Argenta, BC: A Story By Daniel Wood – Pt.1

01:00
Argenta is a small community located in the Kootnays, BC. Originally established around a silver mine, it became a Quaker settlement. Currently, Argenta only has a few Quaker families left, and is mostly populated by back-to-the-landers. Journalist Daniel Wood and I visited Argenta in August 2018 as part of his research around "intentional communities" (popularly called 'utopias')

We thought we would be tough and go straight up Little Superior and hike the ridge to the summit of Mt Superior, however after booting up 2/3 of it we were behind on time and exhausted... hence the run off Little Superior and not the summit. But it was a blast and I can't wait to get out and do it again... this time touring up the right route :)

The Greenhorn Song [Pollard]

03:03
By Dick Pollard of Argenta, BC who logged in 'that Duncan country', the area north of Kootenay Lake, before the Duncan Dam was built. High lead logging is a method of getting felled trees out of the tangle of a cut block. A 'spar tree' (a tall, strong tree from which all limbs are chopped) is rigged with blocks and cables. The cables are connected to an engine, steam- or diesel-driven. From the cables hang sixteen-foot choker cables, which the chokerman hooks around the logs. The whistle punk signals the donkey-puncher, who throws the engine into gear. The cable lifts the choked logs off the ground and hauls them in to the 'cold deck' at the base of the spar tree. The donkey engine sounds here are again drawn from Bob Swanson's archives. This CD features the collecting work of Phil Thomas, a folklorist deeply attached to the historical and cultural roots of his native province. What Thomas showed in his collection was that the history of folk song in this most westernmost province was a history of struggle: the struggle to harvest and mine the natural resources (fish, timber, coal and metals), the struggle between the early capitalists and their work forces, and the struggle with the landform itself, allowing such easy access from the south and resisting it from the east. The songs in his collection are in the main from logging camps, from fishermen and from the constantly roaming hard rock miners, men who until just yesterday formed the overwhelming majority of the male working population. To these categories might be added songs of transportation--of railways, tugboats and wagon roads--songs of the armed forces (mostly rude squibs about military conditions) and songs made by Wobblies (the BC name for the Industrial Workers of the World, a union/party made by and for those who did not fit the polite labour unionism of the time). The songs he collected are overwhelmingly male-made and -sung. If there was ever a body of material made by women of their equally hard but much more lonely work, Thomas never found it.

Prayer for Rain

05:48
On August 3rd, I was invited to play at the BC Day Celebrations in Victoria and I decided to do a group prayer (Om) asking for rain as the drought was getting pretty bad and worrisome. Now, one week later, I can give thanks for it is now raining. Note: On September 18 2010 I just discovered this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_f9XYWzY_Ns ("Păpăruda" performed by Surorile Osoianu. Romanian traditional rain invocation during severe drought, Moldova, Basarabia area version.) And it amazingly sounds good when played with this video at the same time. Wait till the OM starts on mine, then start the other one in another window and you will hear! From WIKI: A rain dance is a ceremonial dance that is performed in order to invoke rain and to ensure the protection of the harvest. Various interpretations of "rain dances" can be found in many cultures, from Ancient Egypt to certain Native American tribes. They could still be found in the 20th century Balkans, in a ritual known as Paparuda (Romanian) or Perperuna (Slavic). Julia M. Butree (a wife of Ernest Thompson Seton) in her book,[1] among other Native American dances, describes the "Rain Dance of Zuni"[2] The Cherokee tribe, an ethnic Native American tribe from the Southeastern United States, including Southern Appalachia, performed rain dances to both induce precipitation and to cleanse evil spirits from the earth [3][not in citation given]. The legend of the tribe holds that the rain summoned by the tribe contains the spirits of past tribal chiefs, who, when falling, battle evil spirits in the transitional plane between our reality and the spirit world.[4] It was also believed that particularly elaborate rain dances could inspire the participants, as well as audience, to take part in unusual and extreme acts of worship. A story from the indigenous peoples of the United States relates how the term "Rain Dance" came into being. The story holds that, during the days of the Native American relocation, certain religious ceremonies (amongst them the Rain Dance and Ghost Dance) were banned by the government. The tribes in suppressed areas were forbidden to perform the Sun Dance. The Windigokan, a nominally cannibalistic sect, nicknamed "the backward people," became famous for telling federal representatives that the dance being performed was not the Sun Dance, but the Rain Dance, thus preventing any prosecution or federal intervention. Christian Tatonetti was born in Montreal. http://itunes.apple.com/ca/album/the-art-flying-sitar-voice/id281416999 He lived for ten year son Salt Spring Island, and now resides in Victoria. This innovative musician plays sitar, piano and is currently studying classical singing at the Victoria Conservatory of Music with the illustrious soprano Nancy Argenta. He won first prize for best original song at "Le Gala Provincial de laChanson" in British-Columbia in 2002. He was awarded "Best Singer Interpreter" at the same Provincial competition in 2004. Christian also joined Théâtre Inconnu for their production of ''Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris'' in Victoria. Christian is currently a chorus member of Pacific Opera Victoria. Last spring, Christian sang in Mozart's ''Cosi FanTutte'' and will sing once again with the company in Puccini's "LaBohème" in February 2011. In addition, he hosts a morning show called ''Bon Matin'' at a local French radio station in Victoria. (107.9 FM CILS) Christian also performs at music festivals and at Victoria's waterfront playing his sitar. Other activities include photography, making music videos and teaching French.

Calving Season: Life and Death On a Montana Cattle Ranch | Op-Docs

16:39
“Calving Season” is Nathan Reich’s beautiful portrait of life on a family cattle ranch. It’s a quietly intimate story that rewards close attention — and the film unfolds with a patient focus that mimics that of its main character: a teenage girl tasked with helping calves into the world during a snowy Montana spring.
