Various shots of the headless Buddha statues 20. Wide shot of the site 21. Various shots of labours eating 22. Various shots of decorated ancient buildings 23. SOUNDBITE: (Pashto) Afghan labourer, Rozi Khan: "Chinese finished all our farming and lands, they had promised us to pay us compensation, but so far we haven't got anything." 24. Various shots of Chinese worker's camp in Mes Aynak (copper mine) 25. Various shots of the copper mine mountains' shots LEADIN China's plans to invest in a copper mine in Afghanistan are threatening a site of historic interest. Archaeologists are racing against time to salvage what they can from what was a major 7th Century B.C. religious site along the famed Silk Road connecting Asia and the Middle East. The ancient ruins are likely be largely destroyed once work at the mine begins. STORYLINE Mes Aynak is caught in a conflict between Afghanistan's history and hopes of building its future. The proposed copper mine is the centrepiece of China's drive to invest in Afghanistan, a country trying to get its economy off the ground while still mired in war. Beijing's $3.5 billion stake in the mine _ the largest foreign investment in Afghanistan by far _ gets its foot in the door for future lucrative deals to exploit Afghanistan's largely untapped mineral wealth, including iron, gold, iron, and cobalt. The Afghan government stands to reap a potential $1.2 billion a year in revenues from the mine, as well as the creation of much-needed jobs. Hanging over the situation is the memory of the Buddhas of Bamyan _ statues towering up to 180 feet high in central Afghanistan that were dynamited to the ground in 2001 by the country's then-rulers, the Taliban, who considered them symbols of paganism. No one wants to be blamed for similarly razing history at Mes Aynak, in the eastern province of Logar. The Chinese government-backed China Metallurgical Group Corp., or MCC, wanted to start building the mine by the end of 2011. But under an informal understanding with the Kabul government, it has has given archaeologists three years for a salvage excavation. Archaeologists working on the site since May say that won't be enough time. Around 15 Afghan archaeologists, three French advisers and a few dozen labourers are working within the 2-sq. kilometer (0.77 sq.-mile) area _ a far smaller team than the two dozen archeologists and 100 laborers normally needed for a site of such size and richness. August has come and gone, and excavations at Mes Aynak continue. Trump Finds Reason for the US to Remain in Afghanistan Minerals

09:23
Trump Finds Reason for the U.S. to Remain in Afghanistan Minerals President Trump, searching for a reason to keep the United States in Afghanistan after 16 years of war, has latched on to a prospect that tantalized previous administrations: Afghanistan’s vast mineral wealth, which his advisers and Afghan officials have told him could be profitably extracted by Western companies. Mr. Trump has discussed the country’s mineral deposits with President Ashraf Ghani, who promoted mining as an economic opportunity in one of their first conversations. Mr. Trump, who is deeply skeptical about sending more American troops to Afghanistan, has suggested that this could be one justification for the United States to stay engaged in the country.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Wahidullah Shahrani, Afghan Minister of Mines: "Enormous financial benefits to the government of Afghanistan in the form of the revenues, as you heard from me earlier that the deal has been very much in the favour of Afghanistan in terms of the fiscal benefits. Fifteen percent is the royalty on the gross production of the fuel and seventy percent has been the share of the government from the profit, on top of the income tax or corporate tax on the profit of the company which will go to the government of Afghanistan." 8. Mid of cameras 9. SOUNDBITE: (English) Lu Gong Xun, China National Petroleum Corporation: "Based on my experience, should be around minimum 400 million US dollar for initial investment." 10. Journalists in news conference 11. SOUNDBITE: (English) Lu Gong Xun, China National Petroleum Corporation: "Not only CNPC (China National Petroleum Corporations) also the ministry of mining (is) also willing to start production as soon as possible, so of course we are going to try our best to start production as soon as possible." 12. Close-up of hand writing 13. Cameramen filming STORYLINE: Afghanistan's government concluded a deal on Wednesday with China's state-owned National Petroleum Corporation, allowing it to become the first foreign company to exploit the country's oil and natural gas reserves. The contract, which covers the northeastern provinces of Sari Pul and Faryab, is the first of several such blocks to be put on the market in coming months, Afghan Minister of Mines Wahidullah Shahrani said during the signing ceremony. Bidding information for blocks in neighbouring Balkh province will be released at end of February, and for Herat western province by next summer, he said. The ministry listed the initial value of the project with CNPC as 700 (m) million US dollars. But the total could be ten times greater if more reserves are found and developed, and if international oil prices remain at today's levels, Shahrani said. The fuel pact allows the Chinese firm to research oil and natural gas blocks in the northeastern provinces of Sari Pul and Faryab. The area, known as the Amu Darya River Basin, was first explored by Soviet engineers in the 1960s. Their report estimated the reserves at about 87 (m) million barrels, but both the Afghan and Chinese partners believe they will prove to be much larger. CNPC will also build a refinery - Afghanistan's first - within the next three years, after the real size of the reserves is established with greater accuracy, said Lu Gong Xun, president of CNPC's international branch. Shahrani said the deal calls for the Afghan government to receive 70 percent of the profits from the sale of the oil and natural gas. CNPC will also pay 15 percent in royalties, as well as corporate taxes and rent for the land used for its operations. Afghanistan's army and police will set up special units to guard the project, Shahrani said. The provinces of Sari Pul and Faryab are located hundreds of miles from the centres of fighting in the east and southeast and are considered relatively safe. As a result, the US-led NATO force has already transferred or is turning over responsibility for security in large parts of the region to the Afghan army and police. Surveys conducted by the Soviets have shown that Afghanistan sits on vast mineral wealth. Security of Supply of Mineral Resources Programme

