do not embezzle money, or make bad business deals, or get sued, or have to deal with employee deaths, etc... Even better than gold are gold miners as the risk is lower because you need to own less of them than physical gold to have the same hedging effect. I discuss the 10 largest gold mining stocks and will discuss all of the holdings of the Van Eck gold miners ETF (GDX) to give you an overview of what there is so that you can find the best option for your portfolio.

Go For the Gold ETF Not the Miners

05:02
The price of gold may be flying so far in 2016, but the yellow metal is still trailing the miners plucking it from the ground. Steven Dunn, executive director at ETF Securities, said investors should not abandon the physical metal to jump on the miner bandwagon so quickly. 'There’s a lot of leverage and debt in the miner space,' said Dunn. 'If you are looking at it from a risk parity type of trade of the metal versus the miners there is a lot more risk associated with the miners currently.' Gold, as tracked by the ETFS Physical Swiss Gold ETF (SGOL), is up 17% year-to-date. The Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (GDX), which holds mining giants like Barrick Gold (ABX), Goldcorp (GG) and Newmont Mining (NEM), is up 41% since the start of 2016. As for the factors driving gold higher, Dunn said it starts with the volatility investors have been feeling in the equity market. Greed Is Good, At Least For The Gold Mining Sector

03:54
A lack of investor sentiment in the gold space can be remedied with more greedy speculators, said Derek Macpherson, VP of Mining Analysis, Red Cloud Klondike Strike Inc.  "Greed comes from big share price performance, when you have exploration holes, and when stocks get taken out, and that's what gets people excited about junior mining," Macpherson told Kitco News on the sidelines of the Precious Metals Summit in Beaver Creek.  "People don't invest in junior mining to make 100% of their money, they do it for the opportunity to make 1000%," he added.  __ Kitco News is the world’s #1 source of metals market information. 78 Year Low in Mining Stocks by Some Measurements | Fund Manager

18:52
https://sdbullion.com http://www.silverdoctors.com/precious-metals-market-podcast/ A "flight to safety" mindset will take over the market, Fund manager David Kranzler says. He sees the stock market selling off further, pushing money into precious metals. As for the mining sector, many minings stocks are undervalued more than they have been in the last 78 years, Kranzler says. Trump may end up appointing 6 of the 7 Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve. Does this count as politicization of the Fed? The Fed has been politicized for a long time, Kranzler argues.

The Truth About Silver & Gold Mining Stocks - Mike Maloney

16:49
Mining stocks can be good investments, but you introduce risks that don't exist if you invest in physical gold and silver. I personally did quite well with miners in the early 2000's, but in hindsight a lot of it was simply due to luck. Stay away from the pump & dumpers, and any businesses that associate with them. Watch this week's video to get my current take on gold & silver stocks and the overall economy. If you enjoyed watching this video, be sure to check out the Hidden Secrets of Money website at https://www.hiddensecretsofmoney.com/. It’s a world-leading educational series by Mike Maloney, the bestselling author of the Guide to Investing in Gold & Silver. As Mike explains in the series and his book, we live in an economic system that is made complicated by design. Basically, it’s set up so most people don’t even try to understand it. In Mike’s videos, he breaks down these concepts using easy-to-follow analogies, real pages from history, and animations that tie it all together. And be sure to follow Mike on social media to stay up to date on his latest news and posts: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/OfficialMikeMaloney/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/mike_maloney Mike Maloney is also the founder of GoldSilver.com (http://tinyurl.com/jlypdzc), which was one of the first websites ever to sell bullion online. Why Gold (and Precious Metals) Prices are About to Climb Fast

13:49
Here is why gold and all precious metals prices (platinum, silver, palladium) are about to spike to higher levels. Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/user/PeterLeedsPennyStock Between the global demand trends, with Central Banks (like in China and Russia) buying up gold by the ton, and the softening of the U. S. dollar, we expect bullion to cost significantly more in 2017, and even going into 2018. Gold is a hedge against global chaos, stock market meltdowns, and other risky situations. Meanwhile, precious metals are also a way to preserve wealth over time. Since 1930, the American dollar has lost nearly 98% of it's purchasing power. With so much irresponsible money generation worldwide, hard assets like physical gold will only increase in demand. We use several of the gold and silver mining penny stock picks we have made for subscribers of PeterLeeds.com and Peter Leeds Penny Stocks to explain trading in sympathy, and the divergence in gold prices between various currencies.

