AME Webinar: Lean Management, Lean Leadership and Leader Standard Work
Leader standard work (LSW) is the highest leverage element in a lean management system. It closes the loop on process focus and keeps it closed. But, leader standard work is NOT the starting point. A value proposition comes first, one that answers the universal question, “What’s in it for me?” The value proposition holds that if you like the reduction in daily chaos and firefighting from the tools of lean production, lean management and LSW will sustain the benefits and deliver a better day at work. For leaders at a tactical level, from team lead to plant or unit, lean tools improve performance and stability. So understanding the nuts and bolts of lean applications makes sense to these leaders. But, it is the rare executive, even from an operations background, who’s interested in learning to assess or apply the nuts and bolts of lean’s tools. Yet, it’s by gemba walking executives on these very nuts and bolts that internal “leansters” try to engage their executives in lean. It doesn’t work, executives disengage from being gemba walked as a lean apprentice, and the lean initiative is at risk of being supplanted by the next ‘big thing’ that promises painless improvement and captures their attention. This webinar covers concepts and application of lean management, emphasizing the role and development of LSW, developing LSW that’s meaningful in the reality of daily leadership and daily improvement. It casts LSW as a development discipline versus mere compliance, and details the rationale, approach, process and tools. This will engage senior leaders in the lean initiative through LSW that’s meaningful to them personally and professionally in terms of their unique managerial responsibilities. David Mann is the author of Creating a Lean Culture: Tools to Sustain Lean Conversions. The book, awarded the Shingo Prize for Operational Excellence, is an international bestseller in its field, translated into six languages. The book introduced the behaviors, practices and tools of a lean management system, including leader standard work, to the lean community. The third edition was published in 2014. Mann’s consulting, teaching and coaching experience includes lean transformation in manufacturing, enterprise business processes and healthcare organizations. His practice includes clients in healthcare, mining and energy, discrete and process manufacturing, medical device and pharmaceutical manufacturing, distribution, technology, food processing as well as enterprise business processes. [OEMF2017] Transportation for a Sustainable CisLunar Economy
20-21 September 2017 http://www.acser.unsw.edu.au/oemf2017 Melissa Sampson Deputy Program Manager Advanced Programs United Launch Alliance Transportation for a Sustainable CisLunar Economy United Launch Alliance (ULA) is currently developing new technologies to deliver reliable, regular, flexible launch services for space commercialization. There is a vast frontier beyond LEO waiting to be tapped by mining, science, manufacturing, research, and technology, all enabled by transportation innovations. This presentation describes various advances in transportation, such as ACES (Advanced Cryogenic Upper Stage) and XEUS ( eXperimental Enhanced Upper Stage), a lunar lander. ACES will deliver significantly higher performance at a lower recurring cost, with almost 3x the propellant capacity and 4x the thrust of the current Centaur. Most notably, new subsystems enable long duration missions, more burns and added payload power. With reliable and regular beyond Earth transportation, the space beyond LEO is suddenly accessible and affordable. Melissa Sampson is a program manager leading the XEUS (eXperimental Enhanced Upper Stage) program, a lunar lander. Prior to joining Advanced Programs, she was the Building Leadership and Sustaining Talent (BLAST) program facilitator, coach and mentor, Operations Excellence Manager, Supply Chain category manager, and Executive Liaison to the Chief Operating Officer. Outside the office, Melissa sits on the Board of Directors for Girls in STEM, an organization inspiring girls to visualize themselves in STEM careers and empowering them to pursue STEM professions. Melissa earned her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Colorado and her B.S. in Chemistry from the College of William and Mary. She is a certified ULA Lean & Six Sigma Black Belt and is an International Coaching Federation (ICF) certified coach.

SGI/ISP Strip Mining Operations at Tom's Creek, PA
A look at strip mining operations in the Blue Ridge Mountains, just above Fairfield and Carroll Valley, PA. Once part of Michaux State Forest, on Saturday, April 13th, 2013 Hamiltonban Township's Board of Supervisors voted 3 to 2 to rezone 110 acres from forest conservation to industrial to allow SGI/ISP to expand operations onto land local taxpayers and conservation groups had purchased and placed in the PA DNR's hands for managing the care and protection of Tom's Creek, a vital water source for the valley below and the Potomac River watershed. The rezoning made possible by a most controversial land swap conducted between the Pennsylvania Department of Natural Resources and multi-national SGI/ISP. http://www.friendsoftomscreek.org/land-acquisition/
