OpenSSL

11:54
OpenSSL is an open-source implementation of the SSL and TLS protocols. The core library, written in the C programming language, implements basic cryptographic functions and provides various utility functions. Wrappers allowing the use of the OpenSSL library in a variety of computer languages are available. Versions are available for most Unix-like operating systems (including Solaris, Linux, Mac OS X and the various open source BSD operating systems), OpenVMS and Microsoft Windows. IBM provides a port for the System i (OS/400). OpenSSL is based on SSLeay by Eric Andrew Young and Tim Hudson, development of which unofficially ended on December 17, 1998, when Young and Hudson both started to work for RSA Security. This video is targeted to blind users. Attribution: Article text available under CC-BY-SA Creative Commons image source in video

How do we know our PRNGs work properly? (33c3)

58:36
https://media.ccc.de/v/33c3-8099-how_do_we_know_our_prngs_work_properly Pseudo-random number generators (PRNGs) are critical pieces of security infrastructure. Yet, PRNGs are surprisingly difficult to design, implement, and debug. The PRNG vulnerability that we recently found in GnuPG/Libgcrypt (CVE-2016-6313) survived 18 years of service and several expert audits. In this presentation, we not only describe the details of the flaw but, based on our research, explain why the current state of PRNG implementation and quality assurance downright provokes incidents. We also present a PRNG analysis method that we developed and give specific recommendations to implementors of software producing or consuming pseudo-random numbers to ensure correctness. The Hidden World of Crypto - The Linux Cryptography API Part II

43:14
The Linux kernel has a rich and modular cryptographic API that is used extensively by familiar user facing software such as Android. It's also cryptic, badly documented, subject to change and can easily bite you in unexpected and painful ways. This talk will describe the crypto API, provide some usage example and discuss some of the more interesting in-kernel users, such as DM-Crypt, DM-Verity and the new file system encryption code. Slides available at: https://www.slideshare.net/kerneltlv/linux-kernel-cryptographic-api-and-use-cases Gilad Ben-Yossef is a principal software engineer at ARM. He works on the kernel security sub-system and the ARM CryptCell engine. Open source work done by Gilad includes an experiment in integration of network processors in the networking stack, a patch set for reducing the interference caused to user space processes in large multi-core systems by Linux kernel “maintenance” work and on SMP support for the Synopsys Arc processor among others. Gilad has co-authored O’Reilly’s “Building Embedded Linux Systems” 2nd edition and presented at such venues as Embedded Linux Conference Europe and the Ottawa Linux Symposium, as well as co-founded Hamakor, an Israeli NGO for the advancement for Open Source and Free Software in Israel. When not hacking on kernel code you can find Gilad meditating and making dad jokes on Twitter.

SSL and Shared servers interconnected

http://ideastackhosting.com In TLS encryption, the server must select and send the certificate based on the destination IP address, before it reads the domain name in the HTTP request. Thus when in a virtual hosting environment, it presents the wrong certificate(usually default for the server) and causes the browser to warn the user of a mismatch in name. An extension to TLS called Server Name Indication(SNI), addresses this issue by sending the name of the virtual domain as part of the TLS negotiation. This enables the server to "switch" to the correct virtual domain early and present the browser with the certificate containing the correct CN (Common Name).
