Watson Research Center Fei Wang, Department of Healthcare Policy and Research, Cornell University Abstract: In the last decade, advances in high-throughput technologies, growth of clinical data warehouses, and rapid accumulation of biomedical knowledge provided unprecedented opportunities and challenges to researchers in biomedical informatics. One distinct solution, to efficiently conduct big data analytics for biomedical problems, is the application of matrix computation and factorization methods such as non-negative matrix factorization, joint matrix factorization, tensor factorization. Compared to probabilistic and information theoretic approaches, matrix-based methods are fast, easy to understand and implement. In this tutorial, we provide a review of recent advances in algorithms and methods using matrix and their potential applications in biomedical informatics. We survey various related articles from data mining venues as well as from biomedical informatics venues to share with the audience key problems and trends in matrix computation research, with different novel applications such as drug repositioning, personalized medicine, and electronic phenotyping. We've really improved the breadth and depth of the content. We've created entirely new user interface, a whole new search experience. It's basically an entirely new medical platform for us with a new medical taxonomy. An easy time to answer. Ability to get to the content that you want in the clinical context that you're in. Derek Gordon, General Manager, Health Information & Technology Group Healthline (MSLGROUP Client) GORDON: We are very excited to be introducing our new coding insight application. It's a new application built on our health data engine. It enables providers, but also ACOs and payers to really better understand what is inside every single patient record. All of this really rich unstructured data we're able to get in there and mine that with our coding insight application and help providers at the point of care better understand not only how to have a more thoughtful interaction with their patient, but then how to accurately code that interaction inside the patient record so that there is a better understanding of what's going on with that patient's health. But also so that the provider or the ACO is able to better submit for reimbursements, for instance. Stephen Cobb, Senior Security Researcher ESET North American (MSLGROUP Client) COBB: ESET is a security solution provider. We specialize particularly in anti-malware, also encryption solutions and authentication solutions. We need to be a lot more suspicious about the kinds of abuse of our system, whether it’s from insiders or from attacks from the outside. And what we tend to see is health care organizations trying to comply with standards such as HIPAA which do mandate level of security protection, but more doing a kind of check the box approach than actually making sure all those things are in place. So obviously, you should be doing anti-virus scanning in a health care organization

We are currently undergoing a revolution in the field of biomedical research that will enable tailoring preventative strategies and therapies directly for each patient--Precision medicine. Systems Biologist, Stefan Bekiranov talks about what’s driving this revolution and how researchers are finding potential cures to diseases such as cancer at a faster rate than ever before. This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. He received his PhD in theoretical condensed matter physics from the University of California at Santa Barbara and went on to do postdoctoral research in statistical/condensed matter physics at the University of Maryland. After that, Dr. Bekiranov conducted more postdoctoral research in computational biology at The Rockefeller University. He pioneered the analysis of high-resolution genomic tiling array data as a Bioinformatics Staff Scientist at Affymetrix. He is now an Associate Professor at the University of Virginia School of Medicine working in the fields of epigenomics and systems biology and has published over 50 papers in peer-reviewed journals. The ultimate goal of his work is to arrive at improved therapeutic targets to treat and hopefully, one day, cure cancer. How can data mining in hospitals help researchers find cures for the most harmful diseases? In [email protected] 2016, Richard talks about his role in the Human Brain Project. He explains how neurologists and psychiatrists will use the results of data mining the masses of data in Europe’s hospital and research databases to develop new diagnostic schemas thus facilitating an era of precision medicine. Richard, a former brain doctor, studied medicine at the University of Cambridge, where he first became interested in neuroscience. His work includes the development of new techniques for MRI, as well as a study drawing a connection between the enlarged hippocampus and heightened navigational skills of London taxi drivers. He now works for the Human Brain Project, where he is in charge of its medical informatics platform. But how are we going to manage it? Professor Maria Fasli is based in the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering at the University of Essex. She obtained her BSc from the Department of Informatics of T.E.I. Thessaloniki (Greece). She received her PhD from the University of Essex in 2000 having worked under the supervision of Ray Turner in axiomatic systems for intelligent agents. She has previously worked in the area of data mining and machine learning. Her current research interests lie in agents and multi-agent systems and in particular formal theories for reasoning agents, group formation and social order as well as the applications of agent technology to e-commerce. Multilevel Interventions in Health Care: Building the Foundation for Future Research Goals Computer Simulation Models and Multilevel Cancer Control Interventions Lead author: Joseph Morrissey, PhD (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) This paper will examine how models can be used to simulate the effects of multilevel intervention components and the role of mediating and moderating factors on outcomes. The paper will: (a) describe how simulation has been used to assess intervention effects outside of the realm of cancer; (b) propose extensions of existing models of the natural history of cancer and cancer care; and (c) discuss challenges and future directions for simulation modeling in cancer control. Conference Description The research conference sponsored by the National Cancer Institute assembled health care researchers, clinicians, and administrators to discuss the importance of multilevel approaches to improving health care quality in the United States. It occurred over two days and was associated with the American Society for Preventive Oncology's (ASPO) annual