Gondwana Coal Gondwana coal makes up to 98 per cent of the total reserves and 99 per cent of the production of coal in India. Satpuras, denudation [weathering + erosion] has exposed coal bearing Gondwana strata. The carbon content in Gondwana coal [250 million years old] is less compared to the Carboniferous coal [350 million years old][Almost Absent in India] because of its much younger age. Gondwana coal forms India’s metallurgical grade as well as superior quality coal. The Damuda series (i.e. Lower Gondwana) possesses the best worked coalfields accounting for 80 per cent of the total coal production in India. 80 out of 113 Indian coalfields are located in the rock systems of the Damuda series [lower Gondwana Age]. Coking as well as non-coking and bituminous as well as sub-bituminous coal are obtained from Gondwana coal fields. Anthracite is generally not found in the Gondwana coal fields. The volatile compounds and ash (usually 13 – 30 per cent) and doesn’t allow Carbon percentage to rise above 55 to 60 per cent. [It requires few million years more if the quality has to get better. Remember Gondwana coal is 100 million years younger than Carboniferous coal]. Gondwana coal is free from moisture, but it contains Sulphur and Phosphorous. These basins occur in the valleys of certain rivers viz., the Damodar (Jharkhand-West Bengal); the Mahanadi (Chhattisgarh-Odisha); the Son (Madhya Pradesh Jharkhand); the Godavari and the Wardha (Maharashtra-Andhra Pradesh); the Indravati, the Narmada, the Koel, the Panch, the Kanhan and many more. Distribution of Gondwana Coal in India First coal mine was opened in 1774 at Raniganj in West Bengal. Coal industry was nationalized in 1973-74. [The present government made some serious changes during the last year [2015] by allowing private sector to play a bigger role in coal production]. India is now the third largest coal producer in the world after China and the USA. Coal industry provides employment to nearly seven lakh persons. Gondwana Coalfields == exclusively found in the Peninsular plateau of India. Classification of Coal in India On the basis of the age of coal formation, coal reserves in India can be classified into two types – Gondwana and Tertiary. Gondwana coal is mainly found in the river basin of the Damodar, Mahanadi, Godavari and Wardha. Most of the coal of India is of this type. The coal is very old and is of much better quality and includes the coking and non-coking bituminous coal. More than 90% of the total coal reserve and production in India is of Gondwana type. The Tertiary coal is younger in age. Tertiary group mainly includes two types – sub-bituminous and lignite. The Tertiary coal has low carbon and high percentage of moisture and sulphur. Gondwana coal fields i). These mines are the main producers of coal in India. ii). These are more than 200 million years old. iii). These produce good quality of coal. iv). Gondwana coal occurs in Damodar valley, the Godavari, Mahanadi, Son and the Wardha valley. Teritary Coal fields i). These are the minor producers of coal in India. ii). These are only 55 million years old. iii). These produce a poor quality of coal. iv). Teritary coal occurs in the north eastern states of Meghalaya, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland. According to quality (carbon content), the coal may be divided into following classes: 1. Anthracite: It is the best quality coal and its carbon content is as much as 92% with a low volatile matter and very little moisture. It is hard and heavy and burns with great heat. 2. Bituminous: It is also of good quality coal next to Anthracite. It’s carbon content is up to 85%. Coal mined in India, is mainly of bituminous type of Gondwana age. 3. Lignite: It is inferior quality coal, full of moisture and volatile matter. Its carbon content is less than 50%. It is also known as ‘brown coal’. 4. Peat: It is the first stage in the formation of coal. It is light and woody and has poor heating capacity. Gondwana coal makes up to 98 per cent of the total reserves and 99per cent of the production of coal in India. Satpuras, denudation[weathering + erosion] has exposed coal bearing Gondwana strata.

What is the Meghalayan Age?

