Lamps with a porcelain electrode used a very high voltage source to light the flame. In this example, I have used an extra-high tension source that is low in current, safer for me, but it demonstrates how these lamps would have been lit in the past, just not so much arcing!

CAUTION: OPEN FLAME TYPE EXPERIMENT AND EQUIPMENT DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME! Example of a calcium carbide lamp as used in cave exploring or spelunking. This is a "British Made" Premier lamp that I had stored away with some caving equipment I used in my youth. I thought it might be of interest to anyone curious about acetylene lamps. These caving head lamps are good basic examples of acetylene lamps used about 100 years ago. Back then, an automobile might have been equipped with acetylene headlamps, hoses would run to an acetylene generator, perhaps on the running board. The acetylene generator would be a bigger version of the parts found in a caving head lamp and the operation would basically be the same. I forgot to mention the fun part, clean-up. After you're done, you have to take everything apart, clean out the spent carbide, wash everything off and make sure everything is well dried before putting it away. It's part of the charm of carbide lamps. Everything's so much easier with electric lamps! P.S. This is my first youtube video, so it's a bit rough,, sort of a "learning vehicle"

In this age of LED lights and smart phones it is easy to forget some of the magic of older technologies, The best example I can think of it the carbide light! Using calcium carbide and water to produce acetylene this amazing chemical reaction lit up the world! Many a mile of cave passage and tons of ore came to light under these lights before they were surpassed by electric ones. While their day may have passed I still like to drag em out and fire them up every now and then. Parts for cap lamps are still around check out Bob and Bob http://www.4bobandbob.com/

This is a lamp that uses petroleum spirit as a fuel and burns this as vapour, the lamp needs a short pre-heating to assist the production of vapour, once lit the seven flames tranfer the necessary heat to the internal wicking to continue the vapour production. I believe the lamp to be a product of Pigeon in France, famous for their 'Lampe Pigeon', they also run on petroleum spirit, modern car fuel gasoline/petrol is full of detergents and other gubbins which makes it unsuitable in this lamp, I use Zippo lighter fuel and it works perfectly.

You don’t know what you’re missing if you’ve never owned a Himalayan salt lamp. It’s like having an open window – a softly glowing natural source of fresh, clean air – on your desk, in your living room, next to the bed, or anywhere you choose to put it. Himalayan salt lamps are made from pure, food grade, Himalayan salt crystals and can even be powdered to use as salt in recipes if needed. These beautiful lamps have gained massive popularity recently and there are many benefits attributed to them. Here are some of the most popular benefits of using Himalayan salt lamp. 1.Neutralize Electromagnetic Radiation. Everyday appliances such as televisions, cell phones, computers and tablets release positive ions into the air constantly. These and other common electronics can cause an overflow of electromagnetic radiation which, although invisible, is believed to cause some serious long-term effects. Constant exposure to electromagnetic radiation is known primarily to cause fatigue, increase stress and weaken the immune system. Himalayan salt lamps emit negative ions and cancel out positive ones. Therefore, by neutralizing electromagnetic-radiation, they help reduce artificial frequencies and even prevent static buildup. 2.Cleanse, Deodorize, and Purify Air. Himalayan pink salt lamps help clean the air through an operation called Hygroscopy, which attracts and absorbs contaminated water molecules from the immediate environment and locks them into the salt crystal. The process has the amazing ability to remove cigarette smoke, dust and other contaminants from the air. This benefit is particularly popular, as salty air acts as an overall health booster and can help clear the air passages. 3.Better Sleep. Over-exposure to positive ions reduces the brain’s blood and oxygen supply, which can lead to irregular sleeping patterns. The negative ions from a Himalayan salt lamp are said to reverse this effect, making them a popular sleep-aid. Also, in direct relation to chromotherapy, the soothing light can help people who suffer from insomnia. Plants too can help. 4.Raise Energy Levels. Positive ions deplete the body of energy, and it is believed that Himalayan salt lamps can actually do the opposite. The negative ions increase energy levels, which yields a refreshing effect similar to the feeling of rejuvenation achieved from spending time in nature. 5.Boost Blood Flow. Particular studies have suggested that negative ions, such as those emitted by Himalayan salt lamps, can accelerate blood flow. This boost helps to improve several disorders of the vascular system and can prevent certain damage to the lungs. 6.Enhance Mood. Many studies suggest that negative ions improve mood and energy levels by increasing serotonin in the brain. Therefore, Himalayan salt lamps can benefit people suffering from seasonal affective disorder and other forms of depression. When it comes to buying Himalayan pink salt lamps, coverage is determined by the size of the crystal. Smaller lamps are good for the average bedroom, while larger lamp are better for spaces like the living room or den. On average, 1 lb of Himalayan Pink Salt crystal will cleanse the air in approximately a 4′ x 4′ area. This clip is from the training film, Koehler & Wolf Permissible Flame Safety Lamps, produced about 1973 by the US Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA). The film was used to train mine safety men about oxygen deficiency and provide a working knowledge of the flame safety lamp used to detect methane and oxygen deficiency. Prior to the invention of safety lamps, miners used candles with open flames. The use of small mammals or birds was used much later to warn of the presence of the deadly carbon monoxide present after underground fires or explosions, the so-called afterdamp. Such animals are much more susceptible to the gas, and will die before a human, so giving an early warning of the problem. The lack of good lighting was a prime cause of a painful eye affliction (nystagmus). Nowadays, safety lamps are mainly electric, and traditionally mounted on miners' helmets, sealed to prevent gas penetrating the casing and being ignited by electrical sparks. Although its use as a light source was superseded by electric lighting, the flame safety lamp had continued to be used in mines into recent years to detect methane and blackdamp, though modern mines now use sophisticated gas detectors for this purpose

