Thousands of mining jobs are waiting in Western Australia but Aussies don’t want them
Thousands of mining jobs are waiting in Western Australia but Aussies don’t want them: https://www.news.com.au/finance/business/mining/thousands-of-mining-jobs-are-waiting-in-western-australia-but-aussies-dont-want-them/news-story/9abb09bee9c85fc6419597a14e77df3e. Thanks for watching, subscribe for more videos: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCd_ODCcrc4jEWgi4qYyy0wg?sub_confirmation=1  From 2012 to 2016, the mining industry experienced a severe downturn, culling close to 60,000 jobs and making full-time work an almost impossible get. But now, especially in Western Australia and Queensland, the mining industry is on the road to recovery — and companies are begging Aussies to come and work for them. According to the latest data from SEEK, the mining, resource and energy sector has consistently recorded the largest growth in job ads for the past 11 months. The sector is throwing out 32 per cent more job ads now than it was at the same time last year and is posting almost four times more job ads than Australia’s average. But just because mining companies are putting out thousands of ads and offering salaries paying well over $150,000 doesn’t mean Aussies are picking them up. Earlier this week, the CEO of WA’s Chamber of Minerals and Energy backed a migration agreement that would hopefully combat a severe skills shortage in the mining region of the Goldfields. If approved, the Designated Area Migration Agreement would allow overseas workers to be flown over to work in the mines and would make them exempt from the skilled migrants requirement. Chief executive Paul Everingham told the ABC there were more than 1000 vacancies in the Kalgoorlie-Boulder mining sector and said the region was at crisis point.  “You can’t sugar coat that — they’re available now and they’re not being filled, so however you can get them (workers),” Mr Everingham said. “All Australian companies want to employ Australians first, but if there aren’t enough Australians … we have got to remember there’s an infrastructure boom going on in NSW. “So if we have to set up special immigration or work zones, our members would definitely welcome the ability to get access to skilled workers immediately.” The WA mining industry is advertising for thousands of jobs ranging from cleaners to tradesmen to university-educated engineers. But following Mr Everidge’s comments, a number of people involved in the state’s mining industry have said more needs to be done to make relocating an attractive proposition. Despite the huge salaries fly-in fly-out workers earn, most complain of having no work-life balance. FIFO workers typically have higher rates of suicide, struggle with depression due to long hours and loneliness and report higher rates of workplace bullying and alcoholism. In 2015, the West Australian government conducted a 10-month investigation into the state’s FIFO workforce. Lifeline WA admitted in October last year it still had no idea exactly how many FIFO workers were affected by mental illness or how many had committed suicide while away from their families to work in the state’s mines. Even the report issued after the lengthy investigation admitted “the inquiry struck several problem areas in relation to statistics”. “Clear data was difficult to find in the areas of: a definitive total number of workers employed in the Western Australia resources industry on a FIFO #Thousands, #mining, #jobs, #waiting, #WesternAustralia, #Aussies, #don’t, #want, #them #miningindustry, #mentalillness, #mentalhealth, #workersdying, #miningindustryaccounts, #flyinflyoutworkers, #Australiangovernment, #miningsector, #resourcesindustry, #Australiancompanies, #parttimework, #miningcompanies, #miningregion, #mentalhealthissues, #migrationagreement, #skilledmigrantsrequirement, #Companiestalk, #miningjobs, #worklifebalance, #suicidestatistics, #prevalencerate, #suiciderates, #crisispoint, #energysector, #productionsites, #skillsshortage, #problemareas, #WesternAustralia, #Australia, #AustraliaandNewZealand, #Oceania, #Queensland, #UniversityofWesternAustralia, #AustralianBureauofStatistics, #CommunityServices, #MentalHealthCommission, #ChamberofMineralsandEnergy, #PeterMiller, #PaulEveringham, #NatalieWolfe

"Lessons Learned from the International Workshop on Release Engineering," Bram Adams
The release engineering process brings high quality code changes from a developer's workspace to the end user, encompassing (amongst others) the integration of code changes, continuous building/testing of such changes (CI), setup of deployment environments, deployment and release. Recent practices of continuous delivery, which bring changes to the end user in the order of days or hours rather than years, have convinced many companies to invest in their release engineering pipeline and teams. However, what exactly should these companies invest in? Which continuous delivery strategies work, and which ones did not (and why)? Do only large companies benefit? These and other questions were targeted by the past three editions of the International Workshop on Release Engineering (RELENG) and the 1st IEEE Software Special Issue on Release Engineering. This webinar will revisit the major insights and discussion points of RELENG, aiming to provide a starting point for companies to decide on their future release engineering strategy. 432Hz - Angelic Reiki Music | Angel Healing Music - Angel Choir Ambience - Angelic Meditation Music