CEO Explains Why this Gold ETF Doesn’t Have the Traditional Market Cap Weighting

06:31
There are two types of gold ETFs: those that invest in physical gold and those that invest in gold stocks. The new U.S. Global GO GOLD and Precious Metal Miners ETF (GOAU), launched June 28, falls in the latter category. Please consider carefully a fund’s investment objectives, risks, charges and expenses. For this and other important information, obtain a statutory and summary prospectus here: http://www.usglobaletfs.com/investor-materials/ or call 844.ETF.JETS (844.383.5387). Read it carefully before investing. Investing involves risk, including the possible loss of principal. Shares of any ETF are bought and sold at market price (not NAV), may trade at a discount or premium to NAV and are not individually redeemed from the funds. Brokerage commissions will reduce returns. Because the funds concentrate their investments in specific industries, the funds may be subject to greater risks and fluctuations than a portfolio representing a broader range of industries. The funds are non-diversified, meaning they may concentrate more of their assets in a smaller number of issuers than diversified funds. The funds invest in foreign securities which involve greater volatility and political, economic and currency risks and differences in accounting methods. These risks are greater for investments in emerging markets. The funds may invest in the securities of smaller-capitalization companies, which may be more volatile than funds that invest in larger, more established companies. The performance of the funds may diverge from that of the index. Because the funds may employ a representative sampling strategy and may also invest in securities that are not included in the index, the funds may experience tracking error to a greater extent than funds that seek to replicate an index. The funds are not actively managed and may be affected by a general decline in market segments related to the index. Airline Companies may be adversely affected by a downturn in economic conditions that can result in decreased demand for air travel and may also be significantly affected by changes in fuel prices, labor relations and insurance costs. Gold, precious metals, and precious minerals funds may be susceptible to adverse economic, political or regulatory developments due to concentrating in a single theme. The prices of gold, precious metals, and precious minerals are subject to substantial price fluctuations over short periods of time and may be affected by unpredicted international monetary and political policies. We suggest investing no more than 5% to 10% of your portfolio in these sectors. Distributed by Quasar Distributors, LLC. U.S. Global Investors is the investment adviser to JETS and GOAU.
Kevin O’Leary: Stay Away From Gold Miners, Hold Bullion

02:21
Investors are better off holding physical gold rather than mining stocks, according to Shark Tank star and chairman of O’Shares ETFs, Kevin O’Leary. O’Leary said gold miners have had a track record of bad management and poor cost control that have led to underperformance relative to physical gold. The Shark Tank investor himself maintains 5% of his portfolio in physical gold, using a combination of bullion and SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE: GLD), the world’s largest gold-backed exchange-traded fund. “The history of mining has been abysmal,” O’Leary told Kitco News on the sidelines of the “Three Sharks In A Castle” symposium. “The value of the commodity is whatever it is every day. I don’t need to have a manager in the middle screwing up his capital cost allowance, not controlling his costs.” _________________________________________________________________ Kitco News is the world’s #1 source of metals market information. How to Invest in Gold

