David Mamet: Chicago

55:17
Is there any corner of Chicago's theatrical and artistic life untouched by the legendary playwright, producer and screenwriter David Mamet (Glengarry Glen Ross, Speed the Plow, Wag the Dog and The Untouchables)? CHF is thrilled to present an evening exploring Mamet's life in and influence on our city through the lens of his first novel in two decades, 'Chicago'. In this big shouldered thriller set in Al Capone's 1920s, Mamet explores questions of honor, deceit, revenge and devotion, all in his trademark Mamet Speak— that mix of voices that move from the poetic to the profane in rapid, and graphic, succession. Chicago combines spectacular craft with a kinetic wallop as fierce as the February wind gusting off Lake Michigan. Chris Jones joins Mamet in conversion for this not-to-be-missed event. Inson Wongsam
Ora et Labora
Exhibition (02)

02:38
Inson Wongsam Ora et Labora Chiang Mai Art Museum December 22nd 2018 – February 3rd 2019 Opening Reception December 22nd 2018, 5.30pm Curated by Veronica Caciolli The Chiang Mai Art Museum is very glad to announce National Artist Inson Wongsam solo show in its space, from next December 22nd 2018. Ora et Labora (Pray and Work, from a renowned monk medieval motto) is an exhibition consisting in more than sixty new works (plus 365 drawings), all produced expressively for this occasion over the last two years, curated by Veronica Caciolli (IT, 1977). Highly estimated in Thailand and beyond, Inson Wongsam is considered a legendary artist from his journey on a Lambretta that began in 1962, which brought him from Bangkok to Italy, in order to visit the places of origin of another fundamental figure for the Thai culture, the one who first spread a contemporary knowledge and method in making art, Corrado Feroci (Silpa Bhirasri, 1892 - 1962). The bond that tightens Inson Wongsam to Italy is therefore very strong, which, among others, continues in 2015 through the meeting in Thailand with curator Veronica Caciolli, who first invited him to participate in her group show One Too Many at Ne'-Na Contemporary Art Space in Mae Rim and then in 2017 in Florence (hometown of both the curator and Silpa Bhirasri), for a tribute dedicated to him by the Florentine Academy of Fine Arts, where Silpa had formed and from which he obtained the educational model for the establishment of Silpakorn University. Since 1962, Inson Wongsam will return to Thailand only in 1974, having crossed more than ten countries, three continents and settled down in Paris and in the United States. Exhausted by the Western way of life, he will make another of his radical gestures, taking refuge in solitude in the Lamphun forest, living modestly as a farmer. It will be a subsequent meeting with another important figure, the English artist Venetia Walkey, to bring him back to society and his art world, with whom in 2000 he will constitute the Dhamma Park, an inspiring center of art, meditation, peace and ecology where he still resides. From his beginnings in the late fifties, the artist's production has been incessant and multimedia: master in woodcut, he has parallel produced bronze sculptures, jewels, paintings, drawings, chiselled wood panels, carvings and poems. This exhibition will feature his new production made up of paintings, drawings, sculptures, wooden panels, and, at the dawn of his eighty-four years, just a brand new practice: performance painting with hands, fingers and feet. At 6.30 pm during the opening reception, it will be possible to attend the creation of one of these works that he will develop for over thirty meters, along the aisle of the second gallery of the museum. From about 1962, during his brief stay in Greece on his way to Italy, Inson Wongsam experimented with abstraction, which from that era would never give up again. In this last production, in particular those works produced with the use of the heel, his symbolic forms acquire an even more paradigmatic value, imposing pure, archetypal geometric figures, a process that seems to reach its widest degree of universality. These simulacral paintings stand as "cryptograms of the self", primordial or primary images that for Carl Gustav Jung are capable of speaking with a thousand voices, capable of linking one's personal destiny to the collective destiny. His use of color, on the other hand, is equally alchemical and explosive, meant to give shape to bright internal epiphanies, pre (or post) verbal illuminations. His daily art practice, like the one of praying which however anticipates all of his gestures, places him among the international forerunners and leaders of an art intimately connected to spiritual life. Art represents in fact for Inson Wongsam a form of meditation which has indeed a therapeutic and ethical function, certainly becoming a long life elixir. From curator essay: The two fundamental souls of this artist, the abstract and the traditional, the global and the local, the western and the oriental, the religious and the artistic, the metropolitan and the ascetic ones, his position among past, future and meta-temporality, coexist live until today. His two-faced being (sibylline vate in poetry and unbridled lover of pleasures, besides) is also expressed in his ubiquity, simultaneously, consciously, and therefore necessarily we would say, inside and outside the system, in sync and dissonance with time. Inson Wongsam Ora et Labora Curated by Veronica Caciolli Chiang Mai Art Museum Chiang Mai, Thailand December 22nd 2018 – February 3rd 2019 Opening Reception December 22nd 2018, 5.30pm 6.30pm Performance Painting The exhibition will be joined by a monograph published by Chiang Mai Art Museum

