History of Cornish Mining - Botallack Mine - Features in Poldark

03:01
Visit to Botallack Mine April 2014. The Botallack Mine is in west Cornwall, United Kingdom. The village is in a former tin mining area situated between the town of St Just in Penwith and the village of Pendeen. Crown Mines, former tin mines, are low down the cliffs north of Botallack. There are two engine houses here and the mine extends for about 400 metres out under the Atlantic ocean; the deepest shaft is 250 fathoms (about 500m) below sea level. The mine ruins in the area are protected by the National Trust. There are two arsenic works opposite the Botallack Mine count house. At the top of the cliffs there are also the remains of one of the mine's arsenic-refining works. The BBC television series Poldark was filmed partly in Botallack, using Manor Farm as Nampara. The mining developments around Botallack form part of the St Just mining district's successful inclusion in the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage site which was approved in July 2006. Cornwall's Geevor Tin Mine

01:44
The PBS series Poldark shows the heyday of Cornwall's tin-mining industry. But in the late 20th century, that industry collapsed. And today, the last mine to close is now open to visitors — dedicated to telling the miners’ story. The Geevor Mine, which closed in 1990, represents the last hurrah not only of Cornish tin mining, but, in a sense, of Britain's Industrial Age. Exploring it, I gained a better appreciation for the simple yet noble lives of miners. And my visit nudged me to consider more thoughtfully the plight of miners in the USA. Causing you to see things differently — whether you tend to be liberal or conservative — is a powerful value of travel. If you travel and don’t find yourself reconsidering things you thought you understood in at least a little different light, perhaps the value of your experience is being needlessly blunted by a closed mind. What are some ways that your travel experience has shaken your strongly held ways of seeing things? This is Day 79 of my 100 Days in Europe series. As I research my guidebooks and make new TV shows, I’m reporting on my experiences and lessons learned in Vienna, the Alps, the Low Countries, England, and beyond. Cornish Mineshaft Adventures

08:34
We revisit a old tin mine in mid Cornwall, the only way into this mine is via ropes and it's a vertical 90ft shaft. The workings are old and small, mostly crawling on hands and knees as we go through the mine.
Exploring a 1800's Cornish tin mine

05:17
We explore a 1800's Cornish tin mine in the heart of Cornwall's mining district. Between 1826 and 1856 records show that the mine produced 755 tons of 4.5% copper ore and 7,660 tons of black tin. The mine is around 160 - 180ft from surface to the water level, the stope continues for a few hundred feet below the water. Back in the days it would have been working a huge steam driven pumping engine would have removed the water at the lower levels, 2 of these engine houses remain on the surface as a reminder of the mining past. - Please drop by my facebook page and give me a follow/like: https://www.facebook.com/CornishMineExplorer/ - Important Note: We don't post the real names of the mines featured in our videos, to protect the sites and to stop others with less experience putting themselves in danger. If you know this place, please don't mention it by name or location. Our team consists of ex miners, cavers and mine rescue, every trip is taken with caution and callouts made to other members of where we are underground along with air monitors when needed. Please do not put yourself at risk or others by entering these abandonded mines.