03:09
The time we are living in right now has been named the Meghalayan age. But why has the current era of time been named after a state in India? How do we decide when a new chapter in the geologic history of time has begun and ended, and why do geologists cut time into different slices in the first place? -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "The Kanwars : Infamous Shiv Bhakts of North India, Bharat Ek Mauj, Season 2 E1 " https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01w0jBWPu3Q -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Dip and Strike in Hindi with animation Geology Mining | India | apparent dip | true dip

10:08
Here I have tried to clear basic concept of Dip and Strike terms with animation os seam, apparent dip, and true dip is also introduced in this video. This is also important in Winning and Working Geologic structures are usually the result of the powerful tectonic forces that occur within the earth. The strike is defined as the direction of the line formed by the intersection of a fault, bed or other planar feature and a horizontal plane. A strike is a compass direction on a map view. The dip is defined as the angle at which a planar feature is inclined to the horizontal plane. The dip is perpendicular to strike and measured downward. When a vertical cross-section is perpendicular to the strike of the beds, the inclination is seen in the cross section is called the true dip. Any angle of dip other than the true dip is called is called an apparent dip. And the direction is called apparent dip direction. The amount of apparent dip is always less than the true dip. The true dip always one of any bed but the apparent dips are many. If you have any doubt regarding this topic, comment below. You can subscribe our channel for more updates "MinVideo" at YouTube.

ONGC : Oil and Natural Gas Commission of India

07:55
Since its inception, ONGC has been instrumental in transforming the country's limited upstream sector into a large viable playing field, with its activities spread throughout India and significantly in overseas territories. In the inland areas, ONGC not only found new resources in Assam but also established new oil province in Cambay basin (Gujarat), while adding new petroliferous areas in the Assam-Arakan Fold Belt and East coast basins (both inland and offshore). ONGC went offshore in early 70's and discovered a giant oil field in the form of Bombay High, now known as Mumbai High. This discovery, along with subsequent discoveries of huge oil and gas fields in Western offshore changed the oil scenario of the country. Subsequently, over 5 billion tonnes of hydrocarbons, which were present in the country, were discovered. The most important contribution of ONGC, however, is its self-reliance and development of core competence in E&P activities at a globally competitive level. Today, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (ONGC) is, the leader in Exploration & Production (E&P) activities in India contributing 72 per cent to India’s total production of crude oil and 48 per cent of natural gas. ONGC’s quest for energy goes deeper than setting new benchmarks in deep-water drilling in the Krishna Godavari Basin or finding new frontiers of energy. Global decline in crude prices notwithstanding, we have taken significant investment decisions diligently and aggressively, reversing the production trend in offshore. And now we are venturing into deeper offshore plays in our quest for energy security. It is this journey that has placed us among Fortune “World’s Most Admired Companies” and ranked us 3rd in the E&P industry globally on the Platts Top 250 Rankings 2014. This footage is part of the professionally-shot broadcast stock footage archive of Wilderness Films India Ltd., the largest collection of HD imagery from South Asia. The focus will be on technologies for deep-sea mining, underwater vehicles, underwater robotics and ocean climate change advisory services, among other aspects.   Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India is all set to launch ‘Deep Ocean Mission’ by January 2018. This will improve India’s position in ocean research field. Shri M Rajeevan, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences announced. Secretary was speaking through video conference in the workshop arranged by National Institute of Oceanography, Dona Paula. Shri M S Nagar, Member Standing Committee, Ministry of Earth Science, Dr VSN Murthy, Director, National Institute of Oceanography were also present at the inauguration of the workshop on ‘Three decades of India acquiring Pioneer Investor Status- Achievements and way forward’. India achieved a lot in the field of ocean research; still it is long way to go, said Secretary M Rajeevan on this occasion.  The program on Poly metallic nodules was initiated at CSIR-NIO with the collection of the first nodule sample from Arabian Sea on board the first Research Vessel Gaveshani on 26 January 1981. India was the first country in the world to have been given the Pioneer Area for exploration of deep-sea mineral viz. Polymetallic nodules in the Central Indian Ocean Basin in 1987. This was based on the extensive surveys carried out by the scientists of CSIR-NIO, on several research ships leading to the allocation of an area of 150,000 sq km to the country with exclusive rights under the UN Law of the sea.  Subsequently, Environment Impact Assessment studies for nodule mining by CSIR-NIO, development of metal extraction process by CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory, Jamshedpur and CSIR- Institute for Minerals and Metals Technology, Bhubaneswar and development of mining technology by National Institute of Ocean Technology, Chennai, have been taken up under the national program on Polymetallic nodules funded by Ministry of Earth Sciences.  Based on the resource evaluation, India has now retained an area of 75,000 sq km with an estimated resource of about 100 million tons of strategic metals such Copper,Nickel, Cobalt besides Manganese and Iron. A First Generation Mine-site (FGM) with an area of 18,000 sq km has been identified. Latest technologies for extraction of metals from the minerals have also been developed under the programme. Detailed environmental data has been collected for compliance with International Seabed Authorities requirements. Besides identifying the mineral resource and developing technologies for mining and extraction, the programme has also resulted in high impact research as well as manpower development.  Subscribe my channel https://www.youtube.com/c/FUTUREUNIVERSE2017?sub_confirmation=1 Website :http://www.futureuniverse.in/ http://www.tamiludayam.in/ Google+ https://plus.google.com/+FUTUREUNIVERSE Instagram https://www.instagram.com/futureuniverse2017/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/Maghizhan Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/Future-Universe-1768439153226746/ Facebook https://www.facebook.com/jayanudayan Linked In https://www.linkedin.com/in/future-universe-75391423/ Tumblr https://futureuniverse2017.tumblr.com Pinterest https://www.pinterest.com/FUTUREUNIVERSE/ My Laptop Amazon : http://amzn.to/2gD5MpB

