You’ve heard of it. You know it’s controversial. But you might not know what it actually involves. Never fear: We’re here to put some fracking knowledge in your brain. Fracking is the delightfully cheeky-sounding nickname for Hydraulic Fracturing... which sounds a little bit less delightful and more like something you do to your enemies in Starcraft. But no! It is something we do to rocks. In the simplest terms, hydraulic fracturing is a way of getting more of the valuable fluids, like oil and natural gas, out of geologic formations under the ground. Deep under earth’s surface, there are deposits of rock that have huge reserves of oil and natural gas within them. But these fossil fuels aren’t like big lakes where you can just stick a straw in and suck. No, these reserves of oil and natural gas are found locked up in pores distributed throughout vast layers of rock, like shale. So how do you get them out at a reasonable pace? Let’s look at a typical fracking setup for something like shale gas: You start with a deep, vertical well, drilling a hole down to the level of the shale you want to mine. The depth will vary, but just for example, one company claims its average fracking well depth is 7,700 feet. That’s deep: almost one and a half miles, or about 2.3 kilometers. When you’re at the right depth, you take a 90-degree turn and continue to drill horizontally, parallel to the target rock layer. This horizontal section of the well can also travel thousands of feet. Now here’s where the “fracturing” comes in. First, you open up holes in the horizontal section of the pipe. Then, you vigorously push a liquid cocktail known as fracking fluid down into the borehole under high pressure. This fracking fluid is usually a mixture of water, some chemical additives -- like acids to help dissolve the rock, and gels to thicken the fluid -- and finally, solid particles called proppants – we’ll get to those in a second. When the mixture reaches the horizontal section of the pipe, it bleeds out through the holes into the surrounding rock, and the extremely high pressure causes the rock to form tons of little fractures, or cracks. Through these cracks, the reserves of fossil fuels contained in the rock can escape into the well to be pumped back up to the surface. What once was entombed in ancient rock is now on the way to powering your car or heating the water for your next shower. And those proppants I mentioned, which are often just grains of sand, help “prop” the cracks in the rock open, so the Earth’s precious bodily fluids continue to escape into the well without the miners applying continuous pressure. So that’s how it works, but then there’s the entirely separate question of whether fracking is a good idea. It’s controversial in many parts of the world. Some people claim it consumes too much fresh water, and worry about what will be done with the fracking fluid after it’s been used. And some opponents wonder if it will create earthquakes, or cause chemical contaminants to leak into our groundwater. The video was made for Park Place Energy Corporation, U.S.A. Park Place Energy is a U.S. public company engaged in exploration for oil and natural gas. Our management team has extensive international oil and gas experience.Our goal is to produce natural gas from coal seams in the Dobrich region of northeast Bulgaria. Between 1965 and 1990 drilling was conducted in and around the area covered by the Block 1-11 Vranino license, and over 220 wells were safely drilled through the aquifers to the coal formations. From these activities, we know the location of the coal formations. Although the license covers about 400 square kilometers, only about 700 square meters (being an area of about 100 meters by 70 meters) will be used for drilling operations. After the well is placed into production, the drilling area may be reduced. No activities will be conducted on or near environmental areas. Our project in Bulgaria involves the exploration for gas from subsurface coal formations, or coal seams. Coal seam gas, also called coalbed methane (CBM), is a naturally occurring gas mixture that’s mostly methane. Coal seam gas generally has more pure concentrations of methane (95%) than other natural gases found in sandstones or carbonate formations. Coal seam gas is formed by the same natural processes that create the coal seams that hold it. By using the information from the wells previously drilled in the area, we can identify the depths of the local water aquifers to ensure that these aquifers are not damaged during drilling or production operations. In the coal seams, the gas adheres to the surface of the coal (known as the matrix) and is also found in the system of naturally occurring fractures (known as cleats). The gas is trapped in the coal matrix and the cleats by water and ground pressure. Extracting the gas involves drilling into the coal seam and reducing the formation pressure primarily by pumping off the water in the formation. As a consequence of the lower pressure, the gas is released from the coal matrix and flows through the cleats to the well bore and then onward to the surface. All of the casings will be cemented back to the surface, providing multiple mechanical barriers to protect the local water aquifers. Coal seams are generally found at depths between 1500 and 2000 meters. The