Disused mining sites in Britain gain world heritage status

04:09
Pendeen, Cornwall - recent 1. Various, disused mines and mining-related structures at Geevor mine Truro, Cornwall - recent 2. SOUNDBITE: (English) Deborah Boden, Coordinator for Cornish Mining World Heritage Site "Well World Heritage Status is awarded by the United Nations Education Scientific and Cultural Organisation, and basically it's for those places around the globe that for either their natural or their cultural significance are of more importance than purely locally. What we're talking about here are places that have in some way contributed to or changed the way we live as a human society. And that's why Cornwall's mining industry was awarded that status." Camborne, Cornwall - recent 3. Tilt up engine building 4. Wide shot, mine building with rusty wheel in foreground London - 2 November 2006 5. SOUNDBITE (English) Franseco Bandarin, director of World Heritage at UNESCO: "You see industrial archaeology is becoming a very important domain of conservation. We have many archaeological sites, mainly in this country, because it was the first country for the industrial revolution that signify the advancement of humanity. So this site is probably one of the most important in the world for the mining and production of copper and tin. So in a way it represents an extraordinary example of that sector in the industrial revolution." Camborne, Cornwall - recent 6. Entrance to King Edward Mine museum 7. Pan across museum display piece 8. SOUNDBITE: (English) Tony Brooks, Mining Engineer/Director, King Edward Mine Museum "Cornwall led the world in mining, led it technologically, producing probably in excess of half the world's copper - remember, the world was a different place of course in 1850 - a major producer of copper, and then later tin which had been produced in smallish amounts for a long period. And then by 1870 we were probably producing something like half the world's tin." 9. Tony Brooks starting machinery in mine building 10. Drive wheel turning 11. Pull out from main water wheel 12. Worker brushing off 'shaking table' 13. Close shot 'shaking table' 14. Close shot, water dripping 15. SOUNDBITE: (English) Tony Brooks, Mining Engineer/Director, King Edward Mine Museum "It was the development of high-pressure steam by people like Trevithick and other engineers who took the basic beam engine, which was a very simple piece of kit, and turned it into what was known as the Cornish Engine which pumped all the mines here well into the twentieth century and was exported around the world. You can go to South Australia and you will see the iconic engine houses you see here. You can go to Mexico, you can go to the far west of Ireland and it looks like little Cornwall. The technology was driven by the minerals below our feet." 16. Worker demonstrating technology to visitor 17. Various of machinery used for extracting minerals from ore 18. SOUNDBITE: (English) Deborah Boden, Coordinator for Cornish Mining World Heritage Site "Cornwall and West Devon were an incubator for the industrial revolution. Without the minerals, without the expertise and the population that was here, many of the things that we now take for granted would not have been able to be developed or developed so quickly. And from here thousands literally hundreds of thousands of people migrated around the globe. They took their skills, the took their culture with them and a result you have Cornish mining landscapes and the residual communities, if you like, all around the globe. That's definitely worth recognising and celebrating." Pendeen, Cornwall - recent 19. Entrance to Geevor Tin Mine 20. Geevor sign 21. Tilt up shaft 'headgear' 22. Winching mechanism 23. Poldark times in a typical Cornish Tin and Copper Mine

06:18
This film will give you some idea of how miners in Poldark times would have worked as we descend a typical man way laddered shaft. Poldark I am sure will be as good as before on the BBC but this shows you what it actually would have looked like. Poldark. Ross Poldark returns to England after fighting in the American Revolution. His family and friends thought he was dead. The woman he hoped to marry is now engaged to his cousin. His father is dead, and the property he has inherited has been allowed to deteriorate. It is the late 1700s in Cornwall, England. This is a family drama, but is also about the challenges and conflicts between the rich and the poor. It is a time when fishermen are not catching much fish, tin and copper mines are closing down because prices are too low, but the price of food and rents are high. Ross faces the challenge of making his land productive, caring for the tenants who rely on him, and trying to win back the woman he loved - or finding a reason to live without her. by prolific British novelist Winston Graham

Geevor & Lelant Mines Under The Atlantic

05:56
Geevor Tin Mine is a tin mine in the far west of Cornwall, England, United Kingdom, between the villages of Pendeen and Trewellard. It was operational between 1911 and 1990 during which time it produced about 50,000 tons of black tin. It is now a museum and heritage centre left as a living history of a working tin mine. Levant Mine and Beam Engine is a National Trust property at Trewellard, Pendeen, near St Just, Cornwall, England, UK. Its main attraction is that it has the world's only Cornish beam engine still operated by steam on its original site. There is also a visitor centre, a short underground tour, and a cliff-top footpath that leads to Botallack Mine. The property is on the site of the former Levant Mine, established in 1820 and closed in 1930, where tin and copper ores were raised. The mine reached a depth of about 600 metres. It got the nickname "mine under the sea", because tunnels were driven up to 2.5 km from the cliffs under the sea. :- Information taken from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

History of Cornish Mining - Kill the Wabbit underground adventure.

29:52
History of Cornish Tin Mines - Kill the Wabbit another underground adventure with Gazman. In this episode of History of Cornish Tin Mines, we start up at the engine houses in Troon before entering an undisclosed mine. With a little Buggs Bunny chase for fun, this trip visits 2 big stopes and the shaft station. This place would make an epic horror movie but as always, experience and a high degree of caution is required in this sort of environment and certainly not for the inexperienced or unguided, to top that off bad air needs monitoring as it gets very thin in places. The shaft here is 950 feet deep and concrete lined to perfection down to 700 feet, with a modern ladder way, zinc tin and copper were mined here in the large stopes that range from 1 metre wide to 19 metres wide. If you're on holiday in Cornwall and would like to look around a Cornish Tin Mine I would recommend Geevor Tin Mine at Pendeen, this is where I worked as a miner, the staff and the historic set up here are excellent and a short walk from here is the excellent Levant Mine museum where you can visit the scene of the 1919 disaster, this is run by the national trust. History of Cornish Mining - The Time Tunnel - Great Flat Lode