She sent me a valentines day present which included a handwritten card, several question marks, a sphinx puzzle and a metal triangle puzzle - AND a hand stitched fez with a pictogram of my name on it! I also turn to the Google Form and answer two questions from there. Shane asked where I get my fezes from, and the answer is Jason Rogers’ Fez-O-Rama! Fantastic one-of-a-kind headgear for the true fez enthusiast or secret society head. And finally KidView asks who do I think will die in Gravity Falls Season 2. This is in regard to a tweet posted by Alex Hirsch that says: “at least one character will not survive the season.” Although we already have had no less than 3 deaths on screen this season already, a large collection of people believe that Alex means that a character from the main cast will not survive Gravity Falls Season Two. If that’s the case, the only character that can die with the most impact without breaking the show’s engine is Soos. Soos has already accomplished all of his goals. He has respect, family, a girlfriend, happiness, contentment and even an air of maturity. His character’s only purpose is to protect and defend Dipper and Mabel. Nothing would raise the stakes for Dipper and Mabel more than to lose their steadfast friend and guardian - and Soos’ death would cause the show to focus on finding his father - a cause worthy plot device. But that’s just my opinion! Be sure to sound off below with your theories and suggestions!

In this meeting I focus on the story elements and what they can reveal about the greater story of Gravity Falls. Firstly we need to understand that, much like it’s namesake, Sock Opera follows an operatic theme. Most operas are centered around the story of a tragedy. A deep loss is felt my the main characters of the show, and Sock Opera is no different! Despite defeating Bill, Dipper and Mabel both experience loss - Mabel loses her chance with Gabe, and Dipper loses the Laptop! The episode also teases the return of Agents Powers and Trigger - who can be seen briefly in the audience of Mabel’s puppet show, and their surveillance equipment can be spotted within the floors of the Mystery Shack! This means that Agents Powers and Trigger have not only begun spying on the Pines, but they have gained access to the Mystery Shack without the Pines knowing about it! This could mean that the Agency is simply searching for information - but if they’ve gained intimate access to the Mystery Shack, odds are that they know about the portal room… and are waiting for it to activate BEFORE they strike! This episode also possibly portends the tragic fate of two main characters - Grunkle Stan and Soos! Bill teases the audience with the exact time of Soos’ death, and of all the puppets destroyed in Sock Opera, the only one burned in intricate slow motion, was Grunkle Stan’s puppet! We also can figure out a few more things about Bill Cipher’s goals thanks to this episode. We now know that Bill once had a body of some kind, though it may not have been human. That his goal may be to gain access to our world, but it’s not by stealing someone’s body. It leaves him too vulnerable and powerless! But the biggest possible reveal comes from an offhanded comment made by Bill - namely, that he doesn’t value siblings over his own desires. This could mean that Bill Cipher has a secret sibling that has been also secretly spying on him! If that’s the case, then the best character for that sibling to spy on him would be from Gompers the Goat! No one would suspect a thing! But what do you think? Leave your theories and suggestions in the comments below!