Minerals and Energy Resources Class 10 S.St Minerals And Energy Resources In Hindi Part 4 discuss the causes of Minerals and Energy Resources class 10 explain the significance ofMinerals and Energy Resources in the geography class 10 explanation of Minerals and Energy Resources class10 extra questions of Minerals and Energy Resources class10 Minerals and Energy Resources class10 main points Coal is a one of the important minerals which is mainly used in the generation of thermal power and smelting of iron ore. Coal occurs in rock sequences mainly of two geological ages, namely Gondwana and tertiary deposits. About 80 per cent of the coal deposits in India is of bituminous type and is of non-coking grade. The most important Gondwana coal fields of India are located in Damodar Valley. Tertiary coals occur in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Nagaland. It is extracted from Darangiri, Cherrapunji, Mewlong and Langrin (Meghalaya); Makum, Jaipur and Nazira in upper Assam, Namchik – Namphuk (Arunachal Pradesh) and Kalakot (Jammu and Kashmir). Besides, the brown coal or lignite occur in the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, Gujarat and Jammu and Kashmir. Glacial Lake Floods Prevented in Bhutan

10:13
The glacial melt waters that sustain hydro power in Bhutan are also a potential source of destruction. Communities in Bhutan's Punakha-Wangdue and Chamkhar Valleys have been living with the threat of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF) due to the rapid rate of glacial melting resulting from rising global temperatures. These areas - populated by emerging townships, hydropower plants, infrastructure projects, and farmland - could suffer extreme human and economic devastation should a glacial lake flood occur. In fact, a glacial outburst flood ripped through the village of Punakha in 1994, leaving 21 dead and destroying a year's worth of crops. "Even today I don't like to go near the river because I'm very afraid of another flood happening," said Sonam, a horseman who survived the catastrophic glacial lake flood. UNDP is supporting the Government of Bhutan by bringing long-term glacial lake flood risk reduction plans into existing disaster prevention policies and practices. Among the achievements of this Global Environment Facility initiative is the construction and installation of a new automatic GLOF Early Warning System. The system includes sirens, automatic water level and weather stations. In addition, a flood warning control station, linked to Bhutan's flood warning system, is monitored 24 hours a day and shares water level data with neighboring Assam and West Bengal states in India. To complement the early warning system, awareness raising activities have been conducted to over 2,500 people from vulnerable communities, schools, government and religious institutions so they are better prepared for any impending disasters. The effort also provides employment. Every year from June to September, approximately 200-250 people trek to Thorthomi glacial lake to increase controlled water drainage from the lake using pickaxes and shovels. As a result, pressure from the melt water has been reduced on the thinning moraine dam. "In the Himalayas, this is the first time this work is being done," says Yeshi Dorji, Director General, Bhutan Department of Geology and Mines. "Quite a lot of countries like Nepal, Pakistan, India are observing us and how we are doing and how successful we will be." The overall target of the project was reached when the lake water level was lowered by five metres. While initial surveys conducted before the beginning of the project have predicted a GLOF event from Thorthomi Lake as early as 2010, the project has successfully managed to avert this disaster. A recent survey of the project's impact on awareness and response capacities of the local population has revealed that 90% of GLOF-prone communities are already aware about the efforts of the project, and will be benefiting from the services provided by the early warning system even beyond the project lifetime.

