Computational Aspects in the Braid Group and Applications to Cryptography - Mina Teicher

01:15:38
Mina Teicher Bar-Ilan University; Member, School of Mathematics March 12, 2012 The braid group on n strands may be viewed as an infinite analog of the symmetric group on n elements with additional topological phenomena. It appears in several areas of mathematics, physics and computer sciences, including knot theory, algebraic geometry, quantum mechanics, quantum computing and cryptography. I will start with a presentation of the braid group and its three main structural and relationship problems – the Word problem, Conjugacy problem, and the Hurwitz Equivalence problem. I will talk about algorithms for these problems and will detail one probabilistic algorithm. I shall talk about the celebrated un-decidability result of the Hurwitz Equivalence, on an attack on a braid group based PKC and will mention the application to classification of surfaces For more videos, visit http://video.ias.edu

Connections Between Braid Groups, Homotopy Theory, and Low Dimensional Topology - Fred Cohen

56:48
Connections Between Braid Groups, Homotopy Theory, and Low Dimensional Topology. Topology of Arrangements and Applications October 06, 2004 09:30 AM to 10:30 AM Speakers: Frederick Cohen Summary: An elementary homomorphism from a free group to the pure braid group yields interesting connections between braid groups, homotopy theory, and low dimensional topology. This map induces a map on the Lie algebra obtained from the descending central series. Further, this map induces a morphism of simplicial groups. All of these maps are shown to be injective. Brunnian braids are discussed. The analogous maps of Lie algebras induced on the filtration quotients of the mod-p descending central series is again an injection. Using these facts it turns out that the homotopy groups of this simplicial group, those of the 2-sphere, are isomorphic to natural subquotients of the pure braid group. In addition, the mod-p analogues give a connection between the classical unstable Adams spectral sequence, and the mod-p analogues of Vassiliev invariants of pure braids. http://www.msri.org/web/msri/scientific/show/-/event/Wm315 For Lecture Notes : http://jessica2.msri.org/attachments/10700/10700.pdf

Visual Group Theory, Lecture 1.3: Groups in science, art, and mathematics Groups are always lurking where symmetry arises. In this lecture, we explore many beautiful examples of groups that arise from natural symmetries in science, art, and mathematics. This includes shapes of molecules, repeating patterns in 1, 2, and 3 dimensions, and finally, how groups arise in braids. Derived Grothendieck-Teichmüller group and graph complexes, after T. Willwacher Graph complex is spanned by equivalence classes of finite connected graphs with the dual differential given by the sum of all contractions of edges, with appropriate signs. This complex forms a differential graded Lie algebra, and acts as a universal derived infinitesimal symmetry of all graded Lie algebras of polyvector fields on finite-dimensional manifolds. Grothendieck-Teichmüller group, as defined by V. Drinfeld, is the group of symmetries of the tower of rationally completed braid groups. Recent breakthrough by T. Willwacher identifies the graph complex with the derived version of GT group. This result settles essentially all open questions in the subject of deformation quantization and little disc operads.

Shahn Majid: "Braided Algebra"

54:31
Speaker: Shahn Majid (Queen Mary University of London) Title: Braided Algebra Event: Flowin'Cat 2010 (October 2010, University of Oxford) Abstract: In the 1990s I developed over about 60 papers a new kind of algebra done entirely with braid and tangle diagrams in which information flows down strands much as in a flow chart or wiring diagram but where there is a nontrivial braiding where strands cross. This includes quantum groups or Hopf algebras in braided categories (braided groups) and gauge theory. I review the theory and update it with a notion of complex conjugation in such a setting (a bar category).