06:12
When people talk about investing in precious metals, the first one that springs to mind is Gold. Gold’s qualities make it one of the most coveted metals in the world. Not only it is nice to look at, but it can be shaped and sculpted into pretty much anything you can think of, hence its extensive use in jewellery. It’s also a highly effective conductor of both heat and electricity and these characteristics have made it the metal of choice for the tiny relay contacts and connectors in mobile phones and computer circuit boards. Yes that’s right, you probably own a tiny amount of gold already but before you get too excited, each mobile phone contains just fifty milligrams of the precious metal. That’s one five hundredth of a gram of gold so don’t go handing in your notice and reaching for the sombrero just yet. But it’s not just it’s characteristics that make gold a highly prized commodity. Its rarity is the real key to its value. Even with today’s modern technology, gold is incredibly difficult to find. In total just one hundred and sixty thousand tonnes of gold are in circulation across the world right now. That might sound a lot, but compare that figure to the coal reserves in the US alone, which stand at two hundred and fifty-five BILLION tonnes and you start to get an understanding of just how rare gold is. Don’t forget as well, gold is much denser than most other materials and that means it’s very heavy. Formed into a single cube, the total amount of gold in the world wouldn’t even cover a tennis court and new gold is only being mined at a rate of two thousand six hundred tonnes a year. That’s about enough to fill a pokey one bedroomed apartment here in London. These facts mean that gold is a popular commodity to hold and for many savvy investors, it will make up between ten and fifteen percent of their investment portfolio. When outside pressures such as political instability, war, or high inflation affect the stock markets, it’s gold that investors turn to as a safe haven. That means, when many stocks are on the downward slide, gold will come rising to the top. Gold acts as a kind of an insurance in your investment portfolio. So ‘what’s the best way to invest in gold’ you’re probably asking? Well, there are three distinct methods. The first is to buy physical gold. Websites like bullionvault.com offer easy access to the markets. The gold will be registered in your name and they offer low cost, secure storage outside of the UK in places like Singapore and Zurich. Gold bullion can be purchased in coins or bars or ingots and is typically ninety nine point nine percent proof. The advantage of gold coins over gold bars is that they allow you to be more flexible. After all, it’s easier to sell twenty per cent of your gold if you own ten gold coins rather than if your whole investment is in one gold bar. For the same reason, you’ll probably find that coins are that bit more easy to sell. The second way to invest in gold is through Exchange Traded Funds or ETFs. With ETFs you never actually own the gold yourself. It’s owned by the provider of the ETF. Instead you become a beneficiary of the debt owed by the ETF and that debt is backed by gold. In short, it’s a gold plated I.O.U. Your investment allows the fund to buy more gold and when you want your money back in the future, the amount you get back will depend on the value of the gold at the time of your request. ETFs provide a cheap and convenient way to invest in gold. There’s a lower entry point and you don’t have to worry about where you’re going to store your gold or how much that’s going to cost. The downside for me in this scenario, is you can never really be sure that the ETF in question has actually bought the physical gold to back up its debt and that invites an extra level of risk into the equation. If there’s a sudden panic in the market, will they have enough gold to cover their commitments? If you don’t want the hassles of owning physical gold and you’re not keen on gold plated I.O.U notes, another way to invest in gold is through the mining companies themselves. Barrick Gold, Newmont Mining and Goldcorp are some of the many Gold Miners that are available to invest in through the stock markets. Shares of precious metal miners are typically leveraged to price movements in the precious metal they mine and they’re a good way of getting many times the increase in the spot price of gold. But shares in gold miners have been highly volatile recently and their price has been hammered in recent years. The upside of that though, is with mining stocks now sitting at long-term lows, as Yazz and her plastic population once said, the only way is up. Like all investments the price of gold can and does go down as well as up so it’s hugely important that any investment is part of a well diversified portfolio. But if you’re relying on paper money issued by bankrupt government as a store of value for your wealth, be very careful out there.