12:47
Security of Supply of Mineral Resources (SoS MinErals) is a multi-million pound research programme, backed by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and the Engineering and Physical Science Research Council, in partnership with industry and academia, and our global partner FAPESP. Global action to protect the environment and to mitigate and adapt to increased atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) is demanding significant changes in the way we generate and use energy. This initiative focuses on the science needed to sustain the security of supply of the strategic elements that underpin current and future green energy technologies — the so-called 'e-tech elements': cobalt (Co), tellurium (Te), slenium (Se), neodymium (Nd), indium (In), gallium (Ga) and heavy rare earth elements (HREE). The programme aims to enhance global security of supply of these e-tech elements in two ways; firstly through improved understanding of e-tech element cycling and concentration in natural systems, and secondly by using this information to develop improved recovery processes from primary sources in order to mitigate the environmental effects of extraction and recovery of e-tech elements. More about the programme at http://www.bgs.ac.uk/sosMinerals/home.html
Cannabis Craftsmanship: How to Make Hash

03:39
https://www.leafly.com Have you ever wondered how the hash you find on dispensary shelves is made or wanted to make it yourself? Recently we visited Sugarleaf Farm in Skagit County, Washington to find out how they make their pressed hash. Mark Brinn, owner of Sugarleaf Farm and Funky Skunk Extracts, walked us through the steps he takes when concentrating cannabis into pressed bricks of hash. Using a modern take on traditional hash-making techniques, Mark creates a concentrate through a process that is entirely mechanical and does not use butane or any other solvents to extract the cannabinoids and terpenes from the cannabis plant. Have you ever made pressed hash? Check out the video for Mark’s step-by-step instructions and share your experience in the comments section below. Dilruba Na Raazi, Zeb Bangash & Faakhir Mehmood, Episode 3, Coke Studio Season 9

06:36
Dilruba Na Raazi, Zeb Bangash & Faakhir Mehmood, Episode 3, Coke Studio Season 9 Originally performed and composed by Fazal Malik Akif Additional Composition and Music directed by Faakhir Mehmood Produced by Strings ‘Dilruba Na Raazi’ is an amalgamation of vibrant, cultural sounds inspired from a Pushto folk tune, combined with an infectious melody that fits the original like a glove. Opening with a soul-stirring chant in Zeb Bangash’s pitch perfect vocals, the music builds up to welcome Faakhir Mehmood in a single that effortlessly merge the contemporary western sounds with a signature Pashtun rhythm. Whilst retaining the nostalgia of the original, music director Faakhir has managed to reform the tune into a festive romantic song with an intricate chord pattern, and free flowing music pieces featuring the accordion and Rubab amongst others, creating a beautifully euphoric track. #CokeStudio9