Louis Kauffman: Revolutions in Knots, Braids and Physics

01:17:37
Knotting and linking occurs in the tangling of ropes in physical space and the earliest human technologies utilized weaving and knotting in the making structures for containment, clothing and binding. Only since the time of Faraday, Maxwell and Kelvin, however, have knots begun to figure in physical and mathematical science. Faraday saw that electric and magnetic fields are literally linked with one another and further developments featured in the work of Gauss and Maxwell. From there Gauss then Riemann then Poincare developed the subject of topology and by 1900 it was possible to study knots using topology. A significant reconnection with physics occurred in the 1980’s work of Vaughan Jones connecting knot theory and statistical mechanics and with the work of Edward Witten connecting knot invariants with quantum field theory. Since that time there has been an extraordinary interplay of work relating knots and physics and natural science. Some of this work goes back to fundamental questions about knots as physical entities with length and thickness, elasticity and bendability. Some of it goes more deeply into the relationships with statistical mechanics, combinatorics, quantum field theory and new forays into algebraic topology undreamed of in the age of Faraday and Maxwell. Possible applications loom in quantum computing, molecular biology and elsewhere in pure mathematics and the sciences. This talk will be a pictorial introduction to these revolutions. Louis Kauffman developed interests in Boolean algebra, circuits, diagrammatic methods and mathematics and experiments related to non-linear pendulum oscillations as a kid. He received the degree of B.S. in Mathematics from MIT and a PhD. in Mathematics by Princeton University. He has been at the University of Illinois at Chicago since January 1971 and became Professor of Mathematics Emeritus in May 2017. He is the author of four books on knot theory and is the editor of the World-Scientific 'Book Series On Knots and Everything'. He is the Editor in Chief and founding editor of the Journal of Knot Theory and Its Ramifications. He is the co-editor of the review volume Quantum Topology and editor of the review volume Knots and Applications. Kauffman is the recipient of a 1993 University Scholar Award by the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is the 1993 recipient of the 1993 Warren McCulloch Memorial Award of the American Society for Cybernetics for significant contributions to the field of Cybernetics, the 1996 award of the Alternative Natural Philosophy Association for his contribution to the understanding of discrete physics, the 2014 Norbert Wiener Medal from the American Society for Cybernetics. He is Past President of the American Society for Cybernetics (2005-2008) and a former Polya Lecturer for Mathematical Association of America (2008-2010). He was elected a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society in 2014. Chalk Talk for the KITP Friends, Nov 28, 2019

Password Security using Group Theory Part 1 of 5

Benjamin Fine (Fairfield University). Title: Password Security Using Combinatorial Group Theory Abstract. Joint with: Gilbert Baumslag and Doug Troeger. Over the past decade and a half there has been a concerted effort to apply combinatorial group theoretic methods to cryptographic protocols. In this talk we briefly explain how group theoretic techniques are applied to cryptology and then consider a method to apply group theoretic techniques to password security. Challenge response methods are increasingly used to enhance password security. In particular we present a very secure method for challenge response password verification using combinatorial group theory. This method, which relies on the group randomizer system, a subset of the MAGNUS computer algebra system, handles most of the present problems with challenge response systems. Theoretical security is based on several results in asymptotic group theory and these will be explained as well. Moreover, with a similar notion of genericity, we prove that for generic pairs of elements of the braid group, the conjugacy search problem can be solved in quadratic time. The idea behind both results is that generic braids can be conjugated ''easily'' into a rigid braid. Quantum Algorithms for Number Theory and their Relevance to Cryptography

01:07:57
I will report on recent results about quantum algorithms for solving computational problems in number theory. I will show how they impact the security of certain post-quantum cryptosystems. Shor's quantum algorithm for factoring large integers and solving the discrete logarithm problem has been the motivation for an entire new area of research in cryptology: namely "post-quantum" cryptography. It consists of designing new cryptographic primitives which will resist attacks from quantum computers. In a recent work in collaboration with Fang Song, I presented a quantum polynomial time algorithm for solving the so-called "Principal Ideal Problem" (among other things) in arbitrary fields. We will see how this impacts the security of some ring-based proposals for quantum resistant cryptography. In collaboration with David Jao and Anirudh Sankar, I also described a quantum algorithm which finds an isogeny between two given supersingular curves over a finite field, a hard problem on which some post-quantum cryptosystem rely. Finally, if there is enough time, I'll mention some recent work on factorization. Symmetry-Based Learning