"You Only Live Twice: Dr. Muhammad Kkansu (a.k.a Jeong Su-Il) and the Question of the Diasporic 'Other' in the Two Koreas" January 23, 2018 Joseph Regenstein Library Room 122 1100 E 57th St Chicago, IL 60637 Drawing on Kkansu’s fascinating life story, this talk will examine South Korea’s blind and willful ignorance of the North due to its entrenched Cold War ideology which ironically enabled a diasporic Korean from China to pose as a Lebanese-Filipino Muslim scholar right under its nose. Not only did Kkansu become one of the most accomplished scholars of Arabic Studies but also worked as spy for North Korean intelligence until his arrest in 1996. In contrast to other accounts of North Korean spies, it seeks to humanize the experiences of Kkansu to illustrate how a diasporic Korean employed survival strategies that he learned during his early life in China to navigate the social and political realities of national division and anxieties caused by global and internecine hostilities during the Cold War. "Making a Mark - November 5, 2016 Session 4"

Session 4: Divine Signs (Matthew Rutz presiding) 2:00pm - “Early Medieval Monograms (c. 300–900 CE): From Producers’ Marks to Liminal Graphic Devices”, Ildar Garipzanov (University of Oslo) 2:45pm - “Bolivian Marks in 3D: Inscribing Daily Life into Catholic Prayers”, Berenice Gaillemin (LabEx TransferS, Laboratoire d'Anthropologie Sociale, LAS, Paris) Humans have an urge, even a compulsion, to mark meaning through visible graphs. These signs range from coats of arms to emojis, potter’s marks to gang signs, and Paleolithic graphs to ISOTYPE or other cross-linguistic vehicles for communicating ideas. All can project meaning directly, without necessary recourse to language. For all their importance, however, there is little of a comparative nature to probe their use, meaning, makers, setting, and variance, or what they share as an expressive potential of all humans. In this conference, specialists in diverse scriptural and semiological systems explore semasiography, the phenomenon of non-linguistic forms of graphic communication organized into patterned, often codified ways. Talks address the techniques and systems employed in such mark-making, the media and modes of representation, and the uses and limitations of symbols and graphemes. The overall objective is to underscore the vitality of such visible signs at all times and periods, and to delight in their wondrous variety. November 5, 2016 Brown University

It tells the story of Henry Higgins, a professor of phonetics (based on phonetician Henry Sweet), who makes a bet with his friend Colonel Pickering that he can successfully pass off a Cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, as a refined society lady by teaching her how to speak with an upper class accent and training her in etiquette. In the process, Higgins and Doolittle grow close, but she ultimately rejects his domineering ways and declares she will marry Freddy Eynsford-Hill – a young, poor, gentleman. - The play was later the basis for the successful movie adaptation "My Fair Lady" with Audrey Hepburn as Eliza and Rex Harrison as Prof. Higgins. Creating a support infrastructure for over 500 online and web-enhanced faculty at the SDCCD with only three instructional designers available has been something of a challenge. We’ll share some of our successes, such as: a dedicated support team for online and web-enhanced faculty, a comprehensive online training course for faculty teaching online, and baked-in support for accessibility and universal design in all of our online offerings, and challenges, for example how we deal with: limited resources and staffing, faculty resistance to instructional technology in general and online education in particular, in providing support to online teaching faculty.

In the beginning of the Golden Age, American radio network programs were almost exclusively broadcast live, as the national networks prohibited the airing of recorded programs until the late 1940s because of the inferior sound quality of phonograph discs, the only practical recording medium. As a result, prime-time shows would be performed twice, once for each coast. However, "reference recordings" were made of many programs as they were being broadcast, for review by the sponsor and for the network's own archival purposes. With the development of high-fidelity magnetic wire and tape recording in the years following World War II, the networks became more open to airing recorded programs and the prerecording of shows became more common. Local stations, however, had always been free to use recordings and sometimes made substantial use of prerecorded syndicated programs distributed on pressed (as opposed to individually recorded) transcription discs. Recording was done using a cutting lathe and acetate discs. Programs were normally recorded at 33⅓ rpm on 16 inch discs, the standard format used for such "electrical transcriptions" from the early 1930s through the 1950s. Sometimes, the groove was cut starting at the inside of the disc and running to the outside. This was useful when the program to be recorded was longer than 15 minutes so required more than one disc side. By recording the first side outside in, the second inside out, and so on, the sound quality at the disc change-over points would match and result in a more seamless playback. An inside start also had the advantage that the thread of material cut from the disc's surface, which had to be kept out of the path of the cutting stylus, was naturally thrown toward the center of the disc so was automatically out of the way. When cutting an outside start disc, a brush could be used to keep it out of the way by sweeping it toward the middle of the disc. Well-equipped recording lathes used the vacuum from a water aspirator to pick it up as it was cut and deposit it in a water-filled bottle. In addition to convenience, this served a safety purpose, as the cellulose nitrate thread was highly flammable and a loose accumulation of it combusted violently if ignited. Most recordings of radio broadcasts were made at a radio network's studios, or at the facilities of a network-owned or affiliated station, which might have four or more lathes. A small local station often had none. Two lathes were required to capture a program longer than 15 minutes without losing parts of it while discs were flipped over or changed, along with a trained technician to operate them and monitor the recording while it was being made. However, some surviving recordings were produced by local stations.[7][8] When a substantial number of copies of an electrical transcription were required, as for the distribution of a syndicated program, they were produced by the same process used to make ordinary records. A master recording was cut, then electroplated to produce a stamper from which pressings in vinyl (or, in the case of transcription discs pressed before about 1935, shellac) were molded in a record press. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_time_radio