They're critical components to just about every clean energy technology, from wind turbines to electric vehicles, and the electronic devices we all use. Throughout Unmanned, Greenwald intersperses in-depth interviews with never-before-seen footage from the tribal regions in Pakistan to humanize those who have been impacted by our drone policy. This footage, alongside interviews with Pakistani drone survivors, describes the brutal reality of drone attacks ordered during the Obama Administration. The film highlights the stories of 16 year old Tariq Aziz, killed by a drone a mere week after he participated in a public conference in Islamabad in 2011, and a school teacher, Rafiq ur Rehman, grappling with the loss of his elderly mother and the hospitalization of his children due to a drone strike last year, showing how delicate life can be in this virtual war where no one is accepting responsibility for the casualties. 00:00 Brandon Bryant, Former U.S.A.F. North To Alaska ~ Johnny Horton

03:06
North To Alaska ~ Johnny Horton The Klondike Gold Rush The Klondike Gold Rush was a frenzy of gold rush immigration to and gold prospecting in the Klondike near Dawson City in the Yukon Territory, Canada, after gold was discovered in the late 19th century. In August 1896, three people led by Skookum Jim Mason (a member of the Tagish nation whose birth name was Keish) headed up the Yukon River from the Carcross area looking for his sister Kate and her husband George Carmack. The party included Skookum Jim, Skookum Jim's cousin known as Dawson Charlie (or sometimes Tagish Charlie) and his nephew Patsy Henderson. After meeting up with George and Kate who were fishing for salmon at the mouth of the Klondike River, they ran into Nova Scotian Robert Henderson who had been mining gold on the Indian River, just south of the Klondike. Henderson told George Carmack about where he was mining and that he did not want any "damn Siwashes" (meaning Indians) near him. The group then headed a few miles up the Klondike River to Rabbit Creek, now Bonanza Creek to hunt moose. On August 16, 1896, the party discovered rich placer gold deposits in Bonanza (Rabbit) Creek. It is now generally accepted that Skookum Jim made the actual discovery, but some accounts say that it was Kate Carmack. George Carmack was officially credited for the discovery because the "discovery" claim was staked in his name. The group agreed to this because they felt that other miners would be reluctant to recognise a claim made by an Indian, given the strong racist attitudes of the time. Further evidence of Skookum Jim's discovery is that he was eagerly followed by other miners and caused a mini rush when he later staked some claims in the Kluane Lake area in 1905. The news spread to other mining camps in the Yukon River valley, and the Bonanza, Eldorado and Hunker Creeks were rapidly staked by miners who had been previously working creeks and sandbars on the Fortymile and Stewart Rivers. In a fate that many believe to be poetic justice, Henderson, who was mining only a few miles away over the hill, only found out about the discovery after the rich creeks had been all staked. News reached the United States on July 17, 1897 when the first successful prospectors arrived in Seattle, and within a month the Klondike stampede had begun. The population in the Klondike in 1898 may have reached 40,000, threatening to cause a famine. Most prospectors landed at Skagway at the head of Lynn Canal and crossed by the Chilkoot Trail or White Pass to Bennett Lake. Here, prospectors built boats that would take them the final 500 miles (800 km) down the Yukon River to the gold fields. Stampeders had to carry one ton of goods over the pass to be allowed to enter Canada. At the top of the passes, the stampeders encountered a Mountie post that enforced that regulation. It was put in place to avert shortages like those that had occurred in the previous two winters in Dawson City. The Chilkoot Pass was steep and hazardous, rising a thousand feet in the last half mile (300 m in 800 m). It was too steep for pack animals and prospectors had to pack their equipment and supplies to the top. Some 1,500 steps were carved into the ice to aid travel up the pass. Even though it was not as high, conditions on White Pass were even worse. It was known as the Dead Horse Trail with about 3,000 animals dying along the route. Others took the Copper River Trail or the Teslin Trail by Stikine River and Teslin Lake, and some used the all-Canadian Ashcroft and Edmonton trails. The other main route was by steamer about 2600 kilometers (1600 miles) up the Yukon River. Many using this route late in 1897 were caught by winter ice below Fort Yukon, Alaska and had to be rescued. An estimated 100,000 people participated in the gold rush and about 30,000 made it to Dawson City in 1898. By 1901, when the first census was taken, the population had declined to 9,000. Throughout this period, the North West Mounted Police, under the command of Sam Steele maintained a firm grip on the activities of the prospectors to ensure the safety of the population as well as enforcing the laws and sovereignty of Canada. As a result, this gold rush has been described as the most peaceful and orderly of its type in history. The effectiveness of the Mounties in this period made the police force famous around the world, and ensured the survival of the organization at a time when its continued operation was being debated in the Canadian Parliament. The gold rush remains an important event in the history of the city of Edmonton, which to this day celebrates Klondike Days, an annual summer fair with a Klondike gold rush theme. Among the many to take part in the gold rush was writer Jack London, whose books White Fang and The Call of the Wild were influenced by his northern experiences, and adventurer "Swiftwater" Bill Gates.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain - How to Unlock Weapon Customization