01:36:36
Learning representations is arguably the central problem in machine learning, and symmetry group theory is a natural foundation for it. A symmetry of a classifier is a representation change that doesn't change the examples' classes. The goal of representation learning is to get rid of unimportant variations, making important ones easy to detect, and unimportant variations are symmetries of the target function. Exploiting symmetries reduces sample complexity, leads to new generalizations of classic learning algorithms, provides a new approach to deep learning, and is applicable with all types of machine learning. In this talk I will present three approaches to symmetry-based learning: (1) Exchangeable variable models are distributions that are invariant under permutations of subsets of the variables. They subsume existing tractable independence-based models and difficult cases like parity functions, and outperform SVMs and state-of-the-art probabilistic classifiers. (2) Deep symmetry networks generalize convolutional neural networks by tying parameters and pooling over an arbitrary symmetry group, not just the translation group. In preliminary experiments, they outperformed convnets on a digit recognition task. (3) Symmetry-based semantic parsing defines a symmetry of a sentence as a syntactic transformation that preserves its meaning. The meaning of a sentence is thus its orbit under the semantic symmetry group of the language. This allows us to map sentences to their meanings without pre-defining a formal meaning representation or requiring labeled data in the form of sentence-formal meaning pairs, and achieved promising results in a paraphrase detection problem. (Joint work with Rob Gens, Chloe Kiddon and Mathias Niepert.)

Circular Encryption in Formal and Computational Cryptography - Bruce Kapron

01:49:41
Bruce Kapron University of Victoria; Member, School of Mathematics March 25, 2014 The goal of computationally sound symbolic security is to create formal systems of cryptography which have a sound interpretation with respect to complexity-based notions of security. While there has been much progress in the development of such systems, one big impediment is the treatment of circular encryptions. In many typical symbolic systems, it is secure to encrypt a key by itself, but in the computational setting, standard notions of security break down in this case. There are now approaches to this problem from both sides. On the symbolic side, Miccianico (2010) presented a system in which adversarial knowledge is modeled co-inductively, and circular encryption is no longer symbolically secure. On the computational side, systems in which circular encryptions are secure have been developed based on standard hardness assumptions. I will survey the work described above, as well as presenting some recent results on extending Micciancio's system beyond the setting of passive eavesdropping adversaries (joint work with Mohammad Hajiabadi.) Computational Entropy - Salil Vadhan

57:49
Salil Vadhan Harvard University; Visiting Researcher Microsoft Research SVC; Visiting Scholar Stanford University April 23, 2012 Shannon's notion of entropy measures the amount of "randomness" in a process. However, to an algorithm with bounded resources, the amount of randomness can appear to be very different from the Shannon entropy. Indeed, various measures of "computational entropy" have been very useful in computational complexity and the foundations of cryptography. In this talk, I will describe two new measures of computational entropy ("next-bit pseudoentropy" and "inaccessible entropy") that have enabled much simpler and more efficient constructions of cryptographic primitives from one-way functions. In particular, I will discuss a construction of pseudorandom generators of seed length O(n^3) from a one-way function on n bits, improving the seed length of O(n^8) in the classic construction of Hastad, Impagliazzo, Levin, and Luby. ASM View of Abstract Cryptography

55:05
The computational model of cryptography views agents as PPT algorithms operating on strings. In the abstract model, agents are working on syntactic representations of messages, using a fixed set of rules for composing and analyzing such representations. By the Abstract State Machine thesis of Gurevich, an agent in the abstract model is an algorithm, simulatable by an appropriate ASM. But what are the appropriate algorithms for such agents? What are their states? What kind of algorithms are they: simple (isolated, sequential, small-step), interactive (between and within a step), parallel (wide-step, with interacting components), distributed? It turns out that a surprisingly simple model is faithful with respect to the computational model. The basic PPT computational notions, of indistinguishability and unforgeability, are given sharp abstract counterparts, allowing porting of typical proofs between the two abstraction levels, both ways. As a proof of the practical value of the model, a tool demo of a general-purpose software-testing tool developed in MSR, SpecExplorer, finding attacks on abstract cryptographic protocols will be presented.

Claire Amiot: Cluster algebras and categorification - Part 1

01:03:17
Abstract: In this course I will first introduce cluster algebras associated with a triangulated surface. I will then focus on representation of quivers, and show the strong link between cluster combinatorics and representation theory. The aim will be to explain additive categorification of cluster algebras in this context. All the notions will be illustrated by examples.
