Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage Process and Well Pads In Alberta, Canada, 80 per cent of the oil sands are buried too deep below the surface for open pit mining and can only be accessed through in-situ methods such as Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD). With the SAGD technique, a pair of horizontal wells, situated 4 to 6 metres above the other, is drilled from a central well pad. In a plant nearby, water is transformed into steam which then travels through above-ground pipelines to the wells and enters the ground via a steam injection (top) well. The steam heats the heavy oil to a temperature at which it can flow by gravity into the producing (bottom) well. The steam injection and oil production happen continuously and simultaneously. The resulting oil and condensed steam emulsion is then piped from the producing well to the plant, where it is separated and treated. The water is recycled for generating new steam. Up to 90 per cent of the water used during extraction is recycled. Steam oil ratio, an efficiency measure of steam assisted gravity drainage operations, has been significantly lowered and one project in Alberta is achieving a ratio as low as two. This means using two barrels of water, injected as steam, to produce one barrel of oil. A lower ratio also means less use of natural gas. It can take as little as one gigajoule per barrel to heat water into steam, which results in lower greenhouse gas emissions. Emissions for SAGD project are around .06 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per barrel of bitumen. When emissions from SAGD are compared with combined emissions from mining and upgrading, the carbon dioxide emissions per barrel are at par. While in Orinoco Petroleum Belt in Venezuela, which has a better geology and footprint uses conventional heavy oil production methods such as water-flooding or CHOP (Cold Heavy Oil Production), where oil flows to long horizontal wells with a large number of multi-lateral branches, without the use of heat or steam. Venezuela's oil recovery is quite low, often less than 10%, and there has been little incentive for producers to improve production rates.

ELECTRO FLUX Magnetic drum separators offer the highest level of magnetic strength and are appropriate for many different applications, including scrap processing, auto shredding, mining, aggregate, or anywhere large volumes of metal need to be removed The concept of drum separation is very simple - material is fed to a rotating shell revolving around a stationary magnet. Ferrous metal remains on the shell surface until it passes from the magnetic field - separating it from the normal trajectory of the nonferrous material. The design of the Drum Separator features a continuously self-cleaning magnet, which can be provided as the drum only or as a complete assembly with the housing & drive included. Material to be processed enters the top of the drumseparator and flows across the surface of the drum. As the drum shell rotates around the stationary magnetic field, all Non ferrous product which is unaffected by the magnet falls free from the drum into the cleaned material flow. Any ferrous tramp metal is captured by the magnetic field and held on the drums surface. As the drum rotates, the metal is carried past the diverter and released outside of the magnetic field.

This is used in several processing industries. Historically this was first used in the mining industry The following steps are followed: 1.Grinding to liberate the mineral particles 2.Reagent conditioning to achieve hydrophobic surface charges on the desired particles 3.Collection and upward transport by bubbles in an intimate contact with air or nitrogen 4.Formation of a stable froth on the surface of the flotation cell 5.Separation of the mineral laden froth from the bath (flotation cell) Simple flotation circuit for mineral concentration. Numbered triangles show direction of stream flow, Various flotation reagents are added to a mixture of ore and water (called pulp) in a conditioning tank. The flow rate and tank size are designed to give the minerals enough time to be activated. The conditioner pulp  is fed to a bank of rougher cells which remove most of the desired minerals as a