The impact of divorce on children: Tamara D. Afifi at TEDxUCSB
Tamara Afifi is a Professor in the Department of Communication at UCSB. Most of her research focuses on how family members cope communicatively with various challenges they face. When examining her research program, two primary themes emerge: (1) information regulation (privacy, secrets, disclosure, avoidance) in parent-child and dating relationships, and (2) communication processes related to uncertainty, loss, stress and coping in families, with particular emphasis on post-divorce families. Professor Afifi was the recipient of the Young Scholar Award from the InternationalCommunication Association in 2006 and the Brommel Award from the National Communication Association in 2011 for a distinguished career of research in family communication. She has also won several other research awards, including the Franklin Knower Article Award in 2004 and the Distinguished Article Award in 2008 from the National Communication Association. Finally, she has received numerous teaching awards, including a Distinguished Teaching Award from the faculty senate at UCSB in 2009. The Philosophy of Kreia: A Critical Examination of Star Wars
The character Kreia from the game Knights of the Old Republic 2 is arguably one of the greatest female characters in gaming. However, despite her fame, much of her philosophy has been misunderstood due to the puzzling manner in which the game presents her backstory and motives. This video will serve both as an examination of Kreia's philosophy and her criticisms of the Star Wars universe as a whole. Chris Avellone famously said in an interview that Knights of the Old Republic 2 was meant to question everything there had to be questioned about Star Wars. This video will be answering those questions. This video has been five months in the making.

I Was Wrong About Attraction? Re-examining Paradigms
Are looks and more physical aspects of a man more important than what society and advice columns say? That's something I've thought about for a long time, and recently I've been having a little epiphany. Examine Your Relationship with Death and Loss - Terri Cole 2016
Examine Your Relationship with Death and Loss - Terri Cole 2016 http://terricole.com What do you think happens after death? Have you ever examined your relationship with the life cycle? In this tune up tip, licensed psychotherapist Terri Cole, gets real with the ways many people in America try to avoid death and how that can lead to an inability to deal with loss when it occurs. In many other cultures, society understands that death is a part of life, but it seems that we in the US obsess with prolonging life for as long as possible. It is difficult to think about your opinions on what happens when you transition from this life if you are avoiding and ignoring the possibility for yourself and those around you. One of the most difficult kinds of loss is the death of a spouse and finding love again. This tune up tip is a simple inquiry into your own relationship with the life cycle and death because if you are unable to examine that relationship, you will not be able to be present after a loss. To read more about dealing with death, check out the blog at: https://terricole.com/christina-rasmussen/ And for more on love after loss, listen to the Hello Freedom podcast interview with Terri Cole and Christina Rasmussen called “Having Your Second Firsts” on iTunes or at: https://terricole.com/category/hello-freedom/ About Terri Cole: Terri Cole is a licensed psychotherapist and an expert at teaching people how to find Real Love and turn Fear into Freedom. For almost two decades, Terri has empowered celebrities, professional athletes, and individuals alike through television, radio, her popular TEDx talk (What if FEAR were just a Feeling?) workshops, and a thriving private practice to redesign limiting mental blueprints to create extraordinary lives. Terri earned what she refers to as her, PhD in Fear, after her father died suddenly; she was diagnosed with cancer twice and held up at gunpoint in her home, all within a year. That year of fear propelled Terri to become an expert in the mind/body connection to fear. Twenty years later she has taught thousands of students and clients to turn their pain into purpose and fear into freedom. Danielle LaPorte wrote,” As my mother would say, Terri can “shoot bullshit out of the air.” Lucid, like wow. She can look at a relationship dynamic, or a business structure, or a repeating pattern and bam, fwam, shazam, she can tell you what’s really going on in one sentence, in one minute. And she does it freely, anytime of the day, with anyone who’s ready for it.” Dina Manzo from RHONJ referred to Terri as, “The coach to the coaches and secret weapon to the stars!” Terri’s strategies combine practical psychology, Eastern mindfulness practices, and harnessing the power of intention to create sustainable change. Her “tell it like it is” sense of humor and razor sharp insight combined with deep empathy and understanding gives her a unique ability to reach people and inspire transformation. Terri is motivated by her desire to help people create their best lives and not be stopped by FEAR. Kris Carr praises; “Terri Cole is a powerful force of nature. She will teach you how to smash your blocks and unleash your inner fire. If you want to be truly free, listen to Terri. Listen very carefully.” NY Times best selling author, motivational speaker and long time mentee of Terri’s, Gabrielle Bernstein says, “Terri Cole is a powerhouse healer, spiritual teacher, and coach. With a passion for service and a deep desire to shift the energy of the planet, Terri is a true miracle worker.” Where else to find me: Terri Cole: https://terricole.com/ Podcast “Hello freedom” http://apple.co/1J8FdNr Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TerriColeLCS... Lessons Learned: General MacArthur's Dismissal
On April 11, 1951, President Harry Truman announced with "deep regret" that he had dismissed General Douglas MacArthur as commanding general of U.S. forces in the Korean War. Truman's decision came after MacArthur repeatedly criticized the president's policies, advocating a more aggressive strategy even as Truman sought to limit the war. After his announcement, the president faced intense criticism while MacArthur returned home to a hero's welcome, including an address to a joint session of Congress and a ticker-tape parade through New York City in his honor. However, the controversy slowly subsided as most Americans--and U.S. generals--made it clear that they opposed MacArthur's military strategy. General Omar Bradley famously said that MacArthur's policies "would involve us in the wrong war, at the wrong place, at the wrong time, and with the wrong enemy." James M. Lindsay, CFR's senior vice president and director of studies, argues that the firing of MacArthur shows that "presidents can be justified in overruling the military advice of even their most decorated generals." That lesson continues to apply today, he says. When President Obama receives recommendations from his generals concerning the war in Afghanistan, he "may accept those recommendations, revise them, or reject them entirely." "That is the meaning of the principle of civilian control of the military," Lindsay argues, "and it's what the framers intended when they made the president 'commander-in-chief.'" This video is part of Lessons Learned with James M. Lindsay, a series dedicated to exploring historical events and examining their meaning in the context of foreign relations today: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLF2F38E5941910270 http://www.cfr.org/us-strategy-and-politics/lessons-learned-general-macarthurs-dismissal/p27905