Calling All Cars: Banker Bandit / The Honor Complex / Desertion Leads to Murder

01:28:09
The radio show Calling All Cars hired LAPD radio dispacher Jesse Rosenquist to be the voice of the dispatcher. Rosenquist was already famous because home radios could tune into early police radio frequencies. As the first police radio dispatcher presented to the public ear, his was the voice that actors went to when called upon for a radio dispatcher role. The iconic television series Dragnet, with LAPD Detective Joe Friday as the primary character, was the first major media representation of the department. Real LAPD operations inspired Jack Webb to create the series and close cooperation with department officers let him make it as realistic as possible, including authentic police equipment and sound recording on-site at the police station. Due to Dragnet's popularity, LAPD Chief Parker "became, after J. Edgar Hoover, the most well known and respected law enforcement official in the nation". In the 1960s, when the LAPD under Chief Thomas Reddin expanded its community relations division and began efforts to reach out to the African-American community, Dragnet followed suit with more emphasis on internal affairs and community policing than solving crimes, the show's previous mainstay. Several prominent representations of the LAPD and its officers in television and film include Adam-12, Blue Streak, Blue Thunder, Boomtown, The Closer, Colors, Crash, Columbo, Dark Blue, Die Hard, End of Watch, Heat, Hollywood Homicide, Hunter, Internal Affairs, Jackie Brown, L.A. Confidential, Lakeview Terrace, Law & Order: Los Angeles, Life, Numb3rs, The Shield, Southland, Speed, Street Kings, SWAT, Training Day and the Lethal Weapon, Rush Hour and Terminator film series. The LAPD is also featured in the video games Midnight Club II, Midnight Club: Los Angeles, L.A. Noire and Call of Juarez: The Cartel. The LAPD has also been the subject of numerous novels. Elizabeth Linington used the department as her backdrop in three different series written under three different names, perhaps the most popular being those novel featuring Det. Lt. Luis Mendoza, who was introduced in the Edgar-nominated Case Pending. Joseph Wambaugh, the son of a Pittsburgh policeman, spent fourteen years in the department, using his background to write novels with authentic fictional depictions of life in the LAPD. Wambaugh also created the Emmy-winning TV anthology series Police Story. Wambaugh was also a major influence on James Ellroy, who wrote several novels about the Department set during the 1940s and 1950s, the most famous of which are probably The Black Dahlia, fictionalizing the LAPD's most famous "cold case", and L.A. Confidential, which was made into a film of the same name. Both the novel and the film chronicled mass-murder and corruption inside and outside the force during the Parker era. Critic Roger Ebert indicates that the film's characters (from the 1950s) "represent the choices ahead for the LAPD": assisting Hollywood limelight, aggressive policing with relaxed ethics, and a "straight arrow" approach. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LAPD

The Great Gildersleeve: Iron Reindeer / Christmas Gift for McGee / Leroy's Big Dog