concentrate. The rougher pulp  passes to a bank of scavenger cells where additional reagents may be added. The scavenger cell froth  is usually returned to the rougher cells for additional treatment, but in some cases may be sent to special cleaner cells. The scavenger pulp is usually barren enough to be discarded as tails. More complex flotation circuits have several sets of cleaner and re-cleaner cells, and intermediate re-grinding of pulp or concentrate. froth flotation cell. Extraction of copper from copper pyrites involves the following steps. This tutorial is created based on plus two Chemistry Books. Crushing and concentration The ore is crushed and then concentrated by froth-floatation process. What is froth floatation process? In this process the powdered ore is mixed with water and a little pine oil, that is a foaming agent and the whole mixture is then stir vigorously by blowing compressed air. The oil forms the foam or froth with the air. The ore particles stick to the froth which rises to the surface. While the rocky and earthy impurities that is the gangue or matrix are left in water. The froth is skimmed of collected and allow to subside to get the concentrated ore. Roasting The concentrated ore is heated strongly in the reverberatory furnace, in excess of air. During roasting, i) Moisture is removed. ii) The volatile impurities are removed. iii) Sulphur, phosphorus, arsenic and antimony which are present as impurity are removed as volatile oxides. Sulphur plus oxygen gives sulphur dioxide. Phosphorus plus oxygen gives phosphorus pentoxide. Arsenic plus oxygen gives arsenic trioxide. The copper pyrite is partly converted into sulphides of copper and iron. Copper pyrire plus oxygen gives copper sulphide plus iron sulphide plus sulphur dioxide. Iron sulphide plus oxygen gives iron two oxide plus sulphur dioxide. Smelting The roasted ore is mixed with powdered coke and sand and is heated in a blast furnace. It is made of steel plates lined inside with fire clay bricks. Hot air at 800 degree Celsius is introduced from the tuyers near the base of the furnace. As a result, the following changes occur. Iron sulphide plus oxygen gives iron two oxide plus sulphur di oxide. Iron oxide plus silicon dioxide gives ferro-silicate. that is a fusible slag. Copper glance plus oxygen gives cupride plus sulphur di oxide. Cupride plus iron sulphide gives copper glance plus iron oxide. Iron oxide plus silicon dioxide gives ferro-silicate. That is a fusible slag. As a result of smelting, two separate molten layers are formed at the bottom of the furnace. The upper layer consists of slag and is removed as a waste while the lower layer is called matte. It chiefly consists of cuprous sulphide and some unchanged ferrous sulphide. Bessemerisation The molten matte is transfered to a Bessemer converter as shown in the visual. The Bessemer is mounted on a horizontal axis and is fitted with small pipes called tuyeres through which a blast of hot air and fine sand is admitted. Any sulphur, arsenic and antimony still present escape as their respective oxides. Ferrous sulphide present in matte is oxidised to ferrous oxide which combines with silica to form slag. Iron sulphide plus oxygen gives Iron two oxide plus sulphur di oxide. Iron oxide plus silicon dioxide gives ferrosilicate. That is a fusible slag. Some of the cuprous sulphide undergoes oxidation to form cuprous oxide which then reacts with more cuprous sulphide to give copper metal. The impure metal thus obtained is called blister copper and is about 98% pure. Cuprus sulphide plus oxygen gives cuprus oxide plus sulphur dioxide. Cuprus oxide plus cuprus sulphide gives copper plus sulphur dioxide. Refining Blister copper contains about 2% of impurities and it is purified by electrolytic refining. Electrolytic Refining This method is used to get metal of high degree of purity. For electrolytic refining of copper, A block of impure copper metal acts as anode A thin plate of pure copper metal acts as cathode Copper sulphate solution acidified with sulphuric acid is taken as electrolyte. When electric current is passed through the electrolytic solution pure copper get deposited on the cathode ,impurities settle near the anode in the form of sludge called anode mud.

