African mining: Opportunities and challenges

55:03
Africa's mineral industry is the largest mineral industries in the world. Mineral-rich countries in Africa enjoyed a mining boom between 2002 and 2007 as metal and oil prices nearly tripled. Companies competed furiously for new mines to meet growing world demand. But since then, amidst a global economic downturn, it hasn't been an easy time for the mining sector with commodity price volatility. On this CNBC Africa Special we talk to a panel of experts on what it takes to mine in Africa.

Save Songhai farm Lagos, an abandoned goldmine

10:58
Save Songhai Farm Lagos, an Abandoned Goldmine Songhai Farm Lagos is an Initiative of the Lagos state Government and Songhai farm Portnovo, Benin Republic. This facility was started in 2012 by the Lagos state government under the former Governor Babatunde Raji Fasola. The farm is popularly known as Fasola farm, located at Avia – Igborosun Badagry. The aim was to train farmers on integrated farming and sustainable Agriculture. I attended a five days advanced training programme on Organic Agriculture and Green Economy, organized by LASU in conjunction with FUNAAB at Songhai. The experience was awesome but to my dismay Songhai has been abandoned since the end of Gov. Fasola’s tenure in office. The facility was formerly sitting on 379 hectares of land but presently remaining just 25 acres of land since the invasion of the villagers. The farm started with 50 worker but presently just two workers are left to work at their faith. The workers have fled due to nonpayment of salaries. Songhai is located in different parts of the country; Lagos, Kastina, Cross river, Anambra, Enugu, Osun and Owerri with focus on crops like cassava, plantain, orange, mango, chili peppe, moringa, coconut and live stock like quail, brooding, layers, piggery, snailry and fishery. There are activities going on in these farms except for Lagos state. Facilities like this at this time should be taken care of. People are hungry and there are a lot of unemployed youths out there that are willing to work on these farms to produce food if employed. It’s quite unfortunate that a place like this Goldmine has been abandoned. Please we call on the relevant authorities to do something about this place and make it fully functional again.

Robust harvest expected as tomato disease subsides in Nigeria

02:43
About two months ago, a tomato disease hit farms across Nigeria, leading to a severe scarcity of the fruit. Consequently, prices have soared -- by over 400 percent in some cases -- leaving many a Nigerian household unable to afford them. But as Deji Badmus reports, the swing from scarcity to excess supply has taken barely 2 months, as a surge has cut prices sharply.

4TH NIGERIAN DIASPORA DIRECT INVESTMENT SUMMIT, LONDON

01:13
Press release Lagos State's Governor Ambode to attend NDDIS 2017 LAGOS State governor Akinwunmi Ambode and Nigeria's solid minerals minister Kayode Fayemi have joined the list of government officials who will attend the fourth Nigerian Direct Diaspora Investment Summit (NDDIS) in London on 13th - 14th July 2017. Put together to help Nigerians in the diaspora connect with the country and enable them set up their businesses in Nigeria, NDDIS is aimed at mobilising a very resourceful but silent business class. It is also an opportunity to identify potential sources of finance, technology and technical skills that could boost the promotion and stimulation of enterprise and the creation of jobs in Nigeria. Being organised for the fourth time, NDDIS 2017 is focusing on developing the government's plans to diversify the Nigerian economy and end the dependency on oil. As part of this drive, the likes of Governor Ambode, Senator Lanre Tejuosho and Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the special assistant to President Buhari on diaspora affairs have all agreed to address the two-day summit. NDDIS chairman Chief Bimbo Afolayan, said: "We are delighted to have had several prominent government functionaries agree to attend. However, we are not relenting in our efforts to attract more and we are expecting at least five state governors, the heads of several parastatals and representatives of the private sector. "Even the vice president Professor Yemi Osinbajo has said he may attend subject to the dictates of his schedule. Should he not be able to attend, he has said he will send a representative, so things are really looking up at the moment." It is believed that solid minerals minister and former Ekiti State governor Kayode Fayemi is also considering attending the event to woo investors into the solid minerals sector. About four other governors are also considering making the trip to attend the event and exploit the investment opportunities NDDIS offers. David Smith, the chairman on the British African Business Alliance, added: "NDDIS is about attracting foreign direct investment into Nigeria from both multinationals and the diaspora. Some of this investment will be huge that go towards major infrastructural projects and some will go towards the development of cottage industries." "So far, things are pointing towards a very successful event as the presence of the Lagos State governor indicates that there will be opportunities in infrastructure like transport, housing, healthcare and education, while the solid minerals minister is clearly looking at significant economic diversification. I hope some of the other governors who attend come up with opportunities in other sectors like agriculture, food processing and manufacturing." Taking place at School of Oriental Studies in central London on June 29 and 30, NDDIS has identified 250 existing diasporan businesses that will like to set up their models in Nigeria to provide employment. Among those supporting the summit are UK Trade & Investment, the Business Council for Africa, the British African Business Alliance and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Kenya Gold Mines: Poor infrastructure, lack of safety equipment puts lives at risk

