How does a Hammer Mill Works - Mineral Processing
LIKE, SHARE & Subscribe. Description: Hammer mill- The hammers are made from manganese steel or, more recently, nodular cast iron, containing chromium carbide, which is extremely abrasion resistant. The breaker plates are made of the same material. The hammers are pivoted so that they can move out of the path of oversize material, or tramp metal, entering the crushing chamber. Pivoted hammers exert less force than they would if rigidly attached, so they tend to be used on smaller impact crushers or for crushing soft material. The exit from the mill is perforated, so that material which is not broken to the required size is retained and swept up again by the rotor for further impacting. This type of machine is designed to give the particles velocities of the order of that of the hammers. Fracture is either due to the severity of impact with the hammers or to the subsequent impact with the casing or grid. Since the particles are given very high velocities, much of the size reduction is by attrition, i.e. breaking of particle on particle, and this leads to little control on product size and a much higher proportion of fines than with compressive crushers. The hammers can weigh over 100 kg and can work on feed up to 20 cm. The speed of the rotor varies between 500 and 3000rev min -~. Due to the high rate of wear on these machines (wear can be taken up by moving the hammers on the pins) they are limited in use to relatively non-abrasive materials. They have extensive use in limestone quarrying and in the crushing of coal. A great advantage in quarrying is in the fact that they produce a very good cubic product. Hammer mills have been used by Australian coking coal producers to prepare coke oven feeds (0.125-6 mm). To assist in the beneficiation of coke oven feeds, recent work has led to the development of a model of the swing hammer mill (Shi et al., 2003). The energy-based model comprises a mechanistic model for the mill power draw and a perfect mixing mill model with a dual-classification function to describe the operation of the hammers and underscreen. The model is able to accurately predict the product size distribution and power draw for given hammer mill configurations (breaker gap, under-screen orientation, screen aperture) and operating conditions (feed rate, feed size distribution, and coal breakage characteristics). Black Pearl Farm
Explore Rangiroa's black pearl industry, learn about pearl cultivation and shop for unset black pearls during this memorable visit to the Black Pearl Farm. Depart the pier for the drive along Rangiroa's main road, past the airport and on to the Black Pearl Farm. Most pearl farms are small-sized, and the number of workers at this farm is quite representative of the farms in this region. Upon arrival at the farm, the staff will give you a brief lecture about the farming and production of black pearls. You will learn about the chronology and evolution of the industry, and how oysters are selected, grown and then grafted for production. Following the lecture, you will proceed to the work sheds where oysters are sorted and cleaned, and watch a grafter at work as he skillfully plies his trade. The highlight of the excursion will be an opportunity to view a selection of unset black pearls that are available for purchase. Here, your guide will show you the criteria for grading pearls in terms of quality. The shape and luster are very important. You will see the round, baroque and semi-baroque pearls ranging in grades from C to A. Following your visit, you will re-board your mini-van for the return drive to the pier. Please note: This tour is for guests who are interested in learning about pearl cultivation, or for those shopping for unset black pearls. The prices are fixed; cash, Visa or MasterCard are accepted. The Black Pearl Farm is closed on Sundays. The Tuamotus are very remote islands. Although the guides used are the best available, they are not certified and their command of English may be very poor. Your patience and understanding is greatly appreciated.

Bulls, Bears & Brokers: Alto Capital's Tony Locantro on Australia's booming gold sector
Tony Locantro, stock market commentator and investment manager at Alto Capital, discusses the outlook for Australia's gold sector and an increasing level of M+A in the space. ''In Australia our property sector is due for a nasty correction and the bank stocks have been struggling for about four years now''. ''What I noticed today was that the Dow dropped 800 points ... all the major gold producers were actually up for the day ... so I think the Australian gold scene is doing quite well especially when you can produce at $1000 all-in-sustaining and sell for about $1686. ''Our gold sector I think is in great shape''.