The Earth’s surface, millions of years ago, was covered with more water than what it has today and living in this were billions of tiny plants and animals. When these plants and animals died, they fell to the ocean floor and piled up. Sand from eroding rocks and mud covered them up. These layers of sand and mud were heavy and this weight turned them into sedimentary rocks. Heat from the earth and the weight of the rocks caused the dead plants and animals to compress into oil. Once the oil is formed, it slowly moves up through pores in the rocks. However in some cases, rocks without any pores leaves oil trapped underground. Oil is found in different parts of the world. The places where oil is extracted are called oil fields. More than half of the world’s oil is produced in the Middle East. To get to the oil, a company must first drill down to it. A rig is set up to support the drill. Then a well is drilled into the ground until the oil is reached. If the oilfield is in the sea, then offshore rigs are used. I have no idea why this thing stopped pumping oil during my recording - there were no people around, no security systems, nothing to stop it as far as I could tell! However, Perdyfly1 wrote to say, "The pumpjack stopped because it was on a timer. I repair the wellheads and often have to wait for the timer to restart the pumpjack so I can shut it down myself." Thanks for the info Perdyfly1!!!! Anyway, a "pumpjack" can also be called a "nodding donkey," "pumping unit," "horsehead pump," "beam pump," "sucker rod pump (SRP)," "grasshopper pump, ""thirsty bird," and "jack pump." These types of pumps are used to mechanically lift liquid out of a well if there's not enough bottom pressure to naturally force the fluid up. I found this particular unit near the town of Rangely, Colorado, about 440 kilometres (270 miles) west of Denver. "Ken Bailey" provided this information on September 12, 2014: This pump is on a well not far from the Blue Mountain Cutoff, about 2/3 of the way eastward through the ten-mile-wide Rangely Field. The pump model is a Lufkin conventional we used to call '64's," the approximate length in inches that the pump would pull the "polished rod" out of the well on each upstroke. In the 1950's, Rangely had 500 pumping wells; today only about 90 still have surface pumpers remaining (many are pumped from underground). This Lufkin is an older model, the curved lines on the "Equalizer" (the part of the rear of the "walking beam" where the arms from the crank come up to meet it) give it away. At one time, these stretched out in straight rows for as far as the eye could see, set apart from each other on neat 40' spacing like a checkerboard. It was a neat place to grow up, and I wandered the field freely as a kid, but I wouldn't recommend it today..." In August 2013 GilbertLA63 provided this info: "These Lufkin pumping units were ubiquitous in the Long Beach and Signal Hill areas of southern Los Angeles County in the 1950's. None of the pumping units then were on timers, and there were literally wells everywhere you looked. Of course, that included the whole Los Angeles basin." [ed note: as a small boy in Long Beach, during the sixties, I, myself, remember so wells still visible in Long Beach while my family lived there] In October 2011 hefley4 provided this additional info: "Rangely is located in the great Uintah Desert in the extreme northwest corner of Colorado -- the desert stretches deep across the border into Utah, and much of Dinosaur National Monument is found on or near it. It is reputed to be the bed for an ancient inland sea, not surprising as many large oil deposits are found beneath former oceans that provided the immese pressure to crush the fossil remains into oil over long periods of time." "hefley4" added this information in October 2011 as well:: Artesia's named was changed to Dinosaur somewhere around 1960 to capitalize on the growing tourist trade coming to view the amazing bone discoveries and spectacular scenery of Dinosaur National Monument. In my days in Rangely in the '60's, Dinosaur had no high school, and their kids were bussed the 20 mi into Rangely -- Dinosaur was the Rangely "suburbs" ... ! In January 2011 hefley4 added this info: "This pump is a conventional "walking beam horsehead" type manufactured by Lufkin Industries, probably in the 1950's. Once found in Rangely by the hundreds, Lufkin conventional pumps shared the field with "Bethlehem," "National," "Continental EMSCO," and "Oil Well Supply" model pumps on original placements, many under silver derrick towers. Most were black back than, before environmental rules mandated the sand paint. All ran continuously back then, but have auto-on-off "load-sensors" now. There was a picture on the Colo. School of Mines website of this same wellsite with a wooden derrick over a 'National Oil Supply' 1940's oil pump..." In December, 2010 lucincutoff provided this info: Some wells have timers, others are controlled remotely etc.. I know exactly where this well is. It is about 2 miles west of the town of Rangely. This particular pump is one of the older styles found in the Rangely Weber Sand Unit and is more than 60 years old. Fracking has proven itself to be helpful in alleviating some dependents on the importation of foreign fuels, and is a stepping-stone for new technologies and energy independence for the United States. Until recently, pockets of natural gas have been lying approximately 1.5 miles beneath the surface of U.S. soil. Fracking allows us to recover this resource and bring relief to the ever-growing energy crisis facing the U.S. The fracking process has