15:48
My Exploration of the Great Flat Lode 15th June 2014 In the 1860s a 2 mile long 'lode' of tin ore was discovered in this area, where copper had previously been worked. Lying at an angle of 30 degrees, rather than the more usual 70 degrees, it was flatter than most, giving it its name the 'Great Flat Lode'. Drilling holes in the hard Cornish rock was time consuming and hard work. Early miners drilled holes by hand and used black gunpowder to blast the rock apart. A steal drill rod, was used to create the hole using a hammer or two miners hammering for increased speed. The steal was turned after each hit of the hammer, this would chip out a piece of rock. This would eventually create a round hole. The drilled hole was called a 'shothole'. black gunpowder could be poured into the hole and ignited to blast the rock apart. Drilling holes in the hard rock of Cornwall was laborious and time consuming. It could take many hours of strenuous effort to bore a 2ft hole, When I worked at Geevor Tin Mine I could drill 20 plus 6-8 holes in granite during a shift. Filmed on GoPro 3 black edition, music mixes are my own creation. Time Tunnel intro from 1960s TV program. Trelawny sung outside a pub in Helston. West Cornwall Mines

05:24
A scenic look at some of the old tin mines and engine houses in the far West of Cornwall. At one time this was one of the most industrialised parts of Britain. Pretty much the opposite now. Two of the mines featured in this video had Cornwall's worst mining disasters. At Levant mine in 1919 the lift (man engine) carrying the miners to work broke sending 31 men plummeting to their deaths. An even more horrific accident took place in the mine next door. At Wheal Owles In 1893 a miscalculation lead to the sea breaching the mine drowning 20 men. History of Cornish Mining - Disused Copper Mine - Poldark Times

Footage taken in disused copper mine, undisclosed location. Filmed on GoPro 3, this mine was closed in the mid 1800's. Again as in most old workings timber work is still in good order. Has a few effects added to spice it up a little, such a scary place and all music mixed by myself. tags History of Cornish Tin Mines collection History of mining or mining historycornish tin mining, mining, cornwall, tim mining, stoper, stoping, pasty, mining history, cornish history, hand drilling, drilling, blasting, cornish tin miner, geevor miner, Cligga mine, cligga, cligga head History of mining or mining history. British Instructional Films Ltd presents a Classroom Film. Graphic map of the world with arrows pointing to places where tin mining takes place. Flashing arrow points to spot in England - Cornwall. Cartoon drawing of a tin mine inside large arrow pointing to its location. Zoom in to the spot on the map. Pan down large metal tower with machinery operating inside it. Closer view of the tower with man walking towards the camera. A group of miners enter a lift. Man operates lift winch. C/U of the winch mechanism. The lift descends, we see the men's heads going lower then the top of the lift. Graphic animation shows how the lift goes deep into the ground. Closer view animation of the lift descending. Depths are indicated as the lift goes lower and lower until eventually it reaches 335 fathoms. The gate at the bottom of the lift shaft is open and the miners walk out into the pit. Graphic representation of the cage shafts, pump shaft and tramways. An arrow points to an area which is "Preparing to blast." Two miners work on the rock face, one is bare chested - they both wear miners helmets with lights. One of the miners operates a mechanical drill. He then inserts explosives into the hole, aided by the other man. C/U of taper being lit. Animation of the spark travelling up the taper and a cartoon explosion. Small mechanical digger scoops up the ore then dumps it into a truck on wheels. The miners push trucks along the tramways. Good shot of them pushing truck around a corner with their miners lamps alight. They tip the ore into a pit where another miner breaks it down into smaller pieces. C/U of a miner helping pieces of ore along a conveyor belt with a metal tool. Various views of ore being transported around the mine. It is poured into a container which is then lifted up a shaft to the surface. View of the metal tower with the container of ore being lifted then tipped. Large chunks of ore tumble down a slatted chute - seen from low angle. Interior - three men in flat caps move the chunks of ore with shovels. C/U of the ore being shovelled into a chute where water is poured on to the ore. It is then crushed. Various shots of machinery used to crush the ore. Man lifts off a board to show the wet ore being propelled through a machine. The powdered ore is washed. Shot of the beds of ore with water pouring off them. Man shovels wet ore from one vat to another. The ore is then dried in a calciner. C/U of man's hand opening a small door to show interior of calciner. Man with his mouth and nose covered with a protective mask shovels the powdered ore into a bucket then carries two buckets up some steps then pours them into a vat. A magnetic separator sifts the ore. C/U of the buckets being emptied. Highly magnetic iron, slightly magnetic iron and wolfram are sifted into different buckets. A larger amount of tin and waste emerges from the other end of the separator. Sand is then washed from the tin. A man shovels the powder into a machine which will wash it. C/U of man seen through the dripping water. Pan across the falling water to show the vat below where the sand is moved around through the water. C/U of two men in deep concentration as they use special tools to move the mixture around the vat. C/U of young boy at work. Two men work together shovelling the end product into a sack which is then weighed. C/U of small trowel of tin being put into the sack. Sack is loaded on to a trolley then wheeled away. History of Cornish Mining - Recent times - Modern Mines