meeting in March of 2011. This presentation is one of 13 research papers. The conference offered platforms for participant discussion and engagement regarding the opportunities and challenges of multilevel intervention research. I wanted to film a Morning routine for school or work, but summer is just around the corner, which means no school or work. So here I show my typical free day morning routine or a summer morning routine. Although summer hasn't yet arrived to where I live to be honest. Anyway, this is a morning routine when I don't have to get up and run out the door, but I can actually sleep a bit longer. Well as you can see in the video that's not always the case, hehe. http://sarabeautycorner.com/ This morning routine is probably different from all other morning routine videos because I also show you 10 amazing DIY ideas that make every morning the best morning ever! I have been trying to eat very healthy lately, so in this morning routine video I show you several easy healthy recipes. I made an easy and delicious smoothie with strawberries, raspberries, banana and some milk. This smoothie is so delicious and done in a second! Other healthy recipes that I show you throughout my morning routine are granola and seed crackers. Both are so easy to make, so tasty and convenient to have for a breakfast or a snack. In the morning routine video I also show you some DIY makeup, specifically a DIY tinted lip balm and DIY beach hair spray. A DIY lip balm consists of only two ingredients that I bet you already have at home. Vaseline and a piece of old lipstick. This DIY lip balm makes my lips moist and soft while it also gives them a nice touch of color. There can't be a morning routine without fixing our hair, right? This time I decided for heatless waves that won't even take a minute of your time. Because who wants to spend a hour on hairstyles ?! Not me hehe. And since this is a morning routine for summer my heatless waves aren't perfect without that summer beachy texture. I show how to quickly make a DIY beach hair spray. Just a few ingredients and you have an awesome spray that gives instant texture and waves to your hairstyles. In the morning routine I also show my workout routine as well. On rainy day I like to do a strength workout but since this weekend the weather was nice, I decided for a cardio workout and went out for a run. Even though I don't wear makeup everyday, I show you my makeup routine for when I do decide to put something on my face. So we can call it my everyday makeup, because whenever I wear makeup, this is the makeup look I go for. Just a very basic natural makeup, that enhances my facial features without making me look overly done. When it comes to clothes, you guys know how I love my DIY projects. So I show how to make awesome DIY shoes and DIY graphic tee. Both so easy, fun to make and gorgeous to look at. For the DIY shoes I stick denim hearts all over my sneakers and they turned out fantastic. DIY graphic tee is made by simply ironing the picture on with the help of a transfer paper. And of course I had to also include an easy and lovely nail art design to my morning routine. Purple nails with colorful dotted accents are an easy way to make a perfect summer nail art in no time. As promised here are the measures I used to make my healthy crackers: one and a half cups of sunflower seeds, quarter of a cup of pumpkin seeds and pines, one cup whole flax seeds, half a cup grounded flax seeds, about five spoons of chia seeds, half a cup of sesame seeds, some almond slices, 5 spoons of psyllium husk and a tea spoon of salt. Dipole: Diagnosis Prediction in Healthcare via Attention-based Bidirectional Recurrent Neural Networks Fenglong Ma (SUNY Buffalo) Radha Chitta (Conduent) Jing Zhou (Conduent) Quanzeng You (University of Rochester) Tong Sun (United Technologies Research Center) Jing Gao (SUNY Buffalo) Predicting the future health information of patients from the historical Electronic Health Records (EHR) is a core research task in the development of personalized healthcare. Patient EHR data consist of sequences of visits over time, where each visit contains multiple medical codes, including diagnosis, medication, and procedure codes. The most important challenges for this task are to model the temporality and high dimensionality of sequential EHR data and to interpret the prediction results. Existing work solves this problem by employing recurrent neural networks (RNNs) to model EHR data and utilizing simple attention mechanism to interpret the results. However, RNN-based approaches suffer from the problem that the performance of RNN drops when the size of sequences is large, and the relationships between subsequent visits are ignored by current RNN-based approaches. To address these issues, we propose Dipole, an end-to-end, simple and robust model for predicting patients’ future health information. Dipole employs bidirectional recurrent neural networks to remember all the information of both the past visits and the future visits, and it introduces three attention mechanisms to measure the relationships of different visits for the prediction. With the attention mechanisms, Dipole can interpret the prediction results efficiently. Dipole also allows us to interpret the learned medical code representations, which are confirmed positively by medical experts. Experimental results on two real world EHR datasets show that the proposed Dipole can significantly improve the prediction accuracy compared with the state-of-the-art diagnosis prediction approaches and provide clinically meaningful interpretation. Health-related data is constantly being collected through the digitalization of medical records and the concordant interest in personal health monitoring. Because of this wealth of information, health care data makes up significant sectors of the big data industry, including in-hospital sensing, clinical reporting, medical imaging and home-based wellness. Health care data is large, diverse and often incomplete, and is difficult to analyze and interpret. Dr. Holmes is investigating new methods, which attempt to link disparate data sets and build computational models directly from the data. Research into data representation, signal processing, graph analytics and machine learning is yielding new and novel insight into basic biology and human health. To match the complexity of these algorithms and the magnitude of data, Dr. Holmes also studies the mapping of health care questions onto novel computational architecture. Brian Albertson of IBM Brian Albertson joined IBM in 2017 after completing his Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from South Dakota State University. Since joining, he has worked on the IO PHY design team for IBM's POWER and Z processors. Brian's contributions include logic design, verification, designer tools, and process automation.
