The World's Largest Electric Shovel (Big Brutus)

03:15
The Bucyrus Erie model 1850B while not the largest shovel ever produced is the largest remaining. It weighs 5500 tons or 11 million pounds and has a bucket capacity of 90 cubic yards or 150 tons. Big Brutus is 160 feet in height and took 52 men 11 months to assemble in 1962 after having been brought to Hallowell, Kansas in 52 railroad cars. Although Brutus was designed for a 25 year lifespan, only 10 years were achieved, not due to the reliability of the 1850B, but due to market forces, namely cheap low sulphur coal from Wyoming and Montana. Powering it's huge electric 15,000 hp motors was no joke. In the it's last month of operation in 1974 Big Brutus used $27,000 of electricity, $137,000 adjusted for inflation. It's been calculated that if Big Brutus had worked in a straight line it would have dug a pit that would have been 120 feet wide and 40 to 50 feet deep from Hallowell, Kansas, to Fort Worth, Texas, thats 368 miles!

OPEN PIT MINING OF COPPER IN THE AMERICAN SOUTHWEST 1960s MOVIE 57284

37:52
Produced by the Marion Power Shovel Company, this fascinating movie looks at copper and copper mining in the 1960s, when the American mines were at peak production and financial troubles loomed. The film looks at the future of mining, including the development of efficiencies to keep mines in business. Open pit mining techniques are shown, with a focus on the Southwest. At 2:00, Bingham Canyon and the Utah Mining Company pit (also known as the Kennecott Copper Mine) is seen. At 2:40, various open pit mines are seen which use either trucks or trains to remove ore. Although they are not named, it's likely that one of them is the Phelps-Dodge mine at Bisbee, Arizona. At 5:40, exploratory core drilling is shown. At 6:30, exploration programs are shown including at 6:43, an engineering team that maps mine development. Various drill systems are seen at 9:00, including the rotary drill. At 10:30, preparations are seen towards using explosives with the burying of dynamite and detonators for excavation. At 12:12, loading of explosives is seen with an emphasis on safe handling. At 14:51, a cage drill is shown in use allowing rocks to be drilled in the field (without being moved by shovels) for explosive removal. At 16:00, a small 4.5 yard bucket shovel is shown being used to move blast debris. At 16:00, a 6-yard loading shovel is seen. At 17:49, overburden waste from the pit is loaded on a train so that it can be moved and dumped at a remote area. At 18:50, a 13-yard shovel is seen in use with a large truck also in use. As the narrator explains, these large size equipment is needed to lower unit costs of copper, and are an economic necessity given the modern financial conditions. At 19:52, the motorized wheel principle of new types of mining trucks is seen, and the narrator comments that next generation trucks will carry over 100 tons of ore. At 22:55, a grader is seen working the mine roads, and the narrator comments about how tires wear out so quickly on the job that they account for up to 1% of mining costs. At 24:30, railroad trains are shown on the move at a mine, moving 60-125 ton per car loads. The narrator comments further on the use of railroads in pit mining. At 26:30, a large shovel is seen loading a train, sprinkling the loads with water to hold down dust. The large boulders in the loads make this type of work dangerous. At 27:16, ore loads are dumped into a crusher at a mill site. At 27:40, a rail waste dump into a slag pile is seen. At 28:00, a train-based grader is used to clear tracks of debris. The narrator notes that the mining railroads are some of the busiest in the USA and the world. At 28:44, new tracks are installed due to various demands, and mechanized railroad ballast systems are used for fast track installation. At 31:20, a skip hoist is seen being used to take ore from a deep, small pit to the surface. At 32:50, a series of leeching ponds is seen, with water percolated through the ponds to precipitate copper. At 34:00, a machine shop is seen at the mine, providing repair and maintenance services at the mine. At 35:40, a heavy repair part is unloaded at the mine using a power shovel. At 36:00, a research laboratory is seen at work, developing new uses of copper in the atomic and other industries. At 36:40, the IBM Ramac computer is seen. The IBM 305 RAMAC was the first commercial computer that used a moving-head hard disk drive (magnetic disk storage) for secondary storage. The film ends with a shot of a heap of pennies, with the narrator noting that the industry is working hard to expand production to fulfill future needs. The Bingham Canyon Mine, more commonly known as Kennecott Copper Mine, is extracting a large porphyry copper deposit southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah, in the Oquirrh Mountains. The mine is the largest man-made excavation in the world and produced more copper than any other mine in history – more than 19 million tons. The mine has been in production since 1906, and has resulted in the creation of a pit over 0.6 miles (970 m) deep, 2.5 miles (4 km) wide, and covering 1,900 acres (770 ha). Marion Power Shovel Company was an American firm that designed, manufactured and sold steam shovels, power shovels, blast hole drills, excavators, and dragline excavators. The company was a major supplier of shovels for the construction of the Panama Canal. Founded in Marion, Ohio in August, 1884 as the Marion Steam Shovel Company, the company grew through sales and acquisitions throughout the 20th century. The company changed its name to Marion Power Shovel Company in 1946 to reflect the industry's change from steam power to diesel power. Classic Machines: Clark-Michigan dozers