01:28:51
The Great Gildersleeve (1941--1957), initially written by Leonard Lewis Levinson, was one of broadcast history's earliest spin-off programs. Built around Throckmorton Philharmonic Gildersleeve, a character who had been a staple on the classic radio situation comedy Fibber McGee and Molly, first introduced on Oct. 3, 1939, ep. #216. The Great Gildersleeve enjoyed its greatest success in the 1940s. Actor Harold Peary played the character during its transition from the parent show into the spin-off and later in a quartet of feature films released at the height of the show's popularity. On Fibber McGee and Molly, Peary's Gildersleeve was a pompous windbag who became a consistent McGee nemesis. "You're a haa-aa-aa-aard man, McGee!" became a Gildersleeve catchphrase. The character was given several conflicting first names on Fibber McGee and Molly, and on one episode his middle name was revealed as Philharmonic. Gildy admits as much at the end of "Gildersleeve's Diary" on the Fibber McGee and Molly series (Oct. 22, 1940). Premiering on August 31, 1941, The Great Gildersleeve moved the title character from the McGees' Wistful Vista to Summerfield, where Gildersleeve now oversaw his late brother-in-law's estate and took on the rearing of his orphaned niece and nephew, Marjorie (originally played by Lurene Tuttle and followed by Louise Erickson and Mary Lee Robb) and Leroy Forester (Walter Tetley). The household also included a cook named Birdie. Curiously, while Gildersleeve had occasionally spoken of his (never-present) wife in some Fibber episodes, in his own series the character was a confirmed bachelor. In a striking forerunner to such later television hits as Bachelor Father and Family Affair, both of which are centered on well-to-do uncles taking in their deceased siblings' children, Gildersleeve was a bachelor raising two children while, at first, administering a girdle manufacturing company ("If you want a better corset, of course, it's a Gildersleeve") and then for the bulk of the show's run, serving as Summerfield's water commissioner, between time with the ladies and nights with the boys. The Great Gildersleeve may have been the first broadcast show to be centered on a single parent balancing child-rearing, work, and a social life, done with taste and genuine wit, often at the expense of Gildersleeve's now slightly understated pomposity. Many of the original episodes were co-written by John Whedon, father of Tom Whedon (who wrote The Golden Girls), and grandfather of Deadwood scripter Zack Whedon and Joss Whedon (creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly and Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog). The key to the show was Peary, whose booming voice and facility with moans, groans, laughs, shudders and inflection was as close to body language and facial suggestion as a voice could get. Peary was so effective, and Gildersleeve became so familiar a character, that he was referenced and satirized periodically in other comedies and in a few cartoons. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Gildersleeve

Poe is best known for his poetry and short stories, particularly his tales of mystery and the macabre. He is widely regarded as a central figure of Romanticism in the United States and American literature as a whole, and he was one of the country's earliest practitioners of the short story. Poe is generally considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre and is further credited with contributing to the emerging genre of science fiction. He was the first well-known American writer to try to earn a living through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career.Poe was born in Boston, the second child of two actors. His father abandoned the family in 1810, and his mother died the following year. Thus orphaned, the child was taken in by John and Frances Allan of Richmond, Virginia. They never formally adopted him, but Poe was with them well into young adulthood. Tension developed later as John Allan and Poe repeatedly clashed over debts, including those incurred by gambling, and the cost of secondary education for Poe. He attended the University of Virginia but left after a year due to lack of money. Poe quarreled with Allan over the funds for his education and enlisted in the Army in 1827 under an assumed name. It was at this time that his publishing career began, albeit humbly, with the anonymous collection Tamerlane and Other Poems (1827), credited only to "a Bostonian". With the death of Frances Allan in 1829, Poe and Allan reached a temporary rapprochement. However, Poe later failed as an officer cadet at West Point, declaring a firm wish to be a poet and writer, and he ultimately parted ways with John Allan. Poe switched his focus to prose and spent the next several years working for literary journals and periodicals, becoming known for his own style of literary criticism. His work forced him to move among several cities, including Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York City. In Richmond in 1836, he married Virginia Clemm, his 13-year-old cousin. In January 1845, Poe published his poem "The Raven" to instant success. His wife died of tuberculosis two years after its publication. For years, he had been planning to produce his own journal The Penn (later renamed The Stylus), though he died before it could be produced. Poe died in Baltimore on October 7, 1849, at age 40; the cause of his death is unknown and has been variously attributed to alcohol, "brain congestion", cholera, drugs, heart disease, rabies, suicide, tuberculosis, and other agents.Poe and his works influenced literature in the United States and around the world, as well as in specialized fields such as cosmology and cryptography. Poe and his work appear throughout popular culture in literature, music, films, and television. A number of his homes are dedicated museums today. The Mystery Writers of America present an annual award known as the Edgar Award for distinguished work in the mystery genre.
