Doris Kearns Goodwin: 2018 National Book Festival

01:05:05
Doris Kearns Goodwin launches her new book "Leadership: In Turbulent Times" with David M. Rubenstein at the 2018 Library of Congress National Book Festival in Washington, D.C. Speaker Biography: Doris Kearns Goodwin's interest in leadership began more than half a century ago as a teacher at Harvard. Her experiences working for LBJ in the White House and later assisting him on his memoirs led to "Lyndon Johnson and the American Dream." She followed up with the Pulitzer Prize–winning "No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor: The Home Front in World War II." Goodwin earned the Lincoln Prize for the runaway best-seller "Team of Rivals," the basis for Steven Spielberg's Academy Award–winning film "Lincoln," and the Carnegie Medal for "The Bully Pulpit," the New York Times best-selling chronicle of the friendship between Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft. Goodwin's new book is "Leadership: In Turbulent Times" (Simon & Schuster), in which she examines the four presidents she has studied most closely: Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Lyndon B. Johnson to show how they first recognized leadership qualities within themselves and were recognized by others as leaders. She lives in Concord, Massachusetts. The Treaty of Versailles a Hundred Years Later

43:39
The Treaty of Versailles was signed in June 1919. Did the treaty lead to the outbreak of World War II? Was the attempt to creat a new world order a failure? A lecture by Margaret MacMillan, University of Toronto 04 June 2019 6pm (UK time) https://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/treaty-of-versailles-100-years A century has passed since the Treaty of Versailles was signed on 28 June 1919. After WWI the treaty imposed peace terms which have remained the subject of controversy ever since. It also attempted to set up a new international order to ensure that there would never again be such a destructive war as that of 1914-18. Professor MacMillan, a specialist in British imperial history and the international history of the 19th and 20th centuries, will consider if the treaty led to the outbreak of the Second World War and whether the attempt to create a new world order was a failure.

The Third Industrial Revolution: A Radical New Sharing Economy

01:44:59
The global economy is in crisis. The exponential exhaustion of natural resources, declining productivity, slow growth, rising unemployment, and steep inequality, forces us to rethink our economic models. Where do we go from here? In this feature-length documentary, social and economic theorist Jeremy Rifkin lays out a road map to usher in a new economic system. A Third Industrial Revolution is unfolding with the convergence of three pivotal technologies: an ultra-fast 5G communication internet, a renewable energy internet, and a driverless mobility internet, all connected to the Internet of Things embedded across society and the environment. This 21st century smart digital infrastructure is giving rise to a radical new sharing economy that is transforming the way we manage, power and move economic life. But with climate change now ravaging the planet, it needs to happen fast. Change of this magnitude requires political will and a profound ideological shift. Supermarkets have a stranglehold and are squeezing the life out of banana workers and farmers. Join us to Make Fruit Fair – NOW! https://www.makefruitfair.org/ A handful of supermarket chains dominate the European retail market. They are the gatekeepers between European consumers and suppliers from around the world. They abuse their buyer power and dictate prices by squeezing suppliers to keep costs extremely low. Farmers have no guarantees about their payment. Workers are often forced to work long hours, for low pay in degrading conditions, exposed to harmful agrochemicals. These conditions can be changed! Active Matter Summit: Session 6

02:22:00
In recent decades, developments in software and hardware technologies have created dramatic shifts in design, manufacturing and research. Software technologies have facilitated automated process and new solutions for complex problems. Computation has also become a platform for creativity through generative art and design. New hardware platforms and digital fabrication technologies have similarly transformed manufacturing, offering more efficient production and mass customization. Such advances have helped catalyzed the maker-movement, democratizing design and maker culture. This influx of new capabilities to design, compute and fabricate like never before, has sparked a renewed interest in material performance. We are now witnessing significant advances in active matter, 3D/4D Printing, materials science, synthetic biology, DNA nanotechnology and soft robotics, which have led to the convergence of software, hardware and material technologies and the growing field of programmable materials. This conference was about the emerging field of active matter and programmable materials that bridges the worlds of art, science, engineering and design, demonstrating new perspectives for computation, transformation and dynamic material applications. If over the past few decades we have experienced a software revolution, and more recently, a hardware revolution, this conference aims to discuss the premises, challenges and innovations brought by today’s materials revolution. We can now sense, compute, and actuate with materials alone, just as we could with software and hardware platforms previously. How does this shift influence materials research, and how does it shape the future of design, arts, and industrial applications? What tools and design processes do we need to advance, augment and invent new materials today? What are the key roles that industry, government, academic and public institutions can play in catalyzing the field of programmable materials? This two-day conference consisted of a range of talks and lively discussion from leading researchers in materials science, art & design, synthetic biology and soft-robotics along with leaders from government, public institutions and industry.

