Visit To Calico Ghost Town: Popular Authentic Restored Silver Mining Town

16:41
http://www.hollywoodhaunter.com/ This is a real abandoned mining ghost town fixed up by Walter Knott. Join us for a fun birthday shenanigans at the Knott's Berry Farm sponsored Calico Old Mining Ghost Town in Yermo California located 13 miles east of Barstow in the Mojave Desert in the Calico Mountains. This popular tourist attraction that is a multi colored rocky mountain area produced one of the richest silver strikes in California history back in the 1800s. Back then the population rose to 1,200 people. After three hours of plundering the towns many saloons we paid a quick visit to the Rainbow Basin a natural area that has multi-colored rock formations. I wanted to spend the day doing something different with the birthday girl so I surprised her with this low key relaxing trip out to the desert. We even picked up a few inspirations for our Halloween home haunt decorated yard this year which happens to be an old abandoned western ghost town. We comment along the way as we explore and travel through the town and make prop, haunter, and Halloween references. You will see us explore old buildings, shops, abandoned silver mine called Maggie Shaft, Glory Holes, gold panning, see antique tools and equipment, mystery shacks that make us wheezy and gun slinging fights in the streets. The trip gave us several ideas for building all our Halloween ghost town facades. We didn't stay for the stunning Mojave sunset. Thanks for watching and joining us on this little adventure. Calico Ghost Town - Mojave Desert

03:25
California travel expert Veronica Hill shares a guide to Calico Ghost Town in this episode of "California Travel Tips." Located in the dusty Mojave Desert — roughly 10 miles north of Barstow — Calico was named for the rainbow-colored hills that produced one of the richest silver strikes in California history. Home to 1,200 residents by 1887, this was a wild and woolly place — with 22 saloons, its own red light district and several fine restaurants. Today, Calico has five surviving original buildings: the Park Office, Lane's General Store, Lil's Saloon, and The Zenda Mining Company. Plan on a full day to explore. You can do a bit of gold panning; walk sideways in the Mystery Shack; take a ride on the Calico & Odessa Narrow Gauge Railway; or explore more than 1,000 feet of tunnel inside the Maggie Mine Shaft. Around lunch, grab a cold beer and burger at Old Miner's Cafe, or enjoy an old-fashioned sarsparilla at the Calico House Restaurant. Then, hike off your meal on the East Calico Hiking Trail, where you'll find unique cabins carved into the rocky hillsides. Calico produced more than $20 million in silver, and was deserted by the 1930s. Walter Knott (of Knott's Berry Farm fame) purchased the crumbling town in 1951 for $13,500, restoring it to its former glory. It is now run by the park service. Tips: Calico takes credit cards and there are several ATMs on site. You can stay the night in Calico's campgrounds or bunkhouse. The ghost town is located off I-15 en route to Las Vegas. Calico Ghost Town

