South Africa's Illegal Gold Mines

10:37
In the 1970s, South Africa was the world's most prolific exporter of gold. Over the years, industrial decline has seen widespread closures of the mines across the country. However, Johannesburg sits on the biggest gold basin ever discovered. It's perhaps not surprising that many of these abandoned mines have seen a recent boom in illegal mining activity. Everyday, hundreds of illegal gold miners, known as Zama Zamas, descend kilometers deep beneath the surface. The miners often spend weeks underground, toiling away at the country's untapped gold reserves. Observers have suggested that illegal mining is now so widespread, black-market gold arguably supports the communities once subsistent on the very same mines they worked in before they shut down. The lack of policing in the mines has seen the practice go on largely unabated. However, in the absence of law enforcement, the extensive network of abandoned mines beneath the region has become an arena to deadly gang warfare between rival factions. VICE News visited illegal mines near Johannesburg, to meet the Zama Zamas risking life and limb everyday in the violent struggle for South Africa's illegal gold. SOUTH AFRICA: GOLD MINING

03:08
English/Nat International gold sales recently plunged the price of the precious metal to a 22-year low. Despite protests from all quarters the sales are set to continue leaving the future of tens of thousands of South African miners hanging in the balance. This week South Africa's second largest gold miner, Gold Fields Ltd, announced that a strike against retrenchments at one of its mines may spread to other sites. When Britain sold 25 tons of gold recently, it set the price plummeting and some of South Africa's less profitable mines were forced to give notice of lay offs. Britain is scheduled to sell another 100 tons of gold by the end of this year. Recent protests by both South African mine companies and mineworkers unions appear to have fallen on deaf ears. The South African National Union of Mineworkers warned that if the gold price remains below 260 dollars an ounce, it would mean that 80-thousand gold miners would lose their jobs.. It's estimated that each miner supports another 10 people, so this loss could affect around 800-thousand South Africans livelihoods. Joe Funga has worked at the West Driefontein Mine for 17 years. A member of the mainly white Mineworkers Union, he has already made enquiries about his union's programme for laid off miners. Like other miners who live in company houses, Funga only pays 1.70 dollars a month to live in his house with his wife and two children. And if his job goes, so does his home. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I'm not feeling very happy about it because the whole issue is, what do you call it, got an effect on our families and got an effect on the people in the shafts, from a miner to an omsetter (fitter and turner) and the artisans as well." SUPER CAPTION: Joe Funga, Gold Miner Funga starts work at 4a-m where he is in charge of three gangs of about 10 miners each. For them the mine's tunnels are their world and they've long accepted the inhospitable conditions. It also provides them with a livelihood in a country wracked by unemployment. For at least eight hours a day Funga joins his colleagues and descends 800 metres under the earth where they retrieve the rock that produces gold. Since July 15th workers at another mine in the Free State province workers have downed tools and brought production to a complete halt. They are protesting the imminent laying off of 600 workers. Next week a neighbouring mine, Beatrix may also join the strike in support of its colleagues. For another Gold Mine it seems that it's already too late. E-R-P-M east of Johannesburg, is set to close and 5-thousand workers will lose their jobs. Back at Crown Mine one of Funga's workmates, Sabata Moeane is a member of the mainly black National Union of Mineworkers. Recently he's also been investigating alternative employment possibilities should he be laid off. The National Union of Mineworkers is suggesting ways of laid-off miners becoming self-employed should they lose their jobs. With South Africa's high rate of unemployment, it may be the only solution for people like Moeane and Funga. Moeane has been working on the mine for ten years and lives near the mine site with his wife and four children, also in a company house. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I think at this point in time we are really in a catastrophic position because the gold price has declined tremendously and that can cost our jobs." SUPER CAPTION: Sabata Moeane, Gold Miner Miners such as Joe Funga and Sabata Moeane can only hope that their jobs will survive the the current Gold crisis. Exploring the multiplier effect of Mauritania's only gold mine

12:19
Kinross Gold's Tasiast Mine is Mauritania's only gold mine and 90 per cent of its workforce are targeted from areas surrounding the mine and from across the country. Also at play is the setting up of procurement partnerships with communities in the region. There's no doubt that a mining concession brings huge benefits to a country and it’s GDP through taxes & concession fees. However, beyond this, job creation and the up-skilling of locals is an additional priority. It's Africa's Time visited to explore this public private partnership, its commitment to best practice environmental standards, and the impact it is having on Mauritania and its people.