In 1990, Ted Turner offered a $500,000 prize for the best unpublished novel offering positive solutions to global problems. Quinn submitted Ishmael, which was selected as the grand prize winner, by a panel of distinguished authors, out of 2500 entries. http://ishmael.org Wissner is a teacher, writer and speaker specializing in peak oil, climate change, money and debt, and cultural transition. He is founder and president of Local Future. http://aaronwissner.com Local Future is a non-profit organization which educates the public on topics including: sustainability, localism, community resilience, renewable energy, modern economics, environmentalism and permaculture. http://localfuture.org Extended Biography of Daniel Quinn Daniel Quinn (1935- ) grew up in Omaha, Nebraska, where he graduated from Creighton Prep in 1953. He studied at St. Louis University, the University of Vienna, and Loyola University of Chicago, receiving a bachelor's degree in English, cum laude, in 1957. During a twenty-year career in educational and consumer publishing in Chicago, he served as Biography and Fine Arts editor at the American Peoples Encyclopedia, managing editor of the Greater Cleveland Mathematics Program (Science Research Associates), head of the mathematics department at Encyclopedia Britannica Educational Corporation, Executive Editor of Fuller & Dees Publishing (a division of the Times Mirror Corporation) and Editorial Director of the Society for Visual Education (a division of the Singer Corporation). Mr. Quinn is best known as the author of Ishmael, the novel that in 1991 won the Turner Tomorrow Fellowship, established to encourage authors to seek "creative and positive solutions to global problems." Ishmael has been in print continuously since its publication in 1992 and has been made available in more than 25 languages. Throughout the U.S. and Canada and in other countries as well, Ishmael is used as a text in a broad range of classes that include anthropology, ecology, history, literature, philosophy, ethics, biology, and psychology, at age levels from middle school through graduate level. He followed Ishmael with an autobiography, Providence (1994), The Story Of B (1996), a novel that continues the philosophical and religious exploration begun in Ishmael; and My Ishmael: A Sequel (1997), in which it's learned that, unbeknownst to the narrator of Ishmael, Ishmael was working with another pupil, a twelve-year-old girl. Other works include Beyond Civilization (1999), a nonfiction work that explores, among other relevant topics, tribal ways of making a living that work here and now; After Dachau (2001), a novel that critics have compared to Fahrenheit 451, Brave New World, and 1984; The Man Who Grew Young, a graphic novel that tells the unique and fascinating story of a man who lives backward through time and history; The Holy (2002), a metaphysical thriller that has been compared to John Fowles' The Magus (and which won the 2003 Independent Publisher Award for Mystery/Suspense/Thriller of the Year); Tales of Adam (2005), written as part of an early version of the book that ultimately became Ishmael, illustrated by Michael McCurdy; Work, Work, Work, (2006), a children's book with Quinn's own illustrations; and If They Give You Lined Paper, Write Sideways, in which the author investigates the source of his own ideas (which so many readers have found mysteriously alien). His short fiction has appeared in The Quarterly, Asylum, Magic Realism, and elsewhere.

Malawi politician calls for LGBT people to be killed - UN Human Rights responds

00:41
The failure to prosecute a case in which one of Malawi's main political parties has described gay and lesbian people as “worse than dogs” and called for them to be killed "sends a dangerous message that inciting others to kill gay people is legitimate and will be tolerated by the authorities – in effect encouraging violent threats and attacks on the gay and lesbian community in Malawi", United Nations Human Rightsspokesperson Rupert Colville said at the UN Geneva press briefing on Friday. The statements were made, earlier this month, by People’s Party spokesperson Kenneth Msonda on his personal Facebook page and repeated in media interviews. Mr. Colville said People’s Party spokesperson Kenneth Msonda was due to appear before the Blantyre Magistrate Court today (22 January) after a criminal case was initiated by two civil society organizations, but regrettably, yesterday (21 January) the Director of Public Prosecutions decided to discontinue the case, underlining that the State will not prosecute Mr Msonda.
