Call for jobless mining engineer graduates to spearhead research revolution
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – A call was made on Tuesday for the current surfeit of highly trained but jobless South African mining engineering university graduates to be directed towards spearheading a research revolution involving the creation of mining clusters that have agriculture on waste mine land and mineral recovery from slimes dams as their economic underpin. Veteran mining research commentator Dr RE (Robbie) Robinson, the one-time National Institute for Metallurgy, now Mintek, director and serial commentator in the Journal of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM), makes the call in the attached Creamer Media’s Mining Weekly Online video interview.

Solving the missing miner problem
The Wits Mining Institute (WMI), Wits School of Electrical and Information and the Sustainable Communication Networks Laboratory at the University of Bremen in Germany collaborated in the design, development and testing of a technology for tracking miners trapped inside a collapsed underground mine, based on a scenario that assumes that the injured (missing) miners are not able to send distress calls. Wits demonstrated a prototype that showed promising initial results of this technology.

The First in SA to Roll Out Accredited BEngTech and Built Environment Bachelors Qualifications
In 2017, in line with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), Council of Higher Education’s (CHE) new Higher Education Quality Sub-Framework (HEQSF), and Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) requirements, the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FEBE) at University of Johannesburg will roll out its approved three year BEng Tech and Built Environment Bachelors qualifications. Consequently, most of FEBE’s National Diploma and BTech programmes will be phased out. The last intake of the three year National Diploma occurred in January 2016. We urge National Diploma graduates who have not registered or completed their BTech, to register and complete their degrees as soon as possible.