How to Optimize Social Interactions: A Lesson on Presence From Amy Cuddy
Being your true self means being present under trying circumstances, but that takes practices and a certain amount of self-knowledge. Here's what you need to know to get started. Cuddy's latest book is " Presence: Bringing Your Boldest Self to Your Biggest Challenges" (http://goo.gl/sx098n). Read more at BigThink.com: http://bigthink.com/videos/amy-cuddy-on-presence-in-social-interactions Follow Big Think here: YouTube: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BigThinkdotcom Twitter: https://twitter.com/bigthink Transcript - Presence is the state of being attuned to, and able to comfortably express, your true self — so your best qualities, your core values, your personality — and really to do so under stressful circumstances. Because when you can do that, you’re then able to kind of let your guard down and hear what’s actually happening in the situation rather than what you fear might be happening. Presence comes from knowing your story, you know, really knowing who you are — so knowing what your core values are, what makes you you. What’s one of the things about you that can’t be changed, no matter how you perform in this negotiation or on this math test? So it comes from knowing who you are, accepting who you are, believing your story and then being able to access those things. And sometimes people have all of that but they can’t access it. So when they get into that stressful situation they go into fight-or-flight mode, and they basically shut down, and a wall comes up, and now they can’t access the very tools that they actually possess to do well in that situations. So they can’t be present. It’s just not possible. Everyone has these biggest challenges and they are situations that we approach with a sense of dread that we execute with anxiety and distraction. We’re thinking about what they might be thinking of us, what we should have said two minutes ago, what’s going to happen in the future. And then we leave them with a sense of regret, feel that we weren’t seen. Now these big challenges vary dramatically across people. So for some people it might be a job interview. For a lot of people it’s a job interview. For some people it might be relationship conflict at home. For other people it might be going to see the doctor and, you know, making sure that you’re getting all the information you need. So it varies dramatically but I think there are sort of two key elements. Read Full Transcript Here: http://goo.gl/LHLhlG.

Piers Corbyn: The Reality of Long Range Weather and Climate Forecasting | EU2014
In his talk, Piers Corbyn described the failure of standard meteorology (SM) in outlook, theory, and practice. He included: signals in real meteorology data unexplained by SM; real role of jet stream, stratosphere, electro-jets, magnetosphere, solar wind, solar corona, and the Moon; the total inability of SM to explain: sudden stratospheric warmings and its consequences, tropical storm intensifications, angular momentum concentration in tornadoes; and the need for something else such as electromagnetic plasma explanations; the theoretical basis of non-standard long range weather forecasting on a real planet; a summary on his WeatherAction forecasting skill and examples; and the future of forecasting and meteorology, climate 'science' and science in general. Piers Corbyn began recording weather and climate patterns at the age of five, constructing his own observation equipment. He obtained a first-class honors degree in physics at Imperial College London. In 1969, he became the first president of the Imperial College Students' Union to be directly elected by the student body. He later studied astrophysics in 1979 at Queen Mary College, London, and then began examining the relationship between Earth's weather and climate and solar activity. Following many years of weather prediction as an occupation, Piers formed WeatherAction in 1995, where he sells web-accessible long-range monthly forecasts for Britain and Ireland, Europe, and the USA plus special forecasts of 'Red Weather periods' and related increases in thunder/tornado and earthquake risk. www.weatheraction.com Subscribe to Thunderbolts Update newsletter: http://eepurl.com/ETy41 Thunderbolts Project Home: http://www.thunderbolts.info Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/thunderboltsproject Picture of the Day: http://www.thunderbolts.info/wp/daily-tpod/ Electric Universe (Wal Thornhill): http://www.holoscience.com/wp/ Essential Guide to the Electric Universe: http://www.thunderbolts.info/wp/eg-contents/

