Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat (The Lumière Brothers, 1895)

00:50
Original Title: L'Arrivée d'un Train à la Ciotat Directors: Auguste and Louis Lumière Year: 1895 The first public exhibition of motion pictures occurred on 28th December 1895 when August Lumière and Louis Lumière (the Lumière Brothers) exhibited a selection of ten of their single-reel films to a paying audience at a Parisian cafe. 'Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat' is considered to be the first motion picture in modern history (altough more an experiment from the Lumière-brothers to use their 'invention' of film, it shows a train arriving at a passenger station). Popular legend has it that, when this film was shown, the first-night audience fled the cafe in terror, fearing being run over by the "approaching" train. Most of the cast were members of the Lumière family and employees from the Lumière factory.

Åsa Nisse 1949 den första filmen hela

01:30:59

00:48
Lumiere Film Catalog no. 104 Breve Storia del Cinema - Il cinematografo Lumière: http://www.brevestoriadelcinema.org/02-il-cinema-delle-origini/ Two boxers climb into barrels and proceed to pummel each other in this novelty film from the Lumières. The composition of this picture is simple, but effective; all the action takes place within the frame and the boxing is very crude and funny. One of the boxers pounds on the other, who ducks his head into the barrel, which makes the barrel tip and fall. It's surprising and amusing. Given that a lot of Lumière films are pictures of dignified public events --parades in uniform and politicians shaking hands with each other -- a lot are ethnographically interesting -- films of African tribes dancing and French peasants farming -- and others are studies in composition and movement -- trains, panoramas, and the Brooklyn Bridge -- silly stuff like this broadened a program.

28 Up - Part 1 - Up Series Documentary (1984)

20:35
"Give me a child until he is seven and I will give you the man" This Jesuit motto is based on a quotation by Francis Xavier, and forms the basis of the Up Series, a documentary film that focuses on the lives of 14 children from a range of socio-economic backgrounds in the UK. The series began in 1964, when the children were 7, and has gone on to include a further 7 episodes (one every even years), meaning it currently spans 49 years. The children were selected to represent the range of socio-economic backgrounds in Britain at that time, with the explicit assumption that each child's social class predetermines their future In a 2005 Channel 4 program, the series topped the list of The 50 Greatest Documentaries. Roger Ebert decalred that it is "an inspired, even noble, use of the film medium", that the films "penetrate to the central mystery of life", and that the series is among his top ten films of all time. In a list of the 100 Greatest British Television Programmes drawn up by the British Film Institute in 2000, voted for by industry professionals, 28 Up was placed 26th. Whilst the series began as a political documentary, it evolved into an existential look at the rhythm of people's lives. In the director's commentary for 42 Up, Apted comments that he did not realise the series had changed tone from political to personal until 21 Up, when he showed the film to American friends who encouraged him to submit it to American film festivals. Apted also comments that this realisation was a relief to him and allowed the films to breathe a little more. "The starkest example of things not going well was Neil Hughes. He went from bright-eyed schoolboy to homeless drifter, and spent much of his 20s and 30s scratching a living in London and the Shetlands. By 49 Up he had found a sort of peace in Cumbria, was active in local politics and in 2010 stood for the Lib Dems in Carlisle. His is the strangest and most extreme of the lives portrayed in the series." (Guardian.com) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Up_Series

The Sprinkler Sprinkled (1895) - 1st Comedy Movie - LOUIS LUMIERE - L'Arroseur Arrose

01:13
The world's 1st comedy, The Sprinkler Sprinkled (also known as L'Arroseur Arrosé and The Waterer Watered) was shot in Lyon in the spring of 1895. The film portrays a simple practical joke in which a gardener is tormented by a boy who steps on the hose that the gardener is using to water his plants, cutting off the water flow. When the gardener tilts the nozzle up to inspect it, the boy releases the hose, causing the water to spray him. The gardener is stunned and his hat is knocked off, but he soon catches on. A chase ensues, both on and off-screen (the camera never moves from its original position) until the gardener catches the boy and administers a spanking. Louis Lumière used his own gardener, François Clerc, to portray the gardener. The first public screening of films at which admission was charged was held on December 28, 1895, at Salon Indien du Grand Café in Paris. This presentation by the Lumière brothers featured ten short movies, including L'arroseur arrosé, which played sixth.

00:42

[FULL] Berlin: Symphony of a Great City (Berlin: Die Sinfonie der Großstadt)

01:01:53
This is Walter Ruttmann's classic 1927 film, Berlin: Die Sinfonie der Großstadt (also called Symphony of a Great City). It is one of the first films of its type, unrivaled in greatness until Koyaanisqatsi and Baraka. And your sound IS working - it's a silent film. There were several scores written for it later, but the original has no sound at all. I recommend you play some Philip Glass, ambient, or something minimalist if you want some noise to go with it. Enjoy. This film is entirely in the public domain and is free for everyone to download at http://www.archive.org/details/BerlinSymphonyofaGreatCity .