been used, or is currently being used, in a number of states. The process begins with drilling a borehole into the earth to a depth of approximately 1.5 miles or about 7,700 feet below the surface. Safety is a top priority, and precautionary measures are in place surrounding the borehole, such as protective steel casing, as well as additional cement casing at ground water levels. To help visualize the extreme depths at which extraction occurs, imagine you are standing on the observation deck of the Sears Tower, now known as the Willis Tower, in Chicago, Illinois, and you were looking down to the streets below. Now imagine five of the Willis Tower's stacked on top of each other, and looking downward from that distance. Five Willis Towers stacked vertically are the equivalent of 7,700 feet, the approximate death at which extraction occurs. One of the main concerns voiced by those opposing fracking, is the potential to contaminate the underground water supply. Preservation of ground water quality is the first priority in the fracking process, and this is addressed by placing additional steel cement casings around the borehole to prevent leaks in the aquifer. As the borehole is drilled into the ground, it passes through many different layers of earth and several thousand feet of solid rock layers. These rock layers, such as granite for example, are extremely dense, and therefore not affected during the fracking process. The density of those layers acts as a natural barrier between the shale layer where the extraction occurs, and the groundwater level, and thereby will prevent any natural gas or chemicals from seeping into the ground water supply. Fracking provides a valuable energy source for the United States. Natural gas is a clean fossil fuel. Using natural gas as an energy source, in lieu of other energy sources, such as coal for example, will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 17%, and thus lead the United States towards a carbon-light environment. Moreover, the abundance of natural gas on U.S. soil will not only support America's energy needs for a longer period of time than other fossil fuels, it will also create jobs, stimulate the economy, and enable the United States to produce its own energy supply that in turn reduces our need to rely on foreign fuel imports. Extracting natural gas by fracking provides enormous benefits with minimal risks. It lowers energy costs and benefits the environment. The potential risks involved in fracking are minimal, and are easily managed. As we have seen here, ground water is protected by thick steel tubing and cement casing, and fracking occurs miles away from drinking water. New technologies and processes continue to ensure that safety is a top priority.

You have just watched a video broadcasting the self-cleaning and water repellent properties on a leaf surface (lotus effect). What you have seen in the video occurs due to a specific surface phenomenon called superhydrophobicity. It is known that lotus leaf behaves as a super hydrophobic surface. So, Superhydrophobicity is sometimes referred to as the lotus effect. Let us now analyze the characteristics and applications of this phenomenon. Superhydrophobic surfaces contain micro protrusions that are coated by nano waxy materials. When water droplets are poured, they will sit on the tips of the hydrophobic protrusion. The combined structure will trap a layer of air between the surface and the leaf. So, the liquid droplets will not adhere to the surface but instead will move freely taking dirty particles. As shown in the video, the different liquids used (water and honey) roll easily off the surface of the leaf .The hydrophobic leaf surface has a low surface tension and roughness initiation components. This is why the liquid droplet has a very high contact angle (𝜽greater than150) with respect to the leaf surface. As a result, the contact area between the liquid drop and the surface will be minimized and leads to the droplets forming a spherical shape on the surface. For a surface that has a lotus effect, air can be trapped under the liquid droplet. This will cause the liquid droplet to settle on a surface as if on a bed of nails that have solid and air fractions. Cassie-Baxter equation can be used to describe this. The contact angle is a function of the surface roughness, solid fraction, air fraction and the corresponding contact angle measured at flat surface (Young equation). As the solid fraction approaches 0, the Cassie-Baxter contact angle will approach 1800. The interest in superhydrophobic surfaces has grown exponentially over recent decades resulting in the development of many practical applications. This phenomenon inspires engineers to produce superhydrophobic surfaces that mimic the natural ones. And because of this, many applications have been already established in food and beverage industry, oil-water separation, microcondensation, mining industries, construction, humidity proof coatings for electronic devices, controlling transportation of fluids, anti-bio fouling and water corrosion prevention. An interesting application which is currently under research is the development of micro fuel cell chips. Some of the chemical and physical methods used by engineers today to fabricate such superhydrophobic surfaces are wax solidification, lithography, vapor deposition, polymer reconformation, Sol-gel processing, electrohydrodynamics and electrospinning. It is our job as engineers to utilize these various methods in order to enhance the applications of superhydrophobic surfaces benefitting the human population in more than one way.
