Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Open-pit, open-cast or open cut mining is a surface mining technique of extracting rock or minerals from the earth by their removal from an open pit or borrow. This form of mining differs from extractive methods that require tunneling into the earth, such as long wall mining. Open-pit mines are used when deposits of commercially useful minerals or rocks are found near the surface; that is, where the overburden (surface material covering the valuable deposit) is relatively thin or the material of interest is structurally unsuitable for tunnelling (as would be the case for sand, cinder, and gravel). For minerals that occur deep below the surface—where the overburden is thick or the mineral occurs as veins in hard rock—underground mining methods are used to extract the valued material. Open-pit mines that produce building materials and dimension stone are commonly referred to as "quarries." Open-pit mines are typically enlarged until either the mineral resource is exhausted, or an increasing ratio of overburden to ore makes further mining uneconomic. When this occurs, the exhausted mines are sometimes converted to landfills for disposal of solid wastes. However, some form of water control is usually required to keep the mine pit from becoming a lake, if the mine is situated in a climate of considerable precipitation or if any layers of the pit forming the mine border productive aquifers.

Quarrying - economic, environmental and social effects | Chemistry | Hindi

03:50
Find more effects of mining right here: http://www.buzzle.com/articles/how-does-mining-affect-the-environment.html Mining is the source of all the substances that cannot be obtained by industrial processes or through agriculture. Mining reaps huge profits for the companies that own them and provides employment to a large number of people. It is also a huge source of revenue for the government. Despite its economic importance, the effects of mining on the environment is a pressing issue. Mining activities require the clearing of large areas of land. The chemicals used in the mining process often escape into the environment causing pollution. Watch this video to know how mining affects the environment.

A quarry is a place from which dimension stone, rock, construction aggregate, riprap, sand, gravel, or slate has been excavated from the ground. A quarry is the same thing as an open-pit mine from which minerals are extracted. The only non-trivial difference between the two is that open-pit mines that produce building materials and dimension stone are commonly referred to as quarries. The word quarry can also include the underground quarrying for stone, such as Bath stone. Many quarry stones such as marble, granite, limestone, and sandstone are cut into larger slabs and removed from the quarry. The surfaces are polished and finished with varying degrees of sheen or luster. Polished slabs are often cut into tiles or countertops and installed in many kinds of residential and commercial properties. Natural stone quarried from the earth is often considered a luxury and tends to be a highly durable surface, thus highly desirable. Title of Video: What does Mining Methods Open cast, adit tunnel mining and shaft mining meaning? | EXPLAINED | by Mohammad Usman Description of the Video: Shaft mining is the process of mining of minerals or ores from underground or subsurface by way excavating the earth so as to reach the mineral or ore deposits. The shaft means the form of opening made vertical or inclined for mining. The shaft enables the miners , material being excavated from sub surface of earth, the hosting or lifting equipment and ventilation ducts through it. Once the region of mineral or ore deposits reached the shaft is extended and created at different horizontal levels at different directions based on the surveyed regions by drilling process. Drilling : Drilling is the process of cutting a cylindrical hole by using a rotary tool to penetrate the earth or rock or subsurface in exploration of crude oil or gas (petroleum or natural gas). Drilling rigs built on land to perform drilling usually consist of drill shaft with drill bit(cutting tool) in oil fields with handling, transport, storage and processing facilities. Drilling platforms are built on offshore with drilling equipments for drilling beneath the oceans. The Metso 4265 Gyratory Crusher

