I invented the Bow Blower, a combination of the bow drill and forge blower to make a device that can force air into a fire while being easy to construct from commonly occurring natural materials using only primitive technology. I began by fanning a fire with a piece of bark to increase its temperature. It is this basic principle I improved on throughout the project. Next, I made a rotary fan from two pieces of bark that slot together at right angles to each other to form a simple 4 bladed paddle wheel about 20 cm in diameter and 5 cm tall. The blades of the fan were not angled and were designed only to throw air outwards away from the axle when spun. The rotor of the fan was made by splitting a stick two ways so it formed 4 prongs. The fan was then inserted into the prongs and the end lashed to hold it in place. Spinning the fan rotor back and forth between the palms of the hands fanned the fire. But only some of the wind generated by the fan reached the fire. The rest of it was blowing in other directions, effectively being wasted. So I built a fan housing from unfired clay to direct the air flow into the fire. This was basically an upturned pot with a hole in the top, a spout coming out of the side. The housing was about 25 cm wide and 8 cm tall. The hole in the top and the spout were both about 6 cm in diameter so that the air coming in roughly equalled the air coming out. The base of the fan rotor sat in a wooden socket placed in the ground to make it spin easier and the top of the rotor protruded from the hole in the top of the housing. Now when the fan spun, air entered the hole in the top of the housing and exited the spout in the side. Importantly, it doesn’t matter which way the fan spins, air always goes into the inlet and out the spout. Air is thrown out towards the walls of the housing and can only leave through the spout while the vacuum in the centre sucks new air into the housing through the inlet. A separate clay pipe called a tuyere was made to fit over the spout to direct air into the coals. This was done because the pipe that touches the fire can melt away so it’s better to make this part replaceable. Instead of making a large wheel and belt assembly to step up the speed of rotation, I opted for a 75 cm long bow. I made a frame to hold the rotor in place consisting of two stakes hammered into the ground with a socketed cross bar lashed on to hold the top of the rotor. I made bark fibre cordage and tied the end to a stick. I then looped the cord around the rotor and held the other end in the same hand holding the stick. I then pushed and pulled the bow causing the rotor to spin rapidly, forcing air into the fire. I made a simple mud furnace for the blower. Then I collected orange iron bacteria from the creek (iron oxide), mixed it with charcoal powder (carbon to reduce oxide to metal) and wood ash (flux to lower the melting point) and formed it into a cylindrical brick. I filled the furnace with charcoal, put the ore brick in and commenced firing. The ore brick melted and produced slag with tiny, 1mm sized specs of iron through it. My intent was not so much to make iron but to show that the furnace can reach a fairly high temperature using this blower. A taller furnace called a bloomery was generally used in ancient times to produce usable quantities of iron and consumed more charcoal, ore and labour. This device produces a blast of air with each stroke of the bow regardless of whether it is pushed or pulled. The bow makes it possible to operate the blower without using a complicated belt and wheel assembly used in traditional forge blowers. There is a brief pause at the end of each stroke where the fan stops to rotate in the other direction, but this is effectively no different to the intermittent blast of a double acting bellows of Europe or box bellows of Asia. The materials used (wood, bark, bark fibre and clay) are readily available on most continents. No leather, valves or precisely fitted piston gaskets are required as with other types of bellows. The cords for this device wear out often so a number of back up cords should be kept handy for quick replacement. In summary, this is an easy to make device that solves the problem of supplying forced combustion air required for high temperature furnaces and forges. Losing Ground Against The Tides of Time. Blacksmithing is an endangered craft these days as blacksmith have to cope with numerous changes and challenges of modern life and industry. Mr Chin inherited his expertise as a blacksmith from his father, who was involved in the business at Jalan Tukang Besi almost 70years ago. He says running this type of traditional business is getting difficult these days because of competition from those using modern equipment. Furthermore, the rental for his business premises is too high. Although Mr. Chin is willing to take orders for tools and instruments according to the customer's wishes and requirements, Mr Chin's business as a blacksmith may end with him, as he has been unable to pass on his skills to his children since none of them want to follow in his footsteps. They feel there is no future in this type of business, fearing it will not yield good returns.