When to Buy Etfs OVER Stocks (6 Times When Investing In Etfs Is Better Than Picking Stocks)

09:45
When To Purchase Etfs vs Stocks. When to Buy ETFS vs Stocks (6 Times When Investing In Etfs Is Better Than Picking Stocks) By the end of this video you will have much better idea of when invest in etfs (Exchange traded funds) versus selecting individual stocks. Let’s begin 1. When the sector has a narrow dispersion of returns. Sectors that have a narrow dispersion of returns from the mean do not offer stock pickers an advantage when trying to generate market-beating returns. For example lets assume there are 100 companies in the utility sector and most of them provide an annual rate of return of 4%, because the performance of all companies in these sectors tends to be similar. This is usually true for consumer staple investments as well. Its kind of like trying to choose which McDonalds to go to. No matter which one you choose the hamburger is basically going to taste the same. Since the dispersion of returns from these kind of investments tends to be narrow or similar; picking individual stock does not offer sufficiently higher return for the risk so purchasing a utility etf or index fund might make the most sense in this example. . 2. When you want to invest in a particular market sector or industry, but you have limited knowledge of that sector or industry For example, if you believe that now is a good time to invest in the mining sector, you may want to gain specific industry exposure. However, you are concerned that some stocks might encounter political problems harming their production. In this case, it is prudent to buy into the sector rather than a specific stock, since it reduces your risk. You can still benefit from growth in the overall sector, especially if it outperforms the overall market. 3. When the performance drivers of a company are difficult to understand. These companies may possess complicated technology or processes that cause them to underperform or do well. Perhaps performance depends on the successful development and sale of a new unproven technology. You find it difficult to understand the company or industry. Chipper told me a pharmaceutical company was going to do well, but I don’t understand how they operate, and there are so many of them to choose from. Which one do I pick? Unlike in the first example where the dispersion of investment returns were narrow, the desperation of returns in this case are wide so may even more challenging to pick the winning stocks in the industry. The biotechnology industry is a good example, as many of these companies depend on the successful development and sale of a new drug. If the development of the new drug does not meet expectations in the series of trials, or the FDA does not approve the drug application, the company faces a bleak future. On the other hand, if the FDA approves the drug, investors in the company can be highly rewarded. 4. When you want instant diversification ETFs provide instant diversification relative to individual stocks. It would be challenging to have a properly diversified portfolio with 10 individual stocks, but relatively simple with the same number of ETFs. (To learn more, see 10 Ways ETFs Can Grow Your Portfolio.) 5. Invest In Hard-to-access Markets Owning gold is a pain for most individual investors; owning SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE:GLD) (which owns gold bullion) is simple. Not only does this ETF bypass the bid-ask spreads of retail gold and the expense of rolling over futures contracts, but it has no storage or security requirements. Likewise, investors can access commodities like copper, precious metals, timberland and so on through the convenient forms of ETFs. (For more, check out Commodities: The Portfolio Hedge.) 6. Less time consuming way to invest The iShares US Medical Devices ETF (NYSE:IHI) contains 40 different stocks. It would take weeks for an individual investor to do proper due diligence on each of those names, and that is one of the advantages of ETF investing. Why should I spend all my time trying to sit here and pick individual stocks? I need to get my sorceress in Diablo 2 to level 99! Because the impact and importance of any one stock is relatively small, investors can spend their time thinking about which sectors and markets are poised to perform and make investment choices without being bogged down by an overwhelming amount of initial and ongoing due diligence. Shares of the Silver Trust are not subject to the same regulatory requirements as mutual funds. These investments are not suitable for all investors. Trusts focusing on a single commodity generally experience greater volatility. There are special risks associated with short selling and margin investing. Please ask your financial advisor for more information about these risks. The value of the Shares relates directly to the value of the silver held by the Trust and fluctuations in the price of silver could materially adversely affect an investment in the Shares. Several factors may affect the price of silver including: (1) A change in economic conditions, such as a recession, can adversely affect the price of silver. Silver is used in a wide range of industrial applications, and an economic downturn could have a negative impact on its demand and, consequently, its price and the price of the Shares; (2) Investors’ expectations with respect to the rate of inflation; (3) Currency exchange rates; (4) Interest rates; (5) Investment and trading activities of hedge funds and commodity funds; and (6) Global or regional political, economic or financial events and situations. Should there be an increase in the level of hedge activity of silver producing companies, it could cause a decline in world silver price, adversely affecting the price of the Shares. Commodities and futures generally are volatile and are not suitable for all investors. Shares in the Trust are not FDIC insured and may lose value and have no bank guarantee. Investors buy and sell shares on a secondary market (i.e., not directly from trust). Dave Kranzler | Using Leverage in Precious Metals & Mining Stock Investing