Glencore confirms sale of mines in Australia and Chile
Embattled mining giant Glencore said it has started the sales process for two of its copper mines in Australia and Chile. The firm's Australian copper mine in Cobar, New South Wales, and its Lomas Bayas copper mine in the Atacama desert in Chile are for sale. Glencore is attempting to reduce $30bn (£19.5bn) of debt created by its 2013 takeover of Xstrata. Its Hong Kong-listed shares have also fallen some 55% this year. Trading of the firm's Hong Kong-listed shares were halted earlier on Monday ahead of the announcement. "The sale process is in response to Glencore receiving a number of unsolicited expressions of interest for these mines from various potential buyers," the firm said in an email. "This will allow potential buyers to bid to purchase either one or both of the mines and may or may not result in a sale," it added. The Cobar operation is a high-grade underground mine and plant, while the Lomas Bayas operation is a low-cost, open pit mine. In Australia, Glencore has 19 mining complexes across the country, including coal, copper, nickel and zinc operations, port facilities, offices and agricultural businesses, among others. It is one of the biggest exporters of Australian grain. In Chile, Glencore owns and has stakes in several mines, as well as a hydro-power project. Last week, the firm announced it would dramatically cut its zinc production. The move comes amid a 30% fall in the price of zinc in recent months. The company said it would cut 500,000 tonnes of zinc production - or 4% of the world's total supply. Most of the zinc-related cutbacks will be in Australia, where more than 500 jobs will be lost, as well as South America and Kazakhstan. As it attempts to reduce its debt, the firm has also cut copper production and suspended dividend payments to shareholders. It is also issuing new shares to raise money.

Diamonds Reveal Secrets of the Earth
(Inside Science) -- To many people, diamonds are a symbol of eternity, strength and everlasting love. No other gem expresses human emotion more powerfully than a diamond. But these earth-grown, precious and nearly indestructible stones aren’t always sought after for their perfect color, cut and clarity to sit on an adoring finger. Scientists see diamonds in a completely different light -- not all for their beauty and perfections, but for their imperfections. Steve Shirey is a geologist working with diamonds, but not necessarily pretty diamonds you want on your finger. Locked inside the diamonds he works on are very tiny minerals. He’s learned through his career to be ultra-careful when handling such small things. “These are small materials. They’re unique specimens. I had a specimen, a beautiful specimen on the stage once, and I sneezed and it was gone,” said Steve Shirey, Carnegie Institution of Washington. Luckily Shirey has more diamonds left to work with. He’s one of a very select group of people in the world who look at diamonds, not mainly for their intrinsic beauty, but for their faults and imperfections -- called mineral inclusions. “These are seen as flaws in the jewelry industry and so the gem trade will actually map out these flaws,” said Shirey. “When we want to pick diamonds for research, we actually look for diamonds with the biggest, best, most fancy inclusions that we can find, because those will be the ones that we want to study for the stories that the mineral inclusions will reveal,” said Shirey. We see these inclusions, or minerals, as tiny specks sealed within a diamond. Shirey says these preserved mineral fragments hold information that tell stories of Earth’s early history. “One of the beauties of having diamonds enclosing minerals that come from deep in the Earth’s mantle, is that diamond is almost a perfect container. It has very, very low diffusivity, meaning it’s very good at keeping the surrounding fluids and high-pressure compounds in the mantle from getting into the inclusion and altering it,” said Shirey. The diamonds Shirey examines come from kimberlite volcanic rock. The rock comes from deep in the earth’s mantle and gets carried to the surface, through a volcanic eruption. During eruptions, kimberlitic magma that contains diamonds shoots rapidly up to the earth’s surface. When this happens, small amounts of diamonds can be found throughout kimberlite that ends up at the surface. “The