SUBSCRIBE! http://tinyurl.com/p2fveuj California travel expert Veronica Hill of http://www.CaliforniaTravelExpert.com tours Calico Ghost Town in this episode of "California Travel Tips." Many of these abandoned mining communities, which thrived during the late 1800s, are now popular tourist attractions. Located 10 miles north of Barstow, Calico Ghost Town in Yermo was named for the rainbow-colored hills that produced one of the richest silver strikes in California history. This was a wild and wooly place with 22 saloons, its own red light district and several fine restaurants. The Calico Hotel, run by Mrs. E.L. Hazen, promised a generous welcome, first-class meals, and reasonable rates. (The original hotel is no longer standing) By 1887, there were 1,200 people living in Calico. Children of local merchants and miners attended the one-room Calico School, which sometimes doubled for church service on Sundays. Back in 1885, school teachers made about $80-$100 a month and children played games like marbles, ball and bean bag toss. Plan on a full day to explore this historic ghost town. You can relax on a rocking chair, play a game of checkers on the porch, or enjoy some good-old fashioned gold panning. Around lunchtime, grab a cool Sarsparilla and lunch plate at the Calico House Restaurant, then tour the bath house, where you'll find antique tubs, a laundry press and old west kitchen. The Blacksmith shop is home to several antique tools and equipment. Along the East Calico Hiking Trail, you'll find unique cabins carved into the rocky hillsides. Lumber was scarce, so hard rock miners were creative, sometimes even using bottles as building materials. On the Calico & Odessa narrow gauge railway, we learned that Calico had 10 major mines and more than 30 miles of underground passages. Today, the only mine safe enough to enter is the Maggie Shaft. Here, you can explore 1,000 feet of tunnel, check out the Glory Hole, and view the former sleeping dugout of miner John Mulcahy. Calico began its life in 1881 and produced more than $20 million in silver. One of Calico's most profitable mines was the Silver King. An additional $9 million in borax was harvested from Calico's Mule Canyon, where the company town of Borate was established. (This was the last place in California where Twenty Mule teams were used). Calico was deserted by the 1930s, when mining was no longer profitable. Walter Knott purchased the crumbling town in 1951 for $13,500, restoring it to its former glory. Today, Calico has five surviving original buildings. They include the Park Office, Lane's General Store, and Lil's Saloon. (Has an ATM). The Zenda Mining Company building is now home to a fortune teller. To learn more about Calico Ghost Town history, visit the Lucy Lane Home, built in 1887. This was once Calico's Post Office, Courthouse and in 1920, the private home of Lucy and John Lane. Today, it's a museum where you can view historic photos and some of the Lane's old belongings, including an antique dresser, an iceless cooler from 1918, and a miner's carbide lamp. Despite its rustic appearance, Calico takes credit cards and there are several ATMs on site. You can even go camping for the night at Calico's campgrounds or bunkhouse. And Calico is pet friendly! Be sure to stay until dusk, when the park closes. You can grab a cold beer and burger at Calico's Old Miner's Cafe, then watch the stunning Mojave sunset. It's a magical way to end a day in the California desert. http://www.hollywoodhaunter.com/ How to make an old western hoedown stage or raised deck that sits in the center of an old abandondoned mining ghost town. We are building an entire area from the old wild west. In this video you will see how we built this small boot stomping western stage or raised deck for an old western abandoned mining town for kids. Watch clips from the western hoedown stage build followed by a short picture slide show. We share some of the materials used and needed to build and brace the above ground platform. We wanted to design a performing area that looked like it was straight out of town square from the old west also used for the hanging of wanted criminals after they had been tried. We hope you enjoy this fun video as we construct another portion of the old abandoned western mining town. Some of our skeleton friends from our Halloween home haunt got so excited they thought they would have a hoedown the day we finished and teach us some of their moves. HeeHaw! Calico Ghost Town & Mines Gould Eng.

The town of Calico was formed after the Gold Rush stsrted near the town of Dagget CA above Barstow. The town was later bought by Mr. Knott who moved many of the buildings to Anaheim CA where it became the Calico Ghost town, you could buy bussen berries or enjoy a steak dinner or a chicken dinner. It remained this way for.many years in fact we used to watch the Smothers Bros perform in the Covered Wagens, who would have thought they would have their own T. V. show some. They eventually fenced in the park. The mines we explored were located in odesa Canyon. We spent over 4 years exploring them. I have written three books book one having the calico article, the books titles are Gold Miner 49 er one two & three can be obtained at www.lulu.com.

Restored in 1951 by Walter Knott (Knott's Berry Farm), now a tourist attraction with campgrounds. There's a little something for everybody here. Calico an Old West Mining Town ( Ghost Town )

07:16
Calico is an old West mining town that has been around since 1881 during the largest silver strike in California. With its 500 mines, Calico produced over $20 million in silver ore over a 12-year span. When silver lost its value in the mid-1890's, Calico lost its population. The miner's packed up, loaded their mules and moved away abandoning the town that once gave them a good living. It became a "ghost town." Walter Knott purchased Calico in the 1950's architecturally restoring all but the five original buildings to look as they did in the 1880's. Calico received State Historical Landmark 782 and in 2005 was proclaimed by then Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to be California's Silver Rush Ghost Town. Today Calico is part of the San Bernardino County Regional Parks system visited by people from around the country and all over the world. The park offers visitors an opportunity to share in its rich history and enjoy the natural beauty of the surrounding desert environment. Along with its history and attractions, Calico Ghost Town has shops, restaurants and offers camping and outdoor recreation not available at most of our other park facilities. Due to the historic nature of the town, not all areas are ADA accessible. CAUTION: Mines in the Calico area are extremely hazardous and must not be approached for any reason! Soundtrack.. ABANDONED TOWN in California desert, gold rush town time has forgotten - Desert Center, California

