SYSINTERNALS: Using WMI with BGINFO to display only active IP Address

03:31
More videos like this on http://www.theurbanpenguin.com : BGINFO from sysinternals, now owned by MS, is a great tool for displaying information on the users desktop such as their IP Address and host name. However if you have additional adaptors that do not have and IP Enabled then BGINFO will dispay the setting as "none". This is confusing for the end user and untidy. Using a WMI Query we can correct the issue and show the Address only where IP is enabled.

With this set the default profile is created from that of a local admin. The video shows all

LINUX: Installing Windows 7 with MDT and PXE Linux : No Active Directory required

03:16
More videos like this on http://www.theurbanpenguin.com : WDS may well be a free role with Server 2008 and R2; however it can only be used with Active Directory. Many companies will be installing into the Ad but also many consultants will have their own MDT solutions and not have an Ad with them for WDS and PXE boot. With Linux, true heterogenous computing, this does not matter; I can load mu MDT or winPE iso files easily with Linux and PXELinux

LINUX: The Puppet Client and a basic site.pp

14:05
More videos like this on http://www.theurbanpenguin.com : In the previous video we setup a basic Puppet Server on openSUSE 11.4. Now we will setup the client on openSUSE and configure the basic puppet manifest, site.pp. The site puppet policy must exist in the servers manifest directory for the clients to know what to do. each time this file or other files are edited to do with the Puppet Server it must be restarted. Installing the agent on openSUSE is easy, zypper in puppet. With it intsalled we need to check that we can access the server, usually we wil create and alias in DNS called "puppet" to point to our server. We should always check the ownship of /var/lib/puppet, I like the ownership to be puppet.puppet. The connect to the server we need to have our client SSL certificates signed, puppetd --test from the client will send the request. On the server, puppetca --sign "client.example.com" will sign the request. The view requests that are waiting to be signed, puppetca --list. Now we are ready to create the site.pp. In this video it will be basic but it will demonstrate how we can centralize server management by ensure ssh is running, root log in is denied and that changes to the ssh configuration will result in a restart of ssh. Powerful stuff from the people at Puppet labs.

More videos like this on http://www.theurbanpenguin.com : In this tutorial we are going to take a look at the $OEM$ folder in our Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) share. As a simple example we will copy the corporate wallpaper to machines during the installation. Sure, I could build the wallpaper into the image; however that would require adding it to all images and, when the wallpaper becomes out-dated I would have to corresponding update all installation images. Using the folder I simply need to add the updated wallpaper to the folder.

I would be cautious of the Ubuntu documentation as it seems a little old for what actually is needed in 11.04. Essentially when you install the ldap server the database will be configured and your admin user. You only have to add you OUs and users.

UBUNTU: Upstart Service Control

09:42
More videos like this on http://www.theurbanpenguin.com : I have been using Linux now for more years than I can remeber and I have been used for many of those years to the System V init daemon and scripts. For the last couple of years Ubuntu have been converting their services to use Upstart. With this process configuartion files are created in the /etc/init directory and these file maintain if you like, the configuation of the service start up through "start on" and "stop on" stanzas. We no longer require the sym-links in the rc directories to control auto start of a service. We also can leave chkconfig, insserv and service behind and in this video we will show you how it all come together.

LINUX: Installing the Puppet Master on openSUSE

20:29
More videos like this on http://www.theurbanpenguin.com : The open source Puppet Server allows for centralized configuration of your Linux servers and desktops though "Puppet Policies" or "manifests". These manifests, desgnated with the .pp suffix to their filename can send out standard configuration files, start services and install software. This becomes your central management console for your server management. Of course Puppet is free and open source unlike many other management suites. In this first video we will look at installing the puppet-server on openSUSE 11.4. We need to then set up the correct ownership of the puppet files and create the puppet fileserver configuration if we would like to allow central management of configuration files through puppet. With that in place we use the local puppet client on the server to apply test polices for files, services and install packages like nmap.

More videos like this on http://www.theurbanpenguin.com : One thing you may want to automate from your scripts or command line is to delete lines from files. We looked in an earlier video at using echo to append a line to a file to disable an upstart service; but if you want to enable the service you would need to delete the line. sed -i /^manual/d filename will work a treat for us in this case, lets to a quick look, just 2 minutes this video.