03:39
Recent trip to abandoned tin mine 11th May. Very poor ground conditions here with loads of steel supports. Although Cornish mining is associate by many as hundred year old sites with granite engine houses, there were some modern ones. South Crofty, Geevor, Wheal Jane, Mount Wellington, Nangiles, Wheal Concord and Pendarves all have closed in more recent times and would have had the distinctive steel head gear similar to the coal pits of the North and Wales. Geevor Tin mine near St Just remains as a museum to this by gone age and is well worth a visit if on holiday in Cornwall as does Heartlands in Pool. All of these mines still hang in the balance as tin prices sore on the metal exchange due to high demand for solder, as lead can no longer be used. All music is my own creation, filming on GoPro3. World's Largest Cornish Pump | Jason Asselin

00:31
Located in Iron Mountain which is in Upper Michigan just north of Wisconsin. http://www.exploringthenorth.com/cornish/pump.html The Cornish Pump was featured in the History Channel's Modern Marvels Series on the World's Biggest Machines. Iron Mountain, MI is located on the Eastern Menominee Iron Ore Range. This entire area reflects the mining and logging heritage. One of the area landmarks is the Cornish Pump, the largest steam-driven pumping engine in the United States. The town of Iron Mountain began in 1879 with the discovery of the Chapin Mine, now considered one of the greatest iron mines in the world. Mines had been discovered all around the "iron mountain" but not like the Chapin. After exploration, it was discovered that the iron was over 6,100 feet wide and varied in depth from 50 to 150 feet. Part of the iron was found to be located under a cedar swamp. The Chapin mine was the wettest of the mines ever worked. At first, ground pumps were used to handle the seeping water, but as mining was done at deeper and deeper levels, the ground pumps were useless and the wetness caused serious problems. By 1889, the E. P. Allis Co. of Milwaukee (forerunner of the Allis-Chalmers Co.) was commissioned to design and build a pumping system to handle the mine's water. The Cornish pumping engine was placed in operation west of "D" Shaft of the Chapin Mine in January 1893, with a total expenditure of approximately $250,000. The pump itself cost $82,000. The 725-ton Cornish Pump was capable of pumping 3,400 gallons per minute, or 5,000,000 gallons each 24 hours from a depth of 1,500 feet. The Cornish Pump is named after the pumps which dewatered Cornwall's tin mines. The flywheel of the Cornish Pumping Engine is 40 feet in diameter and weighs 160 tons. The cylinders plus upper and lower cylinder heads weigh 60 tons. The engine stands 54 feet above the floor of the engine room. The Chapin Mine was the leading producer on the Menominee Iron Range. By 1890, Iron Mountain became known as "the payroll city of the north" employing from 1,800 to 2,000 men. In this year, a record 742,843 tons of ore were shipped out. In the years between 1880 and 1932, the mine produced 27,506,868 tons of iron ore. The mine was closed on August 1, 1932. Huge amounts of iron ore still remain in the ground, but the cost of mining the ore is prohibitive. When the mine closed and the pumps shut down in 1932, water rose up in the mine and filled two pits, one on each side of Stephenson Avenue (US 2). These bodies of water are known as the Chapin Pits, The Pit, or East and West Chapin Lake. In 1934, the Oliver Iron Mining Company offered the Cornish Pumping Engine to Dickinson County as a "relic for sightseers to visit". For years it stood outside until the museum was built around it in 1982-83 by the Menominee Range Historical Foundation. The Chapin Mine Pumping Engine was designated as a National Historic Mechanical Engineering Monument by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers on June 6, 1987. The Iron Mining Museum housing the Cornish Pump on the north side of Iron Mountain also contains the largest collection of underground mining equipment on display in the state of Michigan. Museum hours are 9 am to 5 pm Monday through Saturday and 12 noon to 4 pm on Sunday, from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Other times by appointment.

Geevor Tin Mine, formerly North Levant Mine is a tin mine in the far west of Cornwall, United Kingdom, between the villages of Pendeen and Trewellard. It was operational between 1911 and 1990 during which time it produced about 50,000 tons of black tin. It is now a museum and heritage centre left as a living history of a working tin mine. The museum is an Anchor Point of ERIH, The European Route of Industrial Heritage.[1] Since 2006, the mine has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape. http://www.geevor.com Please like, subscribe or comment below.