pressure integrity of the casing and cement is tested at every one of the casing before the final wellbore section is drilled through the coal seams. During the drilling of the final section, core samples will be obtained. Analysis of these core samples will allow us to determine if the coal seams produce coal bed methane. After testing is completed, we will install and cement the production casing. This ensures that the well is completely cased and cemented with no possibility of gas escaping in an uncontrolled manner. Once the drilling procedure ends, the drilling rig is removed and a temporary wellhead is installed. A perforation gun is lowered to the coal seams. A high- pressure gas jet is released, piercing the casing and cement barrier to penetrate the coal seam. This process does not involve the injection of fluids, chemicals or sand which would occur with fracking. Water and gas will then flow from the coal seams into the wellbore. The water will be piped to the surface in a center pipe, while the gas will travel in the space between the center pipe and the casing (the annulus). At the surface, water will be deposited into storage tanks, then treated and removed from the drill site. Produced water will then be taken to a government licensed commercial disposal site for final treatment and disposal. Depending on the volume and quality of the gas, it may be piped to a local gas distribution system or compressed on-site into canisters as compressed natural gas (CNG). ￼The natural gas produced from coal seams is almost entirely methane, the same as the gas imported by Bulgaria. Natural gas is a substantially cleaner than coal, oil or burning wood. Natural gas produces 65% fewer emissions than coal per kilowatt hour and 25% fewer emissions than oil. Domestic production of natural gas will reduce the amount of gas Bulgaria must import and provide a cleaner, more environmentally friendly fuel for heating and electrical generation for the local economy. These layers of sand and mud were heavy and this weight turned them into sedimentary rocks. Heat from the earth and the weight of the rocks caused the dead plants and animals to compress into oil. Once the oil is formed, it slowly moves up through pores in the rocks. However in some cases, rocks without any pores leaves oil trapped underground. Oil is found in different parts of the world. The places where oil is extracted are called oil fields. More than half of the world’s oil is produced in the Middle East. To get to the oil, a company must first drill down to it. A rig is set up to support the drill. Then a well is drilled into the ground until the oil is reached. If the oilfield is in the sea, then offshore rigs are used. Horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing of shales in locations such as Pennsylvania are commonplace in response to the need for domestically sourced energy. Although development of these new technologies has increased the domestic production of gas and oil, there have been many concerns relating to contamination of surface water, groundwater and drinking water supplies. Fluorescence excitation-emission spectroscopy is a rapid and inexpensive technique that could be utilized as a screening tool for water samples suspected of contamination by hydraulic fracturing operations. In conjunction with computational analysis of the fluorescence data using techniques such as parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC), questions such as "Has there been contamination caused by fracking" can be answered rapidly and inexpensively. Chemical additives used in fracturing fluids and chemical contaminates in produced waters, such as polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), could be used as a surrogate to determine if contamination of surface waters, groundwaters, and drinking waters was due to hydraulic fracturing operations in nearby locations. Methods developed in this project could aid in water quality monitoring and help guide decisions regarding further testing of water samples suspected of contamination.

This work looks at the gas hydrates formation process pictorially shown here. An initial water droplet will have a hydrate film grow upon it, thicken, and ultimately fully convert into a hydrate. These hydrates may agglomerate and plug a pipeline, causing flow assurance issues. In this work, methane hydrate formation dissociations were studied in the laboratory. This work was published by the Colorado School of the Mines in conjunction with Chevron. In these experiments, Conroe crude oil was placed in water, hydrates were formed under pressure of 77 bar and 4 °C, and subsequently dissociated at a temperature of 20 °C. Both the ParticleTrack with FBRM and ParticleView with PVM were placed inside this pressure cell. The motivation behind this was to understand the hydrate formation dissociation mechanisms under higher water cut conditions that is greater than 60 % water by volume, as is typically found in older or less profitable wells. Here we have a sequence of PVM images taken at 4 °C. Initially, once these water droplets are in the continuous phase of oil, the hydrate film in image B, starts to form around the outside of these droplets, and in image C the hydrates start to agglomerate. Then, the temperature is raised to 20 °C, and these hydrates again begin