10:16
Old abandoned town in the California desert - gold rush town time has forgotten Desert Center, California Although not entirely abandoned, (behind the chain link fence is state employee housing), Desert Center is lost in time. Not much to make you stop anymore, but not long ago this restaurant was a nice place to get a bite to eat in the middle of the desert between Arizona and California. I never really took a close look at the ranch housing before, but since I noticed they cut down all the dead palm trees over there I thought it was worth a trip. What great relics from our past with the old metal milk cans and tractors, trains and signs... A very erie feeling as we drove around, but never saw a soul. A couple big rigs pulled over to get a break from driving. Filmed in 1080p HD - May 2012 There is SO much history tied to Desert Center that I couldn't list it all here. Calico Jeep Adventure

06:17
Calico is an old mining ghost town in the desert of Southern California about 150 miles east of Los Angeles. This mining town was very active in the 1800's and by 1950 most of the mines have been abandoned. The entire area is covered in a maze of old mining roads which are now nothing more than Jeep trails ranging in difficulty from flat and smooth to extreme. In this adventure we took one Jeep Wranger JK and three Jeep Cherokees on a run through the Doran trail. MUSIC: "Song 2" performed by Leo Moracchioli and licensed from Frog Leap Studios. Calico Ghost Town. A trip thru a haunted town.

26:50
Come on a tour with me through Calico Ghost Town in wonderful California. I will show you the town which might be haunted, I went into a deep mining shaft to see how the old timers were digging for silver, I am digging for Gold and find some, I took a train ride around town, visited the"crooked" house and checked all the shops in town. The caskets are always on sale in Calico. I also made and uploaded a video about the Ghost Town Bodie in Mono County. Calico is a ghost town and former mining town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. Located in the Calico Mountains of the Mojave Desert region of Southern California, it was founded in 1881 as a silver mining town, and today has been converted into a county park named Calico Ghost Town. Located off Interstate 15, it lies 3 miles (4.8 km) from Barstow and 3 miles from Yermo. Giant letters spelling CALICO can be seen on the Calico Peaks behind the ghost town from the freeway. Walter Knott purchased Calico in the 1950s, architecturally restoring all but the five remaining original buildings to look as they did in the 1880s. Calico received California Historical Landmark #782, and in 2005 was proclaimed by then-Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to be California's Silver Rush Ghost Town. In 1881 four prospectors were leaving Grapevine Station (present day Barstow, California) for a mountain peak to the northeast. Describing the peak as "calico-colored", the peak, the mountain range to which it belonged, and the town that followed were all called Calico. The four prospectors discovered silver in the mountain and opened the Silver King Mine, which was California's largest silver producer in the mid-1880s. A post office was established in early 1882, and the Calico Print, a weekly newspaper, started publishing. The town soon supported three hotels, five general stores, a meat market, bars, brothels, and three restaurants and boarding houses. The county established a school district and a voting precinct. The town also had a deputy sheriff and two constables, two lawyers and a justice of the peace, five commissioners, and two doctors. There was also a Wells Fargo office and a telephone and telegraph service.[5] At its height of silver production during 1883 and 1885, Calico had over 500 mines and a population of 1,200 people. Local badmen were buried in the Boot Hill cemetery. Calico has been restored to the look of the silver rush era when it flourished, although many original buildings were removed and replaced instead with gingerbread architecture and false facades that tourists would expect to see in a Western-themed town.[14] Most of the restored and newly built buildings are made of wood with a simple, rustic architecture and a severely weathered appearance. Some structures still stand dating back to the town's operational years: Lil's Saloon; the town office; the former home of Lucy Lane, which is now the main museum but was originally the town's post office and courthouse; Smitty's Gallery; the general store; and Joe's Saloon. There is also a replica of the schoolhouse on the site of the original building.[14] The one-time homes of the town's Chinese citizens exist as ruins only; only a portion of one rock wall remains of the former "family" residential area on a nearby bluff. In November 1962, Calico Ghost Town was registered as a California Historical Landmark (Landmark #782),[3] In 2002, Calico vied with Bodie in Mono County to be recognized as the Official State Ghost Town. In 2005, a compromise was finally reached when the State Senate and State Assembly agreed to list Bodie as the Official State Gold Rush Ghost Town and Calico the Official State Silver Rush Ghost Town. Today, the park operates mine tours, gunfight stunt shows, gold panning, several restaurants, the historic, 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) narrow gauge Calico & Odessa Railroad, a Mystery Shack, and a number of trinket stores. It is open every day except Christmas and requires an entrance fee. Additional fees are required for some attractions. Overnight camping is also available. Special events are held throughout the year including a Spring Festival in May, Calico Days in early October, and a Ghost Town haunt in late October. The Calico Cemetery, which holds between 96 and 130 graves, has had burials in the 20th and 21st centuries.