diamonds are very rare even in a diamondiferous kimberlite. So, most of what you’re mining is not diamonds. Diamonds are at a part per billion level in the kimberlite,” said Shirey. Shirey uses diamonds as a means to sample the earth’s deep mantle. He looks at rare diamonds that contain specific sulfide minerals. He then painstakingly removes these tiny mineral grains -- or inclusions -- and analyzes their contents, to determine ages that can be on the order of billions of years. “Rocks and minerals have a story to tell us. With regard to diamonds, what we’ve done in many cases is try to relate the place that diamonds grow deep in the keels beneath continents, to the processes by which the continents grew to begin with, or the continents collided during long-ago processes like ancient plate tectonics or ancient continental collision,” said Shirey. The tiny mineral specks trapped inside a diamond can tell researchers a lot about the temperature and pressure conditions when a diamond formed, as well as about the rocks and fluids it grew from. Plus, from its age scientists can tell if it formed at the same time as its diamond host container. “So, what we can learn from mineral inclusions in diamonds about the earth is quite profound. So, one of the things that we learn is how and when ancient continental collision like that which occurred during plate tectonic cycles may have begun in a way similar to what we see going on today,” said Shirey. “What has become more interesting -- a more interesting message for me to get across recently is that the diamonds give us such a great sample of the deep earth that diamonds not only are forever, but they’re telling you unique features about the earth,” concluded Shirey. Questions Without Notice: Trade - Australian exports
Mr SUKKAR (Deakin) (14:22): My question is to the Minister for Trade and Investment. Will the minister update the House on the vital contribution that Australian exporters make to our economy across a wide range of areas and the importance of recognising their efforts? Mr ROBB (Goldstein—Minister for Trade and Investment) (14:22): I acknowledge the accomplished private-sector career of the member, which has given him a strong trade and investment understanding. Australian exports have been a major reason why Australia has enjoyed 24 years of uninterrupted economic growth. In fact, through to June this year, exports contributed 1.4 to 2.4 per cent growth. We have got some wonderful and innovative exporters out there, and their efforts were celebrated on Friday night at the 53rd Australian Export Awards in Melbourne. From 74 finalists there were 12 category winners. The finalists generated more than $1.9 billion in export sales in 2014-15 and employ more than 16½ thousand Australians. Victoria's ANCA, manufacturers of innovative advanced machinery—high-tech tool and cutter grinders—were named Exporter of the Year and also won the manufacturing category. They are based in Bayswater North, bordering the member's and the Speaker's electorates, and recently hired 160 new employees to meet the increased demand for their products. In 2014-15, ANCA achieved 39 per cent growth in export sales, with revenue exceeding $197 million. ANCA—exporting to Germany, the US, Japan, China, the UK and many more—are living proof that Australia has a healthy future, with knowledge-based manufacturing of innovative, high-quality products. The other category winners were—and I think they should be recognised in this place—agribusiness: Austral Fisheries, WA; business services: Nuix, New South Wales; creative industries: Alt.vfx, Queensland; environmental solutions: Rubicon Water, Victoria; health and biotechnology: Blackmores—and what a year they have had; information and communication technology: Soprano Design; minerals, energy and related services: Blast Movement Technologies, Queensland; online sales: Halfbrick Studios, Queensland; regional exporter: Tasmanian Quality Meats; and small business: b.box for kids in Victoria. The free trade agreements we have concluded with Korea, Japan and China, as well as the transformational Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement, are unlocking unprecedented access to major markets for our exporters, and we have been and are a proud trading nation. To the winners of the Australian Export Awards, along with other category finalists: we salute you.