35th Anniversary Retrospective // Nov. 10-13

01:57
produced by Corey Boling Ethnographic Cinema: 35 Years and Counting At its very first event, the Margaret Mead Film Festival showcased the work of Jean Rouch, a seminal figure in the history of visual anthropology and of cinema as an art form. Born in France in 1917, Rouch found his voice among the people of Nigeria, documenting their lives in respectful and innovative ways. The series on Rouch included his ten-year-old feature Jaguar, whose untethered camera brought the viewer into the action. With this film, he also transcended an apparent limitation—the unavailability of portable sync-sound equipment—to put the power of portrayal into hands of the subjects themselves, spurring a revolution in visual ethnography and the wider world of movies. Since that first festival in 1977, the Mead has striven to identify films made not only with the spirit of its namesake Margaret Mead, who broke ground incorporating moving images into the field of anthropology, but also of Jean Rouch and the heirs of his transformative methods. It is not surprising then to find classics of ethnographic filmmaking in the Mead archives. In addition to screening Rouch's Jaguar, this year's 35th Anniversary Retrospective Series presents a program of short films on trance rituals and several feature documentaries from the Festival's past: N!ai: The Story of a !Kung Woman by John Marshall, whose collection of films about the people of the Kalahari are part of UNESCO's Memory of the World Registry; A Wife among Wives from David and Judith MacDougall's Turkana Conversations Trilogy, a series of participatory films made among a nomadic tribe in Kenya; and Alanis Obomsawin's Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance, which took ethnography beyond participation into activism. As the Festival looks back, it also endeavors to look forward, seeking out thoughtful and daring works by the next set of nonfiction cinema pioneers. Join the Mead for these landmark works, as we celebrate the past 35 years, and counting.

CE Projects History of Moving Pictures

04:49
Transcript Today, movies are a part of all of our lives, but they haven't always been. In fact, the history of the world's biggest entertainment industry is really quite short. The first moving pictures were shown on 'The Lumière Cinematograph' on December 28, 1895 in a Paris café. That day the Lumière brothers showed The Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat Station, on their special machine. Afterwards, one brother said to reporters that he thought that movies would never become popular. He was completely wrong! In less than a year, cinemas had started to open in Europe and the USA. People loved the movies. By 1905 movie making wasn't just an idea, it was a successful new industry, and soon after, it had a capital -- Hollywood, USA. Hollywood was established in 1912 when a group of New York film makers decided to open a studio in California. They chose California because the weather was good (it didn't rain much there), and there were many beautiful places nearby to film their movies. Hollywood quickly attracted many actors and technicians from all over the country. At first, movies were "silent" because there was no recorded sound. Instead, the actors' dialog was shown on cards every 20 seconds. One director at the time said, "There will never be speaking pictures." He, like the Lumière brother, was wrong. In 1927 a revolution began. It was in this year that the actor Al Jolson spoke and sang in a movie for the first time. The reaction of the movie audience was very enthusiastic; they wanted more "talkies"! Soon, movie audiences had increased from 57 million people a week to 110 million a week. Only 31 years after the Lumières' first film showing, movies were a huge source of entertainment for people around the world. In 1932 there was another big change in movies: Technicolor. Color made movies more popular than ever. The next 20 years are often called Hollywood's 'golden age'. In the '30s and '40s, millions of people went to the cinema every week, so it was a golden time for Hollywood. However, in the late '40s, movies had a new and dangerous competition: TV. America's TV revolution began after World War II. John Logie Baird invented the television, and at first Hollywood didn't worry about it because it was small and only showed pictures in black and white. However, by the early '50s movie audiences had been cut by half because people were watching TV. The movie industry had a serious problem. Hollywood studios competed with TV by trying to make movies bigger, better and more realistic. Some of their ideas succeeded -- others failed. Interestingly, what really saved the movie industry wasn't a technical development at all; it was something completely different -- teenagers. In the mid-'50s, teenagers started going to see movies. Before this time, most movie audience members were over 30. Suddenly that changed. That change has continued ever since. These days 75% of all movie tickets are sold to people between the ages of 15 and 25. Today, TV and cinema live side-by-side. The movie industry didn't die after the invention of the TV, but movie audiences are still low compared to 60 years ago. Because of this, movie making is very different than it was in the golden age. Movies today actually have three lives: first in the theater, second on DVD and finally on TV. However, one thing hasn't changed, whether in the theater or at home, people still love watching movies.