Vintage 8mm footage of our family visit to the old Calico Ghost Town attraction located in Yermo, California. We were in the process of moving from Brigham City, Utah to Southern California and stopped off for a visit. This was in late September of 1964 and that particular day, the place was truly a ghost town. I remember we were the only visitors at the time. The film shows the Maggie Mine entrance and the famous Calico Bottle House.

Calico Ghost Town, San Bernardino County, California

01:56
Giant letters spelling CALICO is seen on the Calico Peaks from Interstate 15 in Barstow, San Bernardino County, California, USA, on Aug. 16, 2011. Calico is a ghost town and former mining town located between Los Angeles and Las Vegas in San Bernardino County, California. The ghost town is located in the Calico Mountains of the Mojave Desert region of Southern California. This Old West mining town was founded in 1881 as a silver mining town, and today has been converted into a county park. Located off Interstate 15, it lies 3 miles (4.8 km) from Barstow. Calico is an Old West mining town that has been around since 1881. With its 500 mines, Calico produced over US$20 million in silver ore over a 12-year span. When silver lost its value in the mid-1890s, Calico lost its population. The miners packed up, loaded their mules and moved away abandoning the town that once gave them a good living. It became a "ghost town." Walter Knott purchased Calico in 1950s architecturally restoring all but the five original buildings to look as they did in 1880s. Calico received State Historical Landmark 782 and in 2005 was proclaimed by then Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to be California's Silver Rush Ghost Town. Garnet - A Montana Ghost Town in HD - near Missoula, Montana MT

13:33
High in the mountains of western Montana you will find a REAL ghost town, Garnet, one of Montana’s best preserved and least visited. Garnet was started in 1895 when gold was discovered. The town thrived with over 1,200 miners and their families. Garnet had four hotels, four stores, two barbershops, a butcher shop, a doctor’s office, laundry facilities and thirteen saloons. It even had stagecoach service! After a few years the gold ran out and so did the population. It dwindled down to 150 people by 1905. In 1912 a fire wiped out half of the commercial buildings and was never rebuilt. What you see today are efforts of stabilization, preservation and restoration from many volunteers who are dedicated to help preserve Montana’s rich mining history. Congratulations to each and every one of you! For more information, please see http://www.garnetghosttown.net/ This sequence was captured early September 2014 (ending scene captured June 2013) with a Canon Vixia HFS100 camera and edited with Adobe Premier Pro 6.0 Music used in this production: "Peace of Mind" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Direct Link: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1200099. © 2012 Kevin MacLeod “Water Lily” by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under CC Attribution 3.0. Calico Ghost Town & RV Park - Part 2 of 2

03:40
This was a recent trip to Calico Ghost Town. I spent two days there, staying in their RV Park. Granted, this is in the desert, but they had full hookups and there were places to eat and drink in the park. We enjoyed a delicious burger with fries and a “sarsaparilla” in the Calico House Restaurant. Get used to peanuts on the table, shells on the floor and beverages served in Mason Jars. There’s lots to do while there, including a train ride and the Bottle House (only open on Friday thru Sunday). Souvenir shops and old time photos as well. In this part, I’ve only included the videos I took on the trip. Part 1 has some still photos I shot while there. Calico is a ghost town and former mining town in San Bernardino County, California. It was founded in 1881 as a silver mining town, and today has been converted into a county park named Calico Ghost Town. Located off Interstate 15, it lies 3 miles from Barstow. Giant letters spelling CALICO can be seen on the Calico Peaks behind the ghost town from the freeway. The town was purchased by Walter Knott in the 1950s, who architecturally restored all but the five remaining original buildings to look as they did in the 1880s. Exploring the Abandoned Columbia Mine - Jevne Adit

05:06
The Columbia Mine is located in Baker County, Oregon. The Columbia was mined for gold and was one the largest producers in the area. The Columbia is located very close to a handful of other mines, namely the E & E mine, Golconda Mine, and the North Pole Mine. At one time there were dozens of adits covering the hills in the area but most of them are now collapsed. Stay tuned for a video of the E & E mine!

2013 - CALICO GHOST TOWN / USA

08:58