Today News - AUD/USD analysis: US-China tensions undermine Aussie
Today News - AUD/USD analysis: US-China tensions undermine Aussie Escalating trade war sent AUD/USD to its lowest since February 2016. Chinese trade balance released over the weekend could weigh on the weekly opening. The AUD/USD pair collapsed Friday to close the week at 0.7104, its lowest since February 2016, as the Aussie is sensitive to China-negative headlines, given that the second worlds largest economy is the major trade partner of the mining-based economy. Dollars broad strength and falling equities, added to Aussies slump after US President Trump tol... Why higher wages do not create price inflation
It is increased spending due to credit expansion that is causing price inflation in Australia. Not the mining boom or an economy operating at near "full capacity/employment" etc. A response to an article that appeared in the Financial Review, 15th Sept 2010, "Wage Risks in Economy Test RBA." Oil spikes, shorting Gold and going with the grain
http://goo.gl/0pR9ID Saxo Bank's Head of Commodity Strategy Ole Hansen gives us his weekly round up of the markets, concentrating on oil, gold and crops. Oil saw a 6% rise this week after Saudi Arabia launched airstrikes on Yemen but the spike was short-lived and prices fell back. Ole argues that the market reaction simply reflects the usual response to Middle East instability: an initial knee-jerk jump then calm when a conflict flares but doesn't spread. Gold has been finding support amid the Yemen crisis and USD weakness but a return of the dollar bulls could lead to a correction and Ole's trade tip is to short gold. US farmers reveal their planting plans for the year at the end of March with a strong USD appearing to result in a reduction of wheat planting because exports become more expensive to sell.
Japan to boost investment in Australia
Westpac senior currency strategist Sean Callow discusses Japan's intention to increase its offshore investment in resources and agriculture.
Washingtons Working Port; Port of Longview
As one of the first ports in the state of Washington, the Port of Longview has long prided itself on its hard working labor force and deep roots in the state’s blue collar industries. A collection of hardy longshoremen, millwrights and other laborers and operators who work hard and play hard, thinking up custom solutions and innovations that ultimately help businesses thrive. Supported by a team that’s not afraid to get their hands dirty, when there is work to be done, its all hands on deck – literally and figuratively – at Washington's Working Port.

Bruce Cooper discusses why we remain an attractive global destination for foreign investment
The outlook for Australia and its economy is optimistic, with a strong pipeline of opportunities for inbound investment. But if you're an overseas investor, or an international law firm with clients transacting in Australia, you can only take advantage of those opportunities when you know the State of Play in Australia: the key market trends and latest developments in foreign investment, regulation, restructuring and disputes. To learn more about the state of play of the Australian market: https://www.claytonutz.com/about/international-services/australian-market-the-state-of-play ._________________________________________________ You can also find this video on our website https://www.claytonutz.com/knowledge/video/bruce-cooper-discusses-why-we-remain-an-attractive-global-destination-for-foreign-investment See more videos from Clayton Utz here https://www.claytonutz.com/videohub/ Follow us on Social Media https://www.linkedin.com/company/clayton-utz https://twitter.com/claytonutz Transcript The current landscape for a business in Australia is remarkably optimistic. We don't expect to see a great deal of deviation from it which we've seen in the past, so accordingly mining, mining infrastructure and mining investment will continue to be a catalyst for inbound investment. But we also think that in the energy space, renewal energy (particularly solar and wind and, to a lesser extent, certainly hydro and battery storage) will continue to be a driver in that area as well. Australia's position as one of the top 10 producers of agricultural products will continue to drive growth. Protein ‒ both meat and fish ‒ as well as grain and other horticultural products will be very large on the horizon for inbound investment. In that respect, watch out for the development of the Northern Territory and the Australian Government's and the Northern Territory Government's push into agriculture in that state. Australia of course continues to be a major tourism destination but the differential between the number of tourists inbound and hotel rooms means that there's a significant amount of leisure property investment which we'll see driving parts of certainly the East Coast and the West Coast of Australia to cater for that inbound leisure and tourism development. Australia's financial institution and its financial system is one of the Asia-Pacific's largest. You'll see a number of big Australian financial institutions continue to analyse exactly what its core propositions are and you'll see some Aussie financial institutions start to divest some non-core assets. Australia's superannuation and funds under management industry, which is currently standing at about $2.1 trillion, is slated over the next 15 years to grow to around about $7.5 trillion. Coming out of that you'll see significant opportunities as Australian fund managers look for investment opportunities, both at home but more importantly on income-producing assets abroad. So looking forward, we'll continue to see active balance sheet management by large Australian companies and the 22,000 foreign entities that are operating in Australia. We'll see an expectation of a 75% to 80% level of the Australian dollar against the US dollar continue to throw up opportunities, both greenfield and brownfield, in sectors we talked about previously. Given Australia's relatively benign foreign investment regime, and given the pipeline of extensive opportunities across the sectors we've talked about, Australia still remains one of the more attractive global destinations for foreign investment.