05:27
Weapon Customization is a somewhat hidden feature in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. This guide shows you how to unlock it. Step 1: Beat Side Op #107 "Extract the Legendary Gunsmith". This side op becomes available after story mission 13. It usually doesn't show up right away because there can only be a limited amount of side ops per area at the same time. So keep doing other side ops (especially in the Angola-Zaire Border Region) until it shows up. Step 2: Beat Side Op #108 "Extract the Legendary Gunsmith Again". This should be triggered automatically after side op 107 (return to ACC and it should be available). If it's not available you must keep doing other side ops. For some people it showed up after side ops 06 and 48 were complete. Step 3: Beat Side Op #109 "Extract the Legendary Gunsmith Yet Again". This is the last part of this little quest line. Same as before, complete side op #108 and it will become available. You can now customize weapons in the ACC from your iDroid. Go to the tab "Mother Base" - "Customize" - "Weapons" and choose what type of weapon you want to create. To get new parts you must develop more weapons. The parts of each developed weapon will be available for customization. SUBSCRIBE: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=powerpyx ► Helped you out? Afghanistan is bordered by Pakistan in the south and east; Iran in the west; Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan in the north; and in the far northeast, China. Its territory covers 652,000 square kilometers (252,000 sq mi) and much of it is covered by the Hindu Kush mountain range, which experience very cold winters. The north consists of fertile plains, whilst the south-west consists of deserts where temperatures can get very hot in summers. Kabul serves as the capital and its largest city. Human habitation in Afghanistan dates back to the Middle Paleolithic Era, and the country's strategic location along the Silk Road connected it to the cultures of the Middle East and other parts of Asia. The land has historically been home to various peoples and has witnessed numerous military campaigns, including those by Alexander the Great, Mauryas, Muslim Arabs, Mongols, British, Soviets, and since 2001 by the United States with NATO-allied countries. It has been called "unconquerable" and nicknamed the "graveyard of empires". The land also served as the source from which the Kushans, Hephthalites, Samanids, Saffarids, Ghaznavids, Ghorids, Khaljis, Mughals, Hotaks, Durranis, and others have risen to form major empires. The political history of the modern state of Afghanistan began with the Hotak and Durrani dynasties in the 18th century. In the late 19th century, Afghanistan became a buffer state in the "Great Game" between British India and the Russian Empire. Its border with British India, the Durand Line, was formed in 1893 but it is not recognized by the Afghan government and it has led to strained relations with Pakistan since the latter's independence in 1947. Following the Third Anglo-Afghan War in 1919 the country was free of foreign influence, eventually becoming a monarchy under King Amanullah, until almost 50 years later when Zahir Shah was overthrown and a republic was established. In 1978, after a second coup Afghanistan first became a socialist state and then a Soviet Union protectorate. This evoked the Soviet–Afghan War in the 1980s against mujahideen rebels. By 1996 most of Afghanistan was captured by the Islamic fundamentalist group the Taliban, who ruled most of the country as a totalitarian regime for over five years. The Taliban were forcibly removed by the NATO-led coalition, and a new democratically-elected government political structure was formed. Afghanistan is a unitary presidential Islamic republic with a population of 31 million, mostly composed of ethnic Pashtuns, Tajiks, Hazaras and Uzbeks. It is a member of the United Nations, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the Group of 77, the Economic Cooperation Organization, and the Non-Aligned Movement. Afghanistan's economy is the world's 108th largest, with a GDP of $64.08 billion; the country fares much worse in terms of per-capita GDP (PPP), ranking 167th out of 186 countries in a 2016 report from the International Monetary Fund.