Why West African Truckers Can't Do Their Job

19:18
West African truck drivers spend days, weeks, and sometimes months dealing with corrupt border officials and illegal checkpoints on harrowing delivery trips that should take just a few hours. All of which turns shipments which would take a few hours in Europe or America into grueling, day to week to monthlong affairs punctuated by long and unpredictable periods of complete standstill. Which, in addition to wasting fuel and driving up the cost of goods with every unplanned stop, also fuels the sort of boredom that can only be fought by dumping money into the less savory sectors of the economy. Namely booze sales and roadside prostitution. Which is where the AIDS come in. Intrigued by the African long-haul trucker's dual reputation as the foundational building block of West Africa's would-be robust economy and lotharious Johnny AIDS-leseed, we hitched a ride with a trailer full of soap to see just how hard it is to get from point-A to point-basically-A-and-a-half. Blood Diamonds and Religious War: Diamonds and Division

10:39
The Central African Republic is one of the poorest countries in the world, but it is also rich in natural resources. One of the official mining sectors has collapsed amid the country’s ongoing conflict, and now both sides are benefitting from the illicit trade of gold and diamonds. Clashes over control of the many mines have also created religious tension in places where there previously had been none. VICE News traveled to mines located in the heart of the Central African Republic to see how the battle over natural resources is playing out in one of the world’s most violent conflicts. Top 10 Biggest Economies in Africa in 2018 by GDP

12:25
The richest economies in Africa have been revealed by the World Economic Forum through the data provided by the from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The full annual list, which was published in April 2018, analyses the "identifiable wealth" of all the countries in the world through the current prices of Gross Domestic Product, GDP. As it is known, the GDP is a monetary measure of the market value of all final goods and services produced in a period of time. See the 10 biggest economies in Africa, ranked in ascending order by wealth. 10. Cote d’Ivoire - $48.14 billion Cote d’Ivoire comes 10th with a total of $48.14 billion as the country’s GDP as at April 2018. Ivory Coast is among the world's largest producers and exporters of coffee, cocoa beans, and palm oil. Consequently, the economy is highly sensitive to fluctuations in international prices for these products and to weather conditions. 9. Ghana - $51.62 billion Ghana follows Cote d’Ivoire on the list with $51.62 billion according to the data from International Monetary Fund. Ghana is Africa's second-biggest gold producer and second-largest cocoa producer. It is also rich in diamonds and oil but in recent years, plunging oil prices have precipitated an economic crisis. 8. Tanzania - $56.66 billion Tanzania holds the eight position with a total of $56.66 billion as the country’s GDP. Tanzania is largely dependent on agriculture for employment, accounting for about half of the employed workforce. 7. Ethiopia - $85.66 billion Standing tall at the seventh position with $85.66 billion is Ethiopia. The country leads Tanzania with a total of $26 billion. Ethiopia’s economy is concentrated in the services and agriculture sectors. 6. Kenya - $88.27 billion Kenya holds on to the sixth position with a total GDP of $88.27 billion. The country is generally perceived as Eastern and central Africa's hub for Financial, Communication and Transportation services. 5. Angola - $119.43 billion Angola takes the difference in the country’s GDP to a new level with a total GDP of $119.43 billion. Angola occupies the fifth position on the list. For Angola, Subsistence agriculture provides the main livelihood for 85% of the population. Oil production and the supporting activities are vital to the economy, contributing about 45% to GDP and 90% of exports. 4. Morocco - $121 billion Angola is followed by Morocco which occupies the fourth position on the list with an interesting $121 billion as GDP. In Morocco, sales of fish and seafood join the industrial and mining sectors to contribute about one-third of the annual GDP. Morocco is the world's third-largest producer of phosphates and the price fluctuations of phosphates on the international market greatly influence Morocco's economy. 3. Algeria - $197.63 billion Number three on the list is Algeria with a GDP of $197.63 billion. Though the economy has diversified, the country's economy relies greatly on hydrocarbons (petroleum and natural gas). 2. South Africa - $370.89 billion Distinguishing itself on the table and holding on to the second position is South Africa. The country’s economy is valued with a GDP of $370.89 billion according to the IMF. The country has a mixed type of economy and tourism is one of the biggest revenue generating industries in South Africa. 1. Nigeria - $408.61 billion With a difference of $37.72 billion, Nigeria’s economy ranked the highest with a total GDP of $408.61. Nigeria is a middle-income, mixed economy and emerging market, with expanding manufacturing, financial, service, communications, technology, and entertainment sectors. In recent time, the agriculture and oil sector have contributed to the country’s economy. MUSIC CREDIT Song: Dizaro - YouMakeMe (Vlog No Copyright Music) Music provided by Vlog No Copyright Music. South Africa Miners call of planned strike

02:23
Miners at South Africa's Anglo American Platinum, Amplats, reported for work on Friday after a planned strike was called off on Thursday night. Amplats spokeswoman Mpumi Sithole said all workers had reported for the morning shift at the world's biggest platinum miner and that there had been no trouble. Unions and worker committees had threatened to start a strike on Thursday night in protest at plans by Amplats to cut as many as 6,000 jobs to try to restore the company to profitability. The threats sent the company's shares to an eight year low of 286 rand on Thursday, close to half this year's high of 508.99 rand in January.