02:45
Just how many people lose their lives in Kenya's gold mines is not known. In informal shafts in the west of the country, poor infrastructure and a lack of safety equipment make an already dangerous job, much more risky. Many artisanal miners overlook obvious hazards in their determination to earn a living. CGTN's Oliver Jarvis witnessed the fatal consequences of unregulated mining first-hand, and filed this report. Interview: Kenya mining sector review

03:31
Kenya is working to position herself as a more efficient destination for mining investment. A new Mining Act came into force in 2016, replacing mining legislation from 1940. However, it left controversial royalty rates enacted in 2013, firmly in place. One of the law's key features, is a split of revenues from mining royalties, among various governments, and communities in which the mines are located. CGTN's Ramah Nyang earlier spoke to Kenya's Cabinet Secretary in charge of Mining Dan Kazungu, for an update on the law's implementation. Nigeria's mining sector to receive $600m investment fund — Osinbajo

04:02
Nigeria’s Acting President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, on Tuesday disclosed that the country’s mining sector will receive $600 million investment fund through the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority, the Nigerian Stock Exchange and others. Osinbajo disclosed this while declaring open the ongoing three-day National Mining Summit, with the theme, ‘Unearthing Nigeria’s Mining Sector’, in Abuja. “We are currently working with the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority, the Nigerian Stock Exchange, and others to assemble a $600m investment fund for the sector. Internationally we have secured $150m in funding from the World Bank for the Mineral Sector Support for Economic Diversification (MSSED).” He expressed optimism that with the recently launched Economic Recovery and Growth Plan, the country will achieve its target of seven per cent economic growth rate by 2020, with more aggressive growth rate of 8.54 percent for the mining sector. The Acting President said the mining sector will contribute $27 billion to the country’s GDP in 2025. He said: “I am pleased to be here today joining you at this national mining summit. Importantly it underscores the earth moving task before us and the enormous opportunities. Yes we need to unearth this incredible source of growth and development for us before our continent. “For us in Nigeria, this summit is also a key step towards implementing our economic recovery and growth plan launched in April by President Buhari. The mining sector is a priority for the Nigerian government and a crucial part of our economic growth and diversification agenda. “We have also secured funding from both domestic and international sources for investment in the solid mineral industry. From the public purse, the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development has been granted access to the mining sector component of our natural resources development fund for a sum of N30bn , approximately a $100m, an intervention fund from the federal government. ‘’This is partly to help provide cheap loans and grants to industry participants as well as for direct investing in foundational infrastructure.” Apart from financial investments, he said government was also addressing the challenge of the lack of geological data. “The Nigerian geological and survey agency is undertaking the additional ground investigation nationwide to upgrade our national minerals’ database so that we can more easily attract financial investment, as well as assure operators of the scope of operations required for further exploration and mining. “We’ve also signed memoranda of understanding and technical cooperation agreements with the China Geological service, Shandong Mineral Exploitation Agency; and the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines of Morocco,” he said.

The Chairman of Stainless Steel Importers, Seller & Installers Association of Nigeria, Gerry Ehieze, said the Steel industry have been able to raise N3 billion and 7,000 people in the last two years. He said this at the first stakeholders meeting of Stainless Steel Importers, Seller & Installers Association with Minister of Trade and Investment in Abuja on Thursday. Ehieze said the industry has achieved even though they’ve not explored just 7% out of the infinite benefits that the steel could offer. Ehieze also said the Federal Government plan to diversify the economy is not eminent even in agriculture. He said during this time of economic meltdown it is important to consider the Steel Sector as a major player in turning the economy around. He also said steel is used everywhere by people from birth till death and we are surrounded by steel. Ehieze also said toothpicks, washing machines, architectural masterpiece in the world, implants used for medical purposes and jewelries worn by women are made from Steel. He also said that if Nigeria start producing steel the country would become the hub for West African and North African Countries and it would help reshape the economy. The Deputy Assistant Director of Steel, Ime Ekrikpo said the steel industry is still at its infantile state and the industry is privatized. He said the Ministry of Solid Minerals is restricted to enabling an environment for the private sector to effectively steer the wheel and develop the sector. He also said the discovery of nickel in Kaduna shows Nigeria needs to look for things that will move the Country from where we have been and where we should be. He also mentioned that the mining sector which delivers the raw materials for steel making is being restructured and efforts are being made by the Federal Government to diversify the economy.