The Judy Canova Show - Judy Dejected Over Humphrey Cooper (January 10, 1948)

30:19
Judy Canova (November 20, 1913 – August 5, 1983), born Juliette Canova, was an American comedienne, actress, singer, and radio personality. She appeared on Broadway and in films. She hosted her own network radio program, a popular series broadcast from 1943 to 1955. When bandleader Rudy Vallée offered her a guest spot on his radio show in 1931, The Fleischmann Hour, the door opened to a career that spanned more than five decades. The popularity of the Canova family led to numerous performances on radio in the 1930s, and they made their Broadway theater debut in the revue Calling All Stars. An offer from Warner Bros. led to several bit parts before she signed with Republic Pictures. She recorded for the RCA Victor label and appeared in more than two dozen Hollywood films, playing leading roles as well as supporting parts, including Scatterbrain (1940), Joan of Ozark (1942), and Lay That Rifle Down (1955). The Canovas as they appeared on The Chase and Sanborn Hour in 1938 - from left: Judy, Zeke, and Annie In 1943, she began her own radio program, The Judy Canova Show, that ran for twelve years—first on CBS and then on NBC. Playing herself as a love-starved Ozark bumpkin dividing her time between home and Southern California, Canova was accompanied by a cast that included voicemaster Mel Blanc as Pedro (using the accented voice he later gave the cartoons' Speedy Gonzales) and Sylvester (using the voice that later became associated with the Looney Tunes character), Ruth Perrott as Aunt Aggie, Ruby Dandridge as Geranium, Joseph Kearns as Benchley Botsford and Sharon Douglas as Brenda—with Gale Gordon, Sheldon Leonard, and Hans Conried also making periodic appearances. The Sportsmen Quartet joined the show in 1943 and backed Judy on most of her songs, and the Charles Dant Orchestra provided the rest, usually supporting Canova's country warble. Western singer and actor Eddie Dean also appeared with Canova on numerous occasions during the 1930s. During World War II, she closed her show with the song "Goodnight, Soldier" ("Wherever you may be... my heart's lonely... without you") and used her free time to sell U.S. War Bonds. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer employs the music in the mostly dialogue-free "Hush" It serves as the theme song to the British murder-mystery series Jonathan Creek starring Alan Davies. A key scene[clarification needed] in Jean Renoir's 1939 film The Rules of the Game uses the song. Mickey Mouse Works uses the song for the Silly Symphonies version of Hansel and Gretel, starring Mickey and Minnie. The American film Tombstone; Danse macabre accompanies a stage production of the story of Faust. An episode of the TV series Grimm is titled "Danse Macabre" and features the song played several times by a young troubled violin virtuoso in a recital rehearsal. The movie Hugo uses the song in a flashback scene, being played at a screening of L'Arrivée d'un train en gare de La Ciotat. The BBC TV Series The Magicians uses the basic melody in its theme music, by Paul Farrer. The Dutch amusement park Efteling uses it as the background theme for their haunted castle. A record containing this song is used to solve a puzzle in the original Alone in the Dark game. In theater, Henrik Ibsen uses this song in his play John Gabriel Borkman. The title character of the play Hedda Gabler plays it right before she kills herself. Jeffery Hatcher's theatrical production of The Turn of the Screw incorporates "Danse Macabre" in a scene as a way to increase tension and uneasiness. The actor playing Miles must hum or sing the piece over a monologue which is spoken by the Governess. The "rock orchestra", Esperanto, titled their third album Dance Macabre, and its final track included a version of Saint-Saëns' piece. It was also used for the 2011 BBC Proms by Horrible Histories, to illustrate the level of death during the Middle Ages in Britain. It is the background music of the Carnival level in the game 102 Dalmatians: Puppies to the Rescue for PlayStation. 2010 Olympic figure skating champion Yuna Kim used Danse Macabre as the music for her short program for the 2008--2009 season. At the World Championships, Kim achieved a world record score for the program, and went on to place first at the event. Please comment , like and share .. Please !

David Ewalt: "Defying Reality: The Inside Story of the Virtual Reality Revolution" | Talks at Google

49:04
Technology has often progressed in leaps and bounds, with life-altering consequences for humankind, from the telegraph to the television set to the internet. Today we are confronted by the rise of virtual reality, aka VR. No longer just a mainstay of science fiction, VR has seen recent success with companies such as Oculus, Sony, and HTC -- but little is known about its history, which reaches back decades. In a new book, journalist and expert David Ewalt chronicles its origins in Cold War military laboratories, and traces it through decades of hype and failed products, to a nineteen-year-old video game aficionado from California whose advancements made the recent breakthroughs in VR possible. Turning to the future, Ewalt investigates the Silicon Valley giants who are now creating a new hundred-billion-dollar industry. Starting as a cover story for Forbes, Ewalt’s DEFYING REALITY: The Inside Story of the Virtual Reality Revolution goes more in depth than his original article ever could, telling a tale of booms and busts, of fortunes built and lost, and one teenage genius who succeeded where everyone else had failed. Ewalt offers a unique perspective on how VR got here, where it's going, and how and why it will change the way we live. Rife with first-hand accounts and on-the-ground reporting, DEFYING REALITY makes the argument that virtual reality has the potential to impact every aspect of our social and independent lives, from gaming and entertainment to commerce, to medicine and warfare. Variações sobre um tema - Imagem em movimento

08:18
Television began replacing parenting to a significant degree back when it was created and generations since have become more and more dependent on media, no matter its evolving forms. What kind of programming are people really tuning into in the end? and to what extent? How many are aware that they themselves are actually being programmed? I know i was and it took quite some time and inner work to de-program myself.. There's a lot of calls to throw your tv 's out the window in this mix.. Stay Tuned..... (to the divine) Broadcasting from La Ciotat PEACE