Meaningful Partnerships: Exploring the Relationship between CLASS and NAEYC’s Accreditation
There are many resources for organizations engaged in quality improvement efforts. In fact, it can be confusing to understand which tools to use and how multiple tools can be used in a complementary fashion. Understand the relationships among various quality improvement tools and measurements, by examining the specific partnership between Teachstone and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Learn about the purpose of program and classroom assessment tools, and more closely examine the relationship between NAEYC’s program accreditation criteria and the CLASS measure for preschool classrooms. See examples of how these tools are similar and different and understand how this information can be useful for supporting their own quality improvement efforts. Food for thought: How your belly controls your brain | Ruairi Robertson | TEDxFulbrightSantaMonica
"Have you ever had a gut feeling or butterflies in your stomach? Has hunger ever changed your mood? Our bellies and brains are physically and biochemically connected in a number of ways, meaning the state of our intestines can alter the way our brains work and behave, giving a whole new meaning to 'Food for thought'. As a nutritionist, microbiologist and neuroscientist, Ruairi Robertson is passionate about the link between our bellies and brains. His research is examining how our intestines and the microbes within them can influence both physical and mental health, and most importantly how our diets influence this relationship. Ruairi has travelled the world researching food, and believes it is the key to global public health. Ruairi is a PhD student in University College Cork in Ireland and current Fulbright Scholar (2015/16) to Harvard University. Independent, Dependent and Confounding Variables in Quantitative Research
http://youstudynursing.com/ Research eBook on Amazon: http://amzn.to/1hB2eBd Check out the links below and SUBSCRIBE for more youtube.com/user/NurseKillam Related Videos: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLs4oKIDq23AdTCF0xKCiARJaBaSrwP5P2 Connect with me on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/NursesDeservePraise Twitter: @NurseKillam https://twitter.com/NurseKillam Research questions should clearly identify the variables under study. In the above examples X symbolizes the independent variable and Y symbolizes the dependent variable. In this video we are going to examine the question "Is there a difference in GPA between nursing students who watch NurseKillam's videos and those who do not watch NurseKillam's videos?" The independent variable is the one that researchers think will have an effect on the dependent variable or variables under study. If the study is experimental the researcher will manipulate this variable. This manipulation means that the researchers will cause the variable to happen in a group of people. For example, if we used our question for an experimental study the researcher would show NurseKillam's videos to one group of students while ensuring that the other group of students did not see them. If the study is non-experimental the variable is assumed to happen naturally before or during the study. Instead of making some students watch the videos the researchers would measure or observe if the videos were watched. One way to do this would be to survey students to see if they had watched the videos. Like the name suggests, the dependent variable is assumed to be a result of or change based on the presence, absence or magnitude of the independent variable. One way to remember this relationship is that the outcome of the dependent variable depends on the independent variable. The question is worded in a way that identifies the variables to be studied. In our example the two variables are GPA and watching NurseKillam's videos. It would not make sense for an increased GPA to cause students to watch the videos. However, watching the videos may cause an increase a student's GPA. Therefore, the dependent variable in our example is the GPA. The one that is assumed to cause the change in the GPA is the independent variable. Even though a higher GPA may be assumed to be a result of watching NurseKillam's videos a causal relationship between the two variables cannot necessarily be proven. Instead, a relationship can be identified but awareness of other factors needs to be discussed. When examining the relationship between the independent and dependent variables researchers must also be aware of and control for as many confounding variables as possible. Confounding variables include anything that may confuse or confound the relationship that is being examined. It is because of confounding variables that non-experimental research cannot prove cause and effect relationships. Researchers also need to be careful not to claim cause and effect relationships too easily in experimental research because of these confounding variables. In experimental research an attempt is made to control as many confounding variables as possible. In our example question, what things other than watching NurseKillam's videos may cause an increased GPA? Anything other than the independent variable that could have caused the student's GPA to increase would be a confounding variable. To remember what these types of variables are and how to identify them think about relationships. The dependent variable is the one that depends on something and is expected to change. Independent variables, like independent people do not rely on others. Anything that may confuse this relationship is confounding. There are a couple of messages I want you to take from this example: 1) Please note that research questions may include many variables -- not just one independent and one dependent variable. 2) whether a particular variable like class attendance is independent or dependent may change depending on the role it plays in any given study.

Science vs God? - Episode 1: The Cosmos
Science vs God? is a gripping, no-holds-barred documentary series definitively examining whether contemporary science appears to support the existence of a Divine Creator or systematically bury "Him". It assembles a world-class cast of "believing" and "unbelieving" philosophers and scientists, including William Lane Craig, Francis Collins, John Polkinghorne, John Lennox, Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Steven Weinberg, Daniel Dennett and the late Christopher Hitchens, who, in spirited and determined fashion, unleash their arguments as to whether the scientific evidence points to us being here by cosmic chance or because a creator intended it. Its origin shrouded in mystery, described with the precision of mathematics, there is nothing as impressive as the Cosmos. Life on Earth is supported by forces finely tuned to an astonishing degree. So is it all luck? Or does the evidence suggest something more behind our ordered Universe?