Westward Expansion: Crash Course US History #24
In which John Green teaches you about the Wild, Wild, West, which as it turns out, wasn't as wild as it seemed in the movies. When we think of the western expansion of the United States in the 19th century, we're conditioned to imagine the loner. The self-reliant, unattached cowpoke roaming the prairie in search of wandering calves, or the half-addled prospector who has broken from reality thanks to the solitude of his single-minded quest for gold dust. While there may be a grain of truth to these classic Hollywood stereotypes, it isn't a very big grain of truth. Many of the pioneers who settled the west were family groups. Many were immigrants. Many were major corporations. The big losers in the westward migration were Native Americans, who were killed or moved onto reservations. Not cool, American pioneers. America’s Westward expansion was fueled by both Manifest Destiny and a desire to grow the nation and its resources — though at a cost: https://www.commonlit.org/texts/manifest-destiny As Americans continued to stream West on the name of Manifest Destiny, American Indians saw their lives changed forever as they moved from practising resistance to lives on reservations: https://www.commonlit.org/texts/from-resistance-to-reservations

South Africa In Technical Recession
South Africa has officially entered a technical recession, after Stats SA announced on Tuesday that the country's real gross domestic product had decreased by 0.7% in the second quarter of the year.  This follows a GDP contraction of 2.2% in the first quarter. A technical recession is two consecutive quarters of negative growth. The first quarter's GDP contraction has now also been revised upward to -2.6%. This is SA's first recession since the 2008/2009 global financial crisis.  Shortly after the economic data release at 11:30, the rand piled on losses against the dollar, falling to a daily low of R15.23/$, down 2.4% on the day.  Ahead of the announcement in Pretoria, analysts at FNB had been cautiously optimistic that SA could avoid a recession, but said it would be a 'close call'.  The ABSA Purchasing Manager's index for August, meanwhile, released Monday came in at a 13-month low. Agriculture takes a hit The largest negative contributors to GDP growth were the agriculture industry  - which decreased by a whopping 29.2%, followed by the transport industry (-4.9%) and trade (-1.9%). "This [decrease in agriculture] was largely driven by a decline in the production of field crops and horticultural products," said Stats SA in a media statement. "Continued drought conditions in Western Cape and a severe hailstorm in Mpumalanga, resulting in extensive crop damage, also placed additional pressure on production in the second quarter." The main positive contributors were mining, up 4.9% and the finance, real estate and business services industry, which increased 1.9%. For the first time since Q1 2016, households also cut consumption expenditure, which decreased by 1.3% for the quarter. The biggest cuts were recorded for spending on transport, food and drinks, according to Stats SA.  Government expenditure, meanwhile, grew by 0.7%. Total investment, also known as gross fixed capital formation, decreased by 0.5%. Net exports contributed positively to growth in GDP through expenditure. Exports were up 13.7% for the quarter due to increased trade in precious metals, mineral products and vegetable products. Imports increased by 3.1% and were driven by imports of mineral products, prepared foodstuffs, beverages and tobacco and vehicles and transport equipment, according to Stats SA. In August, President Cyril Ramaphosa punted his initiative to attract investment as a remedy to boost economic growth to members of Parliament. Cabinet is also working on a stimulus package to reignite growth. The SA Reserve Bank has estimated that the GDP growth would average at 1.2% in 2018, which may now need to be revised downwards.