http://www.goldnscrap.com In this video tutorial i'm showing how to recover gold from electronic circuit board scrap. Specifically the gold plating that is found on the board connector edge - A.K.A the "fingers". This video is a complementary to the complete written tutorial on Gold-N-Scrap website (direct link below) The process applies to other kinds of gold plated itmes, given the substrate is unreactive (such as PCB, ceramic, glass etc'...). This process is less suitable for metallic items that are gold plated such as gold plated pins and gold filled items, though it will work with much effort and large consumption of acid. Post a comment and let us know how much gold do you think this recovery process yielded. Use a gas-powered cut-off saw or angle grinder to cut stone. 2. To hand-split a stone, begin by using an electric rotary hammer and masonry bit to drill holes spaced 4 inches apart across the stone face. 3. Insert a steel wedge and pair of steel feathers (shims) into each hole. 4. Use a hammer to alternately tap each wedge into the hole. 5. Continue to lightly tap each wedge until the stone cracks in two. 6. To split a stone with a hand tracer, set the tracer on top of the stone and tap it with the hammer. Move the tracer down an inch or so and strike it again. 7. Continue in this fashion until you’ve a cut line across the stone. 8. Move the hand tracer back to the beginning and repeat, tap it, move it, tap it, move it, until the stone splits in two. 9. To crack large stones, use a stonebuster tool. Set the buster on top of the stone, then strike it sharply with a hammer to cut a line across the stone. Repeat until the stone splits. 10. To trim the edge of a stone, use a carbide handset. Hold the handset at an angle to the stone, then strike the handset with a hammer to chip off small pieces of stone. 11. Use a carbide-tipped hand point to chip protrusions and high spots off of a stone face. 12. To smooth and even out the surface of a stone, lightly tap it with a bushing hammer. 13. Continue to tap the stone until achieving the desired level of smoothness. ►► http://www.goldextractionprocess.com Smelting of rare antique gold. The process of refining gold to remove any impurities that may be found intermixed with the noble metal is an ancient practice that has long been employed by diverse cultures. One of the earliest gold refining equipments employed by ancient metallurgists was the blast furnace – by then a rudimentary structure built with clay, stone, or roughly hewn rocks which were fed with wood or an assortment of biofuels derived from the dried fecal matter of animals. The blast furnace was used in tandem with the crucible, one of the oldest and perhaps still widely used metallurgical instruments to this day. With the methods of gold refining being perfected through the decades, even rustic objects such as clay pots and later on, cast iron equipment were employed in the quest for purer and finer examples of gold. You look for a crack on the bank, and follow it out until you meet the "gold line" and there you suck it out with your dredge. Gold will be on the outside edge of a river gravel bar, at the head of the bar (large gold but usually beneath big boulders), and at the tail end of a bar (vast concentrations due to river bars forming in the shape of an airfoil and sucking fine gold to the tail end) but be small to microscopic at the tail end. Gold will travel down a river or stream in a line, usually off center of the high pressure water. Gold will settle behind a boulder. A good place to fish, can also be an excellent place to find gold. "Black sand" is iron ore that can be readilly identified in gravel bars and is a ready indicator that gold is probably present. The most effective and economical way for the average person to find paying concentrations of gold in a river or stream is with a simple ($80) sluice that you shovel into and the riffles retain gold, platinum, gems and anything heavy for you. Gold can be found up high on the old river channels and recovered with metal detectors, a gold wheel, a highbanker, or simply by identifying the material, shoveling it in your truck and working it out later in a wheel, or your simple stream sluice. The states which have gold in vast quantities are: Maine, Vermont, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona, California, Idaho, Washington, Montana, and Oregon. Read the full article here: http://www.thedoityourselfworld.com/articles/article.php?id=11295 I bought a rusty old cast iron cooking pot from my landlady for only $3. It was in her dark, dirty, wet basement. It is very wet down there and had not been used in many years. So you can get the idea how rusty this old pot was. I want to clean it up to use it for soap making on my wood stove. I wanted a dedicated cast iron pot for this purpose. So I got a fire going outside in the woods and let it burn down some. To clean cast iron cookware you just toss it onto a bed of coals and let it burn out. When the flames were down some I