SUBSCRIBE!: http://bit.ly/1G97GmA SHARE THIS VIDEO: https://youtu.be/dySoNCzsX5Q This question came in from my Nickipedia email [email protected], Willette Lewis asked the below Do the Himalayan salt lamps help you sleep and help with the air or did I just buy some really good cooking salt? Here’s what I found. Himalayan salt lamps are very interesting, first off there are in fact no salt mines in the Himalayas, which should give you an indication on how these giant salt chunks are more marketing than science. Most of the salt rocks are coming from Poland, Pakastian and India at least 190 miles from the actual Himalayas. This particular salt is made from 98% sodium chloride (or table salt) and 2 % other minerals with one of them being Iron Oxide (fancy word rust) which gives it the really cool pink color. After researching online I found that there are a ton of claims about Himalayan salt lamps. Some of these include 1) Neutralizing electromagnetic radiation 2) Purifying the air 3) Increasing energy levels 4) Helping you sleep better 5) Reducing stress 6) Doing your taxes The majority of these claims are rooted in positive and negative ions…so I shall explain The idea is that positive ions from electromagnetic radiation, which come from things, like your cell phone, TV, thunderstorms and cosmic waves from outer space are causing your body harm. In order to stop this harm we must neutralize the positive ions with negative ions, just like how antioxidants neutralize free radicals. Salt lamps are claiming to emit negative ions one a heat source like a light bulb is applied, however there is no empirical, statistical or scientific proof this is happening…at all. Also, to truly neutralize positive ion being emitted from electromagnetic radiation we would have to wrap ourselves a thick layer lead, like chainmail armor made of lead… which would be uncomfortable and probably end up causing lead poisoning. So that’s a no-go. The negative ion emission is also why salt lamps claim to increase energy levels, help you sleep better and reduce stress, but since they don’t emit negative ions, well these claims don’t add up to much. The other claim is that the salt lamps are purifying the air, which is said to be done through hygroscopy. This is a fancy word for “absorbing moisture”. The idea is that action of absorbing water molecules with contaminants inside of them will purify the air. While salt does have hygroscopic properties so does sugar, cotton, caramel, honey, sulfuric acid, ethanol (vodka), and…regular old table salt. So would it be fair to say your cotton shirt or salt lick for deer chilling on your coffee table is providing the same benefit? Adding to this there is no scientific data or evidence that a huge chunk of rock salt is particularly good at using hygroscopic properties to filter the air. Under the same justification methodology your couch is pulling the equivalent contaminated moisture out of the air… but moisture in the air isn’t necessarily a bad thing either. This is in fact why we install humidifiers during the cold and dry months. An article from the Mayo Clinic states :Increased humidity may ease breathing in children and adults who have asthma or allergies, especially during a respiratory infection such as a cold But don’t toss your pink table salt lamp quite yet! Research published in the journal of consumer psychology states that the intensity of light is directly related to degree of a person’s emotional response. What this means is that if your salt lamp is providing a warm soft glow this type of light can reduce the intensity of high stress emotions leading to a feeling of relaxation and calm. Watch more Home Decor & Lighting videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/173-How-to-Rewire-a-Lamp You flick the switch and... everything's not illuminated? It may be your lamp needs a quick overhaul. Hey, lighten up, we're here to help. Step 1: Strip down lamp Unplug the lamp and remove its shade, harp, and bulb. Step 2: Remove covering With the folded blanket or towel beneath it, turn the lamp on its side and peel back or remove any felt covering the base. Step 3: Loosen screw Turn the lamp