2018 Global Summit: "A Vision for a Just & Sustainable Food System" + "Inspiration for Food Justice"
"A Vision for a Just & Sustainable Food System" We all want a healthy food system where our children’s bellies are full, where we can access and afford fresh, nutrient-rich foods, and where people who work along the food chain from the field to the kitchen can live sustainable and healthy lives. We all want a food system that is fair, sustainable, and equitable. It requires a belief that the current system isn’t working and a clear vision of how things could be better. In this session, panelists will offer a vision for a new sustainable food system that replaces the current oppressive system that we currently have. Dr. Michael W. Hamm, C. S. Mott Professor of Sustainable Agriculture, MSU Department of Community Sustainability Ms. Michelle Nunn (KNFP-15), President and CEO, CARE USA Ms. Aimee Witteman (FSPF-05), Program Director, Midwest Climate & Energy Care, McKnight Foundation (video recording) Moderator: Ms. Angela Tagtow (FSPF-06) -- "Inspiration for Food Justice" It is easy to be overwhelmed by all the bad news in the world. The reality is that we live in a society built on oppressive systems that constantly work to concentrate power in the hands of a few and at the expense of everyone else. A day seemingly cannot go by without an apparent setback in building a just and equitable society. How can you continue the work when you feel like curling up in tight ball in a corner? This talk will highlight stories of hope and success and reinvigorate you in your commitment to food security and other forms of social justice. Ms. Karen Washington, Rise and Root Farm, Farmer/Activist Mr. Jose Oliva, Co-Director, Food Chain Workers Alliance Mr. J.D. McCrary, Executive Director, International Rescue Committee Moderator: Ms. Danielle Nierenberg, President, Food Tank

Interesting Places Along Carmel Monon Trail
The city of Carmel, Indiana lies a short distance north of Indianapolis, but the Monon Trail continues on through it for some five miles, roughly paralleling U. S. 31 (Meridian Street) from 96th to 146th Street in Carmel. Along the trail are any number of activities and parks. Carmel also hosts events such as free summer concerts, Carmelfest over the July 4th holidays, and in September there’s the Carmel International Arts Festival. Parks close to the Monon Greenway and with direct access to the trail include Lenape Trace on the south side of Carmel. This is a 5-acre green space and shelter house. Further north, on both sides of the Monon are Central Park and the Monon Center. These areas combine for a 161-acre complex of indoor and outdoor activities. There is a water park and pool, fitness facility, skate park, as well as wetlands, woodlands, fishing pier and some four miles of trails in the park. Moving north again on the map, Civic Square is on the west side of the trail, and hosts a weekly Saturday farmers market in season. There is an arts and design district in Carmel as well, with Children’s and Repertoire theaters, symphony, children’s art gallery, and a miniatures museum. The Old Monon Depot is home to Carmel’s historical society. In addition, this area offers Ferrin’s Fruit Winery and tasting bar, and a little further afield is Conner Prairie Living History Park to the east.

Webinar: Credit Freezes, Credit Scores and Identify Theft 8330094— consumerfinance.gov
Identity theft occurs when someone steals a consumer’s identity to commit fraud, by using personal information without permission. Identity theft and fraud affect many Americans. According to the Justice Department, over 36 million people, or nearly 15% of all U.S. residents age 16 or older have experienced at least one incident of identity theft during their lifetime. To protect against identity theft and fraud, a consumer can seek a security freeze (also known as “credit freeze”), and regularly check credit reports and scores to look for possible fraudulent actions. The Bureau and other federal agencies have tools and resources to help consumers keep an eye on their credit profile and avoid identity theft.

The Future of Race: Where Do We Go and Who Leads the Way? | Talks at Google
For a new generation of thought leaders, activists, artists and technologists, the idea of “stopping business as usual” is the rallying cry to point out the ways in which race and racism are still prevalent in our society. Equipped with new forms of communication powered by massive advancements in technology, these leaders are creating new pathways to discuss identity and racial equity, while forcing a global conversation about the status quo. Major public moments like Colin Kaepernick sitting for the national anthem or Jesse Williams delivering an impassioned speech at the BET Awards, have spotlighted the urgent need for a global reconciliation on race. In this conversation, we will discuss how dismantling structural systems held up by historical racism, will require an entire new perpective on race, rooted in a belief that the future of identity will be much more complex than it is today. Panelists Eddie Huang, Paola Mendoza, Vint Cerf, and Luvvie Ajayi. Moderated by Roland Martin.

STOCKED Panel Discussion: March 2013
PANEL DISCUSSION: Eat Here! Food Deserts in the 21st Century How is the food on our table defined by the neighborhoods in which we live? Recent research indicates 23.5 million Americans live in a food desert-- impeded financially or physically from obtaining food. Many are overwhelmed by the 5-to-1 ratio of fast-food to grocery stores. With factors such as cost and convenience as primary motivators in Americans' diets, what will the grocery store of the future look like? How are mobile food markets or virtual grocery stores changing the grocery store landscape? With an exhibition overview by Stocked curator and Eat Here! moderator Emily Stamey, regional stakeholders discuss the status quo while providing insightful plans for the future of the grocery store and what Americans eat. "Eat Here!" is moderated by Stocked: Contemporary Art from the Grocery Aisles curator Dr. Emily Stamey. Stamey is associate curator of art at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art and holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in art history from the University of Kansas. Dr. Deborah Ballard-Reisch is the WSU Kansas Health Foundation Distinguished Chair in Strategic Communication and Elliot School of Communication professor and founder of the WSU Hunger Awareness Initiative. Eugene Brown III is the mobile market manager for Beans & Greens, a non-profit organization in Kansas City, and a member of the Front Porch Alliance to co-lead a farm business development project with area high school students. Dr. David E. Procter is director of the Center for Engagement and Community Development at Kansas State University and briefed the U.S. Senate Hunger Caucus on the loss of grocery stores in rural communities and its devastating impact on communities. Daylight saving time , also daylight savings time , also summer time , is the practice of advancing clocks during summer months so that evening daylight lasts longer, while sacrificing normal sunrise times. Typically, regions that use daylight saving time adjust clocks forward one hour close to the start of spring and adjust them backward in the autumn to standard time.
