A silent newsreel item from 1957 about mechanised coal mining procedures at the Awaba State Coal Mine, near Newcastle in New South Wales. The item opens with shots of miners going down into, and later leaving, the mine. We see older footage of miners underground using picks and shovels to break up the coal and load it onto carts. A pit pony takes the coal away. The newsreel contrasts this with the modern methods of cutting coal from the coalface using a machine. Two miners bore a hole in the coalface and set explosives. Coal is loaded into a truck using a mechanical loader and taken to storage bins by a locomotive. A conveyor belt takes the coal from the mine to the Crusher Shed where it is transported away by truck. Coal Mining the Modern Way, Newcastle, NSW, 1957. NFSA title: 128513

Gold is now primarily found in very low concentrations. Open pit mines, like the one shown in this video, process tons of rock in order to extract just a few ounces. This process is extremely damaging to the environment. Dacian Gold has awarded Macmahon contractors a $250 million mining services for their Western Australian Mt Morgan gold mine. This is the final contract Dacian Gold needed to award before launching production in March 2018. Dacian Plans to begin open pit mining at Mt Morgans this month. The mining services contract awarded to Macmahon will last for five years and will see Macmahon provide drilling and blasting, loading, hauling and technical services. It is expected that Macmahon will move more than 100 million tonnes of material over the course of the contract, at the conclusion of which there will be an option to extend the contract by a further 31 months. Last week Macmahon also confirmed they had secured a $350 million contract at Queensland’s Byerwen coal project. Macmahon Chief Executive Michael Finnegan spoke about the opportunity to work on the Mt Morgans project, “To receive this letter is extremely gratifying and we look forward to delivering this project for the benefit of both parties.” “Throughout the tender process we have built a trusted relationship with Dacian Gold, and today’s announcement is a testament of the value-driven proposition that Macmahon has been able to offer.” Dacian chairman Rohan Williams also spoke about the project, “Project construction is progressing rapidly, with the carbon-in-leach (CIL) treatment plant now over 75 per cent complete, underground mining 743 metres ahead of schedule and eight drilling rigs operating around the site.” “And now we have secured Macmahon as the open pit mining contractor, with mining at Heffernans to start this month. “With a production rate of 200,000 ounces a year, Mt Morgans will be the biggest gold mine to come on line in Australia for six years.”

After Montana voters banned new cyanide mining in 1998, and voted down a repeal of the ban in 2005, industry lobbyists and legislators are AGAIN ignoring the wishes of Montana voters. SB 306 will allow new open pit mines to truck low grade ore to existing cyanide processing facilities. Please contact Governor Brian Schweitzer at (406) 444-3111 and request that he veto SB 306.

UPDATE (june 20, 2012): Cline Mining Corporation is suing the BC Government (BC taxpayers) for 500 million dollars for the lost revenue they claim was incurred by being expropriated from the BC Flathead. http://www.clinemining.com/ Project stopped: see Bill 2 This 3D video was created to show the downstream geography from the proposed Lodgepole Open Pit Coal Mine near Fernie, British Columbia, CANADA. Glacier National Park, Montana, USA is immediately downstream from this proposed use of an uninhabited, and unspoiled valley. This video provides its audience with a spatial reference for the state, provincial, federal, and international land use designations that have protected the ecological integrity of the transboundary flathead watershed for the past 100 years. The map intends to emphasize how this watershed, with its world class fisheries, is currently under threat from a proposed open pit coal mine located in the British Columbian headwaters of the North Fork of the Flathead River. In the United States, the North Fork of the Flathead River forms the western boundary for the Glacier National Park part of Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, and has federal designation as a "Wild and Scenic River". This proposed open pit coal mine will operate in the headwaters of this wild and scenic river, an area said to contain the highest concentration of non-coastal grizzly bears in North America, on a 24/7 basis for 20 years. The Lodgepole Coal Mine, as it will be known, will be run by Cline Mining Corporation of Sudbury, Ontario. Coal produced at this mine will then be sold on the international market.

People from across the country are converging in Helena, the capital of Montana, for a week of activity aimed at stopping the "best last place" from becoming the new "coal ground zero." Coal industry giants are pushing members of the Montana State Land Board to let them build the Otter Creek mine, the "anchor project" in a larger industry scheme to transform southeast Montana and northeast Wyoming into a coal mining industrial zone. King Coal has used money to influence governments for decades, squashing labor unions, rural communities, and environmental health. Now environmentalists, ranchers, frontline communities, and students are standing up to fight back. Come join in for a week of non-violent action to stop King Coal. Events as planned are: Monday, August 13th - Opening Day: The Real Action Begins! Tuesday, August 14th - Occupy Day: Coal and Corporations Wednesday, August 15th - Rail Impacts Day: How Coal Trains Threaten Our Communities Thursday, August 16th - Climate Change Day -- Coal and the Global Climate Friday, August 17th - Regional Impacts Day: Coal Exports in the Northwest Saturday, August 18th - High School Students Day Sunday, August 19th - Alternatives to Coal: Embracing a Clean Energy Future Monday, August 20th - Citizens' Land Board Meeting For more info check out: http://www.coalexportaction.org

The Mount Mulligan mine disaster occurred on 19 September 1921 in Mount Mulligan, North Queensland. A series of explosions in the local coal mine, audible as much as 30 km away, rocked the close knit township. Seventy-five workers were killed by the disaster which is the third worst coal mining accident in Australia in terms of human lives lost. Four of the dead had been at the mouth of the pit at the time of the explosion. Only eleven of the bodies were found. The disaster affected people in cities and towns all over the country. The mine, which was new at the time of the accident, was widely considered safe and had no previous indications of gas leaks. The miners hence worked using open flame lights instead of safety lamps.

This is a cast blast that had 12' angled drill holes at an average of 165'. They were double primed with NONEL shock tube and Primacord for surface lines. There were 5 rows with (if i remember correctly) 30' burden and 20' spacing. The ANFO was bagged to the best of our ability in the field due to the amount of time and sometimes unpredictable weather in Wyoming. Rate it if you like it!!!!

A photo compilation of the historic Bessie & Flat Top Coal Mines which were located in West Jefferson County, Alabama. Both coal mines were originally owned by the Sloss Sheffield Steel & Iron Company. Both mines were originally open around 1905 with the completion of the L&N Railroad Cane Creek Branch operated by Birmingham Mineral Railroad. Southern Railways also completed an extension via another route through what was called 'Bessie Junction' just to the west of the Bessie Coal Mine. The Mary Lee Industrial Railroad also serviced the Flat Top & Bessie Mines. Both coal mines were very deep and massive underground mining operations that went over 2000 feet in depth and stretched for miles underground. Both mines were eventually operated by U. S. Pipe & Foundry when they purchased Sloss Sheffield in the 1940's. Around 1955 both mines were eventually closed. Entire communities were built around these mines with their own schools, company commissaries , churches and doctors offices. Years later the mine sites were sold to Jim Walters Corporation. Today nothing remains of the mine sites with the exception of some abandoned railroad trestles and the old Flat Top Tunnel. Both mine sites remains reside on private property and no trespassing policy is strictly enforced.
