What is the number "e" and where does it come from?

07:59
e (2.718281828...), also known as Euler's number, is a critically important number in mathematics. It forms the basis of the exponential function and the natural logarithm, and like π it crops up in innumerable places (even where you wouldn't expect it).

Someone asked me a question about Euler's Identity (e^iπ = --1)...

02:39
...and despite it being almost entirely irrelevant to the lesson at hand, I couldn't resist spending 3 minutes talking about it because it's undiluted mathematical awesome.

The sum of all counting numbers equals WHAT?

08:52
This is the second half of a lesson, watch the first half here: http://youtu.be/yudhkUUzAgY This is a well-known and hugely controversial result. The "proof" I've demonstrated is not the only way to show it - there are far more sophisticated and convincing ways to do it - but suffice to say that I went through it to raise questions and provoke thought rather than to make a statement about its validity or otherwise! Hope it makes you think.

"Practice makes perfect", and other lies we believe about learning

09:24
Trying to dispel some common misconceptions that students (and parents of students) often believe. It's amazing how widespread these beliefs are despite how wrong they are - so this is my effort to clear things up! Here are the 5 lies I talk about, in order: 1. Practice makes perfect 2. You should sleep less and work more 3. Give up sport to maximise study 4. Tutoring solves all problems 5. The best way to learn is to study

HSC Marks (1 of 3): Why are they adjusted?

05:50
The Board of Studies (BOS) and University Admissions Centre (UAC) have to do a lot of mathematical modification to your results before your school marks and final HSC exam can be turned into an ATAR. I try to give a brief overview of how they make their adjustments. Watch part 2 (about moderation): http://youtu.be/J-7qZ6iPZ10 Watch part 3 (about alignment and scaling): http://youtu.be/kZlaqG9t4Qo For more information, you should check out the BOS explanation of how results are determined: http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/hsc-results/determining-achievement.html You can also have a look at UAC's reports and scaling tables: http://www.uac.edu.au/undergraduate/atar/reports.shtml

Induction Inequality Proof Example 3: 5^n + 9 less than 6^n

10:42
Another viewer-submitted question. Inequality proofs seem particularly difficult when they involve powers of n, but they can be managed just like any other inequality given the right algebraic techniques! I had to stop and start this video a couple of times due to the cleaner walking into my staffroom while I was shooting. Hopefully it doesn't interrupt the flow of the explanation too much!