35:50
Returning guest Dave Kranzler of Investment Research Dynamics returns to the program to discuss the use of leverage when investing in precious metals and mining stocks. Dave co-manages a precious metals and junior mining stock fund and is the editor of the Mining Stock Journal and Short Seller’s Journal. Leverage, as any savvy business owner or investors knows, can dramatically increase the growth rate of one’s wealth when things go in your favor. But when you use leverage to invest and things don’t go in your favor, your wealth can begin to evaporate quickly. If the use of leverage goes wrong for the investor it is even possible that you lose all of your invested capital AND more leaving you with a debt to pay off. Many people are attracted to mining stocks because of the built-in leverage they offer relative to the price of the underlying commodity that a mining company mines. Not only are the mining stocks essentially a leveraged instrument, but there are derivative financial products available to the investor that even further increases the leverage already built into a mining stock. In this interview, Dave Kranzler discusses with Bill Powers how to deal with the emotions of greed and fear when investing in mining stocks and also ways in which the investor might utilize the various leveraged financial instruments of margin accounts, put and call options, JNUG and DUST (3x daily ETF’s) and gold and silver futures contracts. 0:05 Introduction of Topic and Guest 1:07 Dealing with the emotions of greed and fear when investing 12:23 Using margin to invest in mining stocks 15:25 Discussing the probability of successful trading 18:11 Using put & call options on mining stocks 24:22 How to play JNUG & DUST (3x daily ETF’s) 29:43 Discussing Gold & Silver Futures Contracts 32:45 Dave’s concluding thoughts regarding leverage Sign up for our free newsletter and receive interview transcripts, stock profiles and investment ideas: http://eepurl.com/cHxJ39 The content found on MiningStockEducation.com is for informational purposes only and is not to be considered personal legal or investment advice or a recommendation to buy or sell securities or any other product. Shark Tank’s Kevin O’Leary Says Forget the Miners, Own the Gold (Part 1/3)

02:22
If you want to invest in gold, why bother investing in the miners? This is the creed of Shark Tank’s Kevin O’Leary and the chairman of O’Shares ETF Investments. Speaking with Kitco News in New York, the investor said that when it comes to the hard asset he prefers to hold the physical metal over the miners. “Why would I put idiot management between the value of the commodity and my ability to own it?” he said. “I don’t need to own miners…why do I want management screwing up the extraction of the commodity? I have no interest in that,” he added. O’Leary, who is pitched business ideas as the star of ABC’s Shark Tank, said that mining companies are often brought to his attention, but he prefers to ignore them. And even though he prefers the physical metal, he still keeps it weighted at 5%. “It is a stabilizer in anyone’s portfolio. I like it, but I don’t want to own more than 5%.” Don’t forget to sign up for Kitco News’ Weekly Roundup – comes out every Friday to recap the hottest stories & videos of the week: https://connect.kitco.com/subscription/newsletter.html Join the conversation @ The Kitco Forums and be part of the premier online community for precious metals investors: https://gold-forum.kitco.com/ -- Or join the conversation on social media: @KitcoNewsNOW on Twitter: https://twitter.com/kitconewsnow --- Kitco News on Facebook: http://facebook.com/kitconews --- Kitco News on Google+: http://google.com/+kitco --- Kitco News on StockTwits: http://stocktwits.com/kitconews