to dissociate back down to individual flakes. Finally, the system returns to a new equilibrium with occluded oil droplets. In the next example, FBRM was also used to measure flow assurance in a pipeline by IFP and Total in France. There were two experimental set ups, the first of which was an Archimedes Loop, which was temperature controlled from 273 – 283 K. In order to avoid hydrate crushing, no pumps were used, gas lift was used to regulate the flow, the system had an overall length of 36 m, and an internal diameter of approximately 1 cm. The second experimental set up involved the use of a Lyre Loop. The Lyre Loop was similarly controlled from 273 – 323 K. The flow was held constant, despite changes in solution viscosity, a Moineau pump was used to regulate this flow. This was a much larger system, with an overall length of 140 m, and an internal diameter of nearly 5 cm. Looking at the Archimedes Loop, temperature and pressure are monitored from the onset of hydrate formation, through to stoppage of flow. Looking here at the temperature, pressure, and mean velocity information, we can couple these factors in order to generate a friction factor; if you look at the FBRM data taken concurrently, we see that there is an increase in the FBRM mean dimension at the same time the friction factor is increased. This is associated with the agglomeration in the system, FBRM can be used to directly monitor the rate and degree of agglomeration, and identify conditions where agglomeration occurs, and plugging is probable. For the Lyre Loop, FBRM was used to characterize the breakage of hydrates under shear. The upper graph shows the temperature and friction factor of the Lyre Loop as a function of time. Initially there is an emulsion present, as shown by the FBRM chord length distribution in the lower left, which is unimodal, with most of the material being under 10 microns in dimension. As the friction factor increases, here at time 180 minutes, we see that the distribution is now bimodal. This indicates that not only do we have the initial emulsion, but we also have the formation of hydrates. This continues on at time 240 minutes. In the case of the Lyre Loop, a high level shear is generated in order to keep the constant velocity of the system. This shear results in the breakage of hydrates. We are able to track that very effectively with the FBRM, as illustrated by the difference between the two distributions measured at 240 and 320 minutes, where we see a clear reduction in the amount of material above 100 microns in dimension.

The froth is skimmed of collected and allow to subside to get the concentrated ore. Roasting The concentrated ore is heated strongly in the reverberatory furnace, in excess of air. During roasting, i) Moisture is removed. ii) The volatile impurities are removed. iii) Sulphur, phosphorus, arsenic and antimony which are present as impurity are removed as volatile oxides. Sulphur plus oxygen gives sulphur dioxide. Phosphorus plus oxygen gives phosphorus pentoxide. Arsenic plus oxygen gives arsenic trioxide. The copper pyrite is partly converted into sulphides of copper and iron. Copper pyrire plus oxygen gives copper sulphide plus iron sulphide plus sulphur dioxide. Iron sulphide plus oxygen gives iron two oxide plus sulphur dioxide. Smelting The roasted ore is mixed with powdered coke and sand and is heated in a blast furnace. It is made of steel plates lined inside with fire clay bricks. Hot air at 800 degree Celsius is introduced from the tuyers near the base of the furnace. As a result, the following changes occur. Iron sulphide plus oxygen gives iron two oxide plus sulphur di oxide. Iron oxide plus silicon dioxide gives ferro-silicate. that is a fusible slag. That is a fusible slag. As a result of smelting, two separate molten layers are formed at the bottom of the furnace. The upper layer consists of slag and is removed as a waste while the lower layer is called matte. It chiefly consists of cuprous sulphide and some unchanged ferrous sulphide. Bessemerisation The molten matte is transfered to a Bessemer converter as shown in the visual. The Bessemer is mounted on a horizontal axis and is fitted with small pipes called tuyeres through which a blast of hot air and fine sand is admitted. Any sulphur, arsenic and antimony still present escape as their respective oxides. Ferrous sulphide present in matte is oxidised to ferrous oxide which combines with silica to form slag. Iron sulphide plus oxygen gives Iron two oxide plus sulphur di oxide. Iron oxide plus silicon dioxide gives ferrosilicate. That is a fusible slag. Some of the cuprous sulphide undergoes oxidation to form cuprous oxide which then reacts with more cuprous sulphide to give copper metal. The impure metal thus obtained is called blister copper and is about 98% pure. Cuprus sulphide plus oxygen gives cuprus oxide plus sulphur dioxide. Cuprus oxide plus cuprus sulphide gives copper plus sulphur dioxide. Refining Blister copper contains about 2% of impurities and it is purified by electrolytic refining. Electrolytic Refining This method is used to get metal of high degree of purity. For electrolytic refining of copper, A block of impure copper metal acts as anode A thin plate of pure copper metal acts as cathode Copper sulphate solution acidified with sulphuric acid is taken as electrolyte.