08:01
A crusher is a machine designed to reduce large rocks into smaller rocks, gravel, or rock dust. There are five types of crushers; Jaw crusher, Gyratory crusher, Cone crusher, Impact crusher and Mineral sizers. A gyratory crusher is consisting of a concave surface and a conical head; both surfaces are typically lined with manganese steel surfaces. The inner cone has a slight circular movement, but does not rotate; the movement is generated by an eccentric arrangement. Material travels downward between the two surfaces being progressively crushed until it is small enough to fall out through the gap between the two surfaces. A gyratory crusher is one of the main types of primary crushers in a mine or ore processing plant. Gyratory crushers are designated in size either by the gape and mantle diameter or by the size of the receiving opening. Gyratory crushers can be used for primary or secondary crushing. The crushing action is caused by the closing of the gap between the mantle line (movable) mounted on the central vertical spindle and the concave liners (fixed) mounted on the main frame of the crusher. The gap is opened and closed by an eccentric on the bottom of the spindle that causes the central vertical spindle to gyrate. The vertical spindle is free to rotate around its own axis. The crusher illustrated is a short-shaft suspended spindle type, meaning that the main shaft is suspended at the top and that the eccentric is mounted above the gear. The short-shaft design has superseded the long-shaft design in which the eccentric is mounted below the gear.

The Adventure Work....in Quarry

07:44
THE QUARRY STORY The Story of How a Quarry Works Unless you’ve visited or toured a quarry, chances are you don’t know much about what goes on inside one. In the simplest terms, a rock quarry is a place where little rocks are made from big rocks. Although the basic process is the same, each quarry is different and some of the things in Quarry Story may not apply to all operations. Geography, geology and the type of stone mined, how close a quarry is to neighbors, the size of the operation and the main transportation method used to get the stone products to customers all have an impact on how each quarry is designed and operated. Open Pit Mining and the Missouri Blasting Safety Act

09:44
Blasting is an activity associated with open pit mining of industrial minerals in Missouri. There has been confusion among the public about who to contact concerning blasting at an industrial mineral open pit mine site. The misconception is that the Land Reclamation Program regulates blasting at open pit industrial mineral mine sites. Blasting at industrial mineral open pit mine sites is regulated by the Missouri Division of Fire Safety, Missouri Blasting Safety Act. Therefore, the Land Reclamation Program created a video to inform the public about land reclamation requirements for open pit mining operations as well as information about the Missouri Blasting Safety Act and the Missouri Division of Fire Safety. This video helps to clarify the distinction between Land Reclamation Program and Missouri Division of Fire Safety roles at industrial mineral open pit mine operations. http://dnr.mo.gov/env/lrp/ Acknowledgements: Idea creator: Mr. Don Cripe, Missouri Department of Natural Resources. A quarry is a place from which dimension stone, rock, construction aggregate, riprap, sand, gravel, or slate has been excavated from the ground. A quarry is distinctly different from an open-pit mine from which minerals are extracted. An example of this difference between quarrying and mining would be that limestone is quarried whereas the mineral lime is mined. Buechel Stone Blasting & Quarrying Processes - Our Stone Stories Start with Quarries