put the pot on the fire along with a cast iron frying pan and my old Wok. The frying pan I had found about a year ago sitting outside and always wanted to clean it up and put it into daily service in my kitchen. The Wok had been violated by mice last winter when I left for Australia. The mice had dirtied up the Wok which was in my off grid RV kitchen. So this has been sitting outside for a year now as well. These three items were the perfect test for cleansing by fire. I used a metal garden rake to turn the cast iron cookware occasionally over the fire to make sure I burnt off both the inside and out. Once the fire was fully died down and there was only a bed of coals then the cleaning got serious. The hot bed of coals burns off all the rust, filth, oils and anything else. It turns it all do a light dusting of ash. When the coals had burnt down I removed my cast iron cookware and let it cool outside. This was winter so I had to be careful not to sit it down in the snow. The sudden cold would crack the cast iron instantly. I brought in the cast iron frying pan first because it looked like the easiest to finish. It had burnt off quite well. I used some paper towels and vegetable oil to wipe the ash out of the frying pan on both top and bottom. You could see that the fire had burnt off most of the rust. It was just a dusting all over the pan now which had to be removed with a towel. You could wash the pan with water and soap if you had access to running water. Then immediately put the pan in a hot oven or on the stove top to dry it off right away. But I am off the grid in the dead of winter and have no running water at this time. So I used the paper towels and oil. About 6 paper towels later and I had a pretty clean cast iron frying pan. I put one more generous coat of oil on the pan to prepare it for seasoning. Seasoning a cat iron frying pan is simply done by coating it with oil and then heating it at 300 degrees for a while. This causes the oil to seep into the pores of the pan and sort of bake in. This creates the best, original non stick frying pan. I put my frying pan on top of my wood stove to season it and left it overnight. In the morning I had the most awesome, clean looking frying pan. It looked like it had just been purchased from the store. It has the perfect black color of a properly seasoned cast iron pan. The next thing to do was to cook some eggs in my newly restored cast iron pan. Eggs stick badly to most surfaces and make a good test of any non stick coating. The cooking went well and the eggs did not stick to my frying pan. Success. And breakfast was good too. Later I will show you how to clean an maintain your cast iron cookware.

According to geologists, the slow process of personification dates back hundreds of millions of years. This has led several ufologists and ancient astronaut theorists to a quick deduction of the context of the incredible discovery leading them to assume not only that there was a human civilization before the historical process of personification in Texas, but that this ancient civilization already possessed the necessary technology for the fabrication of a hammer with modern features

This is the first of a new series I'm trying out. It'll get better, I'm sure. I started building another gate and matching planters for a customer. I decided to drift square holes through the upper and middle rails. I'm not sure why. I could have more easily drilled larger holes and just covered the gaps with weld metal. I think I just wanted an excuse to use the forge. We finished the week off with a bike ride on our local bike trail. So, I received a vintage gold scale in the mail. It's got some initials on the package, from Texas. Pretty nifty! Thanks! Though, I wish I could find more details about the scale itself. It's definitely a vintage piece. The writing on it is also quite unique. Couldn't get a great shot of that, and even the calibration pieces look like gold.

Ancient blacksmith tradition of Kazakhs! ___________________________________________ There is a whole host of Turkic words related to fire, heating, metal working, fire-worship and branding, specifically beginning with the roots tap-/tab-/tam-/tep-/tev-/tem-, forming words such as: tıbır ("hearth, fireplace"), temir ("iron"), taba ("frying pan"), tabak/tepir/tevsi/tepsi ("metal plate, dish"), tamĝa ("stamp, brand"), tab/tap ("scar, mark on the body"), tabın/tapın ("to worship"), tablaw ("forging; smithery"), tap- ("service"), tam ("home, hearth, fire"), tamū ("hell"), tav ("proper heat"), taŋ ("sky, sunrise, daylight"), kav ("tinder"). Montclair State University Professor H. Mark Hubey connects these words with the Scythian goddess of the hearth "Tabiti", with the Hurrian root »tab-/taw-« ("to cast metal"), Sumerian »tibira« ("iron") and Etruscan »tiber« ("iron mines on the river Tiber"). These words are commonly rooted in the proposed Proto-Altaic root words »*t`áp`à« ("to worship"), »*t`ébo« ("to help, assist, serve"), »*t`ep`V« ("warm, to burn"). Sources: • H. M.