432Hz allows us to tune into the wisdom of the Universe, Divine Intelligence and our Soul. It creates Unity instead of seperation. It expands our hearts and make us more compassionate and loving. One thing is for sure. A person who resonates with love have inner peace – and this is the starting point for a world were we live in Unity, Peace and Harmony with each-other and Mother Earth. Modern science has begun to recognize what the ancient mystics and wise men have told us for centuries; that everything is in a constant state of vibration. Everything down to the smallest physical particle to the things we cannot not perceive with our (yet) limited senses. The most elemental state of vibration is that of sound. Everything has an optimum range of vibration (frequency), and that rate is called resonance. When we are in resonance, we are in balance. Every organ and every cell in our precious body absorbs and emits sound with particular optimum resonate frequency. 432hz and 528hz tuned music creates resonance in our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual body. Listen for 30 days for maximum effects. ................................ Scalable Machine Learning: The Role of Stratified Data Sharding
In this video from the 2019 Stanford HPC Conference, Srinivasan Parthasarathy from Ohio State University presents: Scalable Machine Learning: The Role of Stratified Data Sharding. "With the increasing popularity of structured data stores, social networks and Web 2.0 and 3.0 applications, complex data formats, such as trees and graphs, are becoming ubiquitous. Managing and learning from such large and complex data stores, on modern computational eco-systems, to realize actionable information efficiently, is daunting. In this talk I will begin with discussing some of these challenges. Subsequently I will discuss a critical element at the heart of this challenge relates to the sharding, placement, storage and access of such tera- and peta- scale data. In this work we develop a novel distributed framework to ease the burden on the programmer and propose an agile and intelligent placement service layer as a flexible yet unified means to address this challenge. Central to our framework is the notion of stratification which seeks to initially group structurally (or semantically) similar entities into strata. Subsequently strata are partitioned within this eco-system according to the needs of the application to maximize locality, balance load, minimize data skew or even take into account energy consumption. Results on several real-world applications validate the efficacy and efficiency of our approach. (Notes: Joint work with Y. Wang (Airbnb) and A. Chakrabarti (MSR))." Srinivasan Parthasarathy, Professor of Computer Science & Engineering, The Ohio State University Srinivasan Parthasarathy is a Professor of Computer Science and Engineering and the director of the data mining research laboratory at Ohio State. His research interests span databases, data mining and high performance computing. He is among a handful of researchers nationwide to have won both the Department of Energy and National Science Foundation Career awards. He and his students have won multiple best paper awards or "best of" nominations from leading forums in the field including: SIAM Data Mining, ACM SIGKDD, VLDB, ISMB, WWW, ICDM, and ACM Bioinformatics. He chairs the SIAM data mining conference steering committee and serves on the action board of ACM TKDD and ACM DMKD --leading journals in the field. Since 2012 he also helped lead the creation of OSU's first-of-a-kind nationwide (USA) undergraduate major in data analytics and serves as one of its founding directors. Pat Dorsey: "The Little Book that Builds Wealth" | Talks at Google
What does it mean for a company to have a moat? What are the key drivers to valuation? Pat Dorsey will use examples to shed light on these, and more questions. About the Book: Capitalism works. That’s why most businesses with high returns on capital attract competition that forces down profitability over time. However, a small minority of companies are able to defy the laws of economic gravity by creating competitive advantages, or “economic moats” that insulate them from competition and allow them to maintain high returns on capital. After spending fifteen years analyzing thousands of companies, Pat has identified a handful of structural characteristics that create competitive advantage. He will discuss these characteristics, how management teams can create and destroy competitive advantage, and how he applies competitive analysis in managing institutional capital at Dorsey Asset Management. About the author: Pat is the founder of Dorsey Asset Management, which manages concentrated global portfolios for institutional investors. Prior to starting Dorsey Asset, Pat was Director of Research for Sanibel Captiva Trust, an independent trust company with approximately $1 billion in assets under management serving high net worth clients. From 2000 to 2011, Pat was Director of Equity Research for Morningstar, where he led the growth of Morningstar’s equity research group from 10 to over 100 analysts. Pat developed Morningstar’s economic moat ratings, as well as the methodology behind Morningstar's framework for analyzing competitive advantage. Pat is also the author of two books — The Five Rules for Successful Stock Investing and The Little Book that Builds Wealth — and has been quoted in publications such as the Wall Street Journal, Fortune, the New York Times, and BusinessWeek. Pat holds a Master’s degree in Political Science from Northwestern University and a bachelor’s degree in government from Wesleyan University. He is a CFA charterholder.