05:37
Buechel Stone is proud to share an in-depth, up-close, updated look at our blasting and quarrying processes. [Transcript] Our Stone Stories Start with Quarries At Buechel Stone, we live by our mission of providing the best, most dependable experience in the natural stone industry – guaranteed. And to start at the very beginning of the best, we are mindful of the fact that long before its beautiful showcase on the architectural projects of today, the lengthy lifespan of dimensional stone starts geologically – with Mother Earth. Millions of years before Buechel Stone was even a thought, natural stone was being produced by Mother Nature. While working with the maker of this beautiful raw material, we’re doing whatever she allows in order to provide our customers with only the highest quality dimensional stone. But as with anything precious, true worth is found beneath the surface. All of our natural stone products come from somewhere pure, authentic, and REAL,; so we’re proud to start your journey of our processes with an introduction to the place where it all began for us and our stone – our quarries. Because of it’s durability, low maintenance requirements, and lasting visual appeal; natural stone has always been an earth-friendly product. And at Buechel Stone, we incorporate green thinking into everything that we do. That’s why before a quarry is even proposed, we’re protecting nature’s design with quarry site plans that emphasize sustainability, resource efficiency, and long-term environmental advocacy. Once a proper site plan is established, operations can begin by removing any dirt or rock that overlies the stone. The topsoil and overburden material is saved for placement into a berm – where it is covered, seeded, and stored until implementing the final reclamation plan. Once the stone is exposed, the material is removed from the quarry in benches. With the top bedding plane revealed, cracks and seams running along the surface of the stone are used as indicators of existing fractures through underlying layers. A large amount of stone used for building and landscaping is formed in layers. These layers were created over millions of years in sediment beds. The natural top or bottom of the stone is called the stone’s bedface. This term comes from the natural “bed”, or horizontal plane, of the stone while forming. Natural cleft describes the natural thickness of the bed, which typically varies from layer to layer. There are two natural faces that can occur along the vertical planes of layered stone. A natural split occurs where the stone breaks in the quarry at a location where there isn’t a natural seam. Weatheredge, which is sometimes referred to as rustic, occurs where a natural vertical seam in the quarry has been eroded and minerals are deposited on the face. With reference to how the different faces of the stone are formed; bedface, natural cleft, natural split, and weatheredge indicators exist according to their locations within the quarry prior to removal. Variations in the depth and intensity of colors and textures are also signatures of each stone’s unique creation story. These beautiful aesthetic distinctions allow us to combine stone faces in unlimited ways to create product blends unique to us and our quarries. Here’s where the process of stone removal gets even more interesting. In preparation for a selective, sophisticated blast; drill holes are placed along the perimeter of the bench behind the natural seams. The distance between holes depends on the variations and physical properties of the stone at the location of the intended break. Although we employ the use of high grade explosives, typical blasting is not of “Hollywood” proportions. The drill holes are calculated to accommodate a light explosive charge – just enough to help separate the layers and loosen the stone for manageable removal with the use of heavy equipment. Now that the layers have been loosened, front end loaders use forks to pry between the layers and separate the stone. Stone slabs are extracted from the top down and then sorted and stacked on pallets according general criteria such as size, thickness, and color. Material that is thinly layered is hand stacked on pallets. It’s best for the pieces to remain as large as possible throughout the removal process so the stone can be used for its best potential. After all, we take significant pride in providing a full range of natural colors and textures that can be combined in infinite ways to achieve nearly any design; whether it be for building stone, cut stone, or landscape stone applications. Even with state-of-the-art production equipment, our technologically advanced specifying and design tools, the most detailed CAD shop drawings, and unparalleled service; the story of Buechel Stone’s exceptional selection of natural stone starts with a quarry.

27:07
A quarry is a place from which dimension stone, rock, construction aggregate, riprap, sand, gravel, or slate has been excavated from the ground. A quarry is the same thing as an open-pit mine from which minerals are extracted. The only trivial difference between the two is that open-pit mines that produce building materials and dimension stone are commonly referred to as quarries. The word quarry can also include the underground quarrying for stone, such as Bath stone.

What is STRIP MINING? What does STRIP MINING mean? STRIP MINING meaning, definition & explanation

01:34
What is STRIP MINING? What does STRIP MINING mean? STRIP MINING meaning - STRIP MINING definition - STRIP MINING explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. "Strip mining" is the practice of mining a seam of mineral, by first removing a long strip of overlying soil and rock (the overburden). It is most commonly used to mine coal and lignite (brown coal). Strip mining is only practical when the ore body to be excavated is relatively near the surface. This type of mining uses some of the largest machines on earth, including bucket-wheel excavators which can move as much as 12,000 cubic meters of earth per hour. There are two forms of strip mining. The more common method is "area stripping", which is used on fairly flat terrain, to extract deposits over a large area. As each long strip is excavated, the overburden is placed in the excavation produced by the previous strip. "Contour stripping" involves removing the overburden above the mineral seam near the outcrop in hilly terrain, where the mineral outcrop usually follows the contour of the land. Contour stripping is often followed by auger mining into the hillside, to remove more of the mineral. This method commonly leaves behind terraces in mountainsides.