right side up and look for a screw at the base of the socket. If there is one, loosen it with the screwdriver. Some older sockets simply screw on to the lamp top and just need to be unscrewed. For some lamps it may be necessary to unscrew and take out the knob in order to unscrew the socket. Step 4: Cut socket Pull the socket up about 6 inches above the lamp and cut the cord where it emerges from the bottom of the socket. Throw the socket away. Step 5: Cut cord If it seems like threading the new cord up through the lamp will be difficult, tie a knot in the old cord where it sticks out at the top, then cut the cord about 10 inches from the bottom of the lamp. Tip If threading the new cord up through the lamp won't be difficult, don't tie a knot—simply turn the lamp on its side, pull out the old cord, and thread through the new cord. Then skip ahead to Step 9. Step 6: Strip wire & cord At the cut end of the old cord, pull apart the two strands for about 2 inches. Use the stripper tool on your wire cutter to strip about half an inch of insulation from each end, exposing each wire. Do the same with the end of the new cord. Tip If you don't have a pair of wire cutters and strippers handy, use a sharp pair of scissors to gently score the outer coating of insulation all the way around each wire and then pull it off. Step 7: Splice ends Twist—or "splice"—the exposed ends of the old cord around the exposed ends of the new cord, and wrap the splice tightly with electrical tape.Don't use so much tape that the splice ends up wider than the opening it needs to fit through. Step 8: Throw away cord Pull the old cord out through the top of the lamp until the splice emerges and the new cord is about 6 inches above the top of the lamp. Snip the electrical tape, undo the splice, and throw away the old cord. Step 9: Take apart socket Take the new socket apart by pinching the top part—or "shell"—near the base and twisting it free. Step 10: Knot strands Pass the two strands of cord up through the socket base, and tie an "Underwriters Knot" by making a loop with each strand of the split cord, looping away from where the strands meet, then passing the end of each strand through the opposite loop and pulling tight. Step 11: Wrap wire Determine which strand of wire is smooth, with no ribs—this is the "hot" or "positive" wire. Loosen the brass screw of the new socket and wrap the "hot" wire once around it. Make sure the edge of the insulation is right up against the screw and no excess wire is sticking out past it. Tighten the screw to hold the wire in place. Step 12: Wrap other wire Wrap the other (ribbed) wire—also known as the "neutral" wire—under the other screw and tighten. Step 13: Reassemble socket Reassemble the socket by twisting the shell back onto the base. Pull the cord from the bottom of the lamp until the socket is back in place, then tighten the base screw to secure it. Step 14: Re-affix covering Re-affix the felt covering by lining the exposed part of the base with hot glue and pressing the felt back into place. Tip If you completely removed the felt you can create a new covering to replace it. Using the lamp base as a guide, cut the felt into the right shape, then glue it to the base. Step 15: Screw in bulb Screw in a light bulb, replace the harp and the shade, plug in your "new" lamp... and bask in the glow of your success. Did You Know? Indoor lights and light bulbs were widely available by 1900, but most homes weren't wired for electricity until the 1920s and '30s.

Today I'm reviewing the Olight H1R NOVA for Bushcraft use. I Throw it off rocks, stick it in a freezing cold river then show all the features it has and try to demonstrate how bright it is. My only criticism is that it doesn't have a red light function, but its not something I use a lot and I'd rather they kept it nice and lightweight (51.5g). So far I'm very happy with this headtorch and appreciate the attention to detail put into it, if you get one you won't be disappointed. If you like the video please hit the thumbs up button and make sure you've Subscribed. Thanks. If you're interested in the H1R Nova https://www.olightstore.uk/olight-h1r-nova-headlamp