Plan B -- is there an alternative to economic growth?: Miklós Antal at TEDxDanubia 2014
Miklós Antal, ecological economist, is a postdoctoral researcher at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. He now studies macroeconomic aspects of sustainability transitions. Previously he was engaged in energy modeling at the Central European University in Budapest. He got his PhD in economics and MSc in engineering-physics at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. His multidisciplinary research interests are reflected by a number of publications in respected scientific journals, both in natural and social sciences. His commitment to sustainability is not restricted to academic life, he is the scientist who also "walks the talk": his cell phone was hip ten years ago, he avoids flying (which can be a challenging principle to follow at times) and actively encourages his environment to explore the joys of green living. Antal Miklós a Barcelonai Autonóm Egyetem posztdoktori ösztöndíjas kutatója. Jelenleg a környezeti fenntarthatóság makroökonómiai aspektusait vizsgálja. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Brian Keating: "Losing the Nobel Prize" | Talks at Google
Professor Brian Keating (https://briankeating.com/) is an astrophysicist with UC San Diego’s Department of Physics. He and his team develop instrumentation to study the early universe at radio, microwave and infrared wavelengths. He is the author of over 100 scientific publications and holds two U.S.Patents. He received an NSF CAREER award in 2006 and a 2007 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers at the White House from President Bush for a telescope he invented and deployed at the U.S. South Pole Research Station called “BICEP". Professor Keating became a Fellow of the American Physical Society in 2016. He co-leads the Simons Observatory (https://simonsobservatory.org/) Cosmic Microwave Background experiments in the Atacama Desert of Chile. His latest book, Losing the Nobel Prize: A Story of Cosmology, Ambition, and the Perils of Science's Highest Honor (link below), has been selected as one of Amazon.com’s Ten Best Nonfiction Books of the Month and one of Nature Magazine’s Six Best Books of the Season. Brian discusses the difficult problem of exploring the beginnings of the universe, moments after the Big Bang. His quest for the Nobel Prize in Physics was stymied when his experiment which was thought to have discovered definitive proof of the Big Bang ended up just being space dust. To add insult to injury, he was then asked to be part of the nominating committee for the following year’s Nobel Prize award. His journey of self-discovery and introspection opened his eyes to the ways in which the Nobel Prize process itself is broken, and has diverged from what was originally intended by its founder, Alfred Nobel. RI Seminar: Tim Barfoot : Long-Term Visual Route Following for Mobile Robots
Tim Barfoot Associate Professor, University of Toronto October 17, 2014 Long-Term Visual Route Following for Mobile Robots Abstract In this talk I will describe a particular approach to visual route following for mobile robots that we have developed, called Visual Teach & Repeat (VT&R), and what I think the next steps are to make this system usable in real-world applications. We can think of VT&R as a simple form of simultaneous localization and mapping (without the loop closures) along with a path-tracking controller; the idea is to pilot a robot manually along a route once and then be able to repeat the route (in its own tracks) autonomously many, many times using only visual feedback. VT&R is useful for such applications as load delivery (mining), sample return (space exploration), and perimeter patrol (security). Despite having demonstrated this technique for over 500 km of driving on several different robots, there are still many challenges we must meet before we can say this technique is ready for real-world applications. These include (i) visual scene changes such as lighting, (ii) physical scene changes such as path obstructions, and (iii) vehicle changes such as tire wear. I’ll discuss our progress to date in addressing these issues and the next steps moving forward. There will be lots of videos. Speaker Biography Dr. Timothy Barfoot (Associate Professor, University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies -- UTIAS) holds the Canada Research Chair (Tier II) in Autonomous Space Robotics and works in the area of guidance, navigation, and control of mobile robots for space and terrestrial applications. He is interested in developing methods to allow mobile robots to operate over long periods of time in large-scale, unstructured, three-dimensional environments, using rich onboard sensing (e.g., cameras and laser rangefinders) and computation. Dr. Barfoot took up his position at UTIAS in May 2007, after spending four years at MDA Space Missions, where he developed autonomous vehicle navigation technologies for both planetary rovers and terrestrial applications such as underground mining. He is an Ontario Early Researcher Awardholder and a licensed Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario. He sits on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Robotics Research and the Journal of Field Robotics. He is currently serving as the General Chair of Field and Service Robotics (FSR) 2015, which will be held in Toronto.

What is Applied Ethnomusicology & Why Did They Say so Many Terrible Things About it?
Jeff Titon defines applied ethnomusicology as ethnomusicology put to practical use in a community for a social improvement, a cultural good, an economic advantage, a musical benefit or a combination of these. After defining applied ethnomusicology and offering some examples, Titon traces its history and suggests why the founding generation of the Society for Ethnomusicology held applied ethnomusicology in low regard, and why and how a new generation of ethnomusicologists, beginning in the 1980s, practiced applied work and gradually turned opinions around. Speaker Biography: Jeff Titon is co-editor of "The Oxford Handbook of Applied Ethnomusicology." For transcript and more information, visit http://www.loc.gov/today/cyberlc/feature_wdesc.php?rec=8477

Pedro Domingos: "The Master Algorithm" | Talks at Google
Machine learning is the automation of discovery, and it is responsible for making our smartphones work, helping Netflix suggest movies for us to watch, and getting presidents elected. But there is a push to use machine learning to do even more—to cure cancer and AIDS and possibly solve every problem humanity has. Domingos is at the very forefront of the search for the Master Algorithm, a universal learner capable of deriving all knowledge—past, present and future—from data. In this book, he lifts the veil on the usually secretive machine learning industry and details the quest for the Master Algorithm, along with the revolutionary implications such a discovery will have on our society. Pedro Domingos is a Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Washington, and he is the cofounder of the International Machine Learning Society. https://books.google.com/books/about/The_Master_Algorithm.html?id=glUtrgEACAAJ This Authors at Google talk was hosted by Boris Debic. eBook https://play.google.com/store/books/details/Pedro_Domingos_The_Master_Algorithm?id=CPgqCgAAQBAJ