01:36
Clark-MIchigan dozers: a review by Richard Campbell Michigan wheel dozers were well accepted by the earthmoving industry and found use in all manner of operations. Michigan was not the first manufacturer to offer a wheel type bulldozer. That honour belongs to R G LeTourneau who pretty much came up with the concept in the first place. Initially based on the chassis of one of Michigan’s existing line of wheel loaders, the model 180 was nevertheless regarded as a success and development of other machines followed. It became apparent to Michigan, however, that some modifications were required to fully realise the potential of its wheel dozer, resulting in the development of a dedicated wheel dozer chassis, rather than adaptation of an existing loader chassis. This was very much a step in the right direction, and the models 180-II, 280 and 380 wheel dozers were introduced the following year. These machines were accepted well by the industry and found use in all manner of operations from earthmoving to industrial stockpiling and forestry. They were particularly well regarded in Europe where sales of the Michigan wheel dozers outstripped those of LeTourneau. The chief drawback of the design was the wide area needed to manoeuver around as the machines all had rear-wheel steering as did almost all of the wheel loaders and dozers of the time. LeTourneau’s machines were superior in this respect as their steering acted more like a skid-steer loader of today allowing them to execute a 180 degree turn in practically their own length. This though, while convenient, was quite hard on tyres. A solution was close at hand, however, with the development of articulated steering. First pioneered on Mixermobile’s ‘Scoopmobile’ wheel loaders, the concept soon caught on and by the mid 1960s, most major manufacturers, including Michigan, were offering articulated steer machines. Michigan applied this new technology to all its wheel dozers except the 180 which by then was up to its 180-III version. Michigan was also at the leading edge when it came to large wheel dozers. Its biggest machine, the 52-ton model 480, was introduced in 1958 and featured a 14-foot blade and 20 miles per hour top speed. An articulated version of this machine first appeared in 1965 and found immediate acceptance in surface mines where its speed, blade capacity and agility made it the ideal tool to clean up around face shovels in the pit. It remained in production until Clark-Michigan withdrew from the heavy equipment business. Michigan dozers were offered with a choice of powerplant; either Cummins or GM Detroit Diesel. The remainder of the powertrain – comprising the converter, transmission, drivelines, differentials and axles – was manufactured by Clark at its Benton Harbour, Michigan, factory. On rigid frame machines, the operator was well placed at the front of the machine in an elevated position where he had a good view of both corners of the blade. Steering was via the rear axle and power assisted by two hydraulic rams. Full instrumentation was provided on a panel on either side of the steering column, directly in front of the operator. Articulated versions placed the operator on the rear module but with a similar control tower view of the work area. They were also far more agile than their rigid-frame predecessors with a twin-ram steering system giving them a steering angle of almost 30 degrees. It is not known why an articulated version of the model 180 was never produced. Thanks for checking out NZ Contractor magazine's wheel dozers clip. Wide of rescue team winching vehicle out of snow 5. SOUNDBITE: (English) Suraya Dalil, Afghan Acting Health Minister: (++SOUNDBITE PARTLY OVERLAID OVER PREVIOUS SHOT++) "In our records are it is 166, in fact it is 167 with the recent death that was discovered. And the number of injured that was registered with Ministry of Health is 130 patients." Pul-e-Khumri, Baghlan province 5. Various of wounded in Pul-e-Khumri Hospital STORYLINE: Using bulldozers, shovels, and satellite images, rescue teams dug through mounds of snow on Thursday, searching for victims of an avalanche disaster in Afghanistan as the death toll rose to 171 and the hope of finding more survivors faded. Some 3,000 people have already been rescued from the snowbound, 12,700 foot (3,800-metre) high Salang Pass, which is the major route through the Hindu Kush mountains that connects the capital to the north. Public Works Minister Suhrab Ali Safari said five more bodies were discovered on Thursday on the pass, 70 miles (115 kilometres) north of the capital, bringing the total to 171. It was unclear how many more bodies may be buried in the snow. Speaking earlier Suraya Dalil, the acting Health Minister gave a lower figure of 167 deaths. Sniffer dogs, usually used in de-mining efforts, were brought in to help rescuers locate more victims as satellite imagery pinpointed eight more vehicles buried deep in the mountain gorge, he said. However, fresh snowfall and darkened skies brought a halt to efforts for the day, though the rescue operation is "not yet finished," he said. Defence Ministry official Ahmad Zia Aftali said the Afghan side plans to ask the international coalition for additional equipment, including metal detectors, to aid the search. He said they did not expect to find anyone still alive. Hundreds of soldiers and police ploughed through huge snowdrifts to clear the two miles (3.5 kilometres) of road that had been blocked off when a series of avalanches on Monday sent tons of snow and ice crashing down onto hundreds of vehicles along a treacherous stretch of highway. The avalanches had pushed vehicles hundreds of feet (metres) from the road and covered them so it was likely there were still many cars submerged in snow that they had not reached, Aftali said. Though the road has now been cleared, it remains closed to the public to allow for emergency efforts, Aftali said. The highway that winds through the mountainside remains littered with abandoned or snow-packed cars. Interior Ministry spokesman Zemari Bashary said late on Wednesday that the rescue operation was "95 percent over." He said some of the victims were found frozen to death inside their vehicles. Other bodies were strewn along the road. He said about 125 people were given medical treatment at provincial hospitals. The avalanches have closed off the 1.6 mile (2.6 kilometre)-long Salang Tunnel, a Soviet-built landmark dating from the 1960s, and the roads on both sides. The number of dead makes this perhaps the deadliest disaster to occur along the Salang Pass. Last year, avalanches claimed nearly a dozen lives. 20 tons of stone delivered by dump truck

00:41
Delivery of 20 tons of stone by NJ Sand and Gravel to our home in Ocean Beach 3 at the Jersey Shore. Weight is equivalent to 10 elephants! For reference, it was 3/8" white pebble; much easier on the feet than larger stones. It dries white, not yellow. The total area of the yard is about 2,400 square feet. We ended up having a little leftover, maybe a ton, which we're saving under our deck. It took two men and a wheelbarrow about 5 hours to spread all of it. Good luck!
