The Sprinkler Sprinkled (1895) - 1st Comedy Movie - LOUIS LUMIERE - L'Arroseur Arrose

01:13
The world's 1st comedy, The Sprinkler Sprinkled (also known as L'Arroseur Arrosé and The Waterer Watered) was shot in Lyon in the spring of 1895. The film portrays a simple practical joke in which a gardener is tormented by a boy who steps on the hose that the gardener is using to water his plants, cutting off the water flow. When the gardener tilts the nozzle up to inspect it, the boy releases the hose, causing the water to spray him. The gardener is stunned and his hat is knocked off, but he soon catches on. A chase ensues, both on and off-screen (the camera never moves from its original position) until the gardener catches the boy and administers a spanking. Louis Lumière used his own gardener, François Clerc, to portray the gardener. The first public screening of films at which admission was charged was held on December 28, 1895, at Salon Indien du Grand Café in Paris. This presentation by the Lumière brothers featured ten short movies, including L'arroseur arrosé, which played sixth. 35th Anniversary Retrospective // Nov. 10-13

01:57
produced by Corey Boling Ethnographic Cinema: 35 Years and Counting At its very first event, the Margaret Mead Film Festival showcased the work of Jean Rouch, a seminal figure in the history of visual anthropology and of cinema as an art form. Born in France in 1917, Rouch found his voice among the people of Nigeria, documenting their lives in respectful and innovative ways. The series on Rouch included his ten-year-old feature Jaguar, whose untethered camera brought the viewer into the action. With this film, he also transcended an apparent limitation—the unavailability of portable sync-sound equipment—to put the power of portrayal into hands of the subjects themselves, spurring a revolution in visual ethnography and the wider world of movies. Since that first festival in 1977, the Mead has striven to identify films made not only with the spirit of its namesake Margaret Mead, who broke ground incorporating moving images into the field of anthropology, but also of Jean Rouch and the heirs of his transformative methods. It is not surprising then to find classics of ethnographic filmmaking in the Mead archives. In addition to screening Rouch's Jaguar, this year's 35th Anniversary Retrospective Series presents a program of short films on trance rituals and several feature documentaries from the Festival's past: N!ai: The Story of a !Kung Woman by John Marshall, whose collection of films about the people of the Kalahari are part of UNESCO's Memory of the World Registry; A Wife among Wives from David and Judith MacDougall's Turkana Conversations Trilogy, a series of participatory films made among a nomadic tribe in Kenya; and Alanis Obomsawin's Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance, which took ethnography beyond participation into activism. As the Festival looks back, it also endeavors to look forward, seeking out thoughtful and daring works by the next set of nonfiction cinema pioneers. Join the Mead for these landmark works, as we celebrate the past 35 years, and counting.

Children in A Ngo village speak out their voices on disaster risk reduction

05:19
Participatory Video (PV) developed by ethnic minority children in Vietnam. In this video, they introduced their daily lives as well as presented their memory about the last disaster - typhoon #9 (Ketsana typhoon) affecting their communities and lives. The children came up with solutions for community awareness raising and advocacy messages. Conduct community screenings: Showed films within the community for discussion in 82 villages (5 events each) and 23 schools (10 events each) in Quang Tri. CECI also uses the PV for their awareness raising activities at school. The films were also shown at national and provincial workshops and events, such as the National Workshop on Climate Change Education, DRR week in Vietnam May 2011, and at various forums and working group meetings. A partner of Plan -- CARE in Vietnam -- is also broadcasting the videos on local television in Thanh Hoa province. The videos will be aired in Quang Tri province by Plan in Vietnam. Background Participatory video (PV) is an innovative methodology which amplifies the voices of traditionally excluded groups who are greatly affected by disasters. These marginalised groups are rarely included in decision making processes which determine policies and programmes that directly impact their lives. Participatory video is an innovative methodology in DRR because it not only gathers data for a broad understanding of grassroots' concerns and needs, but it also supports beneficiaries' own efforts to address their issues locally. The participatory approach allows the children to develop their own video while media experts provide initial training and on-going support as needed by the children. The PV process 1) Conduct pre-workshop training with 12 children 2) Require homework with elders 5) Conduct PV Workshop in large group - Focused on the children learning about using video to make a film about DRR/CC (discussed light, composition, sound and motion, and the basics of using the equipment). - Focused on working as a team, increasing interview videotaping skills (2 people on a camera/one person on a camera) and learning different crew roles. - Focused in the morning on technical filmmaking skills (interviewing, crew roles, etc) and watching the films for discussion and learning. 6) Script development and review by the children 7) Filming with the children 8) Finish editing and film delivery

Small Town Editor

20:17
in 1951 the U.S. State Department and U.S. Information Agency made the film, "Small Town Editor," for use in foreign countries to encourage a rural press to supplement the usually government-controlled news. This film, made in Littleton, featured Houstoun Waring (1901-1997), editor of the "Littleton Independent." Mr. Waring had achieved national recognition for his editorials on foreign affairs. W.B. "Curly" Annabel, editor of the "Bega District News" in New South Wales, Australia, saw the film and was struck by the similarity of Bega and Bega's newspaper, and Littleton and its newspaper. Mr. Annabel wrote to Mr. Waring in 1954, triggering a relationship between the two communities that has lasted and grown for more than 50 years. In the late 1950s, President Eisenhower announced his "people-to-people" program and encouraged establishment of sister cities. Both Mr. Waring and Mr. Annabel moved to implement the idea in their communities. Mr. Annabel invited Mr. Waring and his wife to Bega in February 1961. In August of that year, Mr. Annabel brought four Bega High School students to Littleton for "Bega Week." This celebration of the two communities, more than 8,000 miles apart, initiated the first Australian and U.S. Sister City relationship. The pattern was established for Littleton to send a delegation in years ending in one and six and Bega delegates visiting on years ending in three and eight. The opening screen in the film reads, "This film was presented to the Littleton Historical Museum in honor of Mr. Houstoun Waring, Editor Emeritus of the Littleton Independent by Martin Marietta Aerospace, Denver Division. 1978.