How Chinese mining in the Himalayas may create a new military flashpoint with India

05:58
Projecting the mining operations as part of China’s move to take over Arunachal Pradesh, the report said “people familiar with the project say the mines are part of an ambitious plan by Beijing to reclaim South Tibet”. “China’s moves to lay claim to the region’s natural resources while rapidly building up infrastructure could turn it into ‘another South China Sea’ they said,” it said. The Post report with inputs from local officials, Chinese geologists as well as strategic experts comes less than a month after the first ever informal summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping that was aimed at cooling tensions to avert incidents like the Dokalam military standoff last year. The 73-day standoff marked a new low in bilateral ties. Lhunze was in the news last October, just about two months after Dokalam, when Xi in a rare gesture replied to correspondence from a herding family in Lhunze County underscoring Beijing’s claim to the area. The family is based in Yumai, China’s smallest town in terms of population located close to Arunachal Pradesh. Xi thanked the father and his two daughters for their loyalty and contributions to China, and also urged the people of Lhunze to “set down roots” to develop the area for the national interest. The Post report said although mining has been going on in the world’s highest mountain range for thousands of years, the challenge of accessing the remote terrain and concerns about environmental damage had until now limited the extent of the activities. But the unprecedented heavy investment by the Chinese government to build roads and other infrastructure in the area has made travel easy. Most of the precious minerals which include rare earths used to make hi-tech products are hidden under Lhunze county, the report said. By the end of last year, the scale of mining activity in Lhunze had surpassed that of all other areas in Tibet, it said. ====================================================================================================== DISCLAIMER: Each and every content used in this video is not imaginary. Minerals and Energy Resources Geography : Minerals And Energy Resources Class 10 ( Part 1 ) MOST IMPORTANT QUESTIONS OF MINERALS AND ENERGY RESOURCES FOR BOARD EXAM CLASS 10 explanation of Minerals and Energy Resources class 10 extra questions for class 10 social science geography Minerals and Energy Resources factors responsible for growth of Minerals and Energy Resources class 10 geography chapter4 Minerals and Energy Resources class 10 geography chapter Minerals and Energy Resources class 10 in hindi India is endowed with a rich variety of mineral resources due to its varied geological structure. Bulk of the valuable minerals are products of pre-palaezoic age (Refer: Chapter 2 of Class XI, Textbook: “Fundamentals of Physical Geography” and are mainly associated with metamorphic and igneous rocks of the peninsular India. The vast alluvial plain tract of north India is devoid of minerals of economic use. The mineral resources provide the country with the necessary base for industrial development. In this chapter, we shall discuss the availability of various types of mineral and energy resources in the country. metallic minerals are the sources of metals. Iron ore, copper, gold produce metal and are included in this category. Metallic minerals are further divided into ferrous and non-ferrous metallic minerals. Ferrous, as you know, refers to iron. All those minerals which have iron content are ferrous such as iron ore itself and those which do not have iron content are non-ferrous such as copper, bauxite, etc. Non-metallic minerals are either organic in origin such as fossil fuels also known as mineral fuelswhich are derived from the buried animal and plant life such as coal and petroleum. Other type of non-metallic minerals are inorganic in origin such as mica, limestone and graphite, etc. Minerals have certain characteristics. These are unevenly distributed over space. There is inverse relationship in quality and quantity of minerals i.e. good quality minerals are less in quantity as compared to low quality minerals. The third main characteristic is that all minerals are exhaustible over time. These take long to develop geologically and they cannot be replenished immediately at the time of need. Thus, they have to be conserved and not misused as they do not have the second crop. Agencies involved in the exploration of minerals In India, systematic surveying, prospecting and exploration for minerals is undertaken by the Geological Survey of India (GSI), Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC), Mineral Exploration Corporation Ltd. (MECL), National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC), Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM), Bharat Gold Mines Ltd. (BGML), Hindustan Copper Ltd. (HCL), National Aluminium Company Ltd. (NALCO) and the Departments of Mining and Geology in various states. Distribution of Minerals in India Most of the metallic minerals in India occur in the peninsular plateau region in the old crystalline rocks. Over 97 per cent of coal reserves occur in the valleys of Damodar, Sone, Mahanadi and Godavari. Petroleum reserves are located in the sedimentary basins of Assam, Gujarat and Mumbai High i.e. off-shore region in the Arabian Sea. New reserves have been located in the Krishna-Godavari and Kaveri basins. Most of the major mineral resources occur to the east of a line linking Mangaluru and Kanpur. Minerals are generally concentrated in three broad belts in India. There may be some sporadic occurrences here and there in isolated